John Donovan at SI.com says the Mets went from ‘non-factors’ to ‘an instant, and legitimate, World Series front-runner’ with the recent acquisition of Johan Santana.

Donovan writes…

“The Mets are giving away a potentially huge part of their future by trading four of their top seven prospects. But for what they stand to get in return — a durable, determined, soon-to-be 29-year-old lefty who has thrown at least 200 innings and struck out more than 200 batters in each of the past four years — this was nothing short of a hijacking by Minaya”

HAPPY JOHAN SANTANA DAY! HAPPY JOHAN SANTANA DAY! I love you too Johan Santana!

        • gowrightgo says:

Having reread the article I was remembering the smack that Hanley Ramirez and his bs crew in Florida were talking about ruining our season by beating us on that last day. They certainly did that.

BUT THE METS SHOULD MERCILOUS WITH THEM. POUND THE FISH INTO COMPLETE AND UTTER SUBMISSION. DESTROY THEM EVERY TIME OUT. THINK WHAT THE DEVILS DID THE RANGERS FOR 4 YEARS or WHAT THE NETS HAVE DONE TO THE KNICKS UNTIL THIS SEASON. WIN ALMOST EVERY TIME. STOMP THEIR FRIGGIN HEARTS TO DEATH. I CAN NOT WAIT FOR IT PERSONALLY. FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR….SANTANA VS SCOTT FRIGGIN OLSEN THEIR ACE.

I am so ready to extract my revenge on them this year. If we play em 17 times….I want at least 15 wins

  2. robmenna says:

    non-factors? What a moron.

    • Kalihan42 says:

Okay, yeah I missed that “non-factor” part. THe Pitsburg Pirates are “non-factors” I think it would be tough to call ANYONE short of the nationals in the East a Non-factor. Stupid. But Damn straight we are the front runners now!

    • Santanasmets says:

Non-factors is a bit much.. .they would of been contenders but now there favorites… its great

    • gomets6091 says:

yea, I took issue with that too. They were the best team in the National League for about 95% of the past 2 seasons, blow the division lead in the last 2 weeks, don’t significantly change their roster (Glavine -> Pedro, LoDuca & Green -> Schneider & Church), and somehow become total non-factors? Explain that one, please?

Still though, it’s pretty nice to have Santana :)

      • hot stove chef says:

Couldn’t agree more. I’d also add that the return of Duaner will be the second most significant change from the 07 to 08 Mets.

Lets just hope everyone stays healthy.

  3. pezao says:

    Would somebody please pinch me?

    • toomanyuniforms says:

The Mets’ website will gladly pinch you. It’s kind of amusing how they refer to the “possible” addition of Santana and how the Mets “still have their work cut out for them.” I mean, I know they can’t pretend it’s a done deal, but let’s face it, if they can’t sign Santana, Omar falls back down to earth, and Wilpon gets sized for a plaque in the Cheap Owner Wing at Cooperstown, which is out back near the temporary toilets.

      • nrmax88 says:

You cant really blame Omar if they fail to hammer out a deal. He got the guy everyone wanted and if a deal doesnt get done is it either because Santana is asking for something so ridiculous it just isnt responsible for the mets, or because Fred doesnt want to pay up. Omar has done his work.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I agree wholeheartedly, but the public has a very short memory, and he’ll be lumped in with the Wilpons, right or wrong. He’ll have to be out there making statements about how the deal wasn’t right, etc.

Anyway, I don’t even want to talk about that scenario. It’s not going to happen, and it’s depressing to think about. . . .

  4. Kalihan42 says:

    Damn straight.

  5. Mitch45 says:

I’m not getting happy until I see Santana’s name on a contract. I’ve been a Mets fan for far too long (since ‘72) to get my hopes up prematurely.

    • Kalihan42 says:

Snatana wants to be a met. The mets want to sign him. They are willing to go 6 years. It is just working out the details at this point.

    • metskelly says:

I think really at this point it has to happen. For a few maine reasons.
1.) The Mets have gone too far to go Back
2.) Santana Wants to be A Met
3.) If the Mets back out now theyll look like complete fools.

  6. AmazinAgain says:

I love johan santana and am looking forward to seeing the one to punch of two of the best strike out pitchers of this era. However, one thing worries me after this deal. Our injury prone LF worries me alot not because he is injury prone but because our back ups(besides chavez who willie doesn’t like to start) include Damian Easley and Jose Valentin(both coming off of bad injuries) and Angel Pagan. Since we dealt Gomez, Milledge, and lost Green and only got Church in return i’m starting to get worried at our lack of depth in the OF.

