Ouch: Lo Duca to Have Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2008 at 10:33 am

According to the Associated Press, Nationals C Paul Lo Duca will have surgery on his left knee today to repair a minor meniscus tear.

Lo Duca will need roughly three to six weeks for a full recovery.

jeez, glad i didn’t have the wheel – as i preferred that the Mets re-sign lo duca…had the Mets re-signed him, which was clearly never an option, they would have had to answer a ton of questions about the Mitchell Report, plus potentially be without a starting catcher come opening day…ouch…

News: Citi Field will be Bright and Loud

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2008 at 9:55 am

Daktronics will provide nearly 12,000 square feet of integrated scoring and video display technology at Citi Field.

According to a press release…

“The scope of Daktronics’ work at Citi Field includes the design, manufacture, and installation of the most advanced and varied video technology and integrated systems in the country.  This system will incorporate multiple high definition video boards, one of the nation’s largest and most capable out-of-town scoreboards, large screen LED video displays, Daktronics’ popular ProAd® LED fascia display technology, and numerous other displays throughout the new, world-class facility…With more than 1200 lines of resolution, the primary LED video display will show images and information in unprecedented, high definition clarity.”

…this sounds exciting, and i’m sure i’ll enjoy it, but i already find Shea Stadium to be way too loud and musical…on the other hand, by writing that, i now feel like i’m 90 years old…

…in other news, hot dogs, beer and soda will still cost more money than an average family should ever be paying, assuming they can afford a ticket to get inside the building

Buzz: Mets to Wait on Livan, Lohse, etc

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2008 at 7:39 am

According to the Daily News and Newsday, the Mets are not likely to sign free-agent RHP Livan Hernandez, ‘or any other pitcher,’ until they become ‘convinced’ that a deal for Johan Santana will not happen.

…so, it’s trade for santana or sign hernandez or Kyle Lohse, i guesswhich would suggest that Orlando Hernandez will be in the starting rotation, either way

On Friday, the Rocky Mountain News wrote that the Mets are ‘close to a deal’ with Hernandez.

By the way, according to MLB.com, free-agent Bartolo Colon showed little interest in an incentive-laden deal from the White Sox.

…if colon is holding out for a guaranteed contract, and roster spot, at roughly $8 million per year, i’ll pass…

Buzz: Twins Need to Get Off the Pot

by Matthew Cerrone on January 28th, 2008 at 6:54 am

Today, in the Star-Tribune, La Velle E. Neal III reports that the Twins may soon contact the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets to say it’s time for them to each ‘step up’ with their best offers.

On Saturday, the Pioneer-Press wrote that the Twins are expected to trade Santana within 10 days.

The Twins still want Phil Hughes from the Yankees, who continue to make him unavailable, writes Neal, adding…

“The Twins would like for the Mets to add outfield prospect Fernando Martinez to a package that includes outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Delios Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber. The Mets, who need Santana the most, have been reluctant to add Martinez to the deal, and other possible add-ons – such as pitcher Aaron Heilman and outfielder Ryan Church – have been mentioned.”

…assuming neal’s report is current and correct, then we’ve been over this before: why part with martinez, if the Twins are dissatisfied with boston’s offer and hughes is still off the table…i mean, if the Mets are viewed as the front-runner, without martinez in the deal, why include martinez

…the thing is, my sense is that even if the Mets include martinez, right now, the deal still will not get done – because minnesota’s mark continues to be hughes, and it appears they’ll wait forever to try and smoke him out

According to Joel Sherman in Sunday’s New York Post, “The Mets fear their front-runner status is being floated by the Twins as a way to provoke the Yanks back into more serious discussions, which in turn would re-energize the Red Sox.”

i.e., again, like last week and the week before, the Mets are wisely standing firm – so long as the Yankees and Red Sox remain passive…if the Yankees and Red Sox turn up the heat, the Mets will hopefully up the ante…otherwise, why should they – especially if santana eventually decides to put a bit of pressure on the Twins to make a deal…
