News: Mets Acquire Santana from Twins

January 29, 2008 at 16:13 pm · 470 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have traded for LHP Johan Santana from the Twins in exchange for four prospects, though the deal will only be official once a contract extension is agreed upon.

from what i can gather, names of players will not officially be made public until a contract extension can be worked out…the Mets have 72 hours to work out an extension with santana and his agents, which started earlier this afternoon

Update4:50 pm

after having talked with a few people connected to the team and the player, from what i can gather, though the Mets have yet to confirm the deal, a) everything in the USA Today report (see below) is accurate, including the players who are mentioned, and b) it should not be very difficult to reach a contract extension within the 72 hours, though this becoming public will certainly add pressure to get a deal done

also, from what i can tell, this deal never came down to whether or not the Mets would add Fernando Martinez…it was more about major-league ready talent, than it was ever about additional minor leaguersbut i am sure more on that will become public in the days ahead

what’s more, it appears that santana essentially gave the Twins an ultimatum…which is great to hear, since he had the ability to force the issue all along

Update4:17 pm

According to USA Today, the deal will include Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

man, if the USA Today addition ends up being correct, and i have reason to believe that it is, and the Mets pull this off without giving up Fernando Martinez and Mike Pelfrey, well, wow…

USA Today reports it as a 48– to 72–hour window, but i’ve been told it’s 72…and with the way this process took, i would not be shocked if it took the full time frame…

Update4:28 pm

jeez, what took you so long, omar…

…well, as i had been saying, for me, this deal had to be done, if for no other reason than it is becoming harder and harder to acquire an ace on the open market…so, if one became available by trade, who was attainable, the trigger had to be pulledespecially if he comes at the cost of three pitchers, who the Mets believe will not be as good as santana during the next few years

…and so, they pulled the trigger to create a 2008 rotation of Pedro Martinez, followed by Johan Santana, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Orlando Hernandez…

with a healthy pedro, and maine and perez having learned from last year’s long season, and johan switching to a pitcher’s park in the national league, i am more than happy with this starting rotation and believe it is more than capable of helping to lead this team to the playoffs…

…what’s more, considering what the Mets had to part with to get santana, they can still lean on pelfrey should an injury strike

…by the way, the best part of this is that all of the reporters, fans, talk-show hosts and critics, who convinced themselves that the Mets had no chance to get santana, now must spend the next few weeks cleaning egg from their face…

…that said, i’d like to give special thanks to La Velle E. ‘The Real Deal’ Neal III from the Star-Tribune and Jon Heyman from SI.com, both of whom kept on this story like white to rice, and did an outstanding job every step of the way…i’d like to think i was fairly accurate as well, while always writing and believing that the Mets had a chance, despite what others kept telling me…well done, gentlemen…and thanks for all of your hard work…

…now, let’s work out that contract extension, guys…

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LetsGetMetsmerized January 29, 2008 at 4:16 pm

USA Today:
The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

mikey_FF January 29, 2008 at 4:22 pm

No F-Mart in the deal?!!

mikey_FF January 29, 2008 at 4:32 pm

YESSSSSSSS!!!!! I KNEW IT COULD GET DONE!!!!!!!

extrawhitemeat January 29, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Hey Mikey.. I think I said I would tell you I was wrong if I was.. and I am..

Good Job Omar..

mikey_FF January 29, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Hey man, it’s all good … I’m just really happy! What a great job is right!!

LetsGetMetsmerized January 29, 2008 at 4:39 pm

extrawhitemeat — you are a good man… i did not think you would admit it.. I respect that a lot

mikey_FF January 29, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I didn’t doubt him … honestly I would have done the same. EWM is a good dude.

All that matters is we got Johan and we kept our crown jewel! Excellent!!!!!!!

extrawhitemeat January 29, 2008 at 4:53 pm

I just wanna play poker with Bill Smith now… I mean I just can’t believe that’s what he got for Johan..

I hope the people of Minnesota don’t pull a Steve Bartman his house or something… eeks…

help-a-rascal January 29, 2008 at 5:10 pm

sweet jebus, it actually happened. got santana and kept martinez. this can’t be real.

narcyfour January 29, 2008 at 4:26 pm

the narcy four is out from hiding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Santana a met!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Rejoice, F work, leaving now to get drunk!!!!!

Ferragamo January 29, 2008 at 4:35 pm

I said wake me up when it’s over and thank God it’s finally over and we came out on top. We have our ace, now make sure he’s 100% healthy and get this contract extension done Omar!

iknowmets January 29, 2008 at 6:28 pm

i would have told him to pitch atleast 60 pitches for the mets for the deal to be done and see if he can reach 95 and throw everypitch comfortably.

