Buzz: Santana Rejected Five-Year Twins Offer
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 29, 2008 1:34 pm

According to WFAN’s Mike Francesa, citing ‘the word,’ Johan Santana recently turned down a five-year, $100 million contract offer from the Twins, because he is still holding out for a seven-year, $140 million deal.

Francesa also added the following gem…

“This means the Mets are front and center…

“I still think the Mets are gonna get him, I’ve said that a couple times during the last couple of weeks. Now it looks like it’s moving in that direction.”

…this from the man who has essentially mocked the Mets at every step of the way, suggesting they have no chance to get santana unless they trade Jose Reyes, knowing full well that reyes is going no place…now, all of sudden, he claims to have favored the Mets…does he even listen to what he says…god knows i do, and i hate myself because of it…

…at any rate, as i said earlier today, i believe santana and his agents may have made a request to get this process moving, but i don’t feel it was anything formal or threatening…well, rejecting a five-year, $100 million offer is a pretty clear message i would say…

He’s not going anywhere!?!?! The Mets, Yank, Sox will not give hime 7 years…. He will take this to the FA Market

    • The Glider says:

      You may be right.

Though I think Santana rejected the $100 not because it was “only” $100 mill., but because he probably knows that the Twins don’t have the financial resources to sign him to that money and still go out and get other big time free agents.

      Just a thought.

      • EncinoMets says:

        I thought the same thing.
He knows the Twins will be saddled with his contract (a la the Rangers with Arod) and not be able to add to the team in the future to be competitive or be forced to trade him later.

    • bluNoway2go says:

OH MY GOD! this Santana Mellow drama is like binge drinking getting tremendously worse, I just want this thing to be over with already so I can go on with the rest of my life. I haven’t done a weeks’ of school work because of this whole fiasco.

  2. YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. zen says:

that’s francesa’s mo. completely wrong about a sports issue or rumor then suddenly he knew it all along. in fact, he broke the story when “someone” told him in a phone call.

mike hearts snacks and diet coke.

    • GuruMets says:

100% agree. He pulls this crap all the time. Weeks of no, no, no, but then someone else says it and Fatman goes “I knew it all the time!”
If M & MD hadn’t been on the air for so long, I would say there is no reason to listen to them. ESPN radio = commercial tuning crap.

I just wish they would shorten the M & MD show, listening to same pompousness for 5 hours a day is annoying. I usually listen to them for the 1st couple of minutes to hear if anything is new, then I change it. I can smell the Doritios on Francesca’s breath through my speakers…

  4. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Now does the fact he refused $100 mil make it more likely he will be traded instead of being held on to?

I keep waiting for Smith to call a Press Conference and announce that Johan will start the year with the club….ugh..

  5. kowalski69 says:

when i skimmed “santana” and “rejected” in the headline my jaw dropped and heart skipped a beat

  7. Joe Bacci says:

    Francesa is an ass.

  8. dancran says:

I know none of you will believe me but this is waht I posted on the other post

My friend works for santana’s agent in that office and he just texted me “santana to mets..dont know details yet”

i highly doubt he’s messing around. I think we got him. I’m not making this up to be a dick

  9. Tidewater says:

    Mike:

    “Me me, I, I , I, I, I. Me me me me me. I. Me. I, I, I.”

    Mad Dog:

    “Gwbhuhlhuhs. Duuhhfswwah. Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!”

  10. SamInNorthCakalakey says:

Seriously, why do you quote that schmuck. He and fat boy are an embarrassment to the NY media. Make their statements of “fact” based on nothing but what they feel is right or want. Jokes!

  11. cyclone says:

Ha! Fatcessa has been saying the Mets were going to get him all along? Are you kidding me? Everything I have read when it comes to Fatassa’s take is that the Mets weren’t even in the running? Why do people even listen to this Yankee shill jackass? Matt, don’t hate yourself for listening, just shoot your damn radio…

  12. GravediggerHebner says:

Matt Cerrone, all this talk about “kill me” or “smash my head into my laptop” or “I hate myself.” Dude, get a massage or something.

