Quote: The Teenage Hitting Machine
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 24, 2008 12:13 pm

In a webcam segment for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal refers to Mets OF Fernando Martinez as, “A hitting machine, who could reach the majors this season at age 19.”

hitting machine…wow…

…umm, isn’t this the same farm system that was supposedly being laughed at during december…now, i’m looking at a teeange hitting machine

In any news beat–sports, politics, whatever–the “narrative” can turn on a dime. At the winter meetings, the Mets’ prospects were garbage. Now they’re highly prized.

Nothing has changed, really, except the writers’ depiction of reality.

    • gowrightgo says:

Too funny to watch this analysis unfold over the course of the offseason. There are more turns on the value of the prospects in the system than that road in San Francisco, Lombard street.

Ridiculous. The system is neither as good as some on this site believe nor as bad as some in the media had suggested during the winter meetings. The only opinion that really matters is that of our GM and the others in the game

      • stickguy says:

Don’t confuse the system with individual prospects. The system could as a whole suck, but there could still be a couple of stud prospects hidden among the trash.

        • gowrightgo says:

I get your point and it is well taken. A few gems does not a great system make. Good point

  2. zen says:

i love everything i hear about f-mart and don’t want to trade him. he’s probably the only future top-level star in the system.

that being said, he’ll be 19 next year. zero chance he’s in the majors. he hit .271 in a ball last year. .191 in high a (a reason for rushing his promotion.

    • ravi3 says:

he was also hurt during the end of the season…he *could* see the majors at the end of the season, and it would probably be a good idea to see how he would adjust to the competition, considering we will have an opening in LF, and 1b after the ‘08 season

    SELL HIGH

  5. onteora says:

Rosenthal, as much as I enjoy his reporting, is a Mets fan. He self-admittedly reads this site on a daily basis. Don’t you think he’s using his influence as a national writer to increase the perceived value of the one guy who is allegedly “holding up Santana from the Mets”? I agree with the above post, there is ZERO chance that Martinez hits the majors next year with the Mets, regardless if Church, Gomez, etc. are traded away.

    • icedrake523 says:

Even if he is a Mets fan, it’s nice to see a credible reporter actually praising a Mets prospect. Usually, our prospects are laughed at and reporters constantly say stuff like “other teams don’t like the Mets prospects as much as the Mets”.

      • EncinoMets says:

If I know Rosenthal, he will bash the Mets for giving up way too many good prospects for Santana and ridicule their farm system going forward.

    • darkstar73 says:

I don’t believe that, because Ken is usually as harsh on the Mets as anyone. He may be a fan, but he’s of the cynical type and always will take a chance to bash on them.

      • EncinoMets says:

Rosenthal , for years (not so much recently), would always take a pessimistic outlook on the Mets and gush about the Braves at every chance.
Coupled with the fact that reporters are supposed to be objective, i highly doubt that Rosenthal is a Mets fan, or ever was partial to them.
In my mind he’ll always be a Braves homer.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I hope you’re basing “Rosenthal is a Mets fan” on more than the fact he reads this blog. I would imagine that he also reads popular blogs for other teams as part of his job. I do not know Ken Rosenthal, but if I had to assign fandom to him I’d give him Orioles fandom since he spent his seminal years covering them and still resides in Maryland. That’s just a guess, if you know him then I defer to you.

      • darkstar73 says:

no, he’s actually a Mets fan, that’s well known

        • GravediggerHebner says:

I’ll take your word for it, you’ve been here since I joined and I respect your input but I have to add that I’ve been a Met fan since the mid ’70s and this is news to me. I am glad they’re finally moving out of the Polo Grounds though (ha ha).

    • shea_guevara says:

Maybe, but he was also one of many baseball writers who was not high on the Mets prospects last year.

I think this more reflects the current “hot” story that the Mets are in the running for Santana than it does a desire to hype the Mets’ prospects.

    • krumbledkookie says:

The Twins have one of the best scouting systems in baseball… they know how to evaluate talent, and won’t be influenced by anything reporters say.

      • Coolpapabell says:

Rosenthal has been luke warm on F-Mart. He has said that he is the best prospect in our system, but has never gone as far as fawn over him by saying he is a hitting machine.

F-Mart is a hitting machine, and we have know that for a while. The only question is if he will be a hitting machine like a Nick Johnson or like Miggy Cabrera.

  6. MDMetfan says:

Keep Martinez even if we don’t get Santana. Sign Garcia who should be ready about the time El Duque needs a vacation.

  7. Kalihan42 says:

    This just in!!

Fox sports tries to make themselves look smart, after looking dumb. Rosenthal named flip flopper of the year

  8. SheaVendor says:

Sounds like Rosenthal started working for the Twins and he’s trying to get the Sox and Yankees to up any offers they may have.

  9. lilroller1986 says:

i dont agree with the young juan gonzalez or yourng sammy comparisons. i’ve seen him play and i think of him as 20-20 guy as opposed to 40-0 zero and lets not forget that his defense outshines (even now) both of those players. maybe a tad slower corner version of beltran is best

  10. KnowItAll says:

fmart wasnt much of a “hitting machine” the times i watched him play at binghamton last summer.

    • darkstar73 says:

18 year old in AA recovering from an injury, but hey, form your own opinion. The kid has skills, anyone can see that. And to the above poster, I don’t see him as a 20-20 guy, he’s a 35 HR hitter eventually, who will also hit above .300. Kid’s got a sweet swing and a great approach and he’s that young. YOu simply don’t find that very often, unless you’re Migeul Cabrera or Manny Ramirez.

