News: Dotel Signs with White Sox, Again
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 21, 2008 3:28 pm

The White Sox have signed RHP Octavio Dotel to a two-year, $11 million contract, according to a major-league source, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

…i still don’t know how to feel about this…i’ll admit, i liked the idea of dotel potentially pitching for the Mets again, even if it was on a two-year deal…that said, it all depends on how the overall off-season plays out…i mean, no matter how i slice it up in my mind, dotel is far from a guarantee, and i can understand why he may not be worth gambling on for two full seasons…what’s more, i am always concerned about guys who have bounced from team to team, as he as…my hunch is that, avoiding him on that deal, is probably the wise move…but, time will tell…

The White Sox will be Dotel’s fifth team in five years, and the seventh team he has played with during his nine-year career.

Since 2002, pitching exclusively from the bullpen, against roughly 1,400 batters, opponents are batting .200 against Dotel, who has struck out roughly 30 percent of the hitters he has faced.

Last week, citing ‘a relative of the player,’ Impacto Deportivo reported that Dotel had reached agreement the same contract, but the report was immediately refuted by his agent.

Incredible. This bum, who cannot stay on a mound for 2 weeks astraight, gets 11 mil, and Heilman arbitrates 1 mil. Who in their right mind would think this basket case is worth 11 mil?

I think that the ‘reputation’ Wilpon has is grossly exacggerated. Sure he doesn’t spend money with the panache of a Steinbrenner (plus, what have the Yankees done since their payroll skyrocketed?).

To call him Coupons, when he is constanly among the top 3-4 teams in the majors (and tops in the NL) in payroll, while maintaining a beautiful, state of the art complex in Brooklyn, Port St. Lucie, and the Dominican, while building a new stadium primarily from his own funds is wrong. You can fairly criticize him for interfering in the baseball operations, concerned more about PR, and branding of the team, but even then, money is spent, albeit in the wrong places- Vaughn/Appier. He also dished out about $170 million on just two players in ‘05, and gave Piazza the richest contract in baseball (at the time). Spending $250+ million on one player, regardless of how good he is, is simply irresponsible.

I mean if you want to find someone deserving of the “Coupons” moniker, look no further than Carl Pohlad in Minnesota. Despite being among the wealthiest owners in baseball, the guy refuses to spend enough money to keep his team intact, freeing players like Santana and Hunter, while making the city pay for a new stadium. Jeff Loria is another person deserving of that name. Sure he may have an unnatural affection of the Brooklyn Dodgers, but there aren’t too many owners I’d rather have…Maybe just Boston’s ownership group, and Artie Moreno. Seriously, look at some of the other guys, and count your blessings.

ravi i didnt call fred “coupons” i agree he has spent money in the past albeit a bit unwisely -bonilla vaughn colemane (vince not ed) but remember when we were going after vlad and he was talking about their “revunue streams ” not being like that of the yankmees? now we have plenty of streams (and a few lakes too) reports say fred will dole out money for johan but if he doesnt a lot of us mets fans that paid the 20% increase on our full and partial ticket plans and also the individual game ticket holder will be pissed

i mean the 20% increase sucks, but its in place to help finance the cost of Citifield, as well as to mitigate the rising salaries of players already on the team. At the end of the day, going to a Mets game is still cheaper than going to a Yankee or Red Sox game.

ravi what about all the merchandizing, naming rights the cable channel etc the mets didn’t have to raise the yix that much this year and us partial plan holders might be screwed out of our tix next year so yeah im a bit perturbed &pissed at the situation

trust me, I hear you. But the naming rights don’t really kick in until next year, and they only account for about half the cost of the stadium. I think another reason for the increase is to avoid the sticker shock that will be associated with having a huge jump in prices for Citifield (there will be a bump without a doubt)

But at the same time, have you seen a breakdown of exactly how the hike is going to take place? Its not exactly a straight 20% increase on each seat..that rate is just an average. Some of the better seats -i.e. field box- will see a bigger rate hike while the average seats will see a smaller to no increase. I would post a link to that info, but I can’t recall where I had read it. I think in the Times somewhere.

Very True.. I believe Citi Group is also laying off 20,000 people. I would be pissed if I got laid off by citi group and they are spending 20 million a year to name a baseball stadium.

Whenever I think about stadium naming right, I think about baseketball… Tampax Stadium

5.5 mil per year for an oft-injured bullpen guy makes no sense at all. It’s a riddiculous signing by the White Sox and I’m glad the Mets didn’t try to do it.

I agree. If people are complaining about 3 year/$10M for Schoenwise, how can people think that we should have spent 2 year/$11M for Dotel, who can’t even stay on the mound?

It would have been nice to have him, but it’s probably better that we passed on him.

After watching Mets hot stove once again I have to hear that they expect a lot from Orlando Hernandez. Listen, when hes on the mound hes as good as the next guy…no doubt, But you can not trust his health. He’s like a pitching Moises Alou. Gotta get somebody to make up the innings that we lost when Glavine left and then some considering Orlando hernandez looks to be in the rotation next year. All i’m sayin is that we should not expect #57 to walk in the door and take care of the holes we have to face by getting somebody to eat up innings. And that was not a plea for Steve Trachsel