  14. freshnewsound says:

you guys have got to try a starbucks casi cielo coffee…that is the best coffee i’ve ever tasted…i just downed a venti and shaking with excitement (or is that the caffeine)

  15. dancran says:

i’m a mets fan like all of you..why would I make it up? I’m not just making up some random rumor. He works in Peter Greenberg’s office. He texted me and said “santana to mets.” He says he isn’t messing around.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

it’s just that we don’t know you from a name on a screen, that’s all. If you’re telling the truth you’re doing us a tremendous service and you’ve got a great scoop. If you’re lying you deserve to burn in hell after being drawn and quartered. That’s quite a range, but I hope you understand why. Plus, even if you are being completely truthful, your “friend” could be playing you. At the end of the day I hope you’re right but I also hope you’ll forgive me/us for healthy skepticism.

    • k-mets says:

How much do you trust your source. We seen way too many sources come up false. I don’t think us Mets fan don’t want our hopes dashed by false information. especially since anyone can post any news. Well back to Work!

  16. cmon_mets08 says:

I just want to come to the site tomorrow morning and see “NEW: Mets Acquired LHP Johan Santana” is that too much to ask?

  17. Peter says:

I heard more . . . deal to be announced by end of day today.

    Gomez, Humber, Mulvey and Guerra.

    Fire away!

(If my source is bad . . . I will NOT be happy)

  18. I think Mike and the angry puppy are better then the idiots at 1050. They always get the best sports figures on their show: Phil simms, parcells, torre, omar, willie.

    • cyclone says:

I think listening to jackhammers is better than Fat Mike and the Ass Dog…

      • GravediggerHebner says:

I prefer standing at the end of airport runways but I hear you…no wait I can’t hear anything

      • The Glider says:

You haven’t listened to the sports talk radio personalities, and I use that term loosely, here in Philadelphia.

        The FAN kicks their butts.

        • cyclone says:

Don’t need to…I choose with the “OFF” button on my radio….especially when it comes to Boss Hogg and Roscoe aka Fat Mike and the Ass Dog…

  19. mrmustseetv says:

    A few points:

    (1) Francesa is like that unpopular kid in school that tries to fit in by acting like he knows the “cool” kids. I love how he makes it seem like he and Omar are tight and talk all the time where in reality he probably gets his info from metsblog.com. :)

    (2) That said, if I were the Mets, i would hold on to Fernando Martinez. Not just because he’s the crown jewel of the farm system, but because if you empty out the farm system and someone else breaks down then who will you trade to get a replacement? You need some chips to trade for the inevitable need for help.

    (3) If I’m the Mets, i don’t give Santana a guaranteeed 7 year deal. Look at the history of pitchers that were given 5 year deals. With the exception of Mike Mussina, most of them did not pan out. I would offer 6 years with an attainable vesting option for the 7th year at most.

  20. pezao says:

Oh no! A van just pulled up outside my office, and a bunch of guys in white coats with a straight jacket in their hands just got out. I think I’m getting hauled away……

  21. metsdude13 says:

Is this guy really so stupid that he thinks that no one remembers what he says? He has stated repeatedly over the past month the Mets will not get Santana without Reyes. The Mets were never trading Reyes. Thus, according to him, the Mets were never getting Reyers.

    What a fool.

  22. Metro41 says:

Mets hire Santana to play during Latin night.
    ……………………….
Famed rock guitarist Carlos Santana will play after the June….

  23. It’s a METSPOLOSION of Santana news!

  24. ghobot says:

i dont know who made the commentary for this post, but francesca has not mocked the mets at any point in this process and had only expressed comments he heard from omar himself. so its really disingenuous to paint francesca as someone who didnt believe the mets were going to get santana.