  7. LUNT101 says:

    Food for thought:

If Pedro were to start the first game of the season in Florida, the rotation for the first 4 games would look as follows:

    3/31 @ FLA – Pedro Martinez
    4/01 @ FLA – Johan Santana
    4/02 @ FLA – John Maine
    4/04 @ ATL – Oliver Perez

Most teams, including the Mets last season, only use 4 pitchers the first cycle through the rotation because of the day off. Will the Mets throw El Duque against the Braves Apr. 4th or do they go back to Pedro since he will have had his 4 days rest, as they did last year with Glavine/Pelfrey? If they let El Duque pitch, Johan would start the Home Opener against the Phillies. However, if they decide to let Duque’s turn come the second time around, Johan would instead pitch the finale of the series in Atlanta. That would make the Atlanta series rotation: Perez, Pedro, Johan. How good would a sweep IN ATLANTA be as we come back to Queens to take on the Phillies? On the other hand, we may throw El Duque to finish up the Atlanta series and have Johan for the Home Opener against Philly which would be just as sexy.

One thing that is nice to notice as well is that either way, OP is pitching the opener against the Braves and I think that’s great news since he owns them.

    • LUNT101 says:

“Will the Mets throw El Duque against the Braves Apr. 5th******”

    • Syracuse Mets says:

So we either get to see Johan make Chipper look like a complete idiot, or make Jimmy Rollins look like a 7-year old stepping up to play tee ball for the first time…Seems like a win/win to me.

      • Metsgirl23 says:

Its not Chipper its LARRY! but I hope Johan makes Larry look like a complete idiot! After he is a Brave so

        • euchreking says:

Can we please stop the “Larry” chants?! This guy uses that as supreme motivation and he absolutely kills us at Shea. Let sleeping dogs lie!!

    • gomets6091 says:

if it works out that way, I’d much rather have Johan pitch against the Phillies. These Braves aren’t the same Braves of 1997-2005 who just absolutely OWNED the Mets (actually even further back than ‘97, but that’s when the Mets started becoming relevant again). Guys like Wright, Reyes, Beltran, etc. aren’t intimidated by the Braves the way Piazza, Alfonzo, Leiter & co. were.

The Phillies, now, are another story. They absolutely embarrassed the Mets last year, and you have to think that’s sticking in these guys heads, even if they won’t admit it. Johan wasn’t around for that, so they certainly ain’t in his head. He’d be pitching the last home opener at Shea in front of a packed house who wants nothing more than to see the Phillies pay for the abomination that was September, 2007, so the atmosphere would be ELECTRIC, and you know he’d want to make an impression. Not to mention, the Phillies dominate righty pitchers but struggle against lefties…it seems like a matchup made in (Mets)heaven

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Exactly. This team needs to knock out a few Phillie teeth early on. Obviously, an April series is hardly a “must win”, but the Mets’ psyche could really use a series win to begin to eradicate any lingering effects of the collapse. Imagine the difference between a Met sweep and a Phillie sweep — will have repercussions that last a month or more.

    • x-nady says:

Johan starts the Mets Home Opener…

  8. DaveSchneck says:

hijacking…….yeah, that sounds about right. I still cannot freakin’ believe we got this guy without A: Giving up anyone off the major league roster, and B: giving up our best prospect. 3 months ago the speculation was that any team that hoped to get this guy would essentially have to gut their farm system. It feels like we gave up very, very little, to get a very, very lot.

  9. Philnym31 says:

So anyone speculating when a deal will be struck .. tonight, tomorrow, or Friday? I just cannot wait till the press conference. It is going to a monumental day in the history of our franchise.

  10. Kalihan42 says:

I would not be surprised if they are hammering out the details already but I expect we’ll hear rumors of what the deal is tomorrow and have it officially anounced on Friday, after a physical.

  11. DaveSchneck says:

In retrospect, if the choice would have been getting Zito last year or having that $$$$ available to obtain Santana now, I’m sure glad we passed on Barry.

  12. twinstalker says:

Well, the board was so busy last night I couldn’t get my comments in. Congratulations, Mets fans, on the acquisition of Santana. Know that it takes a really bad GM to put a team like the Twins in this position, and another bad GM (if the first is going to quit) to exacerbate the situation. You should feel really lucky that we in Minnesota had or have both.

