Buzz: This Could all be Offical by Tomorrow
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 29, 2008 7:04 pm

i get the sense, from people who would know, that this may all be wrapped up and done with by tomorrow, pending a physical…including the contract extension…

…which would be great…seriously, consider how long the actual trade took, the sooner a contract is worked out, and the sooner this all becomes official, the better

man, what a crazy two months

This is a great time to say…Wonderful work Matt. Your diligence is admirable, and you have gained a life long visitor of this site.

    Go Mets!!!

    • metsomniac says:

i agree. I remeber a couple of months back when no one else had the Mets on their radar as far as a Santana trade was concerned, but Matt said they were still in it. I remeber thinking he was doing it to just get traffic on the site… I am eating my words. Great job Matt. Your credibility is through the roof.

      • FBones24 says:

Everyone was saying that. I remember at the winter meetings when all of the major sports media outlets were saying we did not have the pieces to get this done, Matt was the only one who was consistent on this. I never criticized him for it, because even if it wasn’t true, I was happy with the dream. Today though, anyone who doubted Matt, his contacts, or his journalistic ability, owes him an apology. Excellent work Metsblog and excellent work Omar!

        • NHL says:

Give yourself a pat on the back, Matt. Great work. Keep it going, man! :)

        • metsdude13 says:

Seriously Matt, pretty much everything you said over the past two months turned out to be true. Incredible…

So…who’s your pick for the superbowl?

        • mets17 says:

Matt says the Giants. Hopefully all of us Jets fans are pulling for you guys.

        • magic00700magic says:

          S-A-N-T-A-N-A !-!-!-!-!

Oooh, I am as giddy like a school girl.

          LOL

          Woooo hooooo!!!!!!!

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

so honestly what are all the media talking heads going to say to cover their a$$ since all they did was bash our farm and our chances at santana.

        • TO YOU N00BS:

MATT DOES A GREAT JOB LIKE THIS EVERY YEAR AT THE TRADE DEADLINE.

Keep up the good work, Matt.

    • belboy01 says:

      I have to agree…first class all-the-way!

      Lets Go Mets!!!

      • extrawhitemeat says:

Agreed Matt… but will you hire me when I get fired from my job for checking metsblog all day????

        • gowrightgo says:

I want to hear from Santana. I want to hear that he is delighted to come to the NL and that he is ready to bring this team to the WS and that he has always wanted to be a met and that he can’t wait to pitch against the phillies and braves. I guess the appropriate thing is to wait until the money and years are worked out but I want to hear him talk

    • gipper913 says:

I will briefly stop dancing arounbd my aprtment in my Metsblog shirt and underwear singing ” Meet the Mets” at the top of my lungsin order to say ‘way to go Omar’.

The Mets front office played this beautifully. Nobody should play poker against Omar Minaya.

Oh, and Matt Cerrone was, by far the best, most balanced reporter about this whole process. He was far more prescient than so many “elite” baseball media folks and commentators.

Now bring back the X man.. XAVIER NADY and we can pack our bags for Port St. Lucie

    • UltiMetFan says:

From everyone expecting the mets to be 2nd or third in the east to being the favorites to win the national leaguefrom one guy. What a great job Omar minaya has done to turn the mets around since he got to new york.

    • solimani34 says:

I wonder what Billy Wags has to say about where we’re projected in the division now…

  2. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I can’t wait to hopefully see him have a potential match-up at The Ted between him and Smoltz on that first Sunday of April…

  3. SamInNorthCakalakey says:

Couldn’t get a word in before since I just stopped crying. Congrats guys and welcome to the big time.

  4. mrose says:

      • Metsgirl23 says:

Good luck on your test tomorrow! I am a college student as well but I would totally get wasted as well instead of study for a test tomorrow. This is big news for all us die hard Mets fans! Big thanks to Matt for posting it to us first on this blog and huge congrats to Omar for getting the job done only one step away and than we’ll really have him.

    • gowrightgo says:

I HAVE TO SAY IT…..WHERE IS MR MET41 or FIREMETSMANAGEMENT guy today? I mean of all days to totally disappear…his suggestions have been accepted. The team has bought the goods. Where the hell is the cheif freddy coupons commenter to take his lumps?

      • mr_met says:

so you are saying that i’m not enough. i’m mr met, dude. how much more glorious can a baseball team mascot get than me? huh?