    • metsdude13 says:

Well then is also really disingenuous for him to paint himself as someone who beleived the Mets would get Santana, being as he NEVER SAID THAT.

    • bobabouy01 says:

      Right Mikey…..whatever you say !

      • dego says:

ghobot.. You obviously don’t listen to Mike and the dog too much.. I recall on several occasions hearing him and the dog blast the Mets prospects and make fun of the fact that we were part of the rumors for Johan as Matt has alluded to.

        • ghobot says:

i listen to them EVERY DAY. and yes they blasted the mets prospects just like everyone was blasting the mets prospects, but to say that he said that the mets dont have a chance is not true. they were interpretting the strong notions in the press that the mets didnt have a chance. they have admitted many times that they are not scouts and have no idea who these players are, and that they are evaluating the mets chances based on the medias take on it. man i hate defending these guys, because they dont need it, but if you are going to blast them, at least do it for stuff they actually did.

        • cyclone says:

You must be their press guy….

        • ghobot says:

no i am just not a mike and the maddog hater. and i find it hilarious how silly you guys get over dudes who talk trash on the mets when their real problem is being two ignorant rich white dudes. but there are enough rich ignorant white dudes that listen to them and seemingly ignore that plenty of ignorant stuff they say daily. making fun of the mets to rile you guys up is the LEAST of what they do.

        • ghobot says:

how hard is this to get. people see and hear what they want to hear and what offends them. thats all i am saying. those two offend me on an entirely different level that most people who are mets fans dont even realize because they are just like them. i am saying that those two deserved to be bashed on so many levels other than razzing met fans.

    • MDMetfan says:

      Is that you Mike???

    • zen says:

are you kiddings? francesa has said numerous times that the mets have NO chance at santana. the ony chance would be to include reyes or wright.

laughing that the mets have no prospects

      • ghobot says:

you hear what you want to hear, but that is NOT what he has said. he has said that omar told him that the twins have not moved from their reyes position because they coveted major league ready talent. and if you ANYONE here thought the mets were the frontrunners two months ago, great, you are preskin. fact of the matter is the only reason we are is because we can pay for santana and because the sox and yanks are content that he doesnt land with their rivals.

the mets prospects have not improved.

        • zen says:

considering you’re the only one who heard that version including the person who posted the actual blog (matt): it’s a lot more likely your wrong.

        • ghobot says:

or more likely that certain mets fans are convinced that whatever comes out of certain peoples mouths is going to be colored as anti met bias. like i said, i dont even like defending them, because they always act like jerks toward the mets, but at least bash them for what they actually did.

mike and the maddog have said nothing worse than what the fans have expressed here many times. thats all im saying.

        • cyclone says:

Wait a minute…aren’t you the guy who kept saying “The Mets will win the 2007 World Series?”

          NEXT….

        • zen says:

it’s one of the better sports talk shows (in a pathetic field). they slam the mets regularly for two reasons:

          1. they get extra salary from the yes network who love them to take digs at the mets

          2. the mets public relations/business operations people, specifically david howard, complain to the wfan executives when mike/dog speak badly about the mets and the paris wilpon.

bottomline: mike said mets had no prospects (laughing) and could only get santana with reyes or wright. he may be right in the end, but he can’t take credit for knowing they’d get him with just prospects

        • ghobot says:

but my point is EVERYONE said that the mets get no prospects. even people on this board! and the mets STILL have no prospects but are on the short list of teams that can actually pay santanas price tag.

and yes i am the dude that said that, what does that have to do with saying that cerrone and other people need to get over being so sensitive on what mike and the maddog say?

  25. Mitch45 says:

No one should take anything that fat turd says seriously. Francesa has been dead wrong about things before and will be again. The guy is a big windbag.

  26. Metro41 says:

Mike has said that the only way the Twins would make a deal is if Reyes was included. He said he’s talked to Omar and that Omar has said that Reyes is off the table. Mike never said the Mets weren’t “in it” but has held (until now) to his belief that the Mets weren’t the front runners.

