Buzz: Bedard will Go to M’s
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 27, 2008 8:35 pm

M’s OF Adam Jones will fly to Baltimore tomorrow morning to take a physical ‘so he can be dealt to the Orioles in exchange for pitcher Erik Bedard,’ writes columnist Geoff Baker in a post to his blog for the Seattle Times.

Update7 am

In a report to SI.com, Jon Heyman writes that there is still concern within Baltimore’s front office regarding this deal, which could include up to four more prospects in addition to Jones.

According to Heyman, Baltimore could ship 3B Brain Roberts off to the Cubs not longer after the Bedard deal is complete.

Meanwhile, at Prospect Insider, Jason Churchill characterizes the deal as 99 percent done, while citing the same set of prospects in the deal as Heyman.

by the way, hat’s off to churchill, who has been like white on rice with this story for months now

Interesting, of the three Santana was the one that everyone said would definitely be traded this offseason. There seemed a much bigger chance Bedard or Haren stayed put.

That and the fact that once the off-season winter meetings began, a Santana trade would come first with all others moves to follow. The thinking was that a Santana move would dictate any move of the two other big pitchers (Bedard and Haren) and any other big deals in MLB.

Now all eyes will focus on a Santana deal…or, wait haven’t they all been focused on him all winter long anyway?

I’m new to the board and I love this place…my only regret is that I wish I’d found it sooner.

everyone probably got sick of waiting for the twins to pull the trigger.

yea i check this site too much as well. i would have to say that although Santana is better then haren and bedard, there value is higher. Bill Smith waited too long and he will get muich less than what he wanted at the beginning of this ordeal

there is a leeson in this to other teams….approach a star player 3 years before he can be a free agent. if he signs then great but if not you can trade him and get more value. its funny becuase Santana is the best pitcher in baseball is only 29 and the twins will get less for him then guys who had ONE good year

Well lets all cross our fingers in the hope that this will light a fire under Smith’s ass. Also he can now point this deal out to his fans and justify taking the Mets package.

This seems to help the Twins. One less pitcher on the market who the Mets say they can turn their attention to.

I wonder if the Twins will now put the squeeze on the Mets to include FMart in the deal.

yeah, but the mets havent shown any interest in bedard since the winter meetings. i see where youre coming from but i doubt the mets were using bedard as leverage

Besides the fact that the Mets couldn’t use Bedard seriously as leverage–the Orioles did seem hesitant to trade with Omar again from reports/rumors–fact is that the hefty, richest contract to a pitcher in baseball history that hangs with Johan effectively cut down the Twins’ negotiating power to begin with. Things have hardly changed and thanks to the brass for N.Y.Y. and BOS, it’s effectively the Mets left as the only suitor left that can afford that price. The only thing that could be problematic for the Mets is the oft-mentioned threat of Yankees/Red Sox suddenly jumping back in, and a wild little scenario: Some team that had been looking at Bedard instead yet could afford Santana (but was reluctant to do so) all of a sudden enters the foray. The latter sounds rather far-fetched although I suppose is not impossible. In sum things are where they have always been with the Santana talks: stagnant. Or so it seems.

i agree with most of what you said although it was Santana himself who said he only wnats to play for boston or NY.
not only does he want (and deserve) the biggest contract ever for a pitcher, he wants to be on a team that can sustain winning for years to come.

Bill Smith f..cked up. he should have taken Hughes while he had the chance. he must trade santana before this year.

I saw today in either the post or daily news an interview with Hank Steinbrenner. he said that he is going to give the young pitchers a chance aka no Santana.

Hankbrenner also said he would never, ever, negotiate with Alex Rodriguez after he opted out. Look what happened there. I trust him about as far as I can throw his fat ass.

I hope not. I’d like to keep F-Mart, Guerra and Mulvey. Trade Church, Gomez, Pelfrey and Humber for Santana. Trade Wagner for pitching prospects and flip them for Jason Bay, since the M’s can’t get him any more (Sanchez closes). And we should get Livan to give time for Mulvey and Guerra until 2009 and 2010 respectively). We’d be good for now and the next few years.

Our 2010 rotation would be Santana, Maine, Perez, Guerra, and Mulvey. Our OF would be F-Mart, Beltran and Bay.

P.S. Sorry for posting this again, but my previous post was removed for some reason.

i hope this is a joke, Sanchez closing? how can we count on him being healthy and fill the most important spot in the bullpen? This is crazy talk

Maybe, but he throws heat and as a closer he would pitch less than as a SU man. In 07, Billy Wagner pitched 68.3 innings in 66 games, while Aaron Heliman pitched 86 innings in 81 games. So possibly I’m not that crazy. Just a little. Plus, I’m not a Wagner fan.

No, you’re not the only one. Though I trust the baseball people know more about him them we do.

I dont think this deal helps the Twins out at all. It seems as if the market was initially awaiting for Santana to be traded, however no one seemed to think it would take this long. My feeling is that teams couldnt wait any longer to decide the fate of their team. The Twins are pushing the envelope here. They are losing leverage every day. As soon as this deal is official, Santana’s fate will be decided. My guess, he is resigned or shipped to the Mets. The only way this trade could help the Twins is in the event that the unnamed players turned out to be phenomenal prospects, and a bunch of them.

Good Luck Omar!

P.S. I dont think signing Livan prior to this deal would make too much of a difference. Yes, he is a starter, but he is NOT an Ace. On the other hand, if Bedard or someone of his skill level were part of discussions, then the Twins may have to bite solely on the risk of losing suitors.

Only 2 reasons seem to make sense for the Os to trade him now. Either they were blown away by the package (to be seen), or (and IMO, quite likely) they were worried about him staying healthy for another full year.

Gotta figure that his value peaked after last year, and if he came down with arm problems again in 2008, they weren’t going to get squat for him.

totally qagree. the orioles know something that most of baseball does not. i feel due to his size and body type that he is what the mets thought of in regards to Kazmir.

Random thought: How about Lo Duca needing surgery? The body starts to break down after you get off the roids/HGH. Glad he isn’t a Met anymore.

Interesting.. so you mean when you make a trade offer with good players, other teams will accept, and a trade actually gets made?

Interesting… I wonder if the Mets know this…

It’s actually th Twins that don’t seem to know it!

Let’s just see what the final package from the Ms is though.

If Omar really did offer Gomez, Guerra, Mulvey and Humber, that is a solid package with good players, for a 1 year of Santana (which is all the Twins have left)

Fair enough… the rumors last week were pretty good deals for the Os.. but we don’t know for sure

All I’m saying is if its a game of musical chairs.. there’s only one left..

I hope Omar knows what hes doing.

Yes, the Mets do know this. They also know ZERO teams want to provide 5 players for the RIGHTS to pay $150 million over 6 years. That’s why the big market Yankees and Red Sox have NOT sealed the deal. Maybe somebody can teach them how to run winning franchises that continue to develop talent.

is it possible, now that the m’s have added bedard to their rotation, that the angels make an offer and become a serious player in the santana sweepstakes?

Excellent point..

I know Zito and Johan are much different players.. but you can’t not notice the similarities…

Would anyone be surprised if an unknown team showed up and paid the price that the Mets are so confident no one will, and end up with Johan?

That would suck! Its likely to happen but I am praying to God it doesn’t and he is good to us and we seal the deal with Santana!

Angels won’t get involved. Twins tried getting them in before and it got them nowhere. Angels are usually inactive anyway.
