Read: Glavine and Victorino on Santana
By Chris Mazzone - Jan 30, 2008 3:45 pm

Braves LHP Tom Glavine, as quoted by MLB.com

“I don’t think this makes [the Mets] the class of the division. I think it puts them in a position where there rotation is much better and that was their biggest need. Within the division, I think you have three teams that can now not only win the division, but also the World Series.”

but, really, what did you expect him to say…

Phillies CF Shane Victorino, as quoted by Phillies reporter Ken Mandel, also at MLB.com

“I’m game on. Did they become the team to beat because they got one pitcher? I’m not going to say that.

“It’s one significant move, but we made four moves to make our team better.”

…it should be noted that victorino is counting on himself moving to center as one of those four moves…apparently Aaron Rowand was insignificant…but, i digress, game on indeed, shane…

Lastly, Jim Molony at MLB.com thinks the trade for Santana will reshape more than just the N.L. East race.

Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia, as quoted by Moloney…

“I was working out, and I said to a bunch of the guys I was working out with, ‘I’m glad that guy is out of the American League’ and everyone started laughing except for the guys that are in the National League.”

added to by Matthew Cerrone

…it must be the day of confusing quotes…

…i mean, what does I’m Game On mean…

…maybe it has something to do with that eggs and shoes quote from the Braves fanit’s like the rest of the league is speaking in some strange code...

Tom Glavine is a tool. I’m so glad he’s gone.

    • mikey_FF says:

      Yeah, a broken tool.

      • lisametsfan says:

What?!? Tom Glavine wasn’t DEVASTATED by the Santana deal?

        • mikey_FF says:

lol … no only a little disappointed.

        • anditsouttahere says:

i can’t wait till the mets play glavine. from the very start i knew he didnt want to be a met. he was always a brave. and hearing how well he deals with the media and carries himself. the only reason he was a quiet guy is because he didnt want to be a met. he stayed because of the money – really righteous. the one thing that helps us now, we know his every move. try coming back to shea and see if you’ll ever make it out of a first inning here again tommy.

        • FBones24 says:

life goes on for Tommy Glavine no matter what happens. What a loser.

        • BigHangWithEm says:

Of course he’s a loser, you think the braves got to 4 WS and lost, nay choked them all away but one by accident??

          4th Place Braves!!

    • starz31 says:

I can’t wait for Johan to show Glavine what a real changeup looks like.

I just hope our hitters don’t make Glavine look like he knows what he’s doing….If you watch his division games last year, the phillies and braves all just pounced on his outside pitches…

      • mikey_FF says:

Judging by Glavine’s age and experience, the Mets should tattoo him. They’ve seen him enough, that’s for sure.

        • Stems says:

Sooo according to Glavine, the team that has finished 3rd the past 2 years, lost 2 huge starters in center and short, is now a WS contender.

Who knew Glavine knew the formula for success all this time!

        • mikey_FF says:

He still thinks he pitched well in that last game of the season. Poor guy.

        • Hojy20 says:

Of Course the Braves are WS contenders, they made the best move of the Offseason. They signed Tom Glavine.

        • Stems says:

and we’ve all seen what a big game pitcher he is…

    • No_Brain_Willie says:

      Tom Glavine:

      200ip, 219 H, 4.55 era, 87K/68BB, .281 BAA

      Jason Marquis:

      191 ip, 190 H, 4.60 era, 109K/76BB, .256 BAA

Marquis is better than Tom Glavine, so Braves fans need to rethink how poor he really is.

  2. ToastyJoe says:

Man, those Phillies are chatty little bastards, aren’t they? Must be something in that tepid, filth-ridden tap water down there.

    • EastFallowfield says:

      Good one!

Yeah, Mets will show em, just like last year.

      • johnstearns says:

That’ll be fun, when Mets fans get around to having a rivalry with somebody besides the Yankees. And Chipper. In the meantime, enjoy your 10,000 losses.

        • EastFallowfield says:

That’s funny. Of course, Mets have lost even more games than the Phillies since they’ve both been in the league…

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Ahh our old friend East Fallowfield. If nothing else I applaud your use of the same screen name. Shows balls. Perhaps you should lend your big balls to your ownership/management.