NeedAnAce January 29, 2008 at 5:15 pm

I’m going to have to change my screen name to GOTANACE!

iknowmets January 29, 2008 at 6:26 pm

well i believe that this year phil humber was going to be healthy and that he was going to dominate and proove that he was the third pick of the first round pick. kevin mulvey he might have been brought up by the allstar break and we could see what he could do. and in 2009 allstar break we could see deolis guerra and fernando martinez oh yea i forgot we keep him and i dreamt that he got includedin the trade andwas injured for the rest of this year and that i was laughing at twins fans

The Captain January 29, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Yeah baby!!!!! The start of a dynasty, the best pitcher on earth, this had to get done and all the signs of Johan were there all along, I always believed as long as Johan was a twin we had an above average chance of landing him. ……….Hey metsmerized, you were right all along, I just cant believe we stole him with this package of prospects. (Humber recovering from major surgury), garbage, Gomez is ok but will never be an all star, Guerra and Mulvey have potential to come around, around the time Santana’s contract expires in 2015. Omar is a god for playing his hand with style and patience. I do admit I was very wrong withmy trade prediction and happy I was. Now the Mets are highly competetive, and the Dynasy starts now.

mavicario January 29, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Amazing!!

I’m so excited right now! If this breaks down or turns out to be a hoax I’m gonna cry.

Singing “Meet the Mets” and dancing around the aprtment in underwear a la Risky Business!

Great job, Cerrone! You were one of the few in the greater baseball commentariat who said the Mets had a good shot all along.

Hmmm, time for Gipper913 to look at flights to Miami at the end of March.

My personal opinion is that a deal will be done sometime between Thursday (24th) and Tuesday (29th)… My reasoning? Superbowl coverage is heavy now and will continue to be for a few days… then, it will slow down a bit as we must wait the 2 weeks before the bowl. It won’t pick up again until about half way through next week.
This time frame is a perfect opportunity for The Mets, The Twins and MLB to make some headlines right smack in the middle of the NFL’s spotlight!!
Makes perfect marketing sense as after the Giants win the big game, all sports media will start focusing on MLB. What better way to grab attention than to trade one of the biggest names in the sport!

hsimms January 29, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Wow, Wow, Wow

cyclone January 29, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Finally. I knew it would get done. Now all the Omar haters can go eat crow.

wolfie44 January 29, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Wow! I guess we got our 200+ innings guy!

Francesa and Russo are harping on why the Mets need to get this deal done; as usual dwelling on the negative.

2008 season can’t come soon enough now!

pezao January 29, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Is it real?!?!

gowrightgo January 29, 2008 at 5:24 pm

As one of the guys not too excited about the idea of dropping 4 – 5 great prospects for Santana and paying him all that dough and years…I have to tell you…I”M DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY HERE.

Great job Omar by not getting fleeced. The price is right. 2 high end prospects in Guerra and Gomez and 2 mid level prospects in Humber and Mulvey.

Solid return for a guy in his walk year and about to get the biggest payday in pitchers history.

Glad we kept hammering away at this one without any BS ultimatums. I think we all read it right. We were negotiating against ourselves or the value of those 2 first rounders.

Xavier22 January 29, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Well said. Let’s hope the Mets can work toward replacing a couple of those pitching prospects in this year’s draft.

gowrightgo January 29, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Amen brother. 3 picks in top 32 or so…should go a long way. Plus add in the fact the mets seem comfortable going above slot and we can see 3rd and 4th rounders sign for big money…like 1st round money…if they are worth it and dropped due to signability issues

gowrightgo January 29, 2008 at 5:51 pm

amen brother. And with 3 picks in the top 32…we should be able to get that done.

ravi3 January 29, 2008 at 4:14 pm

gowrightgo January 29, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Anyone thinking this puts Pelfrey where he belongs…AAA developing his 2nd pitch?

CaseStreet January 29, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Definitely. I say he gets called up and gets near 16 starts. Let’s hope for 32 games each from Santana, Maine, and Perez, and 24 games each from Pedro and Duque. Anyone think we still go after Livan?

Are you freakin kidding me? We have Santan, Maine, Perez for a few more years. Pedro will extend. And Pelfrey will be ready in another year after he splits time in New Orleans and Queens.

We don’t need them. Hopefully, draft picks and guys in the minors will be ready when we need to replace the above.

O.P.

we have the best rotation in the NL!

Now time to buy a Mets home pinstripe jersey with the number 57 on the back!!!

jectalo January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

it’s on usa today

Bengals55 January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

A trade agreement is in place, the newspaper said, but the Mets must reach agreement with Santana on a lucrative contract extension to complete the deal.

Santana, 28, is expected to require a deal of at least six years and $20 million per season as the price for waiving his no-trade clause.

Peter January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Where’s my Harry and David basket?????

GravediggerHebner January 29, 2008 at 4:47 pm

sorry no money left after Johan takes it all, but please accept this laurel and hearty handshake

metsfan05 January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

i swear if usa today is lying and it didnt happen i am gonna personallly hunt them down and …..well you know the rest

ravin108 January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

On the Mets side of the deal, this sounds too good to be true

FBones24 January 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Mike and the Mad Dog are raining on our parade as usual. They are saying this isn’t a done deal, does Santana want to come to the Mets, will he agree to the deal…blah blah blah. They suck

dave27 January 29, 2008 at 4:39 pm

No, he doesn’t. He wants to be a Yankee like everyone who can tell a baseball from a meatball.

