about a 20hr 80rbi avg for the last 3 years in san fran means at least 28hr 95hr at cbp

phils making some nice moves all off-season to defend their 1st place crown. braves addressed a main need in terms of the rotation adding glavine who was also a blow to the mets

going to be very tough to make the playoff this year

    • gowrightgo says:

Sounds like they just signed the RYAN CHURCH of third basemen. Much ado about nothing here

  2. MacD81 says:

Solid signing for the Phils. Hopefully we can acquire a certain pitcher to shut down their big lefties.

  3. spadanko says:

What nice moves have the Phillies made? feliz and Lidge? Lidge is a head case, and Feliz can hit 25 HRs, but he’ll also hit .250. Don’t overreact to this small move

    • MacD81 says:

Feliz will have high OBP guys in front of him, so those homers will drive runs in.

Lidge has shown that he can be a good closer. The change of scenery may do him well, may not. But the move allows them to put Meyers back in the rotation, which I think helps them.

Outside of April, the Phils played just as well — if not better than — the Mets last season. If the Mets can be considered playoff calibur, so must the Phils.

      • FBones24 says:

Change of scenery to Citizens Bank will not do Lidge well at all.

      • BigHangWithEm says:

Lidge showed he can be a good closer …. in 2005!!

he’s been pretty awful since. And like FBones said, you don’t GO to Philly for a change of scenery, you LEAVE philly for a change! When Lidge blows 3 home saves before early May and the death threats begin to pile up from the crazed phillie fans we’ll see how good Lidge is. Remember this is a guy that couldn’t handle the mental pressure of closing in HOUSTON!! how is he going to handle philly??

The Phillies will dwarf the NL with off. stats, but their poor pitching will catch up to them and they will win no more than 84 games, good enough for 2nd behind the Mets.

Where are the Braves in all of this you might ask??

Hmmm… Glavine is d-u-n DUN!! We all saw it, he’s toast.
Hampton, well the last time he pitched was the last time Brad Lidge was getting saves regularly. He’ll be back on the DL by June
Hudson? Good April last year and he was pretty stinky the rest of the year.
Smoltz, well this is the bedrock of their rotation, aging bedrock, but bedrock. If he misses more than 10 starts, trouble time in hotlanta.

  4. Philnym31 says:

I don’t see how adding the likes of Pedro Feliz and Geoff Jenkins to an already strikeout prone lineup constitutes a “great” offseason.

    • cgpublic says:

Great, no. Solid, yes. Superior to the Mets off-season. Absolutely.

      • 1-18-31-7 says:

        absolutely?

how about the loss of aaron rowand?

        • extrawhitemeat says:

They’re still going to score a ton of runs…

Lidge and Myers back in the rotation to team with Hammels could be scary..

Plus man do they have all the confidence in the world…

That being said no one is saying they are miles ahead of us, or even ahead at all.. but their off season has certainly been more productive then ours..

        • metsrule7 says:

Myers has to show that he can be dominant and stay healthy throwing 6-7 innings again and Lidge has to prove that he can pitch in CBP without giving up the monster homerun. If Lidge can be dominant again than he can lose alot of games that Myers pitches negating his starts. And if Lidge struggles who’s going to close, Gordon? Losing Rowand will hurt the phils on defense and offense. He seemed to be the one that got that offense going by hitting for avg where Howard was HR or nothing. If Howard goes back to hitting behind Utley than Utley will see less pitches since most teams would rather take a chance on getting Howard to strike out then face Utley.

  5. Charlie says:

I’m shocked that no one has mentioned that Feliz is one of the best defensive third basemen in the game.

  6. NickA33 says:

Not a bad sign by the Phils, I must admit. Feliz can back up Helms at 3rd but also play SS, 2B and OF. So all in all, he’s a great utility person to have coming off the bench for a day off or injury.

They’ve had a pretty darn good offseason, you have to admit. They’ve done nothing to “hurt” their team and made minor improvements that could have huge payoffs, i.e. Lidge. Low Risk/High Reward type signings.