        • gowrightgo says:

yeah big balls coming in here with your anonymous screen name. Put out your name and address fallowfield guy. That would take some balls

        • Andrew says:

The Mets have lost 1/3 of the games the Phillies had. Wtf?

        • EastFallowfield says:

          My real name is ‘gowrightgo’?

Sorry, all the Mets fans posts over on the Phillies sites were so classy I thought I’d come back for a visit.

        • itsmetsforme says:

i hate to say it, but he kinda got us here.

      • Stems says:

yep just like last year when the Phillies played mediocre ball and squeaked into the playoffs and showed how much they belonged there by getting swept.

if the mets were not the team to beat last year the Phils sure as hell arent this year.

      • ToastyJoe says:

Yep, last year, when the Mets still managed to win just as many playoff games as the Phillies. :)

    • TheMaineMetsFan says:

Yeah Chatty Bastards is right…. I don’t see how they improved at all…. Lidge is gonna get lit up in that park and there outfield got worse… Johan can shut them all up…. three 15 game winners… life is good….IN OMAR WE TRUST!!!

ps…. shut up glavine… your team sucks too!!!

  3. icedrake523 says:

To Victorino: Quality is better than Quantity.

  4. boozermetsfan says:

shane beefarino is also a big time tool. i’m going to enjoy putting him down when the mets run away with the east. i can’t stand that little weasel.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Here I thought I was the only one who sang Kramer’s “Beefarino” song in my head every time I heard “Victorino.” Well played, sir.

    • dave27 says:

Maybe this season the Phillies will get him an authentic helmet and not a little-league model from Dick’s.

    • Saltzy23 says:

I agree that the Phils and their fans should keep their traps closed, but so should we. Overconfidence is what screwed us up the last time. I LOOOOVE this trade. I could NOT be happier with the way it turned out. I’m also conscious of the fact that as of this second we are the 2nd place finishers of the NL East.that didnt qualify for the postseason. Talent and hope are great things to have, and Im glad we have a bunch of each right now, but these guys still have to go out there and win. No ones giving us anything.

That said….its a great day to be a Mets fan for the 1st time in what seems like forever…..

      Lets Go Mets!!!….

Man it feels good to say that with a full heart again…They owed this to us.

      • BigHangWithEm says:

no no … it wasn’t overconfidence, it was the gaping hole in Delgado’s swing and the inability of the Mets’ starters, especially Glavine, to be effective past the 6th inning.

Santana fixes the rotation and in turn the bullpen. Delgado, well, let’s just hope they left a little room in the Citifield foundation so we can take care of him a la Jimmy Hoffa at the Meadowlands!!

  5. AlexEscobars5Tools says:

On a seperate topic…am I the only looking forward to not reading Joe Blanton updates anymore?

    • bigchart333 says:

this just in, rumors coming up we’re going to trade f-mart and heilman to the a’s for Blanton

      • dave27 says:

Yeah, they will definitely celebrate not giving up their #1 prospect for the prize of the offseason by giving him up for half the pitcher the next day.

        And weaken their bullpen too.

        • gowrightgo says:

A move only Duquette would love

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

that just reminded me of when i was thinking oh man we got kris benson and didnt have to deal kazmir thats awesome and before i could finish my sentence well we know….

    • starz31 says:

Yea i hear that…we already have a joe blanton on this team…just alot smaller in size (maine)

    • Charlie says:

no, you are not. gosh, can you imagine if we had given up four prospects for that stiff?

  6. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

Glavine is a taint, aka grundel, aka chode.

  7. zen says:

it’s interesting: glavine is a 1st ballot hall of famer who was booed by braves fans when he left. now, he’ll be booed by mets fans.

can anyone else think of a player who was on that level and the media loved who received such comtempt from the fans?

    • ToastyJoe says:

Yes. His name rhymes with “Socket.”

    • ravi3 says:

Oh my…how sweet will it be if Glavine has to face Santana in his return to Shea?