I wish this fat f**k would disappear already.

MudvilleNine January 29, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Watching them on Yes. Mike has such a puss on him. He is totally aggravated that his Yankees didnt get him.

bigchart333 January 29, 2008 at 4:30 pm

What’s the thoughts on the six – seven year thing? Will the Mets do this? Can they do 5 and an option?

extrawhitemeat January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

I said I would say it.. and I will..

I was wrong.. well done Omar…

QnsNative718 January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Peter January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Fatso and Fruitloops are talking about it now.

caitmo January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Getting a WEEEEEE bit worried. None of the major sports outlets (ESPN, FOXSPORTS, CBS) have announced this today? USATODAY? Um… Yeah, someone probably sent them a “tip”

freshnewsound January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

i think we have to give a lot of credit to the mets for drafting mulvey when they did…i have a feeling the mets saw something in him other teams didn’t

way to go scouting dept, way to go omar

let’s go mets!

MDMetfan January 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

I had to leave the site for a while to have a conference call…I just crapped my pants, I can’t believe it!!!!

gipper913 January 29, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Is it wrong to weep with joy???????

Woooo Hoooooo!

Omar, you are a god.

Now, Wilpons, pay Johan what it takes to get the contract done.

jtcuse44 January 29, 2008 at 4:32 pm

How do we know this wont be another Bedard Jones thing….I am still skeptical…..until someone else reports this….

metsdude13 January 29, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Because thankfully Wilpon does not equal Angelos.

It’s being reported on every station – ESPN Radio, WFAN, USA Today, etc. It’s NOT a done deal – but the players have been agreed upon and it’s just up to the Mets and Santana to work out an extension

Wayneo January 29, 2008 at 4:34 pm

For the sake of every one’s psyche I hope is true.

pcmetsfan07 January 29, 2008 at 4:35 pm

that’s a great dillema to have…

icedrake523 January 29, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Pedro over Santana, Matt? You’re nuts

Joe Bacci January 29, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Pedro over Santana.

Pedro
Santana
Maine
Perez
Hernandez

Pedro is an ace and the heart and soul of this team.

gipper913 January 29, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Ummmmm…..no.

Maybe if Johan wants to be extra-classy and respect his elder.

But Johan > Pedro

CaseStreet January 29, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Yesssss. I’m getting my weeken tix package. I can have a life again. I think I still have a wife and a kid. Oh and I need to start making a baby boy, I promised I’d name him Johan Perez.

The four players to be named are Wright, Reyes, Maine, and Perez….haha just kidding.

mhochman January 29, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Well they are talking about it on WFAN. but still nothing offiicial

BaysideBillyD January 29, 2008 at 4:37 pm

The Wilpon’s are committted to making this happen. There is no way that the organization would have let this go public if they weren’t absolutely sure about signing him.

That said, I am impregnating my wife tonight and naming the baby Johan… boy OR girl!

GravediggerHebner January 29, 2008 at 4:37 pm

dave27 January 29, 2008 at 4:38 pm

If Pelfrey can nail down that 5 spot we’ve got Santana fronting 3 guys under 27, 2 of whom won 15 last year.

Who needs prospects?

napes22 January 29, 2008 at 4:38 pm

LOL I hate Chris Russo.

“The Twins got ripped, they should have went with the Yankees package to get Hughes. I dont know much about the Mets prospects but i know they should have dealth with the Yankees.”

If you don’t know, then don’t make stupid statements you buffoon.

DjDeF January 29, 2008 at 4:47 pm

that is how he got where he is…you would think he wouldn’t make stupid statements because with the Gmen in the super bowl they aren’t relaying on pissing callers off the get them through the ridiculously long show

AppleInTheHat January 29, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Give Chris Russo a break, he was too busy watching tennis to spend five minutes online researching the biggest trade of the baseball off season, even if it involved the Mets and the Yankees as prime suspects. He may not know much about Carlos Gomez, but I bet he can tell us all about San Francisco’s back up third basemen and that is SO important to WFAN listeners.

Helped Keith Move January 29, 2008 at 4:38 pm

I’m going out tonight and getting absolutely hammered.

Tonight I drink to Johan and Omar!!

It’s overcast in Jersey but cotdamn it’s a beautiful day!

x-nady January 29, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Where are all the Omar haters? I assume they wil think of something.

“How could he give up Guerra”

“Why couldn’t he do a 3 for 1 swap”

“Why couldn’t he just wait till next year free agency”

ALL BULLSH*T

WE GOT JOHAN SANTAN B*TCHES!

