Buzz: Colon’s Options Running for Hills
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 21, 2008 9:26 am

According to ESPN.com’s Rumor Central, the Royals, White Sox and Mets had all been scouting free-agent Bartolo Colon.

However, in a report for ESPN.com last week, Buster Olney wrote that Colon was ‘on the verge’ of signing with the Mets last week, ‘but the Mets backed off after taking a closer look at the condition of his right arm.’

Today, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians have lost interest in Colon as well, after watching him throw 87-89 mph in a Dominican Winter League game.

Similarly, the White Sox have  backed off of Colon because of his desire for a mulityear deal, reports the Chicago Sun-Times, who lists the Royals as the favorites to sign Colon.

I wouldn’t mind taking another look at Bedard and seeing if something can get done, but yeah.

Please, for the love of god avoid the Colon’s, Lohse’s, Livan’s of the world. We have the kids who if you let them compete for the job the winner would odds are do the same thing, but for signifcantly less money, and more importantly the kids have the upside to get better. These clowns don’t.

I agree. I don’t think there is enough attention being paid to Bedard. I would offer the same 4 player package we currently have on the table for Santana. Gotay might interest them too with Tejada gone. At least we would get 2 years out of Bedard before we would need to resign him. They are the same age and I do not think Bedard has as much wear and tear on his arm as Sanatana does. Don’t get me wrong, Santana is probably the best in baseball but I do not think Bedard is too much of a drop-off and could be resigned for less and at a later date.

Offer the O’s Gomez-Guerra-Mulvey-Heilman for Bedard, and sign Livan as a fifth starter. That way you can use Duque in the pen and let Pelfrey start the year in AAA.

At this point, Colon is a ST invitee/minor league deal type. Who cares if he wants a big money multi year deal. I want a lot of things I won’t get too!

  4. I’d maybe sign him to a 1-year minor league contract…