Mad Dog has consistently said that he didn’t think Wilpon would spend the money and for that reason he didn’t think the Mets were really “in it.”

Neither has really looked at this through Santana’s point of view (e.g. I have a no trade and can dictate which team I play for)

    • ghobot says:

i am beginning to think mets fans are going to hear what they want to hear when those two open their mouths.

      • cyclone says:

For somebody who doesn’t like defending them, you sure do it a lot. Let it go.

        • ghobot says:

i sure do defend them a lot because they are good radio and i feel for the most part they provide good debate. ANDi like them. they are entertaining. it doesnt mean they are above ridicule, but it would be nice if they were ridiculed for actually doing something stupid , which happens constantly when it comes to dog.

i mean right now maddog is saying that santana is bothered going to the mets because its the mets and its a national league team. and thats complete idiocy.

  27. morningsider says:

    not getting my hopes up…

  28. dwrightstuff5 says:

is that guy serious about the mets getting Santana for that !!? if they get him for the package…mulvey, guerra, humber anf gomez…wow
if thats true .. just wow

  29. dykstraw says:

    i’m starting to get queasy

  30. bobabouy01 says:

I don’t think I was this anxious waiting for my first kid to be born !!

  31. Rickey just got off the phone with Johan Santana’s agent’s hairdresser and here’s what Rickey has learned:

Johan Santana will be playing in the Atlantic Baseball League with Rickey on the Newark Bears.

  32. MetFanInDC says:

Who is interested in an Old School-like capture of Johan? We take him, we win no matter what.

  33. Golden Ratio says:

I have now reached the point that my F5 key is coming loose.

    Is this really happening???

  34. GravediggerHebner says:

completely unrelated but the Giants just showed up for their media day session 5 minutes early. At least they’re consistent.

  35. cbusmetsfan says:

Any schmoe can post bogus news on this board that his friends knows so and so or works for so and so. I remember some knucklhead posting a bogus Mitchell report list on this board that people took as fact. I won’t believe anything until ESPN or some news service breaks the news, not some guy sitting in his underwear behind a keyboard looking for a way to get us all excited.

  36. dancran says:

I would react the same way as you. What I am saying though isn’t made up, i’m not trying to be a dick or an idiot. This is what he told me. He does seriously work in that office so if anyone was a good source, it would be him. I don’t blame you for not believing me but why would I make this crap up? I’m a mets fan like all of you.

    • ArmandoBleepingBenitez says:

Its ok dude. I am sure you will be banned if it is not true.

    • Pedro says:

      ok…
To validate urself, Why don’t you give us some detail..ANY detail about the deal ie Whos going in the trade, how many yr. extension, etc…If u have a source, he has to know SOMETHING
You can gain a lot of credibility here

  37. shea_guevara says:

Two weeks ago, a caller to Francesa’s show asked what he thought the Mets’ chances for getting Santana were. His response: “Ten percent. Fifteen, tops.”

I distinctly remember because I was in the car, looking for a parking spot, so I could take my baby daughter to the doctor.

Francesa’s free to change his mind. But don’t try to snow us all and say you’ve been saying this for “weeks”, because it’s a bald faced lie.

  38. eman316 says:

If you really believe that after 3+ months of debate the Twins decided to deal Johan Santana for just Gomez, Mulvey, Guerra and Humber, then I have some swampland in Phoenix I would like to sell you!

No Heilman, No Church, No Pelfrey, No Fernando Martinez?

    • metzor says:

Agreed. One semi-stud who isn’t 100% ml ready, and 3 prospects who will top out as #3 starters if they’re lucky? No way they do this. Maybe if you add church or heilman, or both.

      • Peter says:

        Well . . . Guerra does have a Santana-like ceiling from what I understand.

And Gomez will be able to start in center for years, power will come as he grows into his frame.

Mulvey and Humber are hyped as being able to contribute this year.

