i have talked with a few people today, people connected to all sides of the issue, and every person believes that a contract will eventually be reached between Johan Santana and the Mets…regardless of when an agreement is announced, i would not expect a formal press conference today or tomorrow

The following is a clip from ESPN.com, in which Mets GM Omar Minaya and 3B David Wright comment, or avoid commenting, on trading for Santana…

hey, someone get d’wright a towel

PeretzNYC January 30, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Why is David sweating?Did the ink not dry o his Vitamin Water deal yet?

stc85 January 30, 2008 at 1:53 pm

They didn’t come this far just to not sign him.

Pedro January 30, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Thats going to be awesome press conference

GravediggerHebner January 30, 2008 at 1:54 pm

When I saw that clip last night it scared the hell out of me. I’ll be so much happier when the ink is dry on the contract extension.

Metsgirl23 January 30, 2008 at 2:55 pm

I have been so happy all day because I’m so happy for our team that were finally going to show all those suckers who keep reminding of us and how bad we choked. I think we all will be alot happier when the ink is dry on the contract! I still have the worry in the back of my head that something could go wrong but I Know in the end it will be ok. So please Omar go get the contract signed already so we can really celebrate!

MrBotch January 30, 2008 at 1:56 pm

nice poker face omar.

Nails January 30, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Speaking of Omar, I stopped and realized last night that he has brought in Pedro, Johan, Ollie, El Duque and Maine – his entire rotation, one that is probably #1 or 2 in the NL – for some money, minor leaguers yet to make a serious impact, Xavier Nady and Kris Benson.

Not too shabby if you ask me.

boozermetsfan January 30, 2008 at 1:56 pm

david is trying to stay hip with the psuedo gelled mohawk look that’s sweeping the poser community.

Roach2 January 30, 2008 at 2:04 pm

No, what he has is a model girlfriend who is f**king with his sh*t

Hands off bee-atch…remember who brings in the cash load!

krumbledkookie January 30, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I don’t mind being patient on this, because I really don’t think that they’d work this hard for a trade and then screw it up fumbling over money or years. There are too many reasons to sign him and pay him, and no real reason to refuse to do so.

magic00700magic January 30, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Although I am celebrating the acquisition of Santana (and to some extent also mourning the loss of Gomez and the other prospects), I am concerned with what a high contract may mean to the Mets ability to resign Pedro and Perez.

If both of these pitchers walk next year (and El Duque retires), we are left with Santana, Maine and Pelfrey, and do not have the prospects to trade for pitching. I think both are worth resigning. Despite the addition of Santana, I think Pedro will remain the true leader and his effect on the staff and team is huge. I think we need to resign Pedro for at least two more years. I am curious if he would have issues accepting significantly less than Santana.

Similarly, Perez is a solid lefty. Sure he is not as consistent, but he still has ace potential and I love his “stuff” more than any other pitcher (including Pedro). I would love Perez to remain on this staff for the next 10 years. I don’t have a feel of what his demands might be.

Curious if you had a feel of the Mets on both of these fronts. Again, I know that is a problem for next year, and that I should enjoy this year, but next year will be here before we know it.

What does everyone think?

Nails January 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I agree, but I think you should enjoy this for a day or two, and then worry about that.

But, even if this trade means the Mets cannot afford Perez, they are still in a better position than yesterday b/c they have the #1 to anchor a staff. If they don’t make this trade, Perez becomes a must sign – give him whatever it takes – type of guy.

Now, with Johan and Maine, you are really looking for a 3 and 4 starter, and can be more confident and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I want Ollie for the next 5 or 6 years also (not sure about 10 … ) but this trade gives the Mets tons of leverage.

I could also see them taking Pedro’s money – sliding it down to Perez – and wishing Pedro a happy retirement / two year contract. They’ll have enough $.

Mister Koo January 30, 2008 at 2:03 pm

I would agree with signing Perez. But there is one problem. His agent. (Scott Boras). So if Perez has a good year this coming year, well, there’s no telling how much he’ll be asking for.

therealsince86 January 30, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Perez needs to be resigned immediately. Pedro, 1st needs to prove that he can pitch even 150 innings. Don’t forget that there is depth in SP market next year if need be.
I see next year’s rotation being the same as this year, however, with Pelfrey as the #5.

Charlie January 30, 2008 at 2:11 pm

This so damn annoying. People are either complaining that “Freddy Coupons” is cheap or that he has spent too much. Argh!