    • nrmax88 says:

Egh. Quit the whining. This isnt the “rip off” everybody says it is.

      1) The twins had 3 trade options. Maybe 4 or 5 if the LA teams got involved.

      2) Teams are only paying for one year of Johan. It really isnt worth your best prospect for one year of a guy. If you lock him up once you obtain him, you still are only paying the Twins for one year, he would be gone from Minnesota a year from now regardless.

      3) He wants a ton of money and you have to pay him to finalize this deal. Some people might say that is a privilidge, or bonus, I say that it is a burden. You could have fetched a lot more from Santana if he didnt have a NTC and wasnt demanding a 6 year 150 million dollar (or something) extension.

You will also be presently surprised with Gomez. I think he will eventually be a better player then Hunter was, and he will already show Hunter like ability to track balls down in CF. Guerra also has true star potential. I am not sold that the Mets even win this trade. As far as the next 3 or 4 years, it is a no brainer, but Gomez and Guerra can both turn into elite players.

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Wow. Someone who is upset we did not get the rights to the best pitcher in baseball for nothing.

      • MM1 says:

        nrmax88

I’m a huge twins fan and couldn’t agree more with you.

Thanks for the kind post and not pointing the finger going. nah nah nah nah nah! LOL

Good luck with Johan – he truly is a treasure to watch.

        I stick with my prediction 22+ wins – 250+ K’s.

  13. bennyb363 says:

lets shove it in the phillies face for all the crap they talked to us last year, we need to, as fans, show them who are the bad boys of the east now baby. lets interview rollins as many times as possible about santana and se how he likes it. We will talk smack all year and shove it phillies face

    WHO’S WITH ME

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I dunno. I don’t think we have anything to shove in their faces until we beat them. Be confident, head down to CBP and take everything they throw at us, but let’s not kid ourselves. We need to be the season champs, not just the off-season champs before we start thumping our chests.

That said, apparently, you can lose the division one year and still say you’re the team to beat. . . .

      • Metsgirl23 says:

I agree with you with toomanyuniforms we don’t have anything to shove in their faces, but I have to say once this deal with Johan is offical for the Mets I think thats some thing to shove in their faces and show them that were ready to start a new season with our great 5 starting pitchers! Then once the season really starts and we play the Phillies and the Braves and we beat the crap out of them then its really time to show whos going to be in charge again but instead of them getting the divison title we’ll be getting our title back! You just have to know already that Phillies and Braves hearing that we are so close to having Santana with us their scared already! Go METS!

  14. bennyb363 says:

WE ARE THE BAD BOYS OF THE EAST

  15. twinstalker says:

As for whom we received, I believe it is trash. Well, let me put it another way: these players are like all the rest of the top 30 players in the Twins farm system. It’s currently not a system of top end players, but they’re all Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, and Guerra. So take the top 34 players now and jumble them randomly. That’s the Twins rankings.

We did not have an FMart. We did have the ability to get one two players who, when combining ceiling with probability of reaching it, were better than FMart.

We got neither. We got squat. We didn’t even get Martinez.

This is a Terry Ryan failure at its root. He was an awful GM wrt any dealings on the major league level. It appears his right hand man, Bill Smith, wasn’t exactly shouting sound advice that Ryan ignored.

Congrats again. You owe us one.

    • Toshea says:

Twinstalker, Thanks for the congrats. We know the feeling very well when we lost Seaver. Kazmir for V Zambrano also. I hope you get what your owed one day. We just finally got ours. But 4 average prospects are better than 2 Unknown prospects. We read that santana and his agent forced smith to do this by tuesday and he did. Dont put all the blame on the gms.

  16. itsmetsforme says:

i bet Jose is already working on a little Johan victory dance.

    • kkwik22 says:

that should be part of his contract…a personal handshake with the stolen base king Jose Reyes…Who Wouldnt agree to a contract with that?!

  17. Kalihan42 says:

Agreed. There is no way even Pedro with his ego thinks of himself as the ace of this staff at this point. HE has more class than to make an issue out of that.

  18. LetsGetMetsmerized says:

besides — johan pitching opening day lines pedro up for the home opener, which makes more sense for him anyway as the local hero

  19. sheabren says:

I am glad to be a Met. That’s always been my dream,