      • lilroller1986 says:

ill agree that maybe hell hit that many homers but what ive noticed is he is so much faster and better defensively than those he is comapred with.. i only say twenty because guys home run totals die when then get to shea. or citifield supposedly with near similar dimensions

      • KnowItAll says:

i saw him BEFORE he was injured. underwhelming.

        • darkstar73 says:

so a kid who should have been a senior in high school who was just thrown to the wolves playing AA for the first time, and that’s how you’re going to judge your entire opinion of him? Please….

        • KnowItAll says:

hey, i wasnt the one calling this 18 yr old a HITTING MACHINE

        • cb32 says:

Stop arguing with him. Check the username. He knows it all!!

  11. SteveBrooklyn says:

I think we should keep F-Mart. I saw him play last year at Binghamton, and he showed good power for an 18-year old. He also looked good defensively.

  12. gbaked says:

A little off topic but mentioned in the video…

baltamore is going to mess up the bedard situation. I bet they dont trade him, then run into the same issue the twins are having with santana. In that nobody wants to trade all those prospects for 1 year of a guy.

  13. Mattyb2722 says:

Okay you miserable Met Fans. I am one too so don’t worry. This Ken Rosenthal character is just like all other analysts and so-called baseball experts. Anyone remember a month ago when Starks and all those other great Baseball minds said “Santana will be traded by the end of the meetings”. Well that didn’t happen and to say Fernando Martinez is major league ready is absurd. I think its possible Ken Rosenthal may never have seen this kid play, because he’s definately never been to Binghamton NY. I saw Mr. Martinez every home game while he wasn’t hurt, and he is FAR FAR FAR from major league ready. I think its guys like Ken Rosenthal that make these hot stove reports so rediculous. Every year now we hear names drop from Ramirez, to Oswalt, and now Santana. Just watch baseball, if someone comes to our team love them, if someone screws us hate them. (Glavine) This is sports not life or death fella’s… LETS GO METS in 08!!! If it doesn’t happen, theres always citifield.

  14. recoton1 says:

As per Omar, We traded Milledge because we need to win now. F-mart does not help us win now. Johan helps us win now. Using Omar’s logic, we cannot allow this prospect to hold up the trade since we need to win now. I don’t care if this kid is the next coming of Roy Hobbs… ship him.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Agreed. If the point is to win now, it’s a no-brainer. Like I’ve said, he could turn into Alex Escobar or Ochoa. Santana is obviously the real deal. Get it done.

    • onteora says:

Yes. And I think a lot of people are selling Santana short on his age. Some fans are acting like Santana has one or two good years left in the arm, when in fact he’s not even 30. Barring an injury, he could have at least 3-4 more dominant seasons. Assuming he declines at a normal rate afterward, he can still have some productive Leiter/Glavine-type years into his mid/late 30’s. Obviously this assumes that the Mets can extend his contract. But as high as Martinez’s ceiling is, Santana has already reached the highest ceiling possible…Best pitcher in baseball.

  15. krumbledkookie says:

Or – he could be Alex Escobar.

    • Slob says:

Or he could be Willie Mays.

      • krumbledkookie says:

Even if he turns out to be a good ballplayer, he won’t be Willie Mays. There is a greater chance that he’s Alex Escobar than Willie Mays.

Or we could agree that he’ll be Fernando Martinez, and will write his own story :-)

  16. Bats in the Belfry says:

At this point I am cautiously optimistic that Johan will be a Met, knowing full well that deals can fall apart. However, out of shear fanaticism I cling to the idea that deep down that Mr. Santana’s blood runs blue and orange. If there be any trepidation on the matter best consult Mr. Met or David Wright (has anyone seen them together at the same time?)

That being said, the dream for Omar has always been Gomez and Martinez flanking Beltran on opening day ‘09.
Let us indulge ourselves then to a dream sequence……

To accommodate needs at both ends, the Mets package Church, Pelfrey , Gotay, and Mulvey, and a PTBN for Santana

Leaving the Mets in ‘08 and even more so in ‘09 with superior pitching, defense, hell one of the best clubs in the game, clear cut winners.

Gomez and Martinez continue to develop..getting a trip up here and there in 08, bring in a guy like Mench or Wilkerson to platoon with Chavez, and for the love of all thats baseball LET ENDY PLAY!

    • krumbledkookie says:

I realize it’s a dream sequence, but there is a reason Gotay hasn’t been mentioned in trade talks. Either he’s untouchable (which he’s not), or no one wants him.

I think Met fans understand what Gotay brings to the table, so most of us will be happy to keep him around.

      • stickguy says:

just because he wasn’t mentioned doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be included. He is far from worthless.

More likely, the various talking heads just regurgitate the same old crap, and don’t bother to really think things through like a GM. They just pick the names they know the best off the top prospect list, or the names that the last writer mentioned.

If the Twins are trying to compete, Gotay is certainly an interesting option. Also cheap and controllable for years to come.

Hey, Church, Mulvey and Gotay as the core 3? 2 ML players, and a guy that could win a rotation spot in ST, or at least be a mid season call up.

Just find a 4th guy that isn’t Pelfrey, Guerra, Gomez or F Mart, and go for it! This guy could be someone further down the food chain. Or even Guerra if you want it that bad.

Church, Gotay, Mulvey and Guerra. Mets get better now (although they do need a RF), and are still primed for the future.

        • gowrightgo says:

Great deal for us…not sure the Twins would even return the email if that was sent to them. Would you?

        • MudvilleNine says:

They’ll not only need a RF but a backup shortstop as well. Besides, they already have 4 secondbasemen on the roster, including one they must have liked when they traded Castillo to us. Gotay wont be included.

        • HOFMets57 says:

Agreed. Your proposal would be constituted as “RAPE.” Committed against the city of Minnesota and the snap of the fingers, firing of 1st year GM, Bill Smith.
