Note: Gomez Not Allowed to Play
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 29, 2008 7:54 am

According to Impactico Deportivo, citing the player’s family, the Mets may have told OF Carlos Gomez that he is not allowed to play in this year’s Caribbean World Series, as he had been invited to do.

…i e-mailed the Mets, but have not been sent back an official responsethe best i can gather, from people connected to the team, is that the Mets were never going to allow gomez to play more than X number of games this winter, regardless of whether he is or isn’t being discussed in a deal for santanaof course, what else would you expect them to say

…typically, when this sort of thing happens, my first reaction is to assume the player has been traded…but, there always seems to end up being some other explanationunless you’re M’s OF Adam Jones, of course

…by the way, i posted this story last night, but pulled it because i wanted to do a bit of research first…sorry if its removal caused any sort of frenzy…but, you know, better safe than sorry

The Mets say that this was their intention all along, to limit Gomez’ games. However, in the Dominican league they’re heading towards the Caribbean World Series Finals, so why would they limit his play in the championship? The regular season, yes, I can see that, but not during the championships. I think this has some relevance to the potential Santana deal.

    • HOFMets57 says:

I do, too. Omar has something hot cooking in the kitchen and the main entree is a 2-time Cy Young winner!

    • nrmax88 says:

It might have something to do with a trade, but the “championship” arguement is a weak one. The mets dont give a crap about the dominican winter league world series, ya know? I think this really could signal a trade is soon though.

    • da burg's greatest mets fan says:

His team isnt ‘heading’ to the finals, they are IN the finals. I saw the recap of game 5 on espn deportes…Le Tigres (Gomez’ team) won game 5 3-1 and lead the series 3-2. so this is an abrupt change and it seems to me that Santana should be a Met by Thursday, pending the contract extension talks.

      • HOFMets57 says:

Taking Gomez out might signal the START of the 72-hour negotiating window, which would mean yes, Thursday. Good call, burg

        • BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Anytime a player gets the 72 hr negotiating window we’ll hear about it once it’s granted.

It seems like they have guys in the Commishes office whose job is just to leak that kind of thing.

      • Jova1931 says:

No, not the Dominican finals, the Championships of the Caribbean World Series, which is a round robin playoff against each country’s champion. That’s what I was referring to as far as finals.

    • Xavier22 says:

Can anybody recall if the Mets did this with other players in previous winter league series?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

just devil’s advocate here, but if the plan is to get Gomez x number of at bats you can’t hold him out in the “regular” season hoping he’ll reach the total number of AB in the “post” season because you can’t be sure he’ll get there.

  2. realist718 says:

of course the Mets are gonna say that. I have a feeling talks are getting close and they don’t wanna risk one of the primary chips getting hurt.

    • roman411 says:

      I second the motion.

This sounds like a classic trade move by the Mets. Let’s just hope we have a news conference by week’s end.

P.S. Anyone think it would be wrong to post a large banner outside the SNY studios which read:

      “Cerrone/Mazzone ‘08″

      ?

      • mrose says:

        i’ll vote for em..

gimme the pin to wear too!

      • Joe Bacci says:

I think DJ would be the running mate.

        Cerrone/Short ‘08

        God i miss DJ’s pre-game posts.

        • sheaheykid says:

true that. thinking of DJ’s posts made me think of april, may… warming weather, hope, excitement… i think one of the best things about the collapse is that at this point it forced me to say to myself, “easy… this team and this game is supposed to be about how fun baseball is”. whether or not we get santana there will be baseball in 3 months. happy day

        • KinersKornerman says:

          Well said

  3. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I dont think this means a trade is done or close to done I just think it means gomez will be involved in a potential package and omar doesn want him to go out and have some freak injury and suddenly the twins say “oh well, sorry no santana for you”. that would be pretty irresponsible on omars part.

  4. air23ac says:

gomez has been mentioned as part of the deal for months now……to think this is just precautionary is a little naive……they must be getting close to finalizing something, or at least think they are close enough to not want to hurt it

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

well I guess they are closer, but Im not taking this as the deal is done and theyre just sorting out the physicals or the mets are in the 72 hour window. I mean yea hes been a potential part of the package for months but they cant just sit him all winter and stunt his development.

      • therealsince86 says:

Well all accounts say that the trade will occur in the next 7-10 days. Why risk Gomez getting injured during that time regardless if you are sure the trade is going through or not.

  5. CaseStreet says:

If we get Johan, I’m naming my first son after him.

  6. mrmet it is says:

    Whats a bigger upset:

    Giants defeat Pats

Mets trade for Santana without giving up F-mart???

    • mrose says:

      giants defeat Pats

    • Jova1931 says:

Quite honestly, I’d rather see the Mets not trade any of these guys. I know they’re just prospects, but think about the consequences of a trade for Santana.
Who will the Mets have in the outfield beyond 2008? Alou? Schnieder?
What about pitching-wise? Perez (potentially), El Duque & Pedro will be free agents. Plus, not to mention the fact that with Santana, the Mets will be a bit limited with their finances as far as signing free-agents.
Whether or not they get Santana it’s a big risk.

      • bigchart333 says:

oh God….you can always pick up some vets, or try to sign someone in the off season, like Adam Dunn…and don’t gimme that “he cant play defense” crap cuz while it’s important, i’d think a guy hitting 40 HRs and 100rbis a year is a lil more important

      • jimrebel44 says:

If Pedro proves healthy, say he starts 5-1, do we start talking about giving him a 2 year extension?

        • Xavier22 says:

Word of caution: Pedro started 2006 5-0 before he got injured.

