Read: Wright on Mets Chances
By Chris Mazzone - Jan 23, 2008 10:13 pm

Anthony DiComo from MLB.com caught up with David Wright during a recent charity event, during which the young third baseman helped to dedicate a New York Mets room at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

Wright had a lot to say about the Mets chances this season, including…

“Hopefully, all of us are better than last year…Just because we haven’t made any changes, doesn’t mean that we aren’t going to come in and be better players individually. I think we need to improve as a team. The answer isn’t free agency; the answer isn’t making these big trades. It’s looking inside…But obviously a Johan guy wouldn’t hurt.”

…i know i’m in the minority of Mets fans on this one, but this is how i’ve felt all along…

…sure, i would love for the Mets to get santana, or make another significant acquisition, but if they don’t, it’s not like this team is finished…there’s reason to believe the Mets will get more from pedro this year, and that reyes won’t wear down, and that delgado might give them just a little bit more, and so on…

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

…i agree, chris…although, i want santana, because i still believe it is important for this team, in this city, heading in to a new stadium, in a competitive division, to get an ace…and since that ace cannot be acquired on the open market, it has to be by trade…for me, it’s more opportunistic, in terms of taking advantage of a market shift, than it is tactical, with regards to filling out a rotation…

For more quotes by Wright, during his day at the Ronald McDonald House, check out the Bergen Record, Star-Ledger, Newsday, Daily News and the New York Post.

The problem with not landing Santana is that we’re stuck with an aging and injury prone 2 spots in the rotation with pedro and Duque while having a gaping hole in the back end of the rotaion and never having replaced Glavine’s 200 innings.

No matter if Delgado improves, or Reyes gets better, etc….if the rotation is that thin we’ll be playing from behind in most games and burning out the pen even fatser than last year (which is saying something)…..and we all know that pitching is what wins.

    • stickguy says:

you make a good point that the key is probably depth.

Glavines innings will be replaced. And quite likely, Pedro and Duque will have some “vacation” time

So they need to have enough depth to avoid last years problems (Park and Lawrence time), and maybe just as important, if some pen guys wear out, have viable replacements to call in, and use.

And not to beat a dead horse, if you do trade for Santana, at the cost of at least 2 likely minor league call ups, you are more likely to spend time with Odalais Perez in the rotation.

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

true — mulvey and humber would be decent spot guys in august — but let’s be honest. Omar/Willie would bypass them for a quick look at Byung-Yung Kim or Jose Lima.

  2. icedrake523 says:

How about we get Santana and he can improve individually with everyone else?

  3. Joe Bacci says:

put a C on your chest David.

  4. DoYouSeeInHD says:

I think we should get Johan Santana, then package him with a bunch of our minor leaguers to get L Millz back. I love that guy.

    • metsfan227 says:

LOL…I’m laughing at the idea that we would need Santana AND other minor leaguers to get Milledge back.

      You must really love him.

      • metfan24 says:

i doubt theyll give us milledge back stupid trade on minaya’s part

        • starz31 says:

I guess you haven’t learned anything from Omar…you HAVE to give his trades time to pan out. After this season, come back and say whether we regret it. Maybe we will, maybe not.

Just ask John Maine and Ollie Perez why we traded for them…The john maine deal was BUST to everyone here at the time….man that was a bad trade wasn’t it, i wish we had benson back.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Omar’s next trade sucks and the Wilpon’s aren’t spending any money in 2011.

        • gowrightgo says:

I think it will be impossible to judge the success of the Milledge trade in just one year. I am a big supporter of Milledge and thought he earned the right to stay and be the starter. I also think he would have been very good for us long term and I think the sportswriters and a few vets soured Omar and Mgt on his attitude leaving a path that could only have lead to his trade.