    • BigHangWithEm says:

1st ballot HOFer?? I dont know. He got ALOT of milage out of a questionable strikezone. Notice how once Questec came into existence Glavine became extremely mediocre. Glavine is overratted. Smoltz, a stud. Maddux, a professor with pinpoint control. Glavine? bum emeritus!!

  8. chaseh says:

Glavine’s always been a class act, and he said the right thing here.

Victorino is smoking crack. Good thing the Phillies don’t have any significant lefties in their batting order. Oops.

  9. Metropoliben says:

I just got off the AJC blog, and can somebody rationally tell me how the Braves who still finished in 3rd after our collapse are a contender for the NL East, let alone the Series?

    • Charlie says:

what’s the old saying? hope springs eternal.

    • starz31 says:

Because they assume all their young-ins will instantly be good…which I just can’t buy. They have an over the hill staff and 3rd baseman. Do they have a bullpen? They have inexperience at short and CF. The only brightspots they have is 1B(for one year only) and at C. The two and only two positions they beat us in.

      • Hojy20 says:

Well Mark Kotsay’s good, so CF isn’t a problem.

Last night after reading the comments at Bearleaguer. I went to Braves Journal or whatever the main Braves Blog is to see their reaction. There wasn’t really anything on Santana, but the guy had done his predictions for Glavine, Larry and Kelly Johnson, they were ridiculous. They have no perspective. He predicted Larry would play 152 games, has that ever happened? He predicted that Johnson, who hit .272 last year in a surprise year, would hit .290. It was unbelievable.

        • BigHangWithEm says:

Kotsay stinks and is injury prone.

Hojy20 if you were being sarcastic, I apologize, if not … look at Kotsay’s #s, he stinks. BIG TIME

    • dave27 says:

They replaced Andruw Jones and Edgar Renteria with Mark Kotsay.

      Duh!

      • starz31 says:

I forgot about Kotsay…so i regress…They didnt replace Jones with inexperience but rather with a Moises Alou that can barely hit and plays CF.

  10. dave27 says:

Hey, congratulations to the Phillies, they won 89 games and got swept in the playoffs, yet they are strutting around like they are the Red Sox. And yet this was the same team that came into last season saying the Mets “hadn’t won anything.” Go figure.

I’d say game on too, but deep down Victorino has to know that Rowand out and Jenkins in is not an upgrade, and that Lidge might give up more homers than innings pitched in that yard.

Oh and good luck getting another few good months out of Pat Burrell. They should’ve dumped him this offseason when his stock has at least a pulse.

    • starz31 says:

yea I say good luck with that pitching and bullpen in that wiffle ball park. They better hope theyre offense scores 8 runs a game when Hamels isnt pitching.

  11. Chuck says:

Did I miss something? What has Braves done to be considered contenders?

  12. EastFallowfield says:

    From ESPN:

    The case for the Phillies

This may come as a shock to all residents of Queens, but we did find several bright, rational NL executives who still pick the Phillies.

Remember, they did outscore the Mets by 88 runs last year, whomped 82 more extra-base hits and drew 92 more walks. In fact, if you go around the diamond, how many positions are there where the Mets are definitively better than the Phillies? I’d give the Mets two — third base and center field.

The Phillies also catch the ball better. And would it really surprise anybody if the Phillies’ top two starters — Cole Hamels and Brett Myers — won just as many games as Santana and Pedro Martinez?

Finally, keep in mind the reason that one NL front-office man picked the Phillies — depth. The Phillies were deep enough last year to survive injuries to Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Hamels, Myers, Shane Victorino and Flash Gordon. And the Mets obliterated their system to make this deal, leaving them with “not much of an underbelly” if they have injuries. And everybody has injuries.

    • metsftw says:

      stark is an idiot.

    • Danny says:

Yeah, I always go to Jayson Stark for some unbiased Phillies reporting.

    • zen says:

and the following mets were on the dl last year:

      pedro (most of season)
      sanchez (entire season)
      beltran
      alou (most of season)
      green
      milledge
      gomez
      endy
      lo duca
      castro
      delgado
      valentin
      easley
      el duque

      • metsonfire says:

This is what worries me now…. our depth. that’s the only thing the Phillies really have on us now…. just a little better depth.

