How can the Yankees be ranked over the Mets? Last year they couldn’t even make it through the first round, and their team has made no improvements over the winter. Their rotation is weaker than the Mets’ and their young pitchers are unproven.

They are giving the Yankees way too much credit based solely on their past accomplishments, which are nothing to crow about after the Mitchell report has come out.

The Mets should be co-favorites with the Red Sox or slightly behind them but ahead of the Yankees.

    • I agree, the Mets should be ahead of the Yanks, but the site does put the Mets behind the Sox, which I guess is fair at this point.

      Red Sox: 7:2
      Mets: 11:2

Seems reasonable at this point, although the Mets have a far easier road to the World Series.

Oddsmakers will pick the Yankees to be up there every year regardless of what improvements they haven’t made. It’s like Pavlov’s Dog, they’re just conditioned to do so…

      I don’t bet, so I don’t care.

    • The btj says:

The yanks get good odds for two reasons:

      1. They are the yankees and have been good for the last 15 years so people assume it will continue.
      2. they have so many fans that want to bet on them that the casinos makes the odds lower so the don’t get hammered when the yankees do what they did last year and make the playoffs.

My cousin and I were all over this move in the lines.

Right when the news broke we locked in the mets for the NL EAST @ 13-10, and the NL pennant @ 9-2.

By the next morning the were at 2-5 and 2-1 respectively .

First off, after 2006 and 2007 the Mets window is closing fast. Glavine, Beltran and Pedro did not help, so,lets hope that Santana is that missing part. I feel good about our chances, but, not YET as good as 2006. I want that confidence back again and then we will be in like flint. The RED SOX are done, they wont repeat, are you kidding me. These are the RED SOX we are talking about here. They find a way to loose. Im not saying we will win, but, I think we are the best in the NL. We just have to play that way ALL SEASON LONG!! Go for the throat and DESTROY the other teams we play. Leave them bleeding and licking there wounds as they leave the field. We need to make a statement and put the Phillies in there place second 10 games behind us at the seasons end!!! I am not even worried about the braves and there ancient rotation. We got rid of our dead wood and added some good pieces and kept the core of the team. A team that finished second by 1 game even though we sucked down the stretch. Think of it like this, if we play as good/bad as we did last season with the additions that we have made we will at least finish at 88 games and I think it may be closer to 90. LETS GO METS !!!!

Odds makers are skilled at making up numbers which will interest the betting community into making a bet. They are irrelevant in terms of real world predictions. Look at the super bowl spread. It should be about 3 TD’s, but it’s not because no one would take the Pats if it were.

    • As an experienced bettor, the lines on games are usually pretty close. The opening lines are more accurate as the lines sway depending on if one side gets more action than the other. Oddsmakers make their money on the vig and try to get an even number of people betting on each side to maximize the profit.

    • jspicyn says:

The Patriots beat the Chargers buy 9 last week, and the Jaguars by 11 the week before. How on earth do you think this line should be 21 points, especially after the Giants lost by 3 to the Pats just 4 weeks ago (and only the Pats had something real to play for that week)?? Your opinion is your opinion but it has no base, I think it’ll be a close game.

“Making up numbers that will interest the betting community” is the same thing as trying to make real world predictions. If it induces people to gamble their money, those people believe they’ll make money. So if everyone actually thought the Pats would win by more than 13, then everyone would put their money on that and Vegas would lose. They want opinions to be split.

  3. jamie says:

    so close…

  4. I’m surprised the Sox aren’t mentioned Though I think the mets should be the favorites, because the 3 American league teams have to get thru each other just to make the fall classic.

However I know as a fact, the Yanks won’t win due to the curse of A-Rod (2004 A.D.)which states that the yanks won’t win for 252 years because his salary was 252 million. However it is up to interpretation, as some experts believe that it will only last 175 years becasue the yanks didn’t pay for the entire salary.

    • Nate W. says:

nice! … I think that curse will keep the Rangers from winning as well, even though they exorcized him.