  9. RichardK says:

We Finally Did It! Thank You Omar! Debt Payed! Lets Go Mets!

  10. bobabouy01 says:

Should this all get wrapped up tomorrow I will be expecting all the Omar & Wilpon haters to begin paying homage to the genius that is Minaya and thanking Mr. Wilpon for the investment in our next 6 or 7 seasons !!

  11. 276K says:

Hey, don’t know if anyone pointed this out yet…

    41 + 16 = 57

    Coincidence?

  12. bigchart333 says:

this is an amazing nite for me too…made a nice sale at work, mets got johan, and now a chick is comin over and im taping her givin me a beej!!! holla

  13. zen says:

    great job, omar.

    thanks to brian cashman too.

  14. bigchart333 says:

yes, i have been saying, SINCE NOVEMBER, that i agreed with Matt and that i was 100% convinced he was coming…and that Wilpon and Omar would get it done….and now it’s reality…all the haters MUST ADMIT that they were wrong and hop on the bandwagon now…

  15. SheaHeyKid24 says:

so where are all the omar bashers and freddie coupon losers? hiding no doubt.

  16. haplo says:

And here I was assuming Omar was going to have to have a coffee IV hooked up to him for the next three days.

  17. SheaHeyKid24 says:

where’s all the freddie coupons and omar bashing now? ye of little faith.

  18. haplo says:

I assumed Omar would have to be hooked up to a coffee IV for the next three days.

    Good work Mets.

  19. Steve.P says:

I’m so excited I’m gonna beat my wife!

  20. metsftw says:

yeah, where’s firemetmanagement, trumpzilla, et al.

and speaking of missing people, what happened to points guy?

  21. redrum15 says:

we should have a much higher confidence rating soon!

  22. SheaVendor says:

This is frigging awesome!! Matt, I have to say you have been incredible throughout all this. This is the best fan blog of any team in major sports. Great work!!

    LETS GO METS!!!!

  23. ugbmets21 says:

hey does anyone know if the twins can pull the trade back? just wondering because the pr is getting hit real hard everywhere…

    LETS GO METS!

    • pvhornet05 says:

They can’t take the trade back, and of course the pr is going to tak a hit, they had the chance to get Hughes, Ellsbury or Lester but their plan backfired.

  24. MrBotch says:

    from a phillies blog
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, January 29, 2008 04:56 PMWell, crap.

USA Today is reporting a four-for-one swap, as the Mets will send Phillip Humber, Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey and Deoils Guerra to the Mets for the All-World left-hander.

More on this to come, but a few knee-jerk quick thoughts:

    1. The Mets stole this one. They didn’t have to give up their No. 1 prospect.
    2. The Mets are suddenly the favorite to win both the East and the NL.
    3. We’re in trouble.

  25. zen says:

    minnesota star tribune:

“The Twins have agreed to trade two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana to the Mets in exchange for four of New York’s best prospects. Did the Twins get enough?”

    yes: 20.7%
    no: 79.2%

    startribune.com/polls/14798011.html?save= Vote &oid=2&mr=1&cid=8500397&pid=14798011

    • FBones24 says:

so we made a good trade….who cares what they think.

    • gowrightgo says:

the reality is it was a fair deal. They have a great pitcher but a guy in his final season is worth only so much. The fact that we are paying him huge money on this deal suggests that we gave up plenty to sign the most expensive pitcher in the history of the game

  26. zemonstar says:

wow this seems unreal lol Mathew Cerrone you rock :) thanks for your excellent coverage

  27. Joebaby says:

Who’s this Santana guy everyone is talking about?

  28. NJ Mets Fan says:

Omar played this perfectly. I think we can all agree that this put us over the top. We are now the clear favorite in the NL.

Great work Omar. The last year at Shea will be a championship year and probably a World Series victory.

  29. euchreking says:

    Again, link for Johan pitching:

    startribune.com/video/11669006.html

    • GravediggerHebner says:

as much as I loved that clip when it made the rounds previously I love it 57% more now

  30. DannyPla says:

AND Now what did you think about OMARRRRR???
    AHHH!!!

  31. MutantGupee says:

Funniest quote ever from beer leaguer:

Omar Minaya, in a memo to Pat Gillick:

“I see your Pedro Feliz and raise you a Johan! Check mate, biotch.”