1.) We all know Alou will need or experience some “downtime” — Are Angel Pagan, Endy Chavez (who already “tweaked” something in winter ball), and Marlon Anderson really the type of players that can provide “meaningful” production ?

2.) Will Church really hit lefties enough to leave him in full time — and if not, are the options listed above decent enough to provide some punch?

3.) Now that Mulvey and Humber are gone – what happens when El Duque and Pedro need time off? There isnt much at the AAA level now to help you with and it doesnt look like Livan Hernandez will be picked up now.

4.) Is Easley really a decent enough backup for Delgado?

Im not freaking out (not after yesterday’s late christmas present) — but when I look at the Phillies roster I do prefer their depth in several positions.

        • gowrightgo says:

You will have Pelfrey and Sosa and….maybe Vargas having his elbow chips removed actually turns him back into a pitcher.

Its ok to be a bit thin in the rotation in my opinion when you have 4 guys that are pretty close to a lock for 14 wins in Maine, Pedro, OP and now Santana.

Throwing Pelfrey for a few weeks if needed is not bad. Hopefully we get the Pelfrey who ended the season not the one who started it.

Not for nothing but keeping Pelfrey rather than Humber from this deal may turn out to be the bigger deal than keeping Fmart and trading Gomez

    • starz31 says:

I’ll give him that point on depth..they did survive with depth last year…and we better stay healthy. But someone should also tell them that you need 5 pitchers and not just 2 in a rotation. So good luck 3/5 days phils. And our offense could easily have done that well in a wiffle ball park as well.

    • Charlie says:

Are we even having this conversation if the Mets win two more games last year? TWO GAMES! No, we are not.

      • ravi3 says:

Or even one more game vs. the Phils….2 come to mind–Billy’s blown save, when Burrell tied it up with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, and Marlon’s “interference” (for the record, that was the right call, but I feel likeumps usually don’t call it)

        • ghobot says:

i dont think people understand how the mets lost the division by the slimmest of margins. there are at least ten games in sept alone that would have made this a completely different story. hence, i am not worrying and i only see this making the mets stronger.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

sure the Phillies catch the ball better, but then the footrace to firstbase kind of gives the edge to the baserunner because throwing it over there is useless with hands of stone Howard.

    • jws366 says:

Did Stark forget about Endy Chavez, Marlon Anderson, Damion Easley, and Ramon Castro? Those are some prime time bench players. Remember our B+ team?

      • jamie says:

stark forgot that the Phillies play in a bandbox and that they had an amazing streak of good fortune to coincide with our bad. And where he got that they ‘re a better defensive team is anyone’s guess.

        • gowrightgo says:

that is true. They have 2 MVP’s because of that park. If Citi field turned into the same dimensions as CBP, then we no doubt would be looking at 2 40hr threats in Beltran and David Wright. Reyes would likely have 20 and the rest of the guys would increase their production by the same 10 – 15%.

Good for them …how many wins did that vaunted offense turn out for them? under 90 if I remember which does not mean they are a great team. Just a bit better than we were last year and just a few losses away from a .500 season

    • AppleInTheHat says:

If you REALLY want to compare the Philly’s offense to the Met’s offense, you have to compare how they play on the road. The Phillies play in a hitter’s ballpark and the Mets play in a pitcher’s ballpark. In 2007 in away games, the Mets batted .280, Phillies .268. Phillies had 97 homeruns to 94 homeruns by the Mets. Phillies had 442 runs to the Mets 437. As a matter of fact, most of the numbers are almost exactly the same. Except for stolen bases which the Mets led 106 to 69. Now what were the “experts” saying about the Phillies having a much better offense?

      • gowrightgo says:

        Great job looking into that!!!!!!!

Sounds like their offense without Utley for about 2 months and having a career year out of both Rowand and Rollins was about as good as our offense was without ALou for 2 months, a terrible Shawn Green, and a career bad year out of Delgado….