Regardless….Milledge is in a tough place to get good offensive numbers. Not only is the entire lineup pretty lousy providing no protection and no incentive for teams to pitch to his strengths (fastball middle in), but the part is a beast and hrs there are hard to come by. Conversely….Church will get more opportunity’s to hit his pitch in this lineup and although known as a pitchers park…it is really more fair than pitcher friendly. Pitcher friendly would be RFK stadium.

I see Church seriously outperforming Milledge this year due to the above factors but I still believe the trade was a mistake and that the future for Milledge is much brighter than that of Church. Church is a pretty good player but not a star. Milledge’s low part of his development curve when projected honestly would be considered higher than what Church is right now as something of a more polished and finished player in terms of his development.

Sorry so long. Just my .02

  5. BlueTrane says:

I agree with Matt. I also think that the “Fan Confidence Rating” should be changed to the “Getting Santana Confidence Rating”
Other than basing it only on the collapse, there is no reason why our confidence should be that low going into this year…

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

My “getting Santana confidence rating” is pretty low right now. About a “3″. Just think if it was going to happen it would have by now. Hope I’m wrong. I really want us to get him. Its a neccesity.

  6. Cactus says:

The most important thing is that if the Mets miss out on Santana, they can’t get nobody>/b> like they did after they missed out on Barry Zito last year, and go into the season with holes in the pitching staff, hoping not-yet-ready youngsters and/or retreads will round out the rotation.

I’ve had enough of orange haired pitchers being run there. In 2006 they could afford to give those games away, not in 2007 – that killed them last year. And not in 2008, either. It will kill them again.

  7. MetsRant says:

I wish, just once, he’d say “God damn, we were shit and we need an upgrade right now. And the attitude needs to change”

C’mon, Eddie Munster, you can do it. You are untouchable. Let it out.

  8. lilroller1986 says:

my question before we make a trade for santana is that is this trade going to hurt us the year after this because we pretty much might lose pedro and ollie(boras price out) so we lose them and their future backups so then were going to hit the free agent market to pick up terrible options and then we will probably lose alou and his future backups gomez and martinez so basically were out six seven guys for a guy who might win five more games 20 instead of the probable 12 15 from pelfrey

    • lilroller1986 says:

love it for this year though

      • gowrightgo says:

That has to be part of the equation. If the deal happens…they must resign OP and pray Pedro is worth resigning for at least 2 more years so the rotation is full.
We keep Pelfrey so there would be extreme pressure to get him to the servicable level now.

a rotation of Santana, Maine, OP, Pelfrey and possibly Pedro or some other young guy we have not seen yet is still pretty good.

Any rotation that starts off Santana, Maine and OP is pretty good

        • MudvilleNine says:

I still say they have to sign OP now. Before any deal for Santana. For every potential FA pitcher for next year that signs or resigns, his price goes up. Boras has to worry about a potential regress by OP or injury, same as us. It would be easier and cheaper right now to extend him then it will be mid-season, or after the season, or after Santana, Sabbathia, and Sheets sign. For a good, fair contract, Boras will let him sign now.

    • followmelevi says:

great point… this one needs to be repeated over and over again to our fellow short-sighted mets fans

  9. Number41 says:

That David Wright is a fine young man.
He should be ready for the “C” on his uni come Citifield.
(Did I mention, “Retire #17″; and Koosman and Harrelson)

  10. KnowItAll says:

“sure, i would love for the Mets to get santana, or make another significant acquisition, but if they don’t, it’s not like this team is finished…”

3rd place without santana. and 2nd place WITH him. mets need a big bat. alou will go on the extended DL by june. drite and delgado will be slumpy. beltran will be beltran. but i expect good things from reyes. bottom line…omar misssed the boat by not aquiring a big dependable bat. well, at least he signed valentin. this team is worse than last year….and definitely worse than the 2006 team. believe it

    • Pedro says:

Wow, aren’t you being a little over-pessimistic? This team is not the Tigers but I don’t think there is a much better offense in the National League! The Phillies are pretty good, though they lost Rowand, the Braves are ok but they lost Andruw Jones…what other team’s offense is comparable to the Mets? The Dodgers?? The Mets have 3 legitimite young stars in their everyday lineup and they have veteran stars surrounding them, I don’t think for a second that offense is a concern right now.

