News: Mets sign Rincon to Minor-League Deal
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 23, 2008 4:34 pm

The Mets have signed free-agent LHP Ricardo Rincon to a minor-league deal and invited him to spring training.

In 134 appearances during 2004 and 2005, Rincon was 2–2 with a 3.95 ERA while striking out 67 batters and walking 44 through 82 innings pitched.

However, Rincon had surgery on his shoulder and elbow the following off-season; then signed with the Cardinals, who cut him; he then signed with the Giants – where he made seven appearances – and tore the ACL in his right knee while fielding a ground ball, thus ending his season.

…jeez, talk about a rough 12 months…all i can say is, minor-league contract…good luck, buddy

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…

    • wallybackman says:

Rincon, if healty, could be solid… Also, I remember reading that the twins liked feliciano… maybe he goes as a “big leauger” with some of the kids… We still have shoe and wags in the pen, why not give ricardo a shot to be the 3rd lefty?

      • wallybackman says:

plus, he was the guy once traded straight up for Brian Giles. He has talent, for sure, just needs to get over the injuries of the last year

  2. BIG17EASY says:

    Ricardo Rincon is a lefty

  3. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

YAY! WE FINALLY GOT HIM! ALL THESE MONTHS WAITING AND –

    Wait, that’s Ricardo Rincon.

    • dave27 says:

No he’s right…if I were a GM I would never pick up anyone who wasn’t an all-star, for fear of being mocked by my team’s fans.

When have we ever signed a guy to a minor league deal and had it work out? (Hint, I’m too busy to list the 8-10 examples from just the Omar era alone).

Rincon was solid when healthy. Good chance to take.

        *Applause*

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

          I was joking my friends.

I don’t judge this pickup at all. What do we lose if he sucks? $0.4 million?

If he’s good, he’s well worth the price. Not even much of a chance to take. No risk.

Secretly, I love these little pickups. If I was a GM, I’d go for every **exaggeration** young kid on the market and put him in AAA.

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

His first year was Ramon Castro, Marlon Anderson, Roberto Hernandez.

Second year he got Jose Valentin and Pedro Feliciano.

  4. Les Gomez says:

    can’t hurt……

  5. fyffem says:

    whatever

  6. jlazar2 says:

again, good signing as long as its a one year minor league deal, why not

  7. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Whoever doesn’t think that this deal is Paramount has to get a job and learn techno.

  8. Jared Blank says:

Most famous for being prominent in Moneyball.

    Welcome aboard…I think.

  9. YESSSSS NOW THIS IS THE FREE AGENT SIGNING I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR ALL OFFSEASONN

    im so excited.
who needs johan when we have Ricardo Rincon?!?!!!

  10. recoton1 says:

    WE’RE SAVED!!

  11. levinakl says:

great move to bring in R. Rincon…. no risk potential reward

  12. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Remember years ago when he closed for the Indians and the Pirates got him for Brian Giles?

Can’t hurt to have some veteran depth in AAA, maybe a little Schoe insurance if he gets hurt or sucks.

    • recoton1 says:

      IF?

    • Steal Home Jose! says:

This is the comment I was going to make, but it was the other way around. The Indians traded Giles for this guy, back when they didn’t have room in the outfield for him to play.

  13. Peter says:

Are you sure we weren’t trying to sign Juan Rincon?????

  14. nrmax88 says:

Johan should announce his retirement from baseball, and then return to sign a deal with the Mets a couple of weeks later under his new name, Johan Ricardo Valencia Villanueva Rincon El Duque, the new cuban defector. It might work, no?

  15. Kalihan42 says:

Wasn’t he on the ‘98/99 Indians? I didn’t even know this guy was still kicking around. How old is he?

That being said, why not. Minor league contract. Can fight it out for lefty utility guy. Competition can’t hurt.

  16. skillsets says:

    RICARDO RINCON??? THE RICARDO RINCON???

OH, HAPPY HAPPY DAY!!! LET’S GO METS!!! LET’S GO METS!!! LET’S GO METS!!!

WE’VE GOT THE TEAM WORK TO MAKE THE DREAM WORK!!!

    What an offseason. Unreal.

  17. ugbmets21 says:

anyone think that we are getting these guys for the minors because we will be trading a lot of our FARM SYSTEM in the next few days?>>???????>>>???

    • nyr2k2 says:

      Seems like a reasonable possibility.

At the same time, there’s a good deal of turnover at the AAA level each season, so we’ll be needing some depth there regardless of whether we make a move.

  18. supermannino says:

It’s a good deal to me.

  19. Big Lou says:

Everyone saying the farm will be bare, so now were getting some depth. I think we can start ordering our #57 jerseys.

  20. ravin108 says:

can they sign me to a minor league deal?

  21. craigswandive says:

why no post on endy getting resigned?

  22. skip says:

Omar always starts signing AAA veterans this time every off season. Hopefully, this year is because a trade is looming…………..

    • mr.metguy says:

yeah, if we had made a big trade last year, our outfield would be Beltran, Alou, and Ruben Sierra. this year it would be… whoever and Beltran

  23. The Glider says:

Well, reading this thread of posts has make my day. Thanks for the laughs guys.

  24. The Glider says:

Well, reading the posts on this thread has made my day. Thanks for the laughs guys.

  25. mcohen12 says:

This is just one of those guys they get before the start of the season to compete in Spring Training… He used to be solid, so maybe we have something here….

  26. bringbackBennyA says:

I could not agree more. Carlos Beltran’s wife Jessica was always meant for the proffesor segment. Trust me. Jose should spend more time in the cage, and getting to bed at a reasonable hour.

  27. mrose says:

i can’t stand people who post their thoughts in more than one thread to get a response

I highly doubt hes mentally retarded and I for one do understand what hes saying, and i have many friends, who actually understand it (meaning they speak spanish fluently)

I don’t speak it fluently but can pick out enough words to know…

congrats , you’ve been recognized on your 2nd post of this

    troll

  28. recoton1 says:

And if possible, he should also lay off the cocaina during the seaon…

  29. bringbackBennyA says:

Those ads are so sad. But that is hillarious. Props where they are owed

  30. recoton1 says:

things will neber be the sang aghen

  31. LetsGetMetsmerized says:

He signed a minor league contract with the Mets too. Second baseman, tore up his knee last year, remember?