DjDeF January 30, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Mr Santana, Here is a blank check, be at the press conference on Friday, the address is on the check.

DjDeF January 30, 2008 at 2:00 pm

WHERE IS FIREMETSMANAGEMENT?

Charlie January 30, 2008 at 2:12 pm

or one a positive note, that guy that broke the story yesterday. remember, he had a friend that worked in greenberg’s office that texted him the deal before even nightengale broke it?

onteora January 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I just can’t believe that if Omar wanted to be greedy he could center a package around Martinez and Pelfrey and try and steal Bedard from the Mariners. FMart, Pelfrey, Church, Joe Smith???

Seriously though, this is as excited as I have been since the Mets swept the Dodgers the same day the Tigers knocked out the Yankees and Evan Roberts went crazy on the air afterward.

Martinez, Pelfrey, Rustich, Vineyard and three picks next year. I think the farm system will be quite OK.

Nails January 30, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Not sure that would be wise. With Johan, Maine and Perez (if they sign him ) they have good young pitching. They do need someone in the minor leagues – let’s not turn into the 2002 yanks here, man.

And from what I know – the M’s deal with Jones – is MILES better than the one you propose above. Jones is every bit the player FMart is, and is ready for the biggies.

boozermetsfan January 30, 2008 at 2:07 pm

does anyone have a pic of wright with his new spiky gelled mohawk so i can send to my sister for a goof?

Charlie January 30, 2008 at 2:14 pm

he also looked all sweaty.

onteora January 30, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Come on, it was a joke…im anticipating the arrival of the teenage hitting machine to shea

therealsince86 January 30, 2008 at 2:17 pm

There is no possible way. I am not sure that the package we sent plus Fmart could get Bedard. You might if necessary get Blanton or Snell for that package. Just not worth it. Pelfrey will be fine as the #5 next year. Just focus on resigning Perez and lets see how Pedro does.

Signing Johan does not really have any effect on the ability to get a pitcher next year. All you have to do is budget. Remember that if we don’t resign Pedro then there is the money you need to replace him.

MudvilleNine January 30, 2008 at 7:00 pm

If we’re really hurting for money by then, where is the money going to come from to give to Tex? Between us and the Yankees, his contract is going to be huge. I also say sign Perez now and Pedro will resign with us for 2 years.

metfansince65 January 30, 2008 at 2:10 pm

That smirk on Omar’s face says it all.

MetsUKfan January 30, 2008 at 2:29 pm

What I liked was the way Wright said Johan type pitcher.

:) There is a Johan type now? Santana isn’t even 30 and he already has a class of pitchers named after him.

Thats respect by your peers. A lot of NL batters are going to be beaten BEFORE they face him.

The Dotel Motel January 30, 2008 at 3:34 pm

To me it’s a no-win situation with Perez (even if they sign him). If you think about it, after Sabathia, Perez is probably the second best LEFT handed starter available on the free agent pool. If he pitches like he did last year – or BETTER – he is going to command somewhere between $50- $60 million I would imagine. Now if he sucks, what are the chances that Met fans are going to want to keep him? So to me, either way, Perez is going to demand a lot of dough.

Dwright5kiddflushing January 30, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Not only am i happy that we got the best pitcher in the game but what it also does for the rest of the pitching staf could be tremendous. Mike Pelfrey doesn’t have to have the pressure of living up to the “ace” expectation that he was faced with when the mets drafted him and paid over slot. And for Pedro, Ollie Perez and John Maine, Same situation…..They don’t have to be “the guy” for the mets to be successful. A lot of what this does is take the pressure off a lot of players of the new york mets. Also lets not forget, We get to watch Johan Santana in blue+Orange. Don’t know about you guys but i was so thrilled i didn’t get to sleep until 5′ O clock in the morning….Ok so maybe I am too excited.

therealsince86 January 30, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Imagine how much the Yankees will pay him?

therealsince86 January 30, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Although there are plenty of options including our own 3.
CC
AJ Burnett
Garland
Lackey
Smoltz (ha)
Jennings
Prior
Loaiza
Lowe
Morris
Penny
Prior
Shilling
Sheets.
I prob missed some and some of those names are not great but its a lot better than this years class. As I said, I still see us resigning Pedro and Perez and letting Pelfrey be the #5.