All things looked at objectively say that the two teams are pretty evenly matched offensively which is an argument I feel comfortable making

      • gameball says:

Thanks for that — i was about to look that up myself.

        So there you go.

      • zen says:

the mets were not a good home team last year. it’s hard to attack the phils for last year. they embarrassed the mets.

        mets runs scored/allowed:
home: mets scored 367 opponents: 376
away: mets scored 437 opponents: 374

        phillies runs scored/allowed
home: phils scored 450 opponents: 421
away: phils scored 442 opponents 400

the mets pitching was the same home/away. it was the offense that didn’t deliver. the phils offense delivered regardless.

of course, 2008 is the mets year

    • BigHangWithEm says:

I’m going to guess those executives are the geniuses that run the Reds, Pirates, Giants and well of course the Philles. Is Gillick still taking his nap? Someone should remind him it’s the offseason and he should start replenishing his team with major league talent.

Pedro Feliz, great, he wasn’t good enough for the last place Giants, he’ll be great in Philly, a strikeout, groundout machine!! Him and Burrell will make a potent suckfest combo.

Lidge? does he still get the dump sweats when Pujols strides to the plate?

Jenkins? He’s good. If it was still 2002!!!

Good luck and good riddance to the 2007 NL East Champs

  13. BMetsFan says:

This was not the only move that made our team better.

    OF: Church improvment over Green/Millege
2B: a full year of Castillo
    C: Schneider/Castro: improved D behind plate
SP: Santana HUGE improvement over Glavine
SP: Full year of Pedro is also an improvement over Glavine

Santana does more than just “improve our SP.” He reduces the load on the bullpen, and slots our pitchers into more reasonable positions. El Duque is now our #5 starter, and at times last year he was dominant.

I was one of the few who thought we’d be better than expected before the move. This was a bigger move than getting Pedro and Beltran. Good Job Omar.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

one way to look at it is santana replaces glavine and pedro replaces our 5th spot (3 wins i think?) figure el duque will regress and maine and perez stay the same its still a huge improvement.

  14. metsfanatic says:

Glavine should keep his big mouth shut. Let him do his talking with that breaking pitch he couldn’t get over the plate and that 83 mph fastball that looks like a beachball to most hitters. Good luck getting booed by both Mets and Braves fans.

  15. shamsky says:

Let’s remember that although we’re certainly better with Santana, we need Delgado to wake up and guys like Alou, Castillo, Pedro, Beltran to say healthy.

The Mets are not a lock to win anything, although we are certainly looking good if we stay healthy. That’s a big if. I’d still expect the Braves and Phillies to keep things interesting.

    • starz31 says:

      maybe the phils…the braves haven’t improved anywhere…

    • sincekindergarten says:

“The Mets are not a lock to win anything.” Dead on. Then again, I think that Mike Pelfrey, when he has to make the inevitable trip north, will be the Mike Pelfrey we saw in his second trip to Shea (3-1 in 5 starts) rather than the Mike Pelfrey that came north when the team broke camp in April.

Both the Braves and the Phillthies will stay close. But, with two 40+ year olds as two of the top three starters, the Braves are going to have their moments. Glavine will be around 10-10. He’s smart enough to make some adjustments, but his velocity just ain’t what it used to be. (Then again, I remember seeing him pitch a game in early ‘05, wheere he kept his fastball below 80 mph, saying that it had more movement then. He was right, as he won the game, giving up 2-3 runs.) But, his circle change is still a pretty good pitch–if he gets it over.

The Phillthies have a tad more work to do. They’ve got two pitchers they can rely on every five starts. Jamie Moyer is older than Glavine, Smoltz, or El Duque (the real age, not the “official” one) and will have a similar season to last year, which was 13-12. Moyer will lose more than he wins this year. I say, and I have no real idea, 11-14. Their offense is good. But, will Brad Lidge be the Brad Lidge of ‘04–or ‘05 to ‘07? I think he’ll be a lot closer to his ‘05 to ‘07 form.

      That’s why they play the games . . .

