Buzz: Mets Remain Confident, As Usual
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 28, 2008 3:29 pm

During the Marchand Minute on today’s Max Kellerman Show, ESPN 1050’s Andrew Marchand quotes a baseball executive – with knowledge of the Johan Santana trade – as saying the Mets feel as if the ball is in Minnesota’s court, and its up to Twins GM GM Bill Smith to make the next move.

According to Marchand, the Mets remain confident, as they have been since prior to the Winter Meetings, but do not feel anything has changed from their perspective.

I agree…Omar should insist the Twins make a formal trade proposal…otherwise the Twins will take any Mets proposal to the Yanks and Sox to give them a chance to top it.

  2. nevets72 says:

Cited no particular source, I belive there may or may not be a deal in place. This should be announced immediately, but due to circumstances, may actually never be announced.

hmm…im gettin the feeling that it’s been going like this….

Well, also according to no particular source, the Mets, Yanks and BoSox are all in the mix, with the Mets feeling confident. The Yanks however feel confident that they can snag Johan with a Phil Hughes centered package, which may or may not be offered, while word out of Boston is that if Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester are offered in the same package, they can have Johan, but they’re not doing that, but they’re not really saying if they are doing that or not.
The Mets can offer quantity, not quality, however there is buzz now that Heilman, Church, and Pelfrey will be in a package and that should provide the Twins with the ready ML talent necessary to pry Johan away. But there is no real credit to that, but perhaps there is.
Have a headache yet? NO, great, let’s continue
The twins can still keep Johan however if they do they run the risk of losing him in free agency with nothing to show for it but 2 draft picks, however bill smith doesnt want to be the guy who trades Johan for a bogus package, because then maybe the draft picks will be better than a bogus package, which may or may not turn out to be 2 studs in the draft. The Twins could go into training camp with Johan, however word out of Johan camp is that he is demanding a trade before training camp. This demand cannot be confirmed however. Johan’s team has denied a demand internally, but the feeling is he is demanding to be traded. Johan can invoke a no trade clause during the season, with which Johan may or may not invoke during the season, barring of course he is not traded prior to camp, which he has not demanded. And that a trade scenario can be reached during the season, and said mid season trade Johan is said to reject a trade during.
Who wants to kill themselves? GOOD, i dont either
Word out of Queens is that while Omar is lookig for a front line starter, i.e. Johan, Omar is content with going into the season with his team as is. Although his quest for an Ace is well known throughout the league. Omar may or may not pull the trigger on Fernando Martinez, whom the twins feel is the prize of the organization. While some say Carlos Gomez is. This is all assuming that the Yanks don’t put phil hughes in a package, which despite earlier reports of actually happening, actually isn’t happening. Unless Hank Steinbrenner has word. But according to sources Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner have been in Hank’s ear to silence that notion, and it may be working. Unless Hank decides it’s not working.
Of course again, if Boston were to Put ellsbury and lester in a package together, they can have Johan, which may prompt the yanks to panic and put Hughes in the deal. Both of those scenarios however, is unlikely. Although neither rival would want ot see Johan pitch for the other.

The jury is still out on this one folks

im goin to stick my head in the oven now, thanks for reading

I feel confident that the Mets have as good a chance as any team to get Santana should he not be traded before the season opens. But I don’t know why there is confidence of a trade to the Mets right now. Seems to me Bill Smith is stuck firmly on the pot right now. He can’t or won’t get up.

No team is going to sweeten their offer at this point. And Bill Smith won’t budge. So, be prepared to not get Santana, as he is likely to start the season with the Twins.

I just hope the Mets don’t go for Livan. I’m going to puke if that happens. They should just let the kids battle it out for the 5th spot and back up the rest of the rotation.

    • Mexworshipper says:

I think that Smith has to deal him. As soon as the season starts, he gets less for Santana. He won’t get much for him as a two or three month rental, and he’ll only get picks if he doesn’t trade him during the season. So I think the longer the Twins wait at this point, the less they get, and that added to the fact that the Sox and Skanks interest is waining as reported (but I think that could change), the pressure on the Twins increases.

      • VCarver says:

Smith seems to be stubborn as a mule. He would rather postpone the inevitable instead of having to face criticism now for his mishandling of ‘Santana.

I don’t think he’s all that concerned about maybe getting a lesser package later on. Getting to use Santana for the coming season is a plus, after all. But one thing I don’t think he’s factoring into the equation is the possibility that Santana has only gotten more irritated by how he’s handed things and kept him in the dark. If Santana is not happy during the 2008 season, I don’t know if that’s good for their club. And I don’t think there is any way he signs an extension with the Twins now.

  4. MacD81 says:

Wow Marchand. Way to add something to this story. Seriously, did this guy take a MetsBlog post from December 129th and re-read it in an effort to look like he actually works? Jeez.

  5. stickguy says:

Just let the Twins keep him and move on with the season.

I do agree, however, that Smith needs to put up a specifc proposal at this point instead of this passive-agressive BS.

Omar, etc. should tell him to give the Mets (and the others too) exactly what it will take to get Johan. And make it a formal offer, so that Omar could say yes, and have the deal done.

I get the impression (from all these postings) that Smith is the type of guy that, if he was buying a car, would ask the salesperson if he would take X for a car, then when he says OK, Smith would back away and want to go think it over some more.

So, Smith needs to settle in his mind what it would take from each team to be worth more than keeping Santana.