I wonder what JImmy Rolliins has to say about that…whos the first to go on that Phillies website to stir the sh*t?

mrosey January 29, 2008 at 4:39 pm

AlexEscobars5Tools January 29, 2008 at 4:40 pm

FBones24 January 29, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Let Pelfrey develop the confidence to CLOSE
Sign Lackey next year
Draft power arms and PAY THEM
Let Fernando be our lf’er of the future
Draft a decent outfielder

Save money*, build a great rotation and let Santana lead the way for years to come. Brilliant.

* If we do land him (7 year deal), look for Fred to decide to fall in love with Prospects over time ;)

DjDeF January 29, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Matt-

Omar deserves some credit but not before you man. Wow you truly killed yourself and kept all of our hopes alive about getting Johan even when almost every media person has been giving the Mets no shot. I love the line about Fatcesca great. He will eat it off his face and the angry puppy’s as well. We all owe you a lot for everything you have done keeping us up to date. And really the site did not crash. Simply amazing. Keep up the great work

murpheeee January 29, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Seconded.

jstocks5 January 29, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Wow. I woke up from a power nap after school to look at my computer and see “News: Mets acquire Santana from Twins”.
Truly astonishing. I’m pumped. Thanks a lot Matt for keeping us aware of whats going on with the Santana alerts. To Omar, about friggen time, but good ass job. At this point i don’t care what they sign him to. Give him ARod money as long as he stays in Flushing. In Omar we trust.

Santana: The King Of Queens.

YIPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

I have goose bumps…amazing…they wont go away…its actually getting irritating…but seeing him on that “Mets’ card just keeps bringing them back.

Adios Gomez- we hardly knew you. Glad I was at your first game where you hit a double in your first at bat…nice catch too

Adios Humber- develop somewhere else…wait…that will be here in Rochester

Adios Mulvey- Think you will be a decent MLB player. See you next year possibly too.

Adios Guerra- Hardly knew ya…will def see you soon here in the Chester.

WELCOME JOHAN!!!! WELCOME!!!!

High comedy.

Gammons on the ESPNews interview. He honestly sounded like someone broke into his house and kicked his dog. He had nothing good to say about any of the Mets propects in this deal, and is practically in disbelief that his almighty Sox couldn’t pull the deal off considering the perceived lower than expected asking price.

F Gammons.
F Mike and the Lapdog
F Sox Nation
F Yankee Piinstripes

A lot of those dimwits calling for Omar to be fired should be eating a lot of humble pie.

PURE GENIUS.

To snag the best pitcher in baseball without giving away anything.

Yankee and Bosox fans should be incensed. Their GMs just let the catch of the season, nay last 7 seasons just slip through their hands. LOL.

hornthecheck January 29, 2008 at 4:55 pm

wow, wow, wooooooooooowwwww!

no we have a bona fide ace to compliment a healthy pedro, two rising studs in ollie and maine, and a solid (pending no injuries) 5th starter in el duque (granted we dont sign his brother, which prob wont happen but still…).

wow im still shocked, mainly because our offer was not the best, the yanks could have easily gotten him with hughes jult like the sox with lester. but omar was persistant and did not give up with his offer….

GREAT DAY TO BE A MET FAN!!!

(remember this isnt over yet, we still have to sign him, even if it takes 6 or 7 years and 20 mil a year to do so..)

Number41 January 29, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Well I’ll be dipped.
Sorry to all for my disbelief and negative remarks.
Mostly to Omar and Matt.
I am a very happy Met fan again.
I’m going to go repair the window over here by my computer now….

all the yankee fans in my office are raining on my parade…

BaysideBillyD January 29, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Prediction…
Johan WILL win the Cy Young this year.
Typically, when a pitcher switches leagues (going from AL to NL) their first year ERA decreases by a full run per game.
Couple this with the fact that he will be leaving the homerdome to a pitcher friendly park like Shea, and you have the makings for an absolutely dominant season.
Bring it on!!!

LetsGetMetsmerized January 29, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Second place to Petey

daspot January 29, 2008 at 5:28 pm

This is my first post saving it for a special occasion. I checked this sight everyday 100 times a day just like everyone else. Kudos to Matthew Cerrone for his amazing coverage of the Santana talks. You believed…we believed…and the NL East Gotta Believe!

There is a chill in Philadelphia and Atlanta tonight. I’m not going to say the Mets are the team to beat but the Mets just got back into the conversation in a big way!

“Well, crap.

USA Today is reporting a four-for-one swap , as the Mets will send Phillip Humber, Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey and Deoils Guerra to the Mets for the All-World left-hander.

More on this to come, but a few knee-jerk quick thoughts:

1. The Mets stole this one. They didn’t have to give up their No. 1 prospect.
2. The Mets are suddenly the favorite to win both the East and the NL.
3. We’re in trouble.”

1. The Mets stole this one. They didn’t have to give up their No. 1 prospect.
2. The Mets are suddenly the favorite to win both the East and the NL.
3. We’re in trouble.”

Oh My God, this is the greatest news ever! By the way, I’m new here, my buddy Saltzy23 turned me on to this site. I cannot believe we got Johan. I think we’re right here with the Yankees and Red Sox in terms of World Series favorites.

