Buzz: O’s Make Attempt to Sign Bedard
By Brandon Eddy - Jan 31, 2008 10:28 am

According to a report on MLB.com, the Orioles have made a last ditch effort to sign LHP Erik Bedard to a multi-year contract approaching $100 million.

‘Citing sources close to the Orioles,’ owner Peter Angelos called Bedard to discuss a five-year contract.

If an extension is not reached, it appears the Mariners and Orioles will finalize a proposed five-player trade which includes Seattle prospect OF Adam Jones.

…i have a feeling that peter angelos would not be a popular person in fantasy baseball leagues…i mean, other than the Miguel Tejada deal recently, does this guy ever pull the trigger…he would be the type of fantasy player that will let your trade offer sit there for weeks without looking at it…or rejects everything you send without a counteroffer…

…good call, brandon…though, i think some O’s fans would go as far as to say angelos runs the team like he’s in fantasy land…

…it’s interesting that both bedard and santana are in a mad scramble right now to work out contract extensions…i hope neither is eyeing the other, because i am looking forward to all of this being done with…aren’t you

If they didn’t steal the Browns and their first ever Super Bowl win, I might actually feel bad for the people of Baltimore for having to deal with this guy.

Oh, and if NYers didn’t have to deal with the Dolans.

    • metsfan227 says:

You have to be kidding about stealing the Browns, right? After what happened to them with the Colts and all the stupid Tagliabue comments you really can’t begrudge them the Ravens.

  2. whynot says:

That’s a real good deal for Bedard money wise. But does he really want to play for the O’s forever? It’s rough in Baltimore in the foreseeable future.

    • MacD81 says:

Seriously. It’d be near impossible to turn down that kind of money, but man, what a miserable franchise that must be to play for.

      • ebfnyc says:

why because their spring training Jersey is all orange like prison uniforms? or do you think they all get nervous everytime chad bradford scrapes his knuckles on the mound with his patented, “bro im only here for the gimmick,” delivery.

    • jspicyn says:

Why is Bedard a)commanding a package even close to Santana’s, and b) commanding money even close to Santana? He’s older, his track record isn’t even close (his only great year was last year, and he was out the last month or so – check the numbers) and I’d be much more worried about Bedard not living up to expectations and/or breaking down. Very thankful we have Johan and this is not even a debate. Bedard does not have the track record.

      • metsfan227 says:

LOL…he’s older…by one week! I agree with your basic point but I think you have to leave the age thing out of it. How about:

They’re the same age but only Johan has really proven himself to be a bonafide ace.

  3. ravi3 says:

If he pulled the trigger on Miggy back in ‘06, we’d have a certain Mr.Oswalt at the front of our rotation…while that would have been great in 2006 and 2007, I think I’ll take our chances with this team going forward

    • ebfnyc says:

mr oswalt must own a farm near our closer. i wonder if he hates the mets too. or is it just general hick distaste for NY?

  4. pvhornet05 says:

It feels weird to read something not related to Santana.

    • NewYMets says:

Damn right… isn’t it nice not to have to worry about getting an ace? I could give a flip about Bedard now…

That is, as long as we get the Santana deal done…

    • ebfnyc says:

what does that mean, “other than Santana.” the first rule of fight club is dont mention things other than santana.

  5. Angelos just can’t keep his hands off. It will be interesting to see how long Andy MacPhail lasts as head of baseball operations. What a sorry time for Orioies fans.

  6. napes22 says:

Peter Angelos is one of the most inept owners of all times.

    • ebfnyc says:

he can own. he only has to press one button like George Jetson. Owning is easy. You press and release. Also sometimes you exercise your finger to loosen it up and then back to the button.

  7. GetsByBuckner415 says:

If I were Bedard I would not take that contract b/c Angelos is a turd and the Orioles will never be able to compete with the Yanks or Sox…I do not care how much money he offers…my competitive side says go for the ring. At least in Seattle, you have a shot to win the West and make the playoffs…the Orioles are already thinking about 2011.

    • jspicyn says:

Well if $ 98 Million was staring you in the face and all you had to do was sign your name, I don’t think you’d care if you were playing for the Iraqi National Team. You’re signing that piece of paper.

  8. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i would absolutely hate to be a blue jays or orioles fan (forget the rays their a lost cause) bc it would really just take a ton of luck with developing players to ever really be able to compete with the sox and yanks.

    re: gipper913 (from: Santana Is The Talk Of Baseball);

he had asked where I was [blogwise] before the Johan situation…

in a deep Mets depression along with the others that brought the poll down to 6.1 (relatively
    ugly girl levels).

It all started in Sept. when we had lost our final game. My NYY friend knowingly asked if I had a tear in my eye. Ah how he always wants the best for me. Of course there was a tear.

Then denial sets in (Oct-Dec). If somebody says “Mets,” you feel like Joe Pesci, picking the guy up by the collar and turning to Robert Deniro and saying, “I know this guy didn’t say Mets.”

Finally, the Johan Santana winter meetings broke my computers refreshing capabilities from overuse.

On my way to the gym two days ago, I refreshed my iPhone (refresher still works there), “METS AQUIRE JOHAN.” Chills began take over my body.

Finally we had a guy with more mental poise that (four-walks-per-inning) Perez. He also has more natural talent that Maine, might even be younger then El Duque, isn’t wearing a Braves shirt under his Mets uniform and doesn’t dis his team–all off-season–from his farm down south. He also probably doesn’t steal the cross-town closers song or blow important games.

Professor Reyes, teach our man Santana some Spanish so he can fit in. Thanks.

I’m probably totally crazy, but I note that there wasn’t a big overlap between the Mets offer to the twins and what was purportably their offer to the O’s for Bedard. Why not take a shot at the double play?

    • ebfnyc says:

there is only room for once ace of base probably. how many egos on one team (not that johan comes off that way but you need an ego to be good) i guess without millege 3 less.

  11. MDMetfan says:

Angelos isn’t afraid to spend money he just doesn’t always spend it wisely (sound familiar???) Alberty Bell etc. Bedard is good and if his head is into staying in Baltimore at the right price, then they would have to be nuts not to sign him. SInce I live down here and go to about 10 O’s games per year, I wouldn’t mind seeing Bedard stay an O if the Mets can’t get him. He was my personal first choice for the Mets out of the winter saga that hopefully has ended.

  12. rogasm says:

So, what stops the Mets from offering Fernando Martinez, Heilman, Church, and Gotay for Bedard?

    • ebfnyc says:

gotay would stop it. he would say he doesnt want to go.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

As much as I like Bedard, this scenario would leave not only the Mets’ minor league system completely barren but would create multiple holes on the major league team as well.

      • rogasm says:

That would create one hole, RF, from what I can tell. Losing Heilman is a hit, but there are other guys to step in, including El Duque. Also, the Mets system is already barren, besides Fernando, and he is 2+ years away. Not a big deal when you have multiple first round picks coming up.

I know this is a pipe dream, and will never happen. I guess I am just getting greedy! HA.
