News: Mets Acquire Santana from Twins
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 29, 2008 4:13 pm

The Mets have traded for LHP Johan Santana from the Twins in exchange for four prospects, though the deal will only be official once a contract extension is agreed upon.

from what i can gather, names of players will not officially be made public until a contract extension can be worked out…the Mets have 72 hours to work out an extension with santana and his agents, which started earlier this afternoon

Update4:50 pm

after having talked with a few people connected to the team and the player, from what i can gather, though the Mets have yet to confirm the deal, a) everything in the USA Today report (see below) is accurate, including the players who are mentioned, and b) it should not be very difficult to reach a contract extension within the 72 hours, though this becoming public will certainly add pressure to get a deal done

also, from what i can tell, this deal never came down to whether or not the Mets would add Fernando Martinez…it was more about major-league ready talent, than it was ever about additional minor leaguersbut i am sure more on that will become public in the days ahead

what’s more, it appears that santana essentially gave the Twins an ultimatum…which is great to hear, since he had the ability to force the issue all along

Update4:17 pm

According to USA Today, the deal will include Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

man, if the USA Today addition ends up being correct, and i have reason to believe that it is, and the Mets pull this off without giving up Fernando Martinez and Mike Pelfrey, well, wow…

USA Today reports it as a 48– to 72–hour window, but i’ve been told it’s 72…and with the way this process took, i would not be shocked if it took the full time frame…

Update4:28 pm

jeez, what took you so long, omar…

…well, as i had been saying, for me, this deal had to be done, if for no other reason than it is becoming harder and harder to acquire an ace on the open market…so, if one became available by trade, who was attainable, the trigger had to be pulledespecially if he comes at the cost of three pitchers, who the Mets believe will not be as good as santana during the next few years

…and so, they pulled the trigger to create a 2008 rotation of Pedro Martinez, followed by Johan Santana, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Orlando Hernandez…

with a healthy pedro, and maine and perez having learned from last year’s long season, and johan switching to a pitcher’s park in the national league, i am more than happy with this starting rotation and believe it is more than capable of helping to lead this team to the playoffs…

…what’s more, considering what the Mets had to part with to get santana, they can still lean on pelfrey should an injury strike

…by the way, the best part of this is that all of the reporters, fans, talk-show hosts and critics, who convinced themselves that the Mets had no chance to get santana, now must spend the next few weeks cleaning egg from their face…

…that said, i’d like to give special thanks to La Velle E. ‘The Real Deal’ Neal III from the Star-Tribune and Jon Heyman from SI.com, both of whom kept on this story like white to rice, and did an outstanding job every step of the way…i’d like to think i was fairly accurate as well, while always writing and believing that the Mets had a chance, despite what others kept telling me…well done, gentlemen…and thanks for all of your hard work…

…now, let’s work out that contract extension, guys…

USA Today:
The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

i would have told him to pitch atleast 60 pitches for the mets for the deal to be done and see if he can reach 95 and throw everypitch comfortably.

well i believe that this year phil humber was going to be healthy and that he was going to dominate and proove that he was the third pick of the first round pick. kevin mulvey he might have been brought up by the allstar break and we could see what he could do. and in 2009 allstar break we could see deolis guerra and fernando martinez oh yea i forgot we keep him and i dreamt that he got includedin the trade andwas injured for the rest of this year and that i was laughing at twins fans

Yeah baby!!!!! The start of a dynasty, the best pitcher on earth, this had to get done and all the signs of Johan were there all along, I always believed as long as Johan was a twin we had an above average chance of landing him. ……….Hey metsmerized, you were right all along, I just cant believe we stole him with this package of prospects. (Humber recovering from major surgury), garbage, Gomez is ok but will never be an all star, Guerra and Mulvey have potential to come around, around the time Santana’s contract expires in 2015. Omar is a god for playing his hand with style and patience. I do admit I was very wrong withmy trade prediction and happy I was. Now the Mets are highly competetive, and the Dynasy starts now.

Singing “Meet the Mets” and dancing around the aprtment in underwear a la Risky Business!

Great job, Cerrone! You were one of the few in the greater baseball commentariat who said the Mets had a good shot all along.

Hmmm, time for Gipper913 to look at flights to Miami at the end of March.

My personal opinion is that a deal will be done sometime between Thursday (24th) and Tuesday (29th)… My reasoning? Superbowl coverage is heavy now and will continue to be for a few days… then, it will slow down a bit as we must wait the 2 weeks before the bowl. It won’t pick up again until about half way through next week.
This time frame is a perfect opportunity for The Mets, The Twins and MLB to make some headlines right smack in the middle of the NFL’s spotlight!!
Makes perfect marketing sense as after the Giants win the big game, all sports media will start focusing on MLB. What better way to grab attention than to trade one of the biggest names in the sport!

Francesa and Russo are harping on why the Mets need to get this deal done; as usual dwelling on the negative.

2008 season can’t come soon enough now!

As one of the guys not too excited about the idea of dropping 4 - 5 great prospects for Santana and paying him all that dough and years…I have to tell you…I”M DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY HERE.

Great job Omar by not getting fleeced. The price is right. 2 high end prospects in Guerra and Gomez and 2 mid level prospects in Humber and Mulvey.

Solid return for a guy in his walk year and about to get the biggest payday in pitchers history.

Glad we kept hammering away at this one without any BS ultimatums. I think we all read it right. We were negotiating against ourselves or the value of those 2 first rounders.

Well said. Let’s hope the Mets can work toward replacing a couple of those pitching prospects in this year’s draft.

Amen brother. 3 picks in top 32 or so…should go a long way. Plus add in the fact the mets seem comfortable going above slot and we can see 3rd and 4th rounders sign for big money…like 1st round money…if they are worth it and dropped due to signability issues
