…yes, things are quiet, but the two sides have been in talks for quite a while…regardless, the sense i get is that a deal between the Mets and Johan Santana will not be reached tonight…
…in other words, though people close to the team still seem confident that a deal will eventually be reached, it may take a bit longer than people connected to the player initially thought…
…Update…9:30 pm…
…from what i can gather, the guaranteed money and years is not what has held things up…the final hurdle most likely deals with final year of the deal, and whether it must also be guaranteed or be an easily attained option…
…my bet is it ends up being an option, but time will tell…
This morning in the Star-Tribune, citing ‘sources,’ La Velle E. Neal III wrote that the Mets are expected to give Santana a six-year deal that would pay him about $130 million.
…i have to believe that will be the framework – since it seems like common sense, frankly…so, i’m guessing that the two sides are haggling over how to get him that seventh year he had been seeking, and which Barry Zito got guaranteed a year ago…

they better close this deal…if they don’t bye bye omar
well, i think this acquisition is extremely crucial if the Mets want to continue to contend in the NL East, if not, Major League Baseball.
It is about time Omar decided to do something this off season and bring in some quality talent. This was a very slow and unproductive off season, besides the signing of Johan Santana.
Wow, great observation and contribution.
(sarcasm)
lol, i agree. valuable input.
Word
Seriously. I’m glad he “decided” to do something. He must have been on vacation or on metsblog this whole off-season and just realized he should go after Santana. It’s not like he went after Posada or even thought about bringing A-Rod over. And he didn’t even offer anything for Bedard. If he would have done his job right and brought quality over, we’d have Santana, Pedro, Willis, Bedard, and Maine/Perez as our rotation. We would’ve also signed Cordero and Wagner closing. Arod would be at third, Posada catching, Cabrera in RF.
absolutely not…
If…a big IF….the Mets do not sign Santana, it will be the Wilpon’s fault, not Omar’s. He pulled off an absolute steal with this trade. Even if we don’t sign him, we will, Omar stays.
I really hope they have a preliminary agreement by tomorrow — years and dollars.
here we go again. lol jk but get it done.
Just get it done. They know better than to mess this up.
We eagerly await the press conference and the orange and blue 57 jersey.
its so sad that i’m still nervous…is it possible that the twins back out…i really hope that once it was agreed to that they can’t…how can bill smith listen to all this of how bad of a trade it was for them…I can’t wait till this is done already.
The Twins cannot back out at this point. He is the Mets property until 5pm Friday. I am ecstatic about the deal..BUT, it is not official yet.
sounds good…i never heard for sure about that
Now knowing this i can’t really see how they wouldnt be able to come to a deal…i mean are they gonna let this go bc of like 10 mil…it’ll get done and if somehow it doesn’t they don’t deserve a single fan.
They can’t back out, they already agreed in a tentative agreement.
As a Met fan you got to be worried a little.
They can’t blow this can they!!!?????
These are the Mets. Anything can happen.
But until I see Santana donning the orange and blue with the number 57 on his back at the press conference, I won’t be sleeping easily.
i really dont think theyll blow it but if they do i dont want to say ill stop rooting for them but geez that would be the worse than anything any of my favorite teams have ever put me through.
Yea I have been celebrating all day and I keep knocking on wood so I don’t genixs it! So please Omar just get the deal closed please!
Does this franchise ever make things easy for us fans? I wouldn’t be surprised if they make us sweat until Friday, giving the media and anti-Mets folk out there every reason to try and take away a rare moment of triumph for us.
That being said, this WILL get done, or we as fans will NEVER forgive Omar, or the organization.
I know I wont forgive them. But I think they know they have to finalize this deal after it is so public. There would be no excuse. Especially after Barry freaking Zito got a guaranteed 7 year deal. Johan desrves the same. But based on Omars negotiations with the Twins I trust he may even walk away with a contract beneficial to the Mets more than Santana. He is proving why he gets such accolades in MLB.
It’s going to be the biggest contract ever awarded to a pitcher. My guess would be that something that big and complicated will take until Friday afternoon to finalize.
Everyone has to remember that this is a legal document not just putting together 2 numbers (years and dollars). There is a ton that goes into it.
LenF you are 100% correct. This is going to take some time to complete. I think Cerrone mentioned that earlier today. Realistically, we are going to see a press conference on Friday.
Of course the Santana saga still looms….
You have to believe that the framework of the contract was worked out well ahead of time. Everyone truly involved must have known the basic parametes.
