Huh? A story comes out that Santana will only approve a deal to the Mets, and the Twins “lose no bargaining power whatsoever”.

The Mets would be left competing against 2 draft picks a year from now.

The Twins lose no bargaining power whatsoever. Smith holds all the cards and Santana will waive his no trade to be on the East coast pending an acceptable contract. The major players already know close to what that is or they wouldn’t playing.

Let’s put it into perspective:
Santana is looking a cash cow straight in the face by being traded. He will do anything in his power to help this trade along if it’s to a place where he wants to be. If he stomps his feet and demands a trade and Smith says nope – offers aren’t good enough so you’re pitching for us and hope to heck you don’t get hurt or your stats don’t go down. If he does or they do – bye bye cash cow. Why do you think he or his agent hasn’t demanded anything in public.

Yes, Santana has the power to do that. The question is: will he or has he done it already?

If I was in his shoes and had a real preference about going to a particular team, I would do it.

If he did and the story got out, there goes the Twins’ bargaining power….POOF!

Smith seems to be stubborn as a mule. He would rather postpone the inevitable instead of having to face criticism now for his mishandling of ‘Santana.

I don’t think he’s all that concerned about maybe getting a lesser package later on. Getting to use Santana for the coming season is a plus, after all. But one thing I don’t think he’s factoring into the equation is the possibility that Santana has only gotten more irritated by how he’s handed things and kept him in the dark. If Santana is not happy during the 2008 season, I don’t know if that’s good for their club. And I don’t think there is any way he signs an extension with the Twins now.

I think they do. I am sure both Bosox and Yankees are willing to offer near the Twins demands.

However neither want to get into an auction. They know that if Santana landed with the opposition it will be a PR disaster for the other. Hence the stalemate. The famous prisoners dilemma.

That stalemate is the only Mets advantage. And it gets bigger the longer the saga continues.

Can someone explain to me that even if the Yankes or the Red Sox ultimately give the prospects that the Twins want, doesn’t it mean squat, because Johan can say no to a trade to either of those teams? If what has been written about Santana wanting to come to the National league is true, can’t he just say to the Twins, I’ll only waive my no-trade clause if traded to the Mets? If the Twins tell Johan no way, he can then say, don’t even think about trading me during the season, because I won’t waive my no-trade clause. Then when all is said and done, the Twins will ultimately wind up with only two draft picks.
