Buzz: Bedard is not Happy
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 26, 2008 9:40 am

In the Baltimore Sun, Jeff Zrebiec quotes O’s LHP Erik Bedard as accusing his team of a) not trying very hard to trade him, and b) not trying very hard to sign him to an extension.

According to Zrebiec, the O’s and Mariners continue to discuss Bedard, ‘with talks centered around Adam Jones.’

I look at Bedard as a safety net for the Santana trade, I think the Mets can get the Santana trade done but if not they need to take a look at Bedard.

Way off..Bedard will cost more at this point. Bedard is only a safety net if the Mets can’t sign Santana next offseason – then Bedard become a 1-year rental guy who the Mets could possibly trade for (assuming he isn’t moved before then.

      • mets17 says:

Yes, it will cost more but it wont be way off and the Mets will never trade for a one year rental guy.

Santana – Church, Guerra, Pelfrey, Mulvey

        Bedard- Gomez/FMart, Guerra, Pelfrey, Mulvey

Not way off but it will cost more due to money and age.

All I stated is they need to look at Bedard if the Santana trade falls through

Looks like bedard isnt happy with the O’s organization. They should try as hard as they can to trade him. He might effect the clubhouse negatively.

id keep him for now if i was BAL. unless im wrong they have him under control for 08 and 09. pretty much no chance they’ll cough enough up to sign him but they got another trade deadline and an entire other offseason to deal him. and as others have pointed out the mets and M’s are the only two active teams willing to pony up to add an ace at this time.

    • jdon says:

he had some arm soreness(tiredness) that shelved him in September. Is this a prelude to some kind of injury? If so, they could be up the creek if they wait another year. I would wait if I thought I had a shot to keep him long term. But with no shot, why risk it?

  3. mets17 says:

If I had a guess, Bedard will get traded next off season. Baltimore will get one more season out of him but trade him before his last season before FA, just like the Santana situation.

    • TG1 says:

i agree but they will be stupid to do that. the reason the twins arent getting what they want in a trade is because whatever team trades for him will only have him under control for 1 year. after that the team will have to sign him to and extension

billy beane really is smart. he traded haren when his value was highest and had a few years left under contract. Oakland got what, 5 top prospects??? learn from this Minaya, trade a player when there rated as high as it can be (he should have traded milledge 2 years ago for Manny), instead of getting ryan church and snieder

  4. The fact that Orioles management stinks and tries its best to ruin what used to be a great baseball francise is old news

    • gowrightgo says:

They were and are a terrific uniform and great location to play in but everything else is a disaster. Angelos has ruined that team.

Still they have the money to keep him if they want. It will be near impossible to trade with them for Bedard. It also seems ridiculous to trade that guy since he is exactly the type of guy you want to build around not remove from your team

  5. stickguy says:

Bedard is the guy that could easily plow up on you. He had a could season last year, but wasn’t heshut down late?

I just don’t think he is going to stay on the field over the next few years.

  6. Gil the Pill says:

Bedard was shut down the last month of 07. Be very wary of signing him. he has never pitched 200 inning any season, he had 182ip last year and 196ip in 06. before that he didnt pitch a whole season. If you ask me his stamina is in question.

  7. The Glider says:

Why don’t we just dangle similar deals to each clubs and see who bites first?

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

The Orioles arent in the same situation as Minny. Unless I am wrong Baltimore doesnt need to trade Bedard because of money issues. They arent afraid to spend so they can resign him when they need to if they so choose. They have been known to spend. Dont know why they are even considering trading Bedard in the first place unless to see if they can be blown away.

  8. stickguy says:

The Orioles are in a slightly different situation, but for 3 reasons:

    1) Bedard is under control for 2 more seasons.
    2) He has a history of injuries, including wearing out last year
    3) The Orioles aren’t likely to compete for the playoffs in 2008

So, different situation than the Twins, and if they really don’t expect to sign him to a huge extension (and trade him instead), then they should try to trade him now, looking for a big package.

Logically they probably get more now than in a year, but if they don’t get an offer they like, they canjust keep him and try again.
