Buzz: Mets to Meet Santana’s Agent on Wed.
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 29, 2008 6:06 pm

…from what i can gather, the Mets will meet with Johan Santana’s agents tomorrow to officially discuss a contract extension

…well, i’d certainly hope so…

…the clock is ticking

According to a recent report by Jon Heyman at SI.com, citing ‘people familiar with the Mets thinking,’ they’d like to keep the deal to a five-year contract, though Santana is believed to be seeking six or seven years.

However, Heyman adds, “There appears to be optimism that something can be done.”

Earlier this month, citing ‘a person with knowledge of the negotiations,’ the Star-Tribune wrote that Fred Wilpon is willing to meet Santana’s contract demands.

…as i wrote before, my sense is that it will not be very difficult to reach a contract extension within the 72 hours…although, one person connected to the team says it is far from a slam dunk…that said, a) as i had been saying for quite a while, santana prefers to pitch for the Mets, and b) i just can’t believe that the Mets would have pulled the trigger on this trade if they didn’t think they could do what is necessary to keep santana in queens…

Amazing how one player can change the ENTIRE dynamic of the team. When you have Maine and Perez as your 3/4 starters, MAN, that’s saying something.

    • Not to toot my own horn but check out my comment from MLK Day Jan 21st

My personal opinion is that a deal will be done sometime between Thursday (24th) and Tuesday (29th)… My reasoning? Superbowl coverage is heavy now and will continue to be for a few days… then, it will slow down a bit as we must wait the 2 weeks before the bowl. It won’t pick up again until about half way through next week.
This time frame is a perfect opportunity for The Mets, The Twins and MLB to make some headlines right smack in the middle of the NFL’s spotlight!!
Makes perfect marketing sense as after the Giants win the big game, all sports media will start focusing on MLB. What better way to grab attention than to trade one of the biggest names in the sport!

      NOT BAD HUH?

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

i remember that comment. It was a reply to those who thought they would wait until after the SB.

  2. Jersey Shore Mets says:

    Get it done!

  3. HOFMets57 says:

You’ve been right all along, Matt.

As tumultuous and gut-wrenching this whole ordeal turned out to be your insight and reporting made it all worth it. Thanks for taking all of us along for the ride!

  4. JohnMilner says:

Y’know, considering that Barry Zito wound up getting 7 years and $126 Mil from the Giants, $20 Mil/year for Santana, even for 7 years, looks good. Of course, it’s not my money…

  5. darkstar73 says:

unbelievable trade, not giving up Fmart and Pelfrey, just amazing. Give Santana whatever he wants, 6 additional years on top of this next year for whatever, doesn’t matter at this point, we kept what we wanted to keep. I really can’t believe it.

    • gowrightgo says:

I have to say that Fmart and Pelfrey to me seem like the best of the bunch. Mulvey may be more polished and aggressive and mentally strong pitcher in the group but his talent is seen as topping out at a 3. Humber is pretty good but seen more as a ml 4. Gomez can either be Hanley Ramirez or he can be another Michael Bourne…mostly speed and defense with a little pop. Guerra though…he seems to be the real gem in the group. He has been talked about as a true ace on the come.

I actually hope both Gomez and Guerra fulfill their potential. When you rape a team in a trade…they tend to stay away from you for further trades…see us with Tampa and Baltimore with us.

Anyone think the mets have a short term fire sale for prospects with El Duque?

  6. BBmetsfreak36 says:

this is amazing pelfrey had been my favorite all along and i honestly think he can be the next brandon webb w/ that excellent sinker aslong as he can harnass it. Martinez is a long time in the future but hes going to be a great player. fair deal. i like gomez but other than hes speed i hate to say it but hes alittle overated. coco chrisp had alot of hype but ended up being a good addition for any team but kinda eh :: shrugs shoulders::.

  7. Nails says:

Did you guys hear Gammons claim that NONE of the four prospects would be in the TOP TEN of the Red Sox or Yankees prospects?

Please, Gammons … pull your head out of your ass.

    • darkstar73 says:

did he say that? that’s incredibly ridiculous, that sensationalism at its best

      • Nails says:

Yeah – it was on espn’s site on video.

        • gowrightgo says:

he really is just trying to justify his entire offseasons worth of comments about the weakness of the mets system and the obvious better systems and greater likelihood that Boston and Yankers had. In the end..they both said they cant afford it or it is too big a luxury to do. We read it right all along. It was us bidding against us or the concept of 2 picks when santana walked..