    LOL

  32. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Ill admit I bashed Omar for his offseason last year (which was deserved regardless of this), and I also criticized what I thought would turn into another missed opportunity. Obviously Omar proved me wrong. I can give credit where credit is due, this was one of the best moves he could ever make and as a fan Im incredibly happy to have been proven wrong. Juu know wha Im sayinnnn!

  33. SamInNorthCakalakey says:

Can you imagine opening up Citi Field with a WS Banner on opening day 2009?! Incredible!

    • rockets212 says:

and Santana pitches a NO HITTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

And we did not have to give up Pelfrey or F-Mart. It is a great day to be a Mets fan!

I must admit that I did not think it was going to happen, and I was worried it would be at a higher price.

I can’t wait to see the crap get kicked out of the Braves and Phillies!

  34. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Thank you Omar for proving me wrong.

  35. cousinrk says:

If this was posted already I apolgize, but this was a classic headline from the Phillies fan site:

Beerleaguer: The sounds of our “small splashes” never sounded so small. This is a tidalwave, causing a flood that will submerge the rest of the National League East for six or seven years. Baseball’s best pitcher belongs to the Mets, set to anchor the rotation for years to come while canceling out our best hitters head-to-head.

Introducing the winner, and new champion, of the 2008 off-season, and possibly much, more more: Johan Santana and the New York Mets, who’ve stuck it right up the Phillies’ butts.

    I would recommend framing that

  36. freshprince07 says:

Yeah we have Johan, its amazing, its great, as of right now though. I’m not trying to be pessimistic but who knows, he could have any off year or even get injured, as unlikely as that may be. That be said…THIS IS AMONG THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE =)

Yet, whether hes good, great, whatever, he’s brought credibility back to the Mets and given them a huge shot in the arm. Collapse, what collapse???

Now if we could just sign Livan and move duque to the bullpen…

I really hope there comes a Santana-Hughes matchup this year…then the Yankees will realize their big mistake

  37. cousinrk says:

If this was posted already I apologize, but this was a classic headline from the Phillies fan site:

Beerleaguer: The sounds of our “small splashes” never sounded so small. This is a tidalwave, causing a flood that will submerge the rest of the National League East for six or seven years. Baseball’s best pitcher belongs to the Mets, set to anchor the rotation for years to come while canceling out our best hitters head-to-head.

Introducing the winner, and new champion, of the 2008 off-season, and possibly much, more more: Johan Santana and the New York Mets, who’ve stuck it right up the Phillies’ b-tts.

    I would recommend framing that

  38. NHL says:

I just want to add, everyone stay classy. Don’t brag, bash other teams, etc., since that just ruins the reputation of the fan base & is disgraceful. Luckily a lot of us here aren’t like that but still, I hope everyone can stay level-headed. Mets haven’t won anything yet, but it sure as hell is getting my blood pressure pumped up. Long season ahead of us. God, I can’t wait until pitchers and catchers…

    • gowrightgo says:

I am not sure I agree. While boasting and shoving it in others faces is not my style….how often does the team you root for get the get. The guy who is likely to push the team to the big show. The most talked about deal of the decade just got done and on your terms and it happened today.

If you want to troll over to Beerleaguer or whatever the Braves site is…I say troll away. Rub it in. We have 40 plus years of frustration built up since 1962. We are entitled I think to puff out the chests a bit

      • GravediggerHebner says:

personally I’m gonna wait until all the signatures are dry on the contract extension but it’s a free country baby do your own thing.

  39. CBergin0729 says:

This hole deal is outstanding. We stole him from the Twins and now i cant wait for Spring Training.

  40. gem779 says:

Matt, I’d like to let you know that I’m using your quote (on facebook as a favorite quote) about other reporters, fans, etc. cleaning egg from their face after saying our prospects weren’t enough to get the deal done. Sure, the Twins could have gotten better with Hughes from the Yanks and possibly the Ellsbury trade but we ended up getting him because that’s how negotiations work sometimes and you get lucky.

  41. DjDeF says:

Bob Nitengale on ESPNNEWS says no problem for the Mets signing Johan. He has wanted to go to the Mets for the past year, has wanted to be in NY and has wanted to get the opportunity to swing the bat.

    I am so pumped.