  11. Peter says:

David, David, David . . . what’s with that faux hawk you’re sporting in the Daily News pictures? You can’t be a team captain and leader looking that way, the guys will laugh at you if you try being serious!!!!!

  12. Mr. Metster says:

Forget Santana. We need to sign his brother, Franklin. As this excerpt from today’s Times’ article indicates, he’s the better ballplayer:

Santana is the second of five children and apparently was not the best baseball player in the group when they were children. His brother Franklin, now a lawyer, was more skilled, Jesús said. Johan has two daughters and has known his wife, Yasmile, since he was 9.

  13. gipper913 says:

    Exactly correct.

  14. wilmack88 says:

I understand that for the most part, a trade is the only way to acquire an ace pitcher. In this situation though, I feel like Johan Santana in his current situation will become a free agent. Why would he want to resign with the Twins? They have publicly stated to be in a rebuilding phase, and he has publicly expressed his problems with the management of the team. I think the Mets should hold off a year and then open up the wallets for the 2009 season, when I bet you he’ll be a free agent, with the Mets at the top of his list. Anyone else agree?

  15. stickguy says:

That would be the ideal way for this to play out. I agree with Chris that the Mets can do fine this year even without Johan, and certainly be competitive. And, if they keep the prospects and have use from them in 2009 (on the field, or to fill the other major holes coming up), along with adding Johan, they could be primed for a multi year dominant run.

  16. starz31 says:

Its easy for us to say “lets go out and open the wallets up for this guy for 2009.” That may be true…but for a position player.
The Mets have said all along that they really want to stick to 5 year deal, maybe 6 years. This hesitancy wont change for next year. Maybe they’ll go out and offer 6 years, but theyre not gonna just go out and offer 7 years 200 million to blow the guy out of the water. Its not gonna happen. If San Fran was willing to spend 120 and 7 years on barry ZITO, then why wouldnt anyother team in the league (not the marlins) go out and offer at least 7 years 150. I’m saying its not a closed shut case that we will blow him out of the water in free agency.

    The time is now.

  17. wilmack88 says:

The Mets are a major market team who can afford to pay Santana whatever he wants. With no salary cap, it makes much more sense to invest a huge contract in santana then to trade our best prospects for a year of santana, and then give him a huge contract anyway.

  18. gowrightgo says:

totally correct. SHould this play out that he is a Twin this year then a Free Agent in 2008 offseason….The METS will have to be comfortable being the the top bidder. Its only money. I understand the philosophy but next year we run the risk of losing Oliver Perez, El Duque and Pedro in one offseason.

If he makes it to Free Agency next year, the METS must spend the $$ and years necessary to get him. They must also resign OP and Pedro (assuming Petey has a pretty good and healthy season).

Add in then that we will have kept Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey and Guerra along with Gomez and Fmart….i can see the championship dominance come into play for a good 5 year period.

We will be losing Alou for sure but can add in a Gomez or Fmart. We may resign Delgado, may sign up a Texiera or simply turn Fmart into a 1b. Whatever happens…if the kids are here and they are close to as good as the METS PR machine has hyped them to be ….the future will be exceptionally bright!

  19. MudvilleNine says:

There’s only one road block to the Mets getting him next year in free agency, The Yankees. Yes they’ll be concentrating on getting Tex to play 1st base for them but they could also go after Santana. If Hughes or more likely Joba flops as a starter, and they dont make the playoffs, the Yanks will go after Johan fullbore. The Yanks will be losing big contracts next year also. To just say we can sign him next year isn’t being realistic. We’ll be in a bidding war, and though the Mets can afford it, they’ll end up giving him more then he would have got if we just traded for him now.