Right now they’re probably just hammering out the details. Bonuses, incentives, perks etc. But it would seem rather irresponsible to not have the basic years and money ready to go before the trade happened.
Dead on. I know as Mets fans we’re prone to, err, panicking to say the least…but the Mets won’t screw this up. They knew what he was looking for before they got him, it’s not as if the organization is suddenly going to balk due to money at this point in time. It’s a simple matter of getting the details out of the way.
You’re right.
Has anyone looked at Beltran’s or Arod’s Deals? They go into incentives, hotel commendations, box seats at home games? suites at home games? Its quite ridiculous
yes lets also remember there will be things like suites on the road, no trade clauses…etc etc
…and all that stuff they wouldnt give A-Rod? ;)
That’s all fine and good. What will make me sleep confortably is some news that they have come to an agreement on core terms — years and dollars. It’s a bit more complicated than just that, because the years could be easily obtainable options, etc. But the bottom line is this: If the Mets and Santana reach a preliminary agreement on the core terms, the official announcement will follow shortly.
Can you imagine the fan backlash if the Mets announced that they couldn’t come to agreement with Santana and his agent?
Wow it would be scary to see how bad people are going to criticize the entire Mets organization if this deal goes sour…….that said I’m going to be optimistic and say that they will get this deal down because they don’t want to cause a riot.
I wouldn’t riot, I wouldn’t even complain, I would just completely write the team off.
You guys are the biggest bunch of whining babies ever. Are you really complaining that it is taking too long too sign this guy? You dont just work our deals where a guy is going to make 130 million over 6 years in an hour or two. It will get done. Shut up and stop crying. We got are man, just be happy for once.
wow, nrmax, this thing you type in, is called a comments section,
let the people say what they want
calm down bro
pleaz tell me u can spel “our.”
we got “are” man? that’s just. i dunno.
if the mets can’t sign him, don’t worry. Steve Trash-hell is still on the market.
Omar for Presidente
Forget Omar, if this deal doesn’t get done I’m blaming the exact same people I blame for the Kazmir debacle, the Wilpons. However, I’m not even going to comprehend the possibility of this deal not getting done until it happens.
I’m not nervous.
I’m not pacing.
I’m not saying the Rosary.
Nope.
I’m not.
I am nervous…
I am pacing…
When will this end…
We wait and wait…
Yet no word…
How much longer….
Isn’t worst case we have him next year and he’s a FA at the end?
No, he could veto the trade if no extension.
So then can’t we just ask for a bit of a longer time to try to sign him, i mean pitchers dont report for another two weeks or so….is he that impatient?
I believe the 3 day window is standard.
I heard someone sometimes they grant extensions to the 72 hours.
I took a 2 day power nap, and what a dream I had.
Somebody… pinch me
the only way i would ever stop watchin baseball for good if this contract isnt agreed upon, but i think it will, why make the deal unless u know you got to give up an amazing amount. If santana is asking for like 8 years 200 million, and wont budge off that at all, then i can see the mets not signing him, but if it comes down to 10 million or an extra option year then i think i would stop watching baseball and start watching hockey and basketball(and i hate basketball and especially hockey).
Warning: Conspiracy Theory
Minaya and Santana’s agent Peter Greenberg had agreed to a deal before Minnesota agreed to the trade but are wait to announce so it does look suspicious.
1) Why would either party go through all of this without having a very good idea of what the final contract would look like.
2) Greenberg has a good working relationship with Minaya since he represents Endy Chavez and Jose Reyes.
So relax, it’s a done deal!
:-)
typos:
are waitING to announce so it does NOT look suspicious
Let me add to your conspiracy theory. The Redsox and yankees colluded in pulling their offer. Cashman and the sox GM talked at that dinner they attended and agreed on pulling thier offers for Santan thus giving him to the mets. They both wanted to keep Payroll down while keeping their prospects.
I’ll sleep fine tonight… but if this time tomorrow a deal isnt in place then I might be thinking a different story. I know most of us are still refreshing this blog and their favorite websites for updates on when it’s all really “final”….
Also, how weird was it that USA Today broke the initial story…. that came out of left field (no pun intended :) — I dont usually monitor them for “breaking” sports news, but I guess I will now.
My guess is Matt is pretty well juiced into things and he might actually be the one to “break” when the official signing is in place. God knows I keep checking at least 10 different websites for such updates…. :)
Keep the faith Met’s fans…. Omar and company will get it done.
not that weird that it broke on USA Today
Bob Nightengale has been around baseball forever and has lots of relationships with agents and executives. I don’t see it as any more unusual than Gammons, Rosenthal, or Stark breaking a major trade.
wasn’t it actually broke on here by some guy who got text messages from his buddy?