God, I hope we get Santana, that will negate any offseason moves by the Phils and Braves.

    • ravi3 says:

Lidge is high risk/high reward…their bullpen is questionable as it is..if Lidge falters, then they are in big trouble…plus, if that happens, do you move Myers back into the closers spot, thus severly weaken your rotation? Or do you go with other options, like Alfonseca, who dont exactly inspire confidence?

    • hot stove chef says:

I’m guessing Feliz will be starting ahead of Helms, no?

    • dave27 says:

Lidge was not a signing, he was a trade for very promising OF Michael Bourne (who they might like back with Rowand gone) and the very reliable Geoff Geary.

  7. dcmetsfan says:

Pedro Feliz is a terrible offensive player. Sure, he’s got pop, but he is an out machine. His career on-base percentage is .288. That’s horrendous. That’s beyond horrendous, actually. So he’ll pop his 25 homers in Philly, and that’s about the entrirety of his contribution.

    Good glove though.

  8. jamie says:

I don’t see how this is any tremendous upgrade. So he’ll hit some homers and play good defense. They didn’t sign Chipper Jones, they signed Pedro Feliz. Meh.

  9. chicowalkersucksballs says:

    Excellent news!

As a Mets fan that has lived in San Francisco for the past eight years and watched countless Giants games in that span, let me state, quite emphatically:

Feliz WILL NOT make the Phillies better, he is a seriously flawed player and is highly mediocre overall.

    Furthermore:

He will kill you by swinging at curveballs off the plate and in the dirt, and/or hitting harmless groundballs off said curveballs, usually with men on base. I have witnessed more three pitch strikeouts and rally-killing doubleplays to last a lifetime, courtesy of Feliz.

That being said, if a team is stupid enough to throw him fastballs, especially slightly up or inside, look out…but this is the ONLY PITCH he can do anything with. There should never be any reason to ever throw this guy a fastball.

Additionally, his defense is gold glove worthy, and he should have won last year, to be honest. The guy is incredible to watch on the defensive side of things, great arm, good range.

So, if you desire a guy who will give you a sub .290 OBP, hit between .250 and .260 with around 20 homeruns and kill countless big innings with crappy ABs while playing incredible defense, this is the guy.

    • gowrightgo says:

I said it was the Ryan Church type of signing above. But after your analysis here…I’d say I was too generous with him. Sounds like Feliz is no better than a Jose Hernandez type. Good luck Phils.

      Mets are still better.

      • chicowalkersucksballs says:

Agreed, I like Church much better than anything Feliz will give you…Church actually will provide consistent quality ABs on a regular basis.

    • cgpublic says:

You can spin all you want, he’s a big upgrade defensively and may even find his plate discipline in the Phil’s lineup as opposed to a terrible Giant’s lineup last year.

  10. Slob says:

Thank you Philly. Lifetime .288 OBP.

  11. Cheese says:

The rich get richer and don’t have to give up 5 players to get a significant upgrade at 3rd.

    • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

You know what’s kinda sad? Our resident Phillie-troller Cheese speaks the truth: a sub-.290 lifetime OBP and sub-.430 slugging percentage… and he IS a massive improvement at 3B for them.

Good luck with all that, Comrade… and with the creative naming for Lidge once he blows 3 April saves.

  12. He stinks.

Thats all i need to say

  13. Talvenada says:

    1. He’s an excellent defensive 3B, which PHL didn’t have last yr.
    2. That lack of D shortened their bench almost every game.
    3. He batted 5th in SF, but 7th in PHL.
    4. Lidge was under more pressure in HOU w/ a low yield off.
    5. In HOU it meant pitching almost every night.
    6. Victorino is a better CF than Rowand on D.
    7. Feliz and Jenkins will both hit as many bombs as Rowand did last year.

    (comments below this will fester)

  14. Phillies sign Pedro Feliz, so they win the NL East?

    I’m tired.
