Note: Duaner Doing Well in PSL
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 21, 2008 2:51 pm

According to two eyewitnesses, who had recently been in St. Lucie for Mets Fantasy Camp, Mets RHP Duaner Sanchez appears to be in very good shape and he is throwing quite well.

…i keep getting questions about sanchez’s weight, because of some misleading photograph that appeared with a newspaper article…i guess the photo made him look fat, which he is not

For recent photos of Sanchez, click here, here and here.

…thanks to Scott from Live Auctioneers for the photos

The Mets have re-signed RHP Duaner Sanchez to a one-year, major-league contract.

well thats the best news ive heard all week regarding the mets
just hope we put a curfew on him when he’s in fl looking for dominican food

  2. Stem Ad says:

This is the exact news I wanted to hear!!! I am super excited about the Pen this coming year with Sanchez in there. Huge upgrade from Mota, and hopefully Willie learned to use Schoenwise correctly (Lefties only!).

Not to mention, a welcome break from the Santana ordeal.

    • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

i agree stem especially abot scho

      • FBones24 says:

I think Scho will have a bounce back year. He was better in the second half and relievers are always on and off, minus a select few. I think that’s why we as Met’s fans don’t appreciate Heilman. He is pretty consistent for a reliever.

    • metzor says:

Agreed totally. There was so much talk of rebuilding the pen after 07, but I think getting rid of Mota and getting Sanchez back alleviates a lot of that. There may still be room for improvement but I’m much more satisfied at this point with a healthy Duaner.

  3. Maine Man says:

now only if we could dump schoe and one of the other kids could set up then we will have the best bullpen

    • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

i agree bonez i just wonder why omar didn’t acknowledge scho’s achilles prob the last time he was on the hot stove report

  4. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

There’s a lot of angst with Heilman about the gopher ball, but overall he chews up 80+ innings from the pen with a 3 era. That is a very valuable thing to have.

And when he’s on and his changeup is working, he looks unhittable.

  5. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

just beware of the longball with him – kinda like with telgheder

  6. metsrbest says:

Duaner is almost as important to this team than if we trade for Santana. Just another solid counted upon arm in the pen would do wonders not only for the starters, but for the rest of the bullpen! Heilman/Sanchez/Wagner for 7, 8, and 9 is a much better alternative than Crap from which to choose from/Heilman/Wagner for the last 3 innings.

Hey guys with not a lot of news going around latley I thought i would give you a little extra to read.. (not trying to spam)

I recently did a prospect retro on Aaron Heilman at my blog, and at the end it asks if you had the chance would you draft Heilman again?

Anyways here is the link: metsprospectus.blogspot.com/2008/01/aaron-heilman-would-you-do-it-again.html

So just give it a look and answer the poll at the bottom of the article!!

PS: CERRONE LET ME GET ON YOUR LINKS LIST!! PLEASE!

dont forget that heilman picked up the slack for the team when sanchez went down should he had been the main 8th inn setup guy last year? no! but there werent ne better alternatives

    • metsrbest says:

I think that’s kinda my point. Just having another go to guy like Duaner in there for the later innings will make everyone better in the pen.

  8. MealTicket says:

My only concern with Duaner is that coming back from such a traumatic injury, he might not be up to the rigors of being the seventh-inning guy for whole season. He might be better off starting the year on a limited schedule in AAA and working his way back onto the Major League club gradually.

    • jamie says:

while I’m no doctor, I don’t think 60-70-or-so innings is too rigorous. it’s not the same as working a SP back. If in ST he looks a little slow, don’t pitch him every game by all means, but I don’t think that warrants starting him off in the minors.

  9. These recent photos are more misleading than the previous ones from the newspaper article.

And are we to put more faith in Flickr photos or those published by the New York Times?

In any case Duaner has at least a month to get his butt in shape. Hopefully he’ll be a bit more motivated than last year and get back to being the superman he was in ‘06.

  10. Zoe says:

Thanks for the update! Let’s hope the news stays good; fingers xed.

  11. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I’d use Heilman to get Santana and sign Otsuka. Not as a replacement for Heilman, but really just to have another reliever. And Otsuka’s damn good when he’s actually playing.

By the way, there is a rumor going around by spoken word that toy sports goggles will be sold at CitiField if Sanchez is still a New York Met!

  12. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Speaking of Otsuka… why the non-tender from Texas? If memory serves, his sore elbow showed no structural damage through year’s end (had him in a fantasy league last year, so I paid some attention). He’s been startingly effective in both pitcher-friendly and non-pitcher-friendly environs, has some part-time closer experience (in case of Wags problems) and has an above-average GB/FB ratio…

Unless there’s something that isn’t in the papers, why not take a chance? I mean, at worst, he represents eaten minor-league contract money; at best, he’s like Heilman without the gopher problem.

  13. Nutz15 says:

Why there’s no love for Heilman — I have no idea?

The sooner Met fans come to the realization that he’s the key to this bullpen, the better.

Trade him — then sign Otsuka?

    C’mon fellas:

Free agent Akinori Otsuka will undergo elbow surgery Wednesday, he reported on his blog.

Otsuka didn’t say whether it’d be Tommy John surgery or something less severe. We’re guessing he’ll need to have the ligament replaced. If it was a lesser problem, he should have had it taken care of months ago.