  16. AppleInTheHat says:

These other teams keep forgetting one important thing. We didn’t just add Santana to our starting staff. We didn’t just push every other pitcher in our starting staff back one spot. We are adding Santana AND Pedro to our starting staff in 2008. Everyone seems to forget that Pedro only started five games last year. He should start at least 20 if not 25 games for us this year. And he looked good in those five games. And he will be facing other teams #2 starter.

  17. x-nady says:

Glavine sounds as delusional as the Philies fan on Beerleaguer. I mean we still have to play the games, but since when did the Braves have enough to win this division let alone the World Series????

  18. shea_guevara says:

Right now, Glavine’s lecturing Braves fans on how they shouldn’t be “devastated” that the Mets got Santana.

  19. Minayas_Mets says:

Someone ask Tom Glavine if he thinks the Mets would have been in the playoffs if Johan started either of his two disasters during the last week of the season last year.

  20. asimplemind says:

seriously though….it’s like Christmas with spoiled children…each fan/player/local media homer is looking at what the Mets just unwrapped and thumbing their nose.

    • HoJoWright says:

shut up Glavine. At least now we don’t have to worry who is umping behind the plate everytime you pitch. Johan is a True Ace

  21. dave27 says:

Great point by ESPN…I forgot that divsions are decided by position-by-position breakdowns.

And i’m sorry, but who are the Phillies starting at C, LF, and RF that are so head-and-shoulders above the Mets?

  22. Master Neo says:

Between trading for Santana and Glavine going to Atlanta, a lot of rankings for rotations said that we were at 9…speaking realistically where are we now, 3?

    • starz31 says:

We gotta be top 3. I don’t know about order…but I’d say us, D-backs, and Padres. Peavy-Young and Webb-Haren are both great combo’s. But I do like our 1-5 now…alot.

      • Mingo says:

Johann can hang with any other number 1 pitcher and he will win most of those games.
Pedro is at minimum a good number 2 pitcher. He is better than most team’s number Twos.
We match up really well with our 3-5 guys. Imagine Oliver Perez going up against someone like Chris James or Jason Marquis. We win this battle much more often.
Imagine pitching El Duque in the 5 slot against guys like Adam Eaton or Jarr Juergenns or whatever his name is. We pick up wins at the bottom of our order as well as at the top of our order. We match up better against every team in the league. Plus we now get to preserve our bullpen better.

      • gameball says:

I have to put the Sox rotation on a par with ours:

Johan = Beckett (until and unless Beckett shows that last year was a “career year”)

Pedro = Schilling (sorry, Pedro’s gotta prove that he can still pitch deep into games and deep into the season)

        Maine = Dice K

Ollie vs. Wakefield: Depends on whether we’re getting the good Ollie or the evil, train-wreck-Ollie.

Pelf / Duque vs. Lester: Who would you rather have no. 5?

      • kkwik22 says:

Are you forgetting the Red Sox? or are we just talking NL?

  23. pezao says:

I liked Pedroia’s comment best. The AL guys laugh, the NL guys say, “oh, crap.” And not only do they say it, they also do it.

  24. Mingo says:

Okay, so here is our golden opportunity.
When the Braves come to Shea, let’s see some signs with the Eggs and Shoes quote. Let’s see a section of guys dressed up as eggs and shoes in the stands. I mean, let’s not let them forget about it. I am sure that by the time everything rolls around, people should have heard this eggs and shoes quote over and over again.
This is one quote that has to be kept alive.
It would be nice to find an http://www.eggsandshoes.com site or something like that.

  25. Glavine: Just because the Braves picked YOU up doesn’t put them in the great position to get in the playoffs.

Hahha…They can’t take it, they are scared to death. Keep talking Sillies, you won just as many playoff games we did last year.

  26. MetFanInDC says:

Just heard on Sportscenter that the Mets are also in the hunt for Erik Bedard? Wow, is this true?

  27. smc says:

If you read Jayson Stark’s chat this afternoon, re: Mets vs. Phillies, he believed (and he usually speaks with statistics to back him up) that guys in contract years usually rebound. (he said this bodes well for Delgado. I say, don’t forget Pedro– he’s in that position as well.)