So, two arms (even if they are #3s), and CF and leadoff hitter for long term and a potential stud pitcher with a Liriano/Santana ceiling.

Not a bad haul . . . for one year! We still have to sign the extension.

  39. Yvaithe says:

Agreed until it’s official, I won’t buy what any random person says comes from the assistant to the GM.

  40. FBones24 says:

I was listening to him yesterday on my way to school after work and he said that he spoke to Omar when Omar was in Israel and that the Twins had “not come off Reyes.” He then went on to say that he’s been saying it all along that he thinks Santana will end up on the Mets.

I’ll be honest, I kinda like their show as they are entertaining, but come on?????? How could he say that. He has been killing the Mets on this from the beginning. What kills me is that he has the nerve to say “I spoke to Omar and Omar said…” Could that possibly be true????

    • FBones24 says:

…especially after we know for weeks that the Mets would not include Reyes in any deal, and most likely so have the Twins.

    • ghobot says:

i was listening to the EXACT same broadcast and he didnt say he thought that was going to be the result ALL ALONG. he said that it looks like the mets have a very good chance to land him if other teams dont step it up.

and he has always said that the mets have about a 1 out 10 chance of getting santana. those are his exact words. and honestly, that is a better chance than most people on here gave us. any more than that, and you would be delusional. as prospects go, lester and hughes are A and the mets dont have a developed A in the bunch. they all have potential, but they are too young to call them As. the mets prospects are not different. the spin is.

      • FBones24 says:

How do you explain what he said about “talking to Omar while he was in Israel.” Why the hell would Omar be talking to him while he’s in Israel, and if he did talk to him, why would he give him that kind of inside information? I find it hard to believe.

        • ghobot says:

yeah i thought he said upon his return from israel, because he made that comment about two days after omar was reported to have returned from his trip to israel.

its not hard to believe. mike and the maddog is the media and a perfect conduit to disseminate misinformation which omar does plenty of to aid in negotiation.

  41. Metro41 says:

Here is what matters – Santana holds all the cards.

    1. Santana has a no trade clause.
    2. Santana wants 7/140M

That limits the market to a few team that Santana wants to play for. If the Red Sox or Yankees make a trade then the deal costs them 7/140M, top prospects, and then a luxury tax. The Mets can offer Santana the most money, period.

The Twins must move him now. Suppose Santana sits out a large part of the season because of a hang nail. The Twins pay his salary, can’t trade him (no trade), and watch his value shrink to two draft picks. After the season, any team that signs Santana will have AN INCENTIVE to sign other FAs (Texiera?) because they will already be losing their #1 pick. Imagine if the Braves had a worse record than the Twins. The Twins would only get a sandwich pick and a #2 rounder.

He will be traded. The question is will anyone besides the Mets pay his asking price.

  42. boozermetsfan says:

can i get an e-mail update every time a new santana post appears on metsblog???

  43. iknowmets says:

