Teixeira Signs One-Year Deal
By Brandon Eddy - Jan 18, 2008 9:11 am

According to the Associated Press, 1B Mark Teixeira signed a one-year, 12.5 million deal with the Braves.

In 54 games with Atlanta last season, he batted .317 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs.

…following the 2008 season, i assume Atlanta will do whatever it takes to sign teixeira long-term, however he will more than likely explore his options as a free-agent…hopefully he finds his way to Queens…

Scott Boras is his agent….. you can bet he will test the free agent waters.

  2. the_other_matt says:

Can’t we finish speculating on the 2008 season before we start with 2009?

  3. pezao says:

It would be a nice coup to sign him away from the Braves. Johan and Tex opening CitiField with Beltran, Reyes, and Wright? Just thinking about that makes my weekend really good already!

    • Xavier22 says:

Wait, the Mets got Johan? Huh. I’m surprised Matt hasn’t reported it. He’s usually on top of those things.

  4. stickguy says:

But, will any of th eposters that scream for the Mets to give Johan 25mill/yr., complain when they don’t have budget room to re-up Perez and pedro, and also give Teix a huge deal?

    • boozermetsfan says:

yeah cause they do have “budget room” ridiculous notion. if they want to they have the money to spend. that should not preclude ownership from paying talent to get to a WS

    • Maine Man says:

Tex will make just as much as Delgado, so i feel, there will be plenty of money for him not to mention el duque’s contract and pedro’s time as a met is also likely over. thus, we have plenty of money to sign tex and perez to their deals.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

excellent point i dont think alot of people realize just how much money delgado actually makes i believe its about 17 million. so if el duque is gone those two salaries could afford to pay tex 20 mill a season no problem.

  5. MacD81 says:

Won’t a certain other NY team be looking for a new 1B? Should he have a solid year, Tex is going to make some serious cash next winter wherever he signs. I can see the bidding being fierce for this guy.

    • stickguy says:

      just remember, unlimited revenue streams!

This does go to show how important it is to draft well, and hang onto the right guys. The difference between being able to call up a minor league guy to share time at the beginning, then take over vs. having to chase after huge $ FAs is enormous.

    • ravi3 says:

oh yea…Lets just say that after the 2008-9 off-season, Tex wont have to worry about his kids, his kids kids, his kids kids kids, etc.

    • napes22 says:

Maybe Carp will be SOO impressive in 2008 that he’ll get a major league callup for 2009. Problem solved….just maybe…sigh

    • Coolpapabell says:

Tex has Yankees written all over him. They would have shed teh Giambino’s contract so, yes, he will be a Yankee.

  6. napes22 says:

Jason Kubel, Brad Lidge, Joe Crede, Juan Rivera, and Huston Street also signed 1 year deals.

The Angles need to trade Juan Rivera – they have too many outfielders.

  7. mr.gee21 says:

I heard that Tex wanted to play for the Mets, and that the Yanks just want to make sure that he doesn’t play for the Sox and otherwise don’t care….

    Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

  8. tfc3rid says:

Tex is from Maryland and I believe in the past he would have liked the thought of playing in Baltimore…

I think that Young Hankenstein will covet him… Plus, why wouldn’t Scott Boras wasnt to deal with the Yanks… They backed up the dump truck for A-Fraud.

  9. gbaked says:

wasnt he already signed for this year?

    im confused

    • Lightweis says:

      He was arbitration eligible.

Tex also went to Georgia Tech, and is married to a girl from Atlanta. I know in the end that the almighty dollar will probably talk, but he does like it down south.

    • AzMetsFan says:

I as well. I thought he was signed through the 2008 season?

  10. BlueTrane says:

I dont like the cut of his jib….

  11. sase says:

don’t worry if he hits the free agent market he will be a Yankee… no doubt abot it.. 5 years 18-20 mil per

  12. throatneedle says:

Texiera is great and all but i’d be surprised if he signs with the Mets. I’m thinking the Yankees, Orioles, and Braves have the inside track with the Orioles being the most likely destination. Peter Angelos will open up the purse strings and give him anything he wants since he’s a Maryland boy

  13. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

it aint happening. its not that its not financially possibly, its just not happening. the yankees need him more than we do. I think we should focus on dunn he wont require as much money or years as tex and can bat 5th, can provide power, and can hit it out of anywhere, so doubtful his HR totals would chance much.

  14. KnowItAll says:

““(Martinez’s) offensive potential is significant. (He’s) a special offensive player…he can do anything he wants offensively.””

didnt they say that about alex escobar and lastings milledge too?

  15. So true. I could see the Yankees just throwing everything & anything to get Tex.

I would love if he signed with us though – would be the perfect fit to replace Delgado in the coming years.