I tried (unsuccessfully) to ask Jayson about intangibles. Here are a few q’s:

    (1) Will the Mets “collapse” make them more hungry? ( I hope so…)

    (2) Does the acquisition of Johan, and, perhaps to some extent Schnieder and Church (those pesky, never-say-die Nats!) change the chemistry of the team? (Absolutely.)

    (3) If the Mets are perceived as the front-runner, does that put the pressure back on them again (Maybe), and bring back the Phillies underdog mentality (perhaps)?

    (4) Will the Phillies have that same energy/hunger, having come from behind to win the division in ‘07? (I think this means something- I think the Mets sat back after being successful in ‘06)

    (5) Will the fact that the Phillies got swept by the Rockies make them hungry/angry?

You can go on and on.

By the way, do you think Omar will sign a free agent, veteran OFer to back up Church/Alou/Endy? If so, whom?

  28. metsonfire says:

    Still need to consider vs. the Phillies the following depth questions;

    • LUNT101 says:

      1. Endy has proved that he is the perfect 4th outfielder for this team and you can’t underestimate that our emergency backup outfielder sitting in AAA, Angel Pagan, has 150 games of major league experience.

      2. No, I don’t think he will and this is why we need to sign a guy like Kevin Mench or (my personal hope) make a trade for Matt Murton (who is on the trading block in Chicago).

      3. Don’t forget we were able to keep Pelfrey. Past that, I agree with you but while we did give away Guerra, Mulvey and Humber, can you really complain? Besides, we have 3 early draft picks this year which should be used on 2 pitchers and a 1st baseman.

      4. Decent ENOUGH? Yes. It won’t hurt to play Easley at first once a week against lefties. If his production is anything similar to last season we should be fine.

  29. metsfanatic says:

Going back to Stark – We have 2 former Cy Youngs going 1 and 2 and have two 15 game winners going as numbers 3 and 4. Can other teams boast that?

  30. dap260 says:

Tommy Boy is correct when he says the signing of Santana does not make the Mets the class of the division.

It is the signing of Santana AND the removal of Glavine that make the Mets the class of the division.

Have fun golfing with Smoltzie in October.

  31. mad_mike says:

Let them all have their say now….we’ll prove who’s best on the field in April. This year will be more like 2006…Mets in a run away.

  32. Kalihan42 says:

Even tom glavine must recognize that Santana is a significant upgrade from…well…HIM. Smoltz and glavine are astedy but getting old and Hampton has become a DL shoe in every year. They do have significant production out of 1st base now, but I do not see them being all that competetive but who knows, they are the braves.

The Phils have more going for them, but I still like the way our team matches up. They can out hit us still, probably, but I am confident we can out pitch them now.

  33. LUNT101 says:

LOL @ Jayson Stark. First of all Hamels/Myers is nowhere near Santana/Pedro. Even if it was…that’s less than half of your games. We have by far the most solid pitching rotation in the National League. Phillies have an ace and 4 scrubs.

  34. GravediggerHebner says:

My feeling re: Phillies/Mets is I’m excited that for the first time in my life both teams are pretty good at the same time. I loved the intense battles between the Mets and Cards in the mid ’80’s and I look forward to a few years of a good back and forth I95 battle.

  35. wolverine193 says:

Johan Santana can actually pitch. Glavine’s whole career is as good as the umpire who is calling strikes behind the plate. That’s why his whole career is a farce.

  36. MetFanInDC says:

Trade talks between the Orioles and Mariners involving Erik Bedard are alive, though other teams remain in the mix if the Orioles decide to trade their ace pitcher, Andy MacPhail said. The Orioles’ president of baseball operations said yesterday that several other teams have inquired recently about Bedard. The Orioles have listened to inquiries for Bedard for more than two months, hearing from about a dozen teams. The Mariners, Reds, Dodgers and Mets were believed to be the front-runners.

    This from the Baltimore Sun.

  37. metsfansberealistic says:

just have to say two things

    1) I love this website

    2) Can’t wait for Tommy to come back to Shea – man, is he ever going to get tarred & feathered….

