Watch: Rick Peterson talk Pitching
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 22, 2008 12:51 pm

Last on SNY’s Mets Stove Report, Rick Peterson talked about the way pitchers prepare in the off-season for spring straining, which you can watch by clicking the play button below…

…i’d love to say i learn about pitching when rick speaks, but i don’t for two reasons: 1) he uses so many stats and metaphors, i struggle to keep up, and 2) i’m completely distracted by his hair…seriously, what is going on there…

…it doesn’t matter if i get distracted, though, as long as he keeps communicating with his pitchers, that’s all that matters…

Also on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, Newsday’s Ken Davidoff and FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal talked about five concerns that face the Mets as they head to Spring Training, which you can watch by clicking .

Is he looking to shape that into a mullet?

  2. mikey_FF says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is bothered by his hair!

  3. murpheeee says:

funky hair or not, the guy talks sense – pound the line fellas, especially you Pelfrey!

  4. Gaspar says:

Peterson is a great interview. Yeah he’s a big stats guy, but he knows what’s going on for his pitcher at every point in the pitch count. The hair is amazing. And it’s bizarre to see him not in a Mets jacket.

    • dego says:

I did not even think about the jacket when i watched that.. that might be the first time I’ve seen him out of the Jacket.. good catch

  5. fsa3 says:

The hair is absolutely mesmorizing. That mullet is party in the front and back!

  6. darkstar73 says:

I’m not sure how you couldn’t learn anything from him, the guy is a wealth of pitching knowledge and everything he just said makes so much sense. Lots of stats sure, but that’s how you find what’s successful, this guy knows what he’s talking about. Always love hearing him talk about pitching.

  7. gbaked says:

One of the biggest changes to the mets organization I have noticed the past couple of years has been bringing in great coaches and keeping them here.

Peterson is the best pitching coach i have ever heard speak. Having smart guys that can really build a foundation is huge. Which is why I am very happy that there wasnt a firing squad lined up at our team after last season.

alot of good comes out of consistency. I have heard Rick talk about that 220 line a few times now. Maybe it will sink into Pelfs head this year.

    • gipper913 says:

Good coaches? Perhaps. But, we still have Willie “Brains: Randolph at the helm. *sigh*

      • gbaked says:

well… willie is the manager. Not a coach.

Guys like Sandy Alomar and Jerry Manual and HoJo are great to have on the bench. Not only that, but I think the more important thing is keeping them for a few years… so the players dont hear different theories year in year out.

  8. SamInNorthCakalakey says:

Maybe we should change his name from The Jacket to The Mullet.

  9. Steal Home Jose! says:

Smart man. Pound the bottom of the strike zone. OBP and BAA are incredibly low when you pitch down there.

    Fundamentals Folks!

  10. professor met says:

The guy knows what he is talking about and seems capable of communicating it to his pitchers.

  11. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

the jacket looks like a cross between mr goodbody and bob ross lets make some happy trees anyone?

  12. 1DoggLJ says:

Anyone notice how much makeup SNY puts on their guests/hosts? Peterson had the most I have ever seen! SNY, its alright if men have creases in their foreheads or a five o’clock shadow. Its allowed!!!

    • metsfan227 says:

UGH!…so glad you mentioned this it kills me every time I watch SNY.

Although I think I would challenge the ‘most makeup” award for Peterson with Steve Overmeyer. His face is sooo smooth it looks like a sheet of glass. When you see him on the road it only makes it worse since you can see what his face *really* looks like without all of that makeup.

  13. Nightlife says:

Unrelated, but did anyone see that Jose is on the cover of MLB 2k8? DWright had an awesome season being on the cover of the Show, maybe this will have the same effect on Jose.

    • mrose says:

nice…lets hope he has a good season then!

I’ll spend $50 to support the idea of Reyes having a great year
      lol

      • Nightlife says:

Ha. I don’t believe in cover superstitions or anything like that, but hey, DWright did have a MVP like year the same year he was on a game cover. Keep in mind the 2k series is the one Jeter has been on the cover for quite sometime.

  14. Gaspar says:

Read that when he was brought in they wanted him to structure the pitching instruction for the entire organization. Would like to know what he’s done in that regard. Would be a good roundtable discussion to have him on with pitching coaches from our rookie ball teams on up.

  15. Slob says:

Somebody from wardrobe should have insisted that he change his attire. That is an absolutely horrendous look for him.

  16. CaseStreet says:

Was it me or did he blame the meltdown on ElDuque’s injury and Maine and Perez’s inexperience? Also, I would have liked to hear what special plans he has for Pelfrey, Mulvey and Humber since they would be the “Freshman” this year. Overall, though, I thought the interview was great. Definitely got more info than the Minaya or Randolph interviews.

  17. JsyCtyFan7 says:

He’s wearing a (a not so hot) hair piece, and he’s very sensitive about it, actually.

Don’ t ya’ll remember when the Mets shaved their heads last season? He was on NBC’s “Miked Up” around that time and said that he told the team he had an odd shaped head which would be embarrassing for him if he had no hair. Poor guy. Go easy….

    • cmon_mets08 says:

really? anyone would wear a piece like that willingly?? without a gun pointed to his head?

    • coreynyc says:

He didn’t mention a hair piece. He said he was really sensitive about his head/hair bucause he was picked on alot as a child.

      • JsyCtyFan7 says:

You’re right. But I’m pretty sure he said he was picked on because of the shape of his head.

If he’s not wearing a hair piece I’d be shocked. Most hair pieces are awful anyways, aren’t they?

  18. JsyCtyFan7 says:

Nice job on Mets Hot Stove last night, Matthew.

  19. The Captain says:

So by Peterson revealing the pound the bottom strike zone pitching stategy might actually mean the real stategy is a high curve ball? Way to keep em on their toes Peterson. Either way, Peterson was very professional and interviewed extremly well.

  20. Charlie says:

Can you imagine how funny it would be if Kevin Spacey did an impersonation of Christopher Walken doing Rick Peterson?

  21. wrightnreyes says:

rick is an animal i love that mullet man. i cant wiat til baseball 2 start n see him walking out of the dugout in mid august with that jacket and that folded paper that he alwys puts in front of his face.

  22. surfmetal says:

It would have been great if he put his hand on Burkhardts shoulder during the interview.