By the way, Saltzy 23 owns and wears a Braves jersey. Just thought I’d rib him a little bit in my first post. It’s a Greg Maddux jersey, so he justifies it by saying that he’s a great pitcher. But it’s a Braves jersey nonetheless…traitor.

Back to reality…this is the greatest news ever! Let’s go Mets!

Joe Bacci January 29, 2008 at 5:10 pm

rjaggernauth January 29, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Well think of it this way…

We got Santana for 4 of the top 5 prospects we have…

& Let’s also think of it this way too. I’m as happy as every other mets fan screaming in their office and getting carpal tunnel syndrome from this excessive typing, but I’m going to think rationally.

Say we sign Johan to 6 years 140 mil. How well will he hold up over that stretch?

What about Carlos Gomez? Will he become an Alex Rios type of player for the Twins? or will he become another Alex Escobar?

Will Guerra have success on a major league level? Or will he become another overhyped Mets prospect?

Will Mulvey be seasoned enough? How well will he do?

What about Humber? Is Tommy John Surgery going to hurt him?

I hate to ponder these questions now, but even if let’s say Gomez becomes Alex Rios, Guerra becomes Oliver Perez 2.0, & Mulvey becomes Ted Lilly…we still lucked out on this trade. We scored.

stickguy January 29, 2008 at 5:32 pm

regardless of what the prospects become, it is a good trade from the standpoint of not crippling the team in 2008, while still keeping guys for 2009 (Pelf, possibly Martinez).

Now they have to avoid a huge rash of injuries, and likely dip into FA pool next year.

Now lets hope he is healthy, and the next wave of prospects come fast.

JohnMilner January 29, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Beerleaguer: The sounds of our “small splashes” never sounded so small, because this is a tidalwave, causing a flood that will submerge the rest of the National League East for six or seven years. Baseball’s best pitcher belongs to the Mets, set to anchor the rotation for years to come while canceling out our best hitters head-to-head.

Introducing the winner, and new champion, of the 2008 off-season, and possibly much, more more: Johan Santana and the New York Mets, who’ve just stuck it right up the Phillies’ butts.

metsdude13 January 29, 2008 at 5:08 pm

From MetsBlog on December 8, 2007

…since the Yankees and Red Sox will not part with more than one or two of their best prospects, acquiring up to five or six semi-developed, high-ceiling players from the Mets is starting to be Minnesota’s most attractive option, and they’re comfortable with that – especially considering that santana can ‘strongly suggest’ he end up in Queens, seeing as he has a full no-trade clause…as such, the Mets and Twins have essentially agreed upon what players can and cannot be involved in the trade, and so it’s now up to santana and his agents to frame out a contract extension…

Thank you Matt. You had this thing from the start and it was really really impressive.

Go Bro January 29, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Nice job all the way Matt!!!! It has been a pleasure to follow this story on this site.We all have gone nuts together. I wish I could hug you all.
In Omar we trusted he did it. Fantastic job.
Now Fred will do his job and spend the money. Fantastic also.
I am so excited. We’ll analyze this later but what a great deal, we keep FMart and Pelfry. Everyone gets better…the starters, the offense, the bull pen.
OH Man I can’t wait for the season to start. I started to doubt at the end but kept believing that Omar could pull this off. AND HE DID.
Number 57 is coming to Shea.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Constnza81V2.0 January 29, 2008 at 5:10 pm

A. If the ebb and flows of this story and its ultimate culmination does not validate metsblog.com as not just a fan site but a legitimate media source, I don’t know what does.

B. This is truly wonderful news, and once its a done, done deal, I will be even more elated. The Mets needed this so badly, not only from a talent-perspective, but from a PR perspective. I have always worn my mets hat with pride, now I hope some others will too and the wave of negativity that had overwhelemed this fan community since last September, will finally come to a calm.

MealTicket January 29, 2008 at 5:26 pm

LUNT101 January 29, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Great post nychurch111.

The Mets are in PRIME position to win the NL East now. Omar has done a great job this offseason, starting with the Milledge trade. Sure, he could be a good player for the Nationals next year but getting Brian Schneider and Ryan Church to fill 2 huge holes will be extremely important. I think Church will have a big season batting in our 7th hole. Having said that, I think we need to sign Kevin Mench or trade for a guy like Matt Murton (who is on the trading block in Chicago) to platoon with Church and play against lefties. Omar has also made some nice moves to help the bullpen (Wise, Register, Stokes). He got rid of Mota and his contract for nothing. He picked up Angel Pagan as an emergency outfielder which I think will be key if god forbid the injury bug appears. With the Santana trade, we were able to keep F-Mart (our #2 objective during this process, next to getting Johan himself, of course) … AND we keep Pelfrey who will be able to go back to AAA with no pressure on him to start the season and get back into the same form he was in during last year’s spring training. I am EXTREMELY excited about what this team will be able to accomplish after all of these upgrades, including the acquisition of the best pitcher in baseball (how great does it feel to say that!!)

bc twins fan January 29, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Congradulations guys. I hope we (the Twins) get a decent return on our investment. He is a special player to watch. When he is pitching try and get seats on either base line inside the bases to watch pro hitters look foolish when he pulls the string on his pitches. Nothing better in the game to see. This is a vey sad day for Twins fans.

mets17 January 29, 2008 at 5:29 pm

You do get some very good prospects in return though. A prospect is a prospect but you get some nice ones.