  38. robmenna says:

I CANNOT WAIT TO BOO TOM GLAVINE

    • cousinrk says:

The other teams in NL are so cute. Look at little Tommy the Brave. He thought I’ll go back home, we’ll have a great chance to win the East. Tsk Tsk, so devastating. And those fighting Phils, so adorable thinking they were ready to have a run of success. It was a nice thought.

I’d love for someone to ask the rocket scientist Shane Victorino, what 4 moves the Phils have made that made them better. You know if the Mets had gotten Brad Lidge they’d be yapping about how hittable he is etc…

  39. BMetsFan says:

Would anybody here do Martinez and Maine for Bedard?

  40. MetFanInDC says:

Interesting trade, but I dont know if I would. I would love to have another lefty, but I like Maine. I know Martinez is a great prospect, but he is still a prospect. It would be a tough call.

  41. Andrew says:

Hahahahhahahahha that Pedroia quote was the bomb!

  42. Helped Keith Move says:

Isn’t it cute how Glavine nips and nudges at the corners of the strike zone?

Isn’t it cute when he has his little baby tantrums where he gives his “angry look” to the ump?

“Doesn’t this guy know who I am?,” he thought righteously. “I’m Tom Glavine! I won 300 games! This ump must not know what pitching with slyness and guile is!”

He winced as the opposing team hit another base-knock safely into right field.

It was then that he proclaimed, “Aww phuck it, let me just give up 7 runs and go back to Atlanta.”

    • cleonsvan says:

Hey I have an idea – let’s give Tommy Boy a few bucks and send him on a very long cab ride…

      • starz31 says:

He already can thank us for knocking out his front teeth.

        • kkwik22 says:

Maybe if he decides to hit one of our players with a pitch this year someone can knock the rest of them out…preferably Ramon Castro…sorry i havent gotten over that game.

  43. metsizzle53 says:

first off can i just mention how entertaining it was listening to every single yankees fan complain today because we beat them at what they do best…i was on glavines side even after the huge loss untill i heard him not being devastated, a kid losing his leg to cancer is a devistation, but much more a tragedy, there are different forms of devistation and he let down a whole city and left and now hes crying about it cause his team is gonna get destroyed by the mets now…have fun coming in 3rd place…again

  44. keystonetom says:

I like Victorino, I wouldn’t mind if he was on the Mets. But he needs to shut up with the game on stuff.

  45. BSMITTYFDNY says:

    Few random thoughts:
    1) Glavine please shut the f up! I never liked you before you before you were a Met, while you wore a Met uniform pretending to be a Met, and I despise you more now that you opened your big mouth again. Why we ever resigned you when the Braves dissed you last contract is beyond me. The Braves will finish in last place.
    2) We better get Santana signed soon because until it happens I feel very anxious. Once he is signed we are instantly world series contenders and the only team I fear is the DBacks..
    3) The Phillies are freaking horrible. Rollins has a big mouth but he does have talent. Howard wouldnt have the same numbers hitting in Shea. The lost the heart of their team in Rowand and Pedro Feliz? Come on, really. Thats there big addition. Lidge? He has such an unstable psyche and will breakdown when he keeps watching his pitches sailing over the OF wall.
    4) There is a small concern with our depth which is why we need to sign another OF bat. Preferably a righty. I also urge Omar to still sign Livan Hernandez to eat up those 200 innings in the 5th hole. EEl Duque in the pen which strengthens it tremendously. Pelfrey to start in AAA and develop his second pitch. So I say sign Livan and maybe a Kevin Mench who can also back up Delgado at 3rd while getting some OF at bats as well. He has some good HR pop in his bat. After that we are all set and can tinker with the team in July atthe deadline if need be. Even consider trading El Duque at deadline for pitching starved borderline playoff teams who may over pay in prospects (think C and 1B) and help us replenish our farm

    LETS GO METS!

  46. skillsets says:

F Glavine. I can’t wait for the Mets to tee off on him.

  47. mrosey says:

Someone’s jealous. I can’t want wait for the first time he goes against Santana. Hahaha. “Maybe he does make them the class of the division.”