ive been thinking about this johan santana deal and i think that he is not going to get traded. the twins will keep him for 2 months and check how mets redsox and yankees prospects play and they will see the upside that the mets have and then the twins will come back and offer ask if the offer is still available of carlos gomez kevin mulvey deolis guerra and phil humber and the mets will reject. i really want to keep all of the mets prospects but if a trade happens i cant do anything about it i really wanted to keep milledge thinking that he will get stronger and hit 30 homeruns for the mets in the near future like ryan howard when he was 22 he was not considered a 40 plus homerun hitter but then developed and hit 56 homeruns in 2006. and milledge has a nice glove i would have loved for the mets to keep him and he would have been playing right field for the mets and i would have kept johnny estrada and castro to share equal time or have the mets sign miguel olivo and have him say sorry for the fans for the incident with reyes and have reyes comment back that it is cool with him i would have liked that better than schneider and church. now with everything else i like the help in the bullpen with i that i believe that scott schoenweis will be better this year and with matt wise and duaner back to help and willie collazo will get better, carlos muniz will also pitch and amborix burgos will get up healthy and dominate and show us some more of his 100 mph fastball and the mets got steven register in the rule five draft a closer in the minors who is almost ready to go up in majors and jorge sosa canbe a long relief pitcher and also in the bullpen. and the mets will have philip humber back and healthy and proove that he is a first round draft pick and he will start in the bullpen then he will get some starts. aaron hielman will be decent and i dont trust in him alot. the mets also have adam bostick a lefty reliever who will get a shot at the majors. and the mets got a reliever from the devil rays named brian stokes i believe he can be a decent starter he has a nice curve ball and he just check how he pitches just that he needs to get more time to get it together but for now he is a reliever the mets are packed with relievers. now to starting pitcher we will have pedro martinez for a full year which will be a huge upgrade and john maine is showing he can be a starting pitcher for the mets for a long time and he will get to 200 innings this year and maybe even 200 strike outs he can just get better and better. oliver perez should get an extension of what dontrelle willis got maybe less but his agent is scott boras he is an awesome pitcher if he can control more and walk less batters he is a high strike out person if he can control more. i do not know why people are saying that orlando hernandez needs to be in the bullpen elduque does not need to be in the bullpen at all he could have won 15 games easily it is that when he pitches the mets dont bat at all he leaves in the 8th inning while the mets are tied zero to zero or 2 to 2 or 1 to one and he gets the no decision the mets won 16 of his 24 starts and 6 to no decisions. mike pelfrey and phil humber will pitch for the fifth rotation spot and maybe kevin mulvey can join by the allstar break.and maybe jason vargas can get it together and join the mets again. and the mets get to see deolis guerra in the majors in 2009 and gomez in left field and we will see what martinez can do.

    • professor met says:

iknowmets, this is the second day in a row where you contribute an obscenely long post in the comments section. I think i speak for the rest of the metsblog faithful when I say that the best posts are short, sweet, argumentative and most importantly witty. I’m getting my phd in the humanities I don’t even have the patience to read all that.

    • Charlie says:

      still no punctuation?

    • VCarver says:

I just think Johan has decided at this point that he wants to leave the Twins. It’s not so much the money as the organization at this point.

I think he’ll be a little more flexible when it comes time to negotiate with his new club. Not a lot. But a little.

And Francessa is an idiot. For the longest time he was guaranteeing that the Yankees would get Santana.

    • Alban says:

At a minimum, use paragraphs. Please. You seem really passionate about what you’re writing, otherwise you wouldn’t have written so much. But no one has the patience to read through all of that when it’s all a big jumble.

Paragraphs will at least help us skim the content of what you’re trying to say. Then maybe you’ll get a response that is related to your comment.

If the mets get him, who would post the news first: mets.com or metsblog.com?

        I hate comments like this

A person with firsthand knowledge of the club’s dealings with the Twins acknowledged Tuesday that the Mets have received a “best offer” request of the American League club, an indication perhaps that the Santana trade scenario has moved into its final stage.

just gets your hopes up that much more

    Francesa is a joke!

He has as much credibility as O.J.

As late as last night he was saying that the Twins won’t come off of Reyes.

Either Mike Francesa is THE personal confidant of both the Twins and the Mets’ General Managers — and they are telling him things that they tell to NO ONE else — or he is completely and utterly out of the loop.

But it’s always been this way with Francesa. He’s wrong about almost everything, but he’s so arrogant and sure of himself that he sells it. He’s made a decent career out of nothing. He talks a good game, but after listening to him since their show came on the air, I’ve consistently said that he thinks he knows more than he actually does.

    “dancran” and “peter” –
    where are you?
more to offer from “inside” or should we write you off as not serious?

  56. REVILO75 says:

You have to admit that the mets are only in the lead to get santana because both the yankees and redsox arent willing to give up there top prospects to get santana, if the yankees or redsox wanted santana, they have better prospects than the mets! if the mets get him, it’s by default!