  5. Nate W. says:

and who left the Red Sox for them to drop out of being the favorites? Ortiz? Beckett? …?

nice to know the Mets are right there with them, as well as NL team can hope to be ranked.

  6. The Red Sox are actually favored on the website, at 7:2.

However, I agree, the Mets should be ranked as high if not higher than these AL clubs simply because they have less roadblocks on the way to the World Series.

  7. Bogod? Praise be to Santana Claus!

  8. Jaded1983 says:

Saying that the Mets are even a lock to win the division is a stretch IMO. They still need to get through injuries, and the season as a whole to make it through. I would not underestimate the Phillies and Braves, not to mention the NL West.

The Mets need to remain healthy this year, and hopefully not have the whole OF go down at the same time again. There are still a lot of “ifs” to the season.

  9. NickA33 says:

The Tigers, I can justify why they’re at 5-1 odds. Their off season additions certainly did help them. It amazes me that the Yankees are at 5-1 I mean, I understand they’re “The Yankees” and made a great run at the end of the season but c’mon, they’re not even defending AL East Champs and they’ve done NOTHING to bolster their team. Pettite? He’ll certainly help but the 3rd best team in the AL? Aneheim, ahem. Cleveland, ahem.

In case you’re interested Philly is at 15-1 and Atlanta is at 30-1.

The closest team to the Mets, in the NL, are the Cubs at 10-1 odds.

Boston is still the favorite at 3.5-1. Dare I say rematch?!

But that’s why they play the game right? We shall see….

  10. rockets212 says:

how are the skankees odds better than the sox? they are the world series champs and havent lost anyone important. I can see the mets odds are below the favorites but not below the yankees, because both the tigers and sox have a much better team than the yankees and the mets are obviously better than them damn skankees. they will have 3 unproven rookie pitchers who will be decent at best this season. Just pissed off yankee fans who know their are multiple teams better and want to hype up the yankees team by making their odds unrealistic.

  11. bY THE SAME TOKEN, THE tigers have one proven pitcher: Verlander, although he certanly is a top 5 starter in baseball

    • dave27 says:

      ????

      Willis? Bonderman? Crafty Kenny Rogers?

    • NickA33 says:

Are you serious? Their rotation will probably look like this:

Verlander, Bonderman, Willis, Robertson and Rogers

Zumaya as a set up and Jones as a closer?

C’mon, that rotation is sick. Much better than the Yankees and can probably go H2H w/ Boston.

It will all depend on how Willis adjusts to the AL.

      • metsftw says:

willis is terrible, rogers is 500 years old, and robertson is average. it is nowhere near boston’s. and zumaya won’t pitch until after the all star break. nothing “sick” about that rotation past verlander and bonderman.

      • Did anyone watch bonderman, willis, robertson, or rogers last year. None of them pitched well

  12. VCarver says:

Ugh … espn is reporting the Mets and Santana are far apart. I swear, it the guaranteed years become a sticking point and the Mets lose him, I will never forgive Omar and the Wilpons.

I hope this is just exaggeration on the part of their writers just so they’d have a story to hype.

The link is on their baseball home page.

    • dave27 says:

They aren’t losing him. Don’t listen to ESPN. Why would either side leak any of this?

    • NickA33 says:

Think about it this way. Omar’s job hangs in the balance this year, as does Willies.

With as much hype as this trade has gotten already, can you imagine the hype it would receive if they Mets DIDN’T reach an agreement?

Santana wants NY. NY wants Santana. A deal will be made. There’s no other choice.

  13. I think its going to be a sox mets series, in shea’s final year

    • dave27 says:

Am I the only one who wants the mets to turn the lights out on Yankee Stadium celebrating a WS win on their turf?

  14. metsomniac says:

i hope i have money left over from the beating i am going to take betting the giants to put on the Mets this season.

  15. chicothekid says:

Why is no one else mentioning the D-backs? After getting Haren, that put them at the top of the NL imo. I don’t much care for Webb/Haren in any series. Someone is gonna have a rotten time getting through them, although I have complete confidence we can do it, I’m surprised nobody is talking about them.
