Why there's no love for Heilman -- I have no idea?

The sooner Met fans come to the realization that he's the key to this bullpen, the better.

Trade him -- then sign Otsuka?

C'mon fellas:

Free agent Akinori Otsuka will undergo elbow surgery Wednesday, he reported on his blog.

Otsuka didn't say whether it'd be Tommy John surgery or something less severe. We're guessing he'll need to have the ligament replaced. If it was a lesser problem, he should have had it taken care of months ago.

Speaking of Otsuka... why the non-tender from Texas? If memory serves, his sore elbow showed no structural damage through year's end (had him in a fantasy league last year, so I paid some attention). He's been startingly effective in both pitcher-friendly and non-pitcher-friendly environs, has some part-time closer experience (in case of Wags problems) and has an above-average GB/FB ratio...

Unless there's something that isn't in the papers, why not take a chance? I mean, at worst, he represents eaten minor-league contract money; at best, he's like Heilman without the gopher problem.

I'd use Heilman to get Santana and sign Otsuka. Not as a replacement for Heilman, but really just to have another reliever. And Otsuka's damn good when he's actually playing.

By the way, there is a rumor going around by spoken word that toy sports goggles will be sold at CitiField if Sanchez is still a New York Met!

while I'm no doctor, I don't think 60-70-or-so innings is too rigorous. it's not the same as working a SP back. If in ST he looks a little slow, don't pitch him every game by all means, but I don't think that warrants starting him off in the minors.

These recent photos are more misleading than the previous ones from the newspaper article.

And are we to put more faith in Flickr photos or those published by the New York Times?

In any case Duaner has at least a month to get his butt in shape. Hopefully he'll be a bit more motivated than last year and get back to being the superman he was in '06.

I think that's kinda my point. Just having another go to guy like Duaner in there for the later innings will make everyone better in the pen.

My only concern with Duaner is that coming back from such a traumatic injury, he might not be up to the rigors of being the seventh-inning guy for whole season. He might be better off starting the year on a limited schedule in AAA and working his way back onto the Major League club gradually.