That aside, I think it would depend on whether Pedro feels comfortable in a #2 role. I think part of the reason he left Boston was Schilling taking over the “ace” role. Although, Schilling is a bit of a sphincter, so it could have been personality issues.

I think if Pedro is healthy and open to an extension, the Mets should offer him 2 years at $20-22M, with incentives if he pitches over x number of innings.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think you are right, but a lot depends on Pedro. What is he willing to accept. Something like 12 a season with bonuses for innings should work but for Pedro who knows. I would assume he wants to finish his career as a Met but if he is low balled he will take off. Maybe he would feel more secure with a 3 year contract for 30 million and bonuses. That would take him through age 40 at which point he would most likely retire. We might get stuck with Pedro for a year or two, but we are used to that and it has not hurt us so far.

        • CaseStreet says:

Pedro would def like to end his career here. He’s not the type to care whether he’s #2. He wants to win and to share his knowledge. I hope we get to keep Guerra. Imagine him coming up in a year or two with Johan and Pedro as his mentors. WOW.

  7. krumbledkookie says:

You know, when/if Gomez gets traded, I’ll miss him being on this team. We only got to see a bit of him last year, but the kid shows a lot of promise, and I looked forward to watching him develop into a really good major leaguer. But at this point, do whatever it takes to get Santana. And soon, please!

  8. air23ac says:

you can find an outfielder much more easily than a HOF cy young ace…case closed

    • Jova1931 says:

You’re not just giving up outfielders, you’re giving up pitchers also. Of course you don’t know if they’ll be any good and Santana is proven, but you’re still losing potentially 3 good pitchers (not to mention the Santana contract). That’s what worries me.

      • HOFMets57 says:

All 3 pitchers might not even make it. They could all turn out to Kyle Lohse’s. Journeyman with 5.00+ ERA. We have a chance to acquire the best starting LH pitcher in baseball.

      • therealsince86 says:

You are losing 3 potentially bad pitchers as well. You have to give to get.
As far as them not being able to be replaced, that is spoken like a true small market fan. There will always be FA to replace some of these guys, especially OF.
Besides we have the draft picks to replace some of them already as well as Omar’s influence on the international market. Or system will be bare for a couple of years at most.
I would assume that out of the 3 FA pitchers (Pedro, Elduque, Perez) there is a good chance that we resign all 3 to some role and a great chance that we get 2/3.

Back to the small market reference. Why would Santana’s contract limit the Mets? I mentioned this yesterday. With Reyes and Wright being stars and cheap, as well as Church/Gomez/Endy (who ever is left) in RF we have excess money to spend on pitching compared to most big market teams. We have plenty of money to spend on the likes of Tex or CC next season regardless of Santana.

        • therealsince86 says:

Also, you can not look at the fact that you are paying Santana an extra 20-25 million. You are paying him an extra 10-15. If you sign an average pitcher on the market RIGHT NOW (not to mention next year or the following 5 seasons) you will have to pay 10-15 million. So I for one would not worry at all over paying 10 million more to get Santana over Loshe.

        • Jova1931 says:

I hear you. That’s a good point. So I’m assuming you’re thinking that the Mets will give up Martinez and not Gomez?

        • therealsince86 says:

No not at all, it may take both. I am just saying I don’t think it will be Gomez and Curch. Either way the starting RF for us this year will be cheap compared to most large market teams.

        • Jova1931 says:

See, if we give up Gomez and Martinez it would trouble me. I’d like to think we can keep one of those players which I think is a possibility.

        • therealsince86 says:

It’s possible but not likely. In the Twins eyes would Church/Heilman replace Gomez or Martinez? That is the question that would have to be ask. I would rather give up Gomez and Heilman and hang onto Church and Martinez myself but……

        • Jova1931 says:

Heiman/Church might actually hurt us more now than in the future because you’d be losing a solid set-up man and the lefty bat we need in the corner outfield. However, for the future it would be a decent move but I guess at this point you’d have to be willing to give up what the Twins want most.

      • NickA33 says:

You’re right we are giving up a lot of pitchers but your description is dead on “potential”. Plus, per the MetsBlog report yesterday, you can see that we loaded up with pitching in this year’s draft.

I think the organization anticipates this trade going through and acknowledges that we’re loosing good arms. So, draft pitcher heavy and hope they pan out. That’s the best thing they could do and it’s being done.

As far as future OF’ers go. Honestly, they’re a dime a dozen. We have a solid core of Beltran/Reyes/Wright. If FMart stays, add him to the mix. I’m not worried about our bats.

Without Santana we’re in a dogfight all year long. With Santana, we become the NL East favorites, instantly. This deal HAS to happen.

  9. air23ac says:

i am going to miss coming here every am for my “CUP of JOE-HAN” to start the day…..but at least there will be other topics to discuss..

i hope he is a met soon….and for the people out there who actually think the mets want to hold off on a deal because of superbowl concerns/taking the spotlight……no way….you do what you have to do, and waiting could leave you lost……if there is any angle to that any way, i think the twins would prefer it to happen now because the superbowl could deflect a little attention since they will have a pr job ahead of them as all teams who deal a star do…the team getting the star usually wins the deal at first, time tells if the other team got even, better, or robbed

    • AzMetsFan says:

If the super bowl was a concern, wouldn’t they do the deal but announce it at a later time?

  10. Nate W. says:

    1) mlb teams put limits on thier player’s participating in the winter leagues and pull them out at random all the time.

    2) its not unusual for a player in a winter league to keep on playing for his team when one mlb team trades him to another mlb team. He may leave to take a physical, and come back if the new team allows him to. But the winter league teams have no direct connection to a particular mlb team.

    • Jova1931 says:

It’s not the connection to the winter league teams, because none exists, it’s the timing. They never pull players just to pull them.
