News: Dotel May Have Deal with White Sox
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 18, 2008 7:30 am

According to Impacto Deportivo, citing ‘a relative of the player,’ the White Sox and free-agent RHP Octavio Dotel have reached agreement on a two-year, $11 million deal.

…thanks to Steve P for the link

The White Sox will be Dotel’s fifth team in five years, and the seventh team he has played with during his nine-year career.

…if true, it suggests to me that Aaron Heilman will be on the Mets come opening day…because, the way i understood it, dotel was viewed by the Mets as a potential replacement for a guy like heilman, who could have been traded in a deal for a starting pitcher…that said, $5.5 million per year for two years is a lot of money for dotel…and, again, i just don’t sense that Omar Minaya and Company have any interest in signing a relief pitcher to a multi-year deal right now…which is wise…had heilman been dealt, dotel would have been my first choice, though…no doubtbut not for two years

Since 2002, pitching exclusively from the bullpen, against roughly 1,400 batters, opponents are batting .200 against Dotel, who has struck out roughly 30 percent of the hitters he has faced.

…by the way, i just don’t know what to make of these sort of reports…note that the source of this information is one of dotel’s relatives…this is not to say it is incorrect, but i will not consider him off the market until i see this reported by a second outlet

For instance, last week Impacto Deportivo reported that the Royals had reached agreement with RHP Bartolo Colon.

…and, as far as i can tell, colon is still very much a free agent

Considering his recent injury history….i think it is amazing that he got 2 years at all let alone 2 yrs at $5.5M per. Good for him. But I want no part of that deal. Its worse than Motas. At least Mota was not injured and 40% of the time pitched well. DOtel could miss 40% of his contract time leaving the team short. No thanks.

Plus we have enough in the pen and our top picks in recent years have been college closers who should help quickly. Guys like Kunz and Rustich and Joe Smith can all help out and they have options to go up and down multiple times per year since they are so young in their careers. If one is hot..keep em. When he cools off…send him down and try to catch lightning in a bottle with another guy.

Worse that Mota? At least Dotel is not a known steroid user. Mota was an ATROCIOUS signing. And Minaya acknowledged that by essentially trading him for nothing!

Omars best trade of the offseason by my judgement. Actually got someone to take his full salary off our hands

And oddly, Johnny Estrada still has not signed with anybody. There must be something up with that guy.

        • gowrightgo says:

That is odd. I guess all the ML starter jobs are now taken and he is trying to get a ML starters job. WHo knows. Maybe he can’t lift his arm above his head anymore. Sorry for the atttempt at humor Cerrone. I know its frowned upon here now

Maybe he’s asking for too much money or something. But I always thought it strange that the Mets never really considered him an option for catcher as Omar traded for Schneider (and Church) shortly after the trade for Estrada was made.

Once the Torrealba deal fell through, I thought it was good that Omar traded Mota for Estrada so quickly. But they never introduced him or made a big deal of it and then a couple of weeks later they made that trade with the Nats (and they were even willing to throw in Estrada as well, to which the Nats said ‘no thanks’). The Mets – and the other teams apparently – must have known something Estrada that we don’t.

Omar dropped the ball on this one. Signing Dotel would have made it much easier to deal Heilman.

Assuming some other team was anxious to trade for him?

I still say though it would have made it easier to move him back into the rotation.

Hey, if Sanchez comes back healthy and Wise pitches well, Heilman still could hit that 5 hole!

the mets stubborness in not even considering heilman for a starting job is an enigma to me….what the hell its worth a try at least….i really dont like him and cant even imagine forgiving him for that one pitch to yadayada but i do think starting him is worh a try…his stats come out good as a reliever but i dont trust him…

  3. BatteriesForRocker says:

I think that taking a chance on Dotel would have been worth it. He obviously didn’t turn out how the Mets originally envisioned him, but he’s got some decent stuff. It at least would have added some much-needed depth.

So you think Octavio Dotel is worth 5.5 a year?