KinersKornerman January 29, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Twins fan, you are ALL Class, bro. Thanks for the well wishes. May Gomez and Guerra get you into the 2016 WS, right after Johan retires.

x-nady January 29, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Gotta give it up for Teams and fans like the Twins that do not have (or are unwilling to allocate) the funds like the Yanks, Sox & Mets of the MLB.

The Twins Scouting is prob. the best in baseball. You guys will be fine, but will never be able to keep your guys if managment doesn’t open their wallet.

You are getting a potential star in Guerra. Gomez & Humber will be serviceable, and the Jury is still out on Mulvey but he has a very high ceiling as well.

Good luck, and I can’t wait to see the first game Johan pitches.

Nate W. January 29, 2008 at 5:34 pm

I think you will be more than happy saying the same thing about Guerra in a few years. And Gomez, if he can handle that roof will catch anything and everything in CF.

Its a great day to be a Mets fan indeed, but I think the Twins have restocked well, and given themselves a young team capable of contending for a 3-5 year run after a down year or two.

Gil the Pill January 29, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Very Classy comment from a Twins fan. Now dont all you idiots who went to the Twins and Phillys sites to talk trash feel like the low down white trash you really are?

rjaggernauth January 29, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Thanks for that comment & showing class by not booing your general manager about getting better prospects. Hopefully this works out in the long run for both sides, & hopefully Gomez becomes a top notch OF, Humber, Guerra, & Mulvey become part of the Starting Rotation or Bullpen w/ Liriano…

Good Luck to you next season, & you have some bright spots in your future…that comment was one of the best I’ve seen all day.

AppleInTheHat January 29, 2008 at 5:23 pm

It is a saying that has been around since the day after Abner Doubleday first tossed a small round ball in Cooperstown, NY. “Pitching and defense” wins pennants. The Mets have improved their pitching and defense this off summer. ‘Nuff said about the Met’s offseason.

oleosmirf January 29, 2008 at 5:24 pm

before you guys criticize Francesa all he is saying is that if for some reason the Mets don’t sign Santana all of us would be heartbroken.

metsdude13 January 29, 2008 at 5:32 pm

But why is he discussing that? The Mets just traded for Santana, and know what it will take to sign him. Why would they have agreed to the players if they won’t agree to the money? OF COURSE they will sign him, and the fact that he keeps bringing up IF they don’t is just bitter, unecessary, and the reason I only listen to ESPN 1050 Radio now.

Great trade for us, a steal if you will. Its a shame though that it will go to waste because or bullpen is still garbage, our shortstop is still going to break down when it counts, our third baseman is a flaming homosexual, and John Maine and Oliver Perez our two other “Aces” are only seen as good by our biased fanbase when in reality they are drastically overrated.

isee six years 130 million and an option

Nate W. January 29, 2008 at 5:48 pm

This couldn’t have worked out better if the four players are true.

Even with Johan, Pelfrey would be missed this year as a 6th starter option. Humber and Mulvey are guys who can be more easily replaced. Gomez, despite his talent and great humble personality, wont really be missed, but FM would be. They gave up just enough, and kept what they will need in the near and not so near future.

nagel100 January 29, 2008 at 5:49 pm

the man can pitch and the man can hit as well.

the last 4 years his numbers are just superb. 183 hits allowed in 219 innings. add in 235K’s and you know he has great stuff. He did give up 33 homers so let’s face it, he is not superman. In fact he is not Pedro Martinez in Pedro’s dominating years. He’s just the best pitcher in baseball the last 4 years.

Frankly I would like to reduce his innings to around 200. We will need him for the post-season so keeping him strong is important.

I think he should get the opening day since he is our ace.

nice pick-up!!!!!

nydre78 January 29, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Time for all you Omar bashers to eat some crow and jump back on the bandwagon!!!

GravediggerHebner January 29, 2008 at 5:49 pm

these are the first two comments on the trade as cut and pasted from AaronGleeman.com (mostly Twins site)

Smith blinked on the Delmon Young trade and included Morlan instead of Rincon.

Now it appears that Smith blinked in the Santana trade and didn’t force anyone to include a premier prospect.

I can see other GM’s already circling like vultures looking for a Nathan trade.

Gravatar I cannot believe this is the deal we made….

We went from Cabrera/Hughes or Lester/Crisp/or Ellsbury to this???