Omar had a lousy hand…a pair of 2’s and just won the big pot by making all the others at table think they were holding sh-t.

Omar..stay away from my saturday night poker game

      Thanks for the link!

David, please never use the word “shot” when speaking about baseball again. hahaha

  9. thejuggernaut says:

give him the keys to the city.

  10. metballnut says:

Well, Omar did it! He was Bill Smith’s bus driver….took him to school.
Any Mets fan who doesn’t like this trade is a LOSER.
I could care less how much we pay Santana…the Mets already raised the prices.
The mets get 20 million a year from Citibank…and spend it WELL!
Meanwhile, the phillies sign Pedro feliz for 6.5 million and they are happy?
THIS IS THE WINTER OF 1999 ALL OVER AGAIN…WE TRADE DOTEL FOR HAMPTON AND HAMPTON TAKES THIS TEAM TO THE WORLD SERIES.
THE DIFFERENCE IS – WE GET TO SIGN SANTANA! HE LIKES THE NY SCHOOL SYSTEMS :)

  11. metballnut says:

Gammons is just jealous…he is a Boston Homer and wants the sox to get him.

That being said, we traded out #2 (Gomez) #3 (Geirra), #4 (Mulvey) and Number 7 prospect (Humber)s from our team for the best pitcher in baseball.

We got to keep Pelfrey and FMART!

This will go down as the best deal Omar ever made!

  12. AppleInTheHat says:

You got to love Steve Summers! I guess he understands a bit more about the New York sports scene then a few blowhards in the afternoon that will go nameless. I hope the Mets have a news conference right in the middle of their Friday show.

    • MudvilleNine says:

I watched them announce it on YES. You should have seen the puss on fat Mikes face. He looked so aggravated that the Mets got him. Reporting it like he was disgusted by the whole thing. It was priceless.

  13. Metsgirl23 says:

Big congrats to Omar for making this deal I knew he could do it! And Fred Wilpon is willing to pay whatever meet Santanas contract needs! This should answer the question for those people who kept asking is Wilpon willing to pay for Johan and I figured he would! And its been said on ESPN that we got the better deal than the Twins did !

  14. AppleInTheHat says:

After listening to Steve Summers for two minutes and M&MD for two hours, Summers has talked about the trade more. I hope the Mets hold a news conference announcing the signing during the middle of the their afternoon drive time shift on Friday.

  15. metsstem says:

    Thank You Omar Minaya!
Our number 4 pitcher won 15 games last year! For the first time since the late eighties, the greatest baseball team in the history of the world to root for again has a rotation that could lead the league in strikeouts!!! Let’s stay healthy and focused and ….. LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS!

  16. There were doubters and people calling for his head, but omar by god got things done. January 29 should be remembered as Omar Minya (I don’t even care how his name is spelled) day

  17. dwrightstuff5 says:

as Teddy KGB once said: “PAY THAT MAN HIS MONEYYYY”

  18. rosemarymets says:

just do the physical, etc and get him signed puleeeeeez………..

  19. Ametfan says:

If he had went to the Stankees, Mike would be talking about it so much you would not even know that the Giants were in the Superbowl. Great trade. I am a HUGE Giants fan, but basball and the Mets are my first love. This makes up for last season, which I for one was still pissed about.

  20. The Captain says:

I have to admit the signs were there, Mets started this off season with trades, no big free agent signings which is not how a high power ball club plays the off season, Omar said last year no Zito cause were saving the money for Santana, the Mets only had 4 legit starters in place, but I was still waiting for the Dodgers or Angels to jump in the mix, and when Gomez got instructions to stop playing, I knew it was done, just so surprised the leauge allowed us to get Santana for a small list of prospects. Smith had to run this trade around the leauge before he pulled the trigger. Just so happy right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Mets baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. gowrightgo says:

The millledge for Schneider and Church deal seems better now after having got Santana doesn’t it? I mean in the end…we upgraded the production from RF and got a terrific defensive catcher and RF to go with our shiny new ace.

Millz…..who I will alway want to be a MET…I think he will be great long term….would not produce what we will get out of the 7 hole in Church this year.

What a terrific offseason. What was once a D grade by most is now a definitive A

    Improved the offense a little
    Improved the defense alot
    Improved the starting pitching alot
Improved the pen some by subtracting Mota and Sele and adding Wise and Register

My prediction…97 wins and a division title plus a WS appearance against the Tigers