Yes it was. That guy got creamed for that. Nobody believed him yet an hour or so later it got announced. Not blaming anyone since I didnt believe him myself but he deserves an apology and a thank you. So, sorry and thank you.
this will get done.. if it doesn’t, boycott opening day
It better get done, I mean what else do we have to watch….the Knicks?
um,,, are you forgetting the nets?
Wow I’m a genius. How did I mess up an ellipsis.
don’t… be… so… hard… on… yourself.
As the Pope asked Michelangelo;
“When will it be done?”
I really hope they don’t have to go 7 years, but if they have to they have to. This is the best pitcher on the planet today,
Watch Pedro Martinez out pitch Santana, never doubt Pedro.
ya know, I wouldn’t rule out two stellar seasons from the two of them based on how competitive and good they are.
This is going to be great. I thought pedro looked good last year. If he’s healthy, he’ll find a way to own
Anybody see Glavine talking smack today? I mean I have a lot of respect for what he did for us, but he’d have been better off keeping his mouth shut for awhile after this deal…….. I don’t think he’ll be treated very kindly in his first trip to shea………I mean I’m worried about the Phillies offense, but I’m not that worried about the stinking braves, I don’t really see how they are any better than last year and now we’re significantly better.
Glavine said his changeup is better than Santana’s.
can’t wait to roll Glavine’s words up extra tight and forcibly insert them into a certain dark place. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
Yeah, don’t you have to throw your fastball at least 85 mph in order to even have something considered a changeup?
Why am I on the edge of my seat until this gets done? Man, I’ve become paranoid about this team!
Thats a good thing.
My guess is 22 million per year for 6 years. What they are working out is the Perks now, you know a suite on all road trips. Skiing lessons for his wife etc.
He wants to be a Met. The Mets want him to be a Met. We want him to be a Met. HE WILL BE A MET!!!
RELAX

Agent: Scott Boras
this contract is heavy beltran wanted the best it is like the mets are paying him 19 million a year
That’s a heck of a complex contract
I’m expecting something similar to this for Santana, structure-wise
Plus, it probably took about this long, if not longer, to work out this deal for Beltran
Difference is, there was no heavy build up to this contract
Daaaamn Beltran is paid! Him and Johan’s salaries would be equal to the entire Marlins roster lol
either one by themselves equals the marlins roster.
not sure why you’re posting all these mets contracts. mlb contract are actually quite simple and short in comparision to other businesses.
i read that during his days with the mets steve trachsel had by far the longest contract. it was oddly lengthy.
let’s hope the mets aren’t trying low-ball santana. they knew his price and worth.
steve trash had a lot of riders in his contract.
they paid him by the hour.
and they paid him in pinot grigio.
Yeah, that looks a lot like my contract from my job…
Lets just hope the Mets Management doesn’t “collapse” on the back end of the contract talks.
I know I know, not funny.
No, that was very funny.
This deal would be done. My guess tomorrow and they’ll have the press conference at 4pm.
If they don’t do this deal and the Yankees end up getting him, Omar, the Wilpons, everyone working for the Mets will be driven out of town. Then fans in mainland NY and NJ will follow and they’ll have to establish the South Dakota Mets.
pedro’s
signed 4-year deal worth 53M thru the 2008 season on 12/16/04- he receives salaries of 10M in 2005, 14M in 2006 and 2007 and 11.5M in 2008- + he receives a 3.5M signing bonus that is payable thru July 2007- + 4M of both is 2006 and 2007 salaries and 2M of his 2008 salary are deferred at 5% compounded interest- + he receives a luxury suite at every home game at Shea Stadium and a hotel suite for all road trips- + the deal includes bonuses: 500K for his 1st Cy Young, 1M for a 2nd Cy Young, 1.5M for a 3rd win and 2M for a 4th win; 400K for 2nd place in Cy Young voting and 300K for 3rd place in voting; 50K for each All-Star appearance; 50K for each Gold Golve; 50K for LCS MVP and 250K for WS MVP- + the deal includes no performance bonuses- + he has a complete NO-TRADE clause- + bonuses he has earned: 50K for 2005 All-Star selection
Agent: Fernando Cuza
I have a feeling that by tommorrow night, they will get him signed, and have the news conference on friday because he was going on vacation and wanted to get done.
just want to say first time at this site and im already in love. im a die hard from va and everyone needs to let this thing play out. we will get our man. me personally i think we still need a 5 hole starter but am i being too greedy.