Well, we’ve now traded two changeup throwing, Cy Young Award winning lefties to the Mets…

Hmmm. . . . Well, I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised by Gomez. Not sure about Humber or Mulvey, but Guerra could be a beast, too. If both Humber and Mulvey can be serviceable ML starters, they’ll have made a stellar deal, considering the fact that what they gave up was one year of Santana. And OH YEAH — where exactly was Smith’s leverage, Twinkie fans?

I’m excited we kept FMart… Think he’ll be something special.

Did you read from SI.com that Omar almost snuck Sosa in there instead of Humber? Good try, Big O.

I’ve thought all along that 6/120 will do it.

Why do people keep asking the Mets should go 5 years at 22 or 25 a year, instead of 6 at 20. Is it insurance?

But, wouldn’t you rather have Santana for 6/120 or 5/115?

gipper913 January 29, 2008 at 6:14 pm

The union will pressure Johan to get more than Zito. And, yes the 5 yrs is an insurance issue.

It’s a great day to be a Mets fan. We got the best pitcher in baseball and did not even have to give up our top prospect.

Words can’t describe how ecstatic I am…. seriously…

BrianFL January 29, 2008 at 5:58 pm

It was hilarious watching Peter Gammons break this on ESPN, seeing as how he’s been saying all along that our prospects sucked and that we didn’t have the players to even make a deal happen.

Looks like head scout of the Twins, Joe McCalvaine, who wanted the Mets trade the whole time, made up for his Dykstra/McDowell for Juan Samuel trade.

Thank you Omar. Thank you so much.

gipper913 January 29, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Sorry dude. It must suck to be a fan of such a small market team. That said, the Twinkies have excellent souts and you got a lot of upside in thie deal for, what is in effect, one year of Johan plus the honor of paying him $150 million to the Mets.

What is this we hear from olney and such clowns about Johan “breaking down” and possibly failing the physical? Clue us in, Twins fans!

darkstar73 January 29, 2008 at 6:07 pm

this is for all the doubters, SUCK IT. Omar delivered, he got it done. Mets in ‘08!

Blue_n_Orange January 29, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I was doing an all-day photo shoot for a client and I just found out! My brother left me frantic voicemail and I came straight to metsblog! I am so psyched for Omar and the whole Mets franchise! Matt, you did a whale of a job covering this story through all of the (real or percieved) twists and turns. Oh yeah, and NRMAX- whatever the he’ll the rest of your handle is…you can kiss my hairy beanbag, you know-it-all know-nothing. It’s a great day in Metsville!! Where’s the grain alcohol?!!

Congrats, Mets fans, our our selection of Bill Smith as GM. This may be the single worst deal at the time made in the history of baseball. Ok, I’m being dramatic. Second worst.

bxsci insight January 29, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Don’t worry, when we win the World Series will put a 50 second memorandum to the twins on the jumbo-tron

KinersKornerman January 29, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Twinsfan, we feel your pain. Remember we were the team that traded young Nolan Ryan, and then Tom Seaver in his prime. Not to mention that Rick Aguilera guy. Tough it out dude, better days are ahead for you, too.

iknowmets January 29, 2008 at 6:09 pm

and just like that all eyes on the mets this year.
i expect alot of more mets fans now.
mets win 101 games this year
and now u can start clapping and cheering for omar minaya and he will get a extension and start buying them johan santana jerseys baby

the clap January 29, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Omar’s earned a reprieve after a ver disappointing 2007 season/off-season. Now the Wilpons have to pony up some of their unending stash of cash, and all will be good.

Down the line, this may turn out to be a Viola-like deal. Monster years to any starter is always asking for trouble, and the Twins certainly are getting some promising, cheap youngsters and they have a top notch system to develop them in. The worst thing for them to do is to stick Gomez in CF this year. That kid seriously needs a year at AAA. But hell, that’s their problem.

For the Mets. BAM, instantly top of the heap again in the NL East, and all of a sudden, that’s a scary, eclectic mix of arms they’re throwing out there (Johan, Pedro, OP, Maine, El Duque, Pelfrey) even if a couple of them breakdown along the way.

Plus with F-Mart still in the fold, the teenage Latin pipe still humming and 3 picks in the top 33 coming up in June, the farm will be replenished fairly quickly.

darkstar73 January 29, 2008 at 6:14 pm

can someone give Omar a pat on the back? For all those haters, saying he was sleeping, doing nothing, this is for you. He got it done, he did it. Simply amazing. Goes to show you that hyper reactive fans on metsblog are what they are, clueless.

krumbledkookie January 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Great trade, great day to be a Mets fan, but lets be sober about what we gave up. Bill Smith did a good job, all things considered. Gomez, while far from a sure thing, is likely going to be a pretty good player. And I’m willing to bet that at least two of Humber, Mulvey and Guerra will be winning pitchers in the big leagues for years to come. The Twins must believe that too, because as we all know, their scouts and talent evaluators are among the best in all of baseball.