  42. wolverine193 says:

Well all I can simply do is apologize to Omar Minaya. You proved me wrong. I’m not so impressed by obtaining Santana as I am by holding to your guns and not giving away much. Great job. Now Wilpon can prove me wrong by signing Johan to a deal.

    • bobabouy01 says:

The second to “man up” and apologize………..only a couple hundred more to go……….
      Classy move wolverine !

  43. Nikegolf11 says:

Signing Yohan would be a great boost of confidence for the mets following the collapse of 2007. On paper it looks like they gave up nothing except for Gomez. Not getting of rid of their #1 prospect Martinez is also a plus. Mets are builiding on their future and the future starts Now! What a way to close out Shea with a World Series Championship? We Believe. The Mets will arguably the best team to beat in 08. Go Mets!

    Coolio

    Charlotte,NC

  44. seanrooney3 says:

anyone know where i can get a johan jersey asap?

  45. wolverine193 do you go to bx sci

I agree. They kept F-mart who is supposed to be a great hitter. The mets pitching prospects aren’t that good anyway. when you trading for an ace you can’t let these prospects get in the way. The yankees didn’t in the 90’s, the red sox didn’t in trading for their ace, orlando cabrera ect…

  46. gowrightgo says:

    Johan will sign the deal…

For the Omar bashers out there…

    Resume with Mets……
    1) Carlos Beltran signing
    2) Pedro Martinez signing
    3) Trade for El Duque
    4) Trade for John Maine
    5) Trade for Oliver Perez
    6) Trade for Johan Santana
    7) Billy Wagner signing
    8) Trade for Carlos Delgado
    9) Moises Alou signing
    10) Trade for Luis Castillo
    11) Original signing of Jose Reyes

Yeah he had a few duds along the way but trading away Gaby Hernandez and Yusmerio Petit and Mike Jacobs and others for guys who are contributors is worth it…

OMAR IS THE MAn….. the Wilpons chose wisely

    • Number41 says:

so where’s the champion flag, lapdoggo?

      • gowrightgo says:

nl east division flag hangs up there from 2006. one game from hanging the nl champs flag. Last yr was a bust/

lapdoggo is ready to say 2008 season should end in WS appearance Seaver

        • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Honestly GWG, who cares? I’ve been called out more times than I can count for my Omar defending, but today is not a day for score cards and to try and knock other Mets fans. This is a day all of us, from both sides of the spectrum can rejoice and be glad. Let’s resume to the scorecard-keeping come the season.

      • metsftw says:

playoffs are a crapshoot. getting there is all that matters.

  47. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I am so pumped about this. I still say Omar should sign Livan, move El Duque to the pen, and keep Pelfrey in the minors to develop that second pitch. El Duque and Pelfrey can be called upon for injuries and Livan can save the bullpen innings every fifth day. Regardless this trade is huge for us. We are instantly world series contenders!

    • Nails says:

I agree … especially since – according to Matt – he really wants to pitch with Duke …

maybe he’ll take a reasonable one year deal with a player option or something. Buy Pelf another year.

  48. dcmetsfan says:

It’s priceless to watch the reaction of Braves’ and Phils’ fans. I just read some Braves’ fan analyzing the two staffs – and he grudgingly gave the nod to Santana over Smoltz, and then another guy talked about how Hudson outdueled Santana in some game last year. And we all know Mike Hampton is going to put the Braves over the top.

    Ha Ha. I’m loving it.

  49. lilroller1986 says:

i havent had a chance to read all the 1000 plus comments yet but i want to know where firemetsmanagement is now or did he already change his name to bsmithgothosed, marrymeomar,or fillyfanatic07- great trade, great reporting/blogging matt, great day in mets history—– Johan,Johan, a mets life for me… Johan,Johan, a mets life for me

  50. leonwestbrook says:

All of the Met fans who called for Omar’s firing should be embarrassed by now.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

They’re simply preparing their retorts. They’ll be back. There already seems to be a small “he gave up too much, there’s nothing left in the cupboard” sentiment building, but I’m ignoring it tonight. I’m too happy to do otherwise.

    • jerseymetsfan says:

never called for his firring, but definitely thought he should have come under some fire for his inaction last offseaon and, up until now , this off season. but man did come thru big time……BIG TIME!!!!!!!
      could not happier….
      excuse me….gotta go , getting chocked up….

  51. CHIEFSLAPAHO75 says:

Anyone have a link where we could buy his jersey at? I would love to wear it at my Super Bowl party.

