News: Lieber Signs with Cubs
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 16, 2008 12:35 pm

The Cubs have signed free-agent RHP Jon Leiber to a one-year contract, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

In a recent report for the Rocky Mountain News, Lieber expressed interest in pitching for the Mets, among other teams.

According to Rosenthal, “The signing of Lieber could signal a trade of right-hander Jason Marquis or the return of righty Ryan Dempster to the bullpen.”

In mid-December, the Daily News wrote that the Cubs had been shopping Marquis, ‘and apparently like Endy Chavez.’

well, they can like him, but they’re not getting him

Marquis won at least 12 games in each of the last four seasons, while compiling a 4.54 ERA and averaging 33 starts per year.

I can hear it already… Omar is sleeping again… Why didn’t we sign this guy.. Omar sucks..blah blah blah… At 1 year it wouldn’t have been a bad deal to sign him.. Not a big loss.

Endy is too much for Marquis, maybe Gotay and a couple of low,low level guys?? I wouldnt mind Marquis as a 5th option…would give us more leverage on the Johan front since we wouldnt seem as desperate as we are?

Is anyone going to step up and advocate for the acquisition of Jason Marquis? It oughta be a pretty straight salary dump.

I don’t know if there’s a case to be made. I’m curious if someone else thinks there is.

I actually think Show will have a good year for us. He showed signs last year near the end, actually he was the only solid bullpen guy we had down the stretch.

my god, jason marquis? are pelfrey and humber that bad?

    • wnymetsfan says:

I do not think Humber and Pelfrey are that bad but they are really an unknown. You really have no idea what you will get and you do not know truly if another year of development is needed. That being said Marquis while not Santana or a front end guy is someone who takes the ball every 5th day and has a 4.54 ERA which coming from the 5th spot in the rotation would average to above average. Put him in a pitchers park and you may get a slight drop in that as well. You look at his stats and he had 32 starts in 04 and 05 and 33 in each of the past 2. He also had ERA of 3.71 in 04, 4.13 in 05, 6.02 in 96 and bounced back to 4.60 in 07. He also pitched 201.1, 207, 194.1 and 191.2 innings from 04 to 07 respectively which would replace Glavines innings while pitching at about the same level. I wouldn’t give them a bunch since they are trying to dump salary but it could be a low risk chance.

  5. Haha, funny to hear about Lieber back with the Cubs. At least we didn’t sign him, we can do better..

I wouldn’t mind adding Marquis, but I don’t want to give up Endy for him. Like someone said, Gotay & some class A guys, maybe.

Question is does Endy really have a spot anyway. I understand that his catch was great and he is a good fielder, however with Anderson, Easley, Castro all locks I would look for that RH OF/1B like Mench and keep Gotay on the bench. Then trade Endy for Marquis.
Marquis as a lock in the #5 spot would not hurt our chances for Santana at all.
If they can not get Santana at that point why not even consider bringing in Morris too. He again is league average and an innings eater that would cost us near nothing to get.
Pedro, Maine, Perez, Morris, Marquis and still having all our prospects and cash for later is not the worst thing that could happen. Maybe you even up the trade to bring back Nady and you solve all kinds of current issues.
Imagine if you could net Nady, Morris, and Marte for something like Mulvey, Gotay and a lower prospect?