Once again, we can all rejoice in our outstanding GM, who did what he had to do and got this deal done without having to give up FMart, Heilman, Pelfrey, or Church. Great job by Omar for holding out.

Ryn5 January 29, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Great job Omar

DannyPla January 29, 2008 at 7:45 pm

mr.metguy January 29, 2008 at 8:09 pm

But wait! With Gomez gone, who is going to smell our bats to make sure that they don’t have corks in them?

gomets6091 January 29, 2008 at 8:25 pm

WOW. Just….WOW

I was over at my girlfriends place for her birthday, so I COMPLETELY missed out on all this craziness, and then I come online at the beginning of my night class and see this. I almost shouted out with joy….this is INCREDIBLE. First the Giants make the Super Bowl, then the Mets get Santana a week later…it’s a good time to be a fan right now (of the Mets/Giants anyway).

By the way, can you say: METS ARE THE TEAM TO BEAT.

also, I just went on some ESPN forums, and the Twins fans seem pretty depressed about how they got fleeced. It sure feels nice to finally be on the right side of one of these trades…

CaseStreet January 29, 2008 at 9:25 pm

I grew up with Shea and the Globe outside my window. A few years ago my brother decided he was not a Yankees fan along with my other brother. This year is going to be great for me and the rest of my Met Lovin family. I’m proud for Omar and what he’s accomplished. He’s made us all proud.

Shea Faithful January 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

A great day for Mets fans everwhere. Now, after Omar signs Johan to a nice 6-year extension, he can focus on locking up O. Perez to an extension as well. Also, a Kevin Mench-type to share time with Church in right would bring it all together. I’m ready for Opening Day!

jdon January 29, 2008 at 9:45 pm

omar got him by default, but give him credit for not caving on martinez. still, he was third best here, but had the most interest. anybody could have made this deal, even steve phillips.

rockets212 January 29, 2008 at 11:33 pm

no steve phillips would have given up reyes and wright and maine and perez and FMart and everyone else. Omar did good, but he didnt pull off a miracle

drichman January 29, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Matt, I think you are due a measure of gratitude for your reporting. For me, you became the main source of information about the Santana saga and the only source that remained untainted by the anti-Met bias which pervades the New York media. From the beginning, driven by the likes of Buster Olney (whose distaste for the Mets dates back to his days with the Times), it was unthinkable that the Mets could ever secure Santana in the trade, running down the entire Mets farm system in the process. Metsblog, to its credit, paid little heed to the New York media and national media which appears to have taken its lead from the New York media and looked, instead, to the Minnesota press which had a far more honest assessment of the situation. Though the Minnesota press was reporting that Santana preferred the Mets from the beginning, the New York media (Olney, Francesa et al) ignored that fact and kept at the Yankees-Red Sox dance in play. One thing that I believe you did report a while back, but has gotten little attention since is the relationship between Santana and Luis Castillo. Why the signing of Castillo was viewed as a good albeit rather boring move, I wonder if the decision to sign him was to help lure Santana to the Mets. It certainly didn’t hurt if, as you reported, the Mets were Santana’s first choice. I also wonder if Santana’s drop off in the second half had more to do with Castillo’s trade that with any physical problems that Olney, Stark et al were injecting into the drama. Many thanks for a great job!!

letz_go_metz January 29, 2008 at 10:51 pm

The Mets win! The Mets win it! The Mets win the Santana sweepstakes!!!

Kudos to Omar for not overpaying. We gave up real value, no doubt. I expect to see at least two of the prospects we sent to MPLS grow up to be excellent major leaguers. Johan should bring us into real contention and hopefully, playoff success.

Yes, yes, yes, it was all worth it, following this painful drama from day to merciless day.

Now let’s sign ‘em and get this done!

rockets212 January 29, 2008 at 11:31 pm

LUNT101 January 29, 2008 at 5:51 pm

i agree with signing a RH platoon for RF, but let el duque pitch from the rotation. the idea got thrown around on this site but omar has said el duque will be a starter and rightfully so. We all got teased by the idea because his last 3 appearances were in relief and he did well but lets not kid ourselves. This guy is a starter! He has been his whole career and can still go out there for 6 innings and fool any hitter in baseball. When you have Feliciano, Heilman and Wagner backing that up, I say El Duque is the right man to take the ball every 5th day.

toomanyuniforms January 29, 2008 at 6:04 pm

I was, as well. This is the precise package I thought might be appropriate, but I didn’t think Team Twink would take it. I hereby bar myself from any future criticism of this deal that doesn’t acknowledge that I thought it was a great trade at the time.

Metsgirl23 January 29, 2008 at 7:24 pm

I completely agree with you LUNT101 el duque is a better starter I think he just can go out there in the begining of the game for 6 good innings! I also say that El Duque is the right man for the 5th spot. I have total faith that he will do a good job as a starter than a closer in the bull pen.

euchreking January 29, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Mine is October 15th, the day the Mets in 1986 emerged victorious in that monster of a game against Houston. Here’s to that happening again this year!!!