  52. CHIEFSLAPAHO75 says:

Anyone have a link where I could get a Santana jersey at? I would love to wear one on Super Bowl Sunday.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Best bet and fastest would be to go buy a Mets jersey and take it to the local sports equiptment store where the high school teams get their lettering done. Just have them put the 57 and Santana on the back of it.

  53. cousinrk says:

Embarassed and apologetic? Hear me FireMetsManagement? Everyone said give up Martinez, give up everything and Omar stayed patient understanding the position they were in with the Sox and Yanks on the outskirts and he took the risk and it paid off.

Omar has to get the credit, that’s why he’s a Gm and we are fans. If it was up to 75% of us, the Twins would have the entire farm system by now.

  54. mouserdz says:

I guess I can dust off my “In Omar We Trust” T-shirt.

  55. shea jones says:

My 8 year old son is so excited he insisted on commenting on Metsblog, since he always hears me talking about the site:

“Omar Minaya made such a great trade. I’m very happy with it and I’m really looking forward to seeing him pitch a game.”

  56. jpcw1999 says:

Omar, if you read this…thank you. You have saved us. GM/Executive of the the year. Thanks again.

  57. Thats the feel-good story of the day.

  58. Mulder720 says:

Phillies should be scared now cause there big two chase and howard is going to do nothing lmao lmao

  59. metsomniac says:

This says it all… from the phillies blog beerleaguer:

“The sounds of our “small splashes” never sounded so small. This is a tidalwave, causing a flood that will submerge the rest of the National League East for six or seven years. Baseball’s best pitcher belongs to the Mets, set to anchor the rotation for years to come while canceling out our best hitters head-to-head.

Introducing the winner, and new champion, of the 2008 off-season, and possibly much, more more: Johan Santana and the New York Mets, who’ve stuck it right up the Phillies’ butts.”

LET’S GO METS!!! screw the Super Bowl let’s get this season started!

    • metsomniac says:

ahh i didn’t realize someone already beat me to the punch in posting this… oh well This is too good….. I;m a little scared though please don’t let this deal fall because of a bad physical or a bad contract negotiation or something… i wouldn’t be able to take it.

  60. gem779 says:

I really want an “In Omar We Trust” shirt. Where can I get one???? I can’t find one…

  61. myager1 says:

    Matt & Mets Fans everywhere,

Assuming the Mets ink Santana in the next couple of days… how long will it take him to pitch the first no hitter in Mets history?

    - this year
    - he’ll do it on opening day @ Citi Field
    - before his new deal expires
    - he won’t do it (Oliver Perez will)

  62. Philnym31 says:

Now all we need to work on is locking up Oliver Perez as well as Johan and our pitching should be good for the next half a decade.

  63. jakeha23 says:

oliver perez will pitch a no-no on a friday of a series….then johan in the sunday game of the series will pitch a nother no-no

  64. Philnym31 says:

After the dust settles on locking up Johan, how about Omar turning his attention to locking up Oliver Perez … then we should be all but set for the next half a decade.

  65. nagel100 says:

great deal for the Mets. Too bad they don’t give you a ring based on expectations. You have to do it on the field and Santana is not superman. He makes us a favorite . that’s all he does.

You must perform over 162 games and you still have to be lucky. You have to be healthy and that’s just about getting to the playoffs.

We all know in a short series anyone can be taken. I’m a Met fan for a long time. This team is not as talented as the 86 team and who knows if it will be as magical as 69 team

Once again a great move and while I’m happy about the deal I’ll wait for some results that matter. Philly and The Braves won’t just roll over for anyone.

    BTW
Hopefully those gets “smashed” won’t get in a car later on for what that’s worth. You might miss the seson or a little more.

  66. jpcw1999 says:

Omar has done the unbelievable. I want to thank the Wilpons in advance. If I lived in NY, I’d be there.

  67. mbeli says:

I can’t wait to see Wallace Matthews column now, thanks jackass for that wonderful article the other day saying how the Mets are a joke. Ahhhh patience is definetly a virtue and look who has Johan now!!!! Way to go Omar for not uping the ante.

  68. cousinrk says:

Doesn’t this trade mean Wallace Matthews has to leave the country. I thought I read that somewhere. Oh wait that was a dream I had, that’s right. Lets see if that punk actually has the guts to say something positive.