Then, tell each team what package(s) work, and the first one to say yeas gets Johan.

  6. fyffem says:

Smith ….pick up the phone, you dumb bastard…dial Omar..say, “Ese, I’ll take Guerra, Gomez, Mulvey, Humber.”

Don’t mind me – just practicing my Jedi mind tricks….

  7. gbaked says:

I am not even sure what I will do when I refresh metsblog and see the heading “Santana Traded To…”

Can I take off of work? Should I go get drunk right away? Should I just sit quietly and contemplate?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Hey, it’s almost like the Mets would have won something . . . except that it’s not actually a baseball game.

      Pitchers and catchers. NOW.

  8. jnkryo says:

The Twins have been hanging on to this ball for so long, they should have been called for a shot-clock violation ages ago.

  9. I love how all these media guys keep issuing the same info as if it’s new. Haven’t we been hearing pretty much the same things since 2 weeks ago?

  10. icedrake523 says:

Omar should tell Bill Smith “If you take this deal and ask the Red Sox and Yankees to up their offer, there is no way Fernando Martinez goes in this deal”

  11. bonatom says:

Side Note: I HATE ESPN.COM I hate all this INSIDER stuff, that you have to pay for… I Love Peter Gammons.. but I am not paying to read his Blog… with the Money they make from web advertising it is insulting to charge a subscription fee

  12. Charlie says:

Does anyone actually stream 1050espn? I try to sometimes, but half the time it fails to play or it craps out after a few minutes. WFAN streaming is much more stable, so I just default to it.

    • kowalski69 says:

i do, i listen to the new york feed in my cubicle. i dont get the radiomat wfan feed here because it wont get through my firewall. their andomedia new york feed tends to sometimes crap out, i think its due to high volume. the radiomat fan feed was always good at my old job, though

      • Charlie says:

It’s just so hit or miss here. I’m not particularly fond of Michael Kay, but I could use a break from Mike and Maddog right about now. The ass kissing from Phoenix has got to stop.

  13. MetsUKfan says:

Actually the ONLY way I think the Mets get Santana is if Bosox and Yankees continue their posturing.

That way Omar can slip under the radar and get him before they wake up. It would mean Twins getting desperate and Santana putting his foot down. Could happen.

If it does happen the Yankees and Bosox will be peeved in a few weeks when the reality sinks in.

    • Charlie says:

That really is the only way the Mets get Santana. The second the Sox or Yanks get determined to land him, the Mets are off to sign Lohse and/or Livan. The Mets cannot compete from a trade value standpoint if either team decides to sweeten the pot.

I’m fairly sure the Yanks and Sox know this, they don’t want to part with the players the Twins would jump at. So, here we are…

    • MetsUKfan says:

I think they do. I am sure both Bosox and Yankees are willing to offer near the Twins demands.

However neither want to get into an auction. They know that if Santana landed with the opposition it will be a PR disaster for the other. Hence the stalemate. The famous prisoners dilemma.

That stalemate is the only Mets advantage. And it gets bigger the longer the saga continues.

  14. bobabouy01 says:

For the love of God just make A deal !!!!

I just want to know if I should be overjoyed (Johan to Queens), indifferent (Johan to Boston) or sick to my stomach (Da’ Bronx) !

It’s like being stuck on a roller coaster that just won’t stop running !!

  15. bobabouy01 says:

    Something different …………….

According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Phillies and Pedro Feliz have agreed to a two-year deal.

  16. zen says:

the mets are awfully confident. almost as confident as i was about them winning the division and going to the playoffs last year. defended them all year.

fool me once shame on you. fool me twice shame on me.

  17. TieCobb44 says:

Can someone explain to me that even if the Yankes or the Red Sox ultimately give the prospects that the Twins want, doesn’t it mean squat, because Johan can say no to a trade to either of those teams? If what has been written about Santana wanting to come to the National league is true, can’t he just say to the Twins, I’ll only waive my no-trade clause if traded to the Mets? If the Twins tell Johan no way, he can then say, don’t even think about trading me during the season, because I won’t waive my no-trade clause. Then when all is said and done, the Twins will ultimately wind up with only two draft picks.

    • Crooked Numbers says:

Yes, Santana has the power to do that. The question is: will he or has he done it already?

If I was in his shoes and had a real preference about going to a particular team, I would do it.

If he did and the story got out, there goes the Twins’ bargaining power….POOF!

      • MM1 says:

The Twins lose no bargaining power whatsoever. Smith holds all the cards and Santana will waive his no trade to be on the East coast pending an acceptable contract. The major players already know close to what that is or they wouldn’t playing.

        Let’s put it into perspective:
Santana is looking a cash cow straight in the face by being traded. He will do anything in his power to help this trade along if it’s to a place where he wants to be. If he stomps his feet and demands a trade and Smith says nope – offers aren’t good enough so you’re pitching for us and hope to heck you don’t get hurt or your stats don’t go down. If he does or they do – bye bye cash cow. Why do you think he or his agent hasn’t demanded anything in public.

        • Crooked Numbers says:

Huh? A story comes out that Santana will only approve a deal to the Mets, and the Twins “lose no bargaining power whatsoever”.

The Mets would be left competing against 2 draft picks a year from now.

LOL, you must be smokin some good shit!!!

  18. fyffem says:

Why? Because I called him “Ese (friend/brother)?” STFU and stop trying to make an issue out of nothing! The N word is FAR worse…trust me, I know.
