Before some fans continue to get out of whack, realize that this is not the luxury tax payroll number. The Mets actually had a luxury tax payroll of roughly $140 million in 2007. That put them at #3 in the majors, behind only the Red Sox and Yankees. I'm guessing the Mets had the highest differential between the luxury tax payroll and actual one in the majors. This was due to the number of players who were in the early years of back-loaded contracts.

Therefore, any complaints of cheapness are largely unwarranted and way off target.

normally i love bashing the wilpons but there was no FA player at any position that we needed and refused to pay this year. Although I was very upset when we really made no push at all for soriano last year. One good thing is we should have alot of salary coming off the books so id be SHOCKED if we dont sign someone next offseason (tex, dunn, pitcher x).

Did anyone consider that maybe they have to pocket a few million because they are opening a new stadium that they financed basically by themselves and have to service a gigantic amount of debt?

But yeah, they are cheap.

That is correct, I think they have shown more willingness in the last few years to get what they need and pay for it. They would have given Zito a good contract but not what he got. Soriano was considered a luxury and was not paid for because we already had players at every position. That still would have been my wish last year, Soriano would have helped a lot when Alou went down.
As for this year the only thing left that will increase payroll
Trading for Santana
Signing a guy like Loshe or Livan
Adding depth like Mench.
Even if we did all of them it would not get us above Boston or the Yankee's so what else would these complainers like us to do?

But who should they have spent it on? Remember that the Yankee's are a veteran team. They have to spend much more money on 3B and SS. Just those 2 positions alone make up for much of the difference. Also, don't forget that the AL has to pay for a DH. No one ever seems to mention that. You have to spend much more on a DH than a normal bench player.

Exactly. We have a lower payrole because of Maine, Perez, Reyes, and Wright. All young and cheap.

FACT

stop rooting for the team if you hate it so much, or stop spending money on them, whatever

FACT

start realizing this IS a business and no other team in professional sports runs their business like the Yankees do

FACT

This whole Freddie Coupons thing is annoying, spending money on bad free agents will not make us win anything

Out of that list I would have signed Soriano. He would have slotted into RF/2B quite well.
As for the other pitchers, if Omar had signed one of those then everyone would have been complaining about not giving Pelfrey a shot.

spending money on the farm isn't just about paying over slot (and that assumes there are fantastic players slipping down to the late 1st round).

To me, it means providing the resources to have the best facilities and coaching and training staffs. That includes the new favorite foreign (Dominican) academies.

I know the Mets have an academy, and seem to spend plenty on bonuses to international signees. And it sounds like they are willing to bend the slot rules now.

Not sure how much they spend on the farm infrastructure, but I would guess it is a fair amount, especially since Omar overhauled the minor league system a few years ago.

Still, if you want good prospects, nothing beats good talent evaluation (for the draft, and trades).