So who starts opening day? Pedro or Johan?

  69. canavja says:

This feels like the Tom Seaver trade, only the exact opposite. Go Mets!

  70. sdanzig says:

It makes me feel dirty thinking about how much trade lube it must have took. *shudder*

    LET’S GO METS!!!

  71. Number41 says:

Have the Phils signed Kris Benson?

  72. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Congrats to the fans that felt optimistic and positive for this whole thing…I was nervous at times, but felt like this is how it would play out all along..

The prospect of driving in from Pennsylvania every Saturday again with no changes on the roster, was a bleak thought. I am ecstatic with this move and I know the Mets will finalize this deal quickly.

As a ex- King of Queens, I love this team, but I worried that Omar might have lost his magic touch. I owe him an apology because he stayed the course and now we get to watch one of the truly great young pitchers perform in the Blue and Orange.

This makes the ticket price increase palatable for my seasons plan. I am happy to contribute to this outcome.

    YEAH METS!!! THANK YOU OMAR!!!!

    Northampton, PA

  74. johanfan says:

Matt it’s been said before and will be said many times again. Your coverage on the Santana sweepstakes was outstanding, you summarized and offered an unbiased opinion on every word written about Santana in the past 2 months. Just wanted to say thank you.

  75. WozzyBearRU says:

“Cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town! Give em a yell! Give em a hand! And let em know you’re rooting in the stands!

    What a beautiful day!

  76. seandis123 says:

Well now Omar has done it. Got to give credit to Omar that he didn’t trade Pelfrey or Fernando in this trade.

Now the 2008 Mets are the team to beat. All hail to Omar.

  77. jpcw1999 says:

thanks again omar. you are the man. you are the man. don’t let anyone tell you different. what a genius.

  78. FBones24 says:

    Watching Geico Sportsnite….siiiick!!

  79. innaword says:

I’m excited, but can’t celebrate till he’s signed to that extension.

  80. SheaHeyKid24 says:

I wonder what fatcessa and madpuppie say tomorrow on the FAN.

  81. FBones24 says:

I would love to go back and copy and paste all of the negative posts about Omar and the Wilpons and our prospects and how we should just sign Livan/Loshe and the list goes on….

I’m glad some of us are not running this team. Omar played this hand like the pro that he is. Highway robbery… We held on to our #1 prospect and Pelfrey who I still think has great stuff and will make a turnaround.

…and I can’t stop reading the comments on Beerleaguer.

  82. dlevin315 says:

Any thoughts on Johan’s 13 losses last season. Considering the guy had 13 losses combined the two seasons before that, and 15 losses combined the three years before that. He also a subpar (for Johan) 3.33 ERA and 33 HRs allowed. I’m as happy as the next fan to have gotten the guy. But let’s not get carried away with giving him 150 million for 7 years – He is 29, not 26. Let’s get the deal done, without handcuffing the Mets to re-sign Perez or whoever else comes along. See you at Dolphins Stadium opening day. Rocking the 57 jersey!

    • DjDeF says:

W-L record is the worst stat to look at determining a pitcher’s year and if he is losing his ability. W-L’s are based on the number of runs his team puts up around. He could pitch a 1 run complete game every time yet lose because he team puts up no runs. That was the deal with Johan last year.

      Lets compare 2006 to 2007

      2006 (19 – 6)
      GS – 34
      IP – 233.2
      ERA – 2.77
      K’s – 245
      BB’s – 47

      2007 (15-13)
      GS – 33
      IP – 219.0
      ERA – 3.33
      K’s – 235
      BB’s – 52

Yes he had a higher ERA but his K’s and BB’s were right on track. His WHIP was a 1.07 in 2007 which is right on with his career which is a 1.09. He had a 1.06 in 2006. With all this in mind he wasn’t that off from a normal Johan year.

  83. nrmax88 says:

Ok, I am not as thrilled as most Met fans, but am still incredibly excited about seeing Santana pitch next year. I hate losing Gomez and Guerra, but I guess thinking rationally this is about as good as could be expected. I think I was on one end of the extreme with a lot of other guys on the other extreme. I just hope a lot of you will remember how Omar got us the best pitcher in baseball without giving up our top prospect next time you all start calling for his job. Fair?

    Lets go Mets.

    • longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

i’ve been pretty critical of omar. but this is a great trade. i’ve never been a big fan of gomez and keep pelfry is a big plus. the rotation is pretty damn solid, although i still have worries about the offense

    • longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

i’ve been pretty critical about omar but this is a great trade and there’s really nothing to quarrel about. i’m not a big believer in gomez and keeping pelfry is a big plus. the rotation is solid and very strong, although the offense still worries me

  84. ArnoldMBrockman says:

    HAPPY SANTANA CLAUSE

  85. LetsgoMets1 says:

Lets go Omar. Didn’t even have to give up F-Mart or Pelfrey wow. Now lets get this contract done. Lets Go Mets.

  86. gem779 says:

I would LOVE to go Dolphins Stadium opening day to watch Johan (except for the 6 hour drive) and classes that get in the way. Either way, if all 5 starters go the first 5 games (which might not happen with off days) Johan is scheduled for the home opener against the hated Phils. sorry if this has been posted before.

  87. bigchart333 says:

Hey Matty, good job once again on SNY. This time around, you looked LESS like Paul LoDuca, and MORE like “SACK” from WEDDING CRASHERS

  88. Charlie says:

the more i think about it, the better this trade looks.

gomez may be good, but probably won’t ever be very good
humber may never be better than a 4/5 starter
guerra may never be better than a 3/4 starter
mulvey may never be better than a 4/3 starter

santana is a hall of famer entering his prime.

we haven’t seen these words written in a while:

    in omar we trust!

  89. Johan Santana says:

    Hey Matt,

    Great job on SNY tonight.

    -

    J.S.

  90. metawan says:

So around 4:30 this afternoon I turned on my car and heard the sound of those two idiots tring to spin this trade. Mad Dog says that he doesn’t trust Johan in the big game. Tool! Then I got sick of those mooks and turned on 1050., big mistake. Kay’s first five callers, 4 yankees d-bags and a Braves fan. My one criticism of this trade, leak the next big trade in the AM or early afternoon. I much rather have heard Carton pop another Hemmeroid then hear those three morons. Imagine Beningo? Probably got so excited that he walked up to Tom Brady and kicked him in the jimmy.

    Omar…you the man.
Freddy you do th eright thing because I am buying a new tix package.
Matt Cerrone….no amount of thank is enough!

  91. LImetfan08 says:

Wish I could’ve watched Matt on SNY tonight, but apparently Marist College doesn’t have SNY in our stations which really pissed me off. Anyway, if the Mets don’t go to the world series now with Santana within 5 years…there’s obviously some curse, because if the missing link was a good starting pitcher and we got the best in the league, there’s no reason we shouldn’t. The puzzle is now completed.

  92. dcmetsfan says:

Yeah, I’ve seen that being peddled elsewhere. As I said in reply now have four starters who will average a strikeout per inning, two of whom will pitch to a 3.00 ERA or lower, and two more who will be in the 3-4 range. Even if we acknowledge that Pedro is always an injury concern and will miss a few starts, and that Perez is a little inconsistent, this is till probably the best staff in the NL.

I do love seeing some of the Phils fans consoling themselves with, “Well, now we can sign Kyle Loeshe.” Hmm, Mets get Santana, Twins get Loeshe. I wonder who wins there.

  93. jamie says:

oh the irony of krusty asking posters to be nice and genuine…it must be Johan day!

  94. jamie says:

  95. GravediggerHebner says:

Dude, you are so wonderfully disgusting and twisted it fills my soul with joy. Don’t ever change!

  96. dcmetsfan says:

Actually, in this case it was the ESPN board, which admittedly makes the boards here and at beerleaguer look like the Yale Law Journal.

  97. GravediggerHebner says:

Normally the hot dogs are bigger in Minnesota but it’s been exceptionally cold recently.

You’re Larry Flynt aren’t you Krusty?

  98. GravediggerHebner says:

Sorry Krusty, my mistake. Kudos on knowing your Larry Flynt history.

  99. EncinoMets says:

    LMAO

  100. PeterDragon says:

Fatso said “Twins didn’t get a player as good as Phil Hughes”.

As usual he makes it about the Yankees.

I am a guy who believes in Gomez and Guerra, but you need to give up to get talent.

I also think it’s way early to say that Pelfrey won’t turn out well; I’m happy he’s still around- and now won’t be rushed.