True. With Mike Pelfrey or El Duque pitching every fifth day we are clearly the 5th best team in the division.
I am saying it gets done Friday Noonish… If they were to have a press conf tomorrow the deal would be mostly done by 12:00 tonight. Which in doesn’t look like its gonna be. They’ll finish up the technical stuff tomorrow night and like i said Friday around 12:00
HAPPY HOUR ANYONE????
BTW: Imagine Pedro comes back to even 85% Pedro….Just saying scary…
How about a minimum innings in year 6 say (150) and/or a team option?
I cant believe their haggling – they knew what they were getting into in the first place – its the best pitcher in baseball – just get it done
Based on teh fact that the Mets got this conditional deal done, I’m fairly certain they have a clue when it comes to negotiations.
Have a little bit of patience? Don’t forget it was patience that got this trade made.
Santana gets seven guaranteed years with a six year extension. Are they talking a five year deal with a sixth year option or are they taking a six year deal with a 7th year option. I hope it’s a five year deal, because if the logic is he should have a 7 year deal like Zito, a five year deal with an option for a sixth year deal gets him there.
Chill. The deal will get done. You guys are sounding like Phillies fans. The Mets did the deal knowing they would have to pay, and pay they will.
Mets fans have been through the ringer since the end of last season so they had better pay the money and lock Santana up!!!!!!!
There is no way this is gonna be a 5 year deal. We knew from the beginning he wanted at least 6 years. Johan has all the leverage in this situation so expect 6 years at minimum.
well, i guess the issue is a six year deal vs. a five year deal with an easily attainable option benchmark. i think this is really about insurability.
Why does Johna have all the leverage?
Is he so certain a year from now there will be more teams willing to pay him?
Don’t forget, the Mets would absolutely be out of the mix at that point…
Johna has leverage, but not ALL the leverage. The Mets know he wants to play here.
Not sure why my fingers keep wanting to type Johna. Guess it’s like teh? 7 years of typos ahead…
jw but is it possible for us to keep his 13m for 2008 and be under contract starting in 2009? such as have him for 13m 2008 and 5yr after that oerpay suh as 24m per yr for 5 w/ a 6th yr player option so its possible to have him for 7yrs just different way to pay w/ a way out. or keep 13m for 2008 plain old 6yr after that oorrrr ordinary start the contract in 2008 6-7 year at about 22-23m a yr on average. opinion anyone??
Omar’s patience paid off amazing with the trade. Let’s hope is really patient with these negotiations and maybe we can save $10 million and a year.
No, but seriously…to all the Rounders people…Give that man his money!
Give the man what he wants. This team hasn’t had a pitcher this good since Gooden in ‘85.
Please get it done. Give him whatever he wants, who CARES!! I just want it to be official.
I just had a random thought, and not really sure how this works… In an article I just read it says the trade will be final upon Santana agreeing to a contract extension AND all players passing a physical….
Given the heavy favor for the Mets side of the deal could the Twins claim someone like Philip Humber (who is coming off Tommy John surgery) did not pass their team’s physical therefore they are revoking the trade?
I am not sure how the process works, but I am just wondering if that is a possibility? That would be an awful loophole and not even sure it is something to be concerned about, but I think given the media reaction favoring the Mets I wouldn’t be surprised for the Twins to try anything…
Any thoughts or knowledge of this?
If the Twins claimed that, then MLB would probably step in. They’d likely have an independent doctor(s) assess the player. It’s very unlikely a player will fail his physical.
In my opinion, Johan Santana is one of the few guys I’d try accommodating. If it’s Zito money, then so be it. Santana is better than Zito, he deserves the contract. If the Mets are iffy about giving him 7 years, just make that 7th year a player option.
Hahahahahahaha silly yankee fans think they can beat bostons pitchign staf with that cobbled up stall of thiers. Mussina is DONE, Pettite is what 60? Wang is thier only prayer. 2 rookies will choke, Hughes is overated. Bwahahahahahahahahah!!!!!
krusty….You are the one person on this blog that I never have to look at the name to know who wrote the comment.
You sir are a moron.
brilliant comment (sarcasm)
Pretty sure the guy was being facetious
I’m pretty sure I was just being sarcastic. Next time I’ll finish up my comment by saying: I was just being sarcastic.
yeah don’t ya love when people write “jk” after making obvious jokes?
I guess I know why people do that.
It’s all good. I’m sure everyone’s just a little worked up over this blockbuster Ruddy Lugo deal and can’t think straight…jk
