Read: No Johan Tonight
By Evan Drellich - Jan 31, 2008 10:29 pm

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com is reporting that the Mets and Johan Santana likely won’t reach a deal before tomorrow morning at the earliest.

Stark describes the chances of the deal falling through as “remote,” but nonetheless possible.

…in other words, you can go to bed if you were planning to stay up for some late-breaking news…

    let’s get it done, guys!

  2. gem779 says:

I wonder what Johan is doing right now.

    • Nightlife says:

Preparing to sleep on top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.

      • gem779 says:

actually, I was wondering this earlier about his marital status, lol.

        from wikipedia

“He and his wife, Yasmile, who he has known since he was 9 years old, have two daughters, Jasmily & Jasmine.”

    • RichardK says:

      He’s like a baker… He’s waiting for the dough to rise :)

  3. Nightlife says:

Well, I guess this will pretty much dictate how my drinking goes this weekend. Either fun, loud and boisterous or angry, sullen and depressed.

  5. Metslife10 says:

This scared the crap out of me…All I read was Mets and Johan Santana likely won’t reach a deal …my heart skipped a beat. Think of our health before starting a sentence that way!

    Omar get r’ done!!!

  6. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

That’s the same exact article posted by Stark earlier, no?

    • Sebaz says:

Its the same article. i wouldn’t put any stock into it. ESPN trying to get hits in my opinion.

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

Isn’t this the same article that was posted at 12:30pm or so today? I don’t see any new info, other than the fact that ESPN listed it as being posted at 9:51pm?

        • metsfan501 says:

i wonder why Stark’s report is geting more credability than USA Today’s article when they were the first to break the story. Stark’s reporting seems a tad biased in its wording. Any one know if he is a Yankee or Red Sox fan?

  7. s-mets says:

The deal will be official at 4:59 pm tomorrow…just to drive us mets fans crazy…nothings ever easy rooting for the orange and blue

    • Nails says:

Would you expect anything different? I mean, I know the Mets and Santana want to get a deal done, but they want their deal. Why agree to less than your ideal before you have to?

It will be announced in the morning that they are close and they’ll have a deal by about 4.

  8. steiny says:

I don’t like the fact that the title is Sources: Mets likely won’t reach deal with Santana until Friday, if at all. IF AT ALL doesn’t sound too good. But ESPN is always prejudice against NY teams. They said A-Rod was going to Boston before. How did that turn out?

  9. starz31 says:

That 5pm deadline appears to be in Johan’s control…So if by then a deal is not in place…and I assume if not, then we’d be closed to deal at least and in that case I think the deadline will pass with everything being ironed out. I think he will only enforce that no trade clause if there is a big falling out between now and then…which i don’t see happening since both sides want to make this happen.

My only question is that if and when this deal is in place (preferably early) will it be made public right away? Or will they just wait until the physicals are completed which could take a few more days and at that point the Super Bowl comes into play.

    • metsdude13 says:

The 5pm deadline is set by MLB, however teams can usually get an extension for the deadline if necessary, unless the other team objects.

I would think that once the deal is reached, we will hear about it from the media, just like we did the trade. Remember, nothing has been “announced” by the organizations yet. The press conference wouldn’t be till at least Tuesday (physicals on Monday) – not a bad thing to wait until the superbowl insanity is done.

    • metsfan501 says:

The timing of an annoucement is tricky…Most likely tomorrow sometime. Santana takes his physical Saturday. MLB approves the trade. Press conference Tuesday.

  10. metballnut says:

If Omar doesn’t get this done, FIRE HIM AND BURN DOWN CITIFIELD!

    • icedrake523 says:

It won’t be his fault. He did the hard part of trading for him. This is a money issue which is all on Freddie and Jeff. They’re too cheap to cough up $20M more and too stupid to realize he’ll pay it back within a year. SNY will get greater ratings, more people will go to games he pitches, they’ll likely get in the playoffs for more revenue, and of course merchandise.

      • squad says:

Can we please stop with calling the Wilpons cheap? The Mets have the 3rd highest payroll, which is about to get even larger… and there is even talk of them adding Lohse too.

So pretty please, with sugar on top, let’s get over the Wilpons are cheap BS.

        • starz31 says:

We will have the 3rd highest…currently the fourth. I believe the Dodgers are higher right now. But obviously after this deal we should jump that.

        • squad says:

Holy crap… 3rd/4th… whatever. There are 30 something MLB teams. We’re in the top 5 spenders consistently. That means we spend more than almost every team in baseball.

        • jamie says:

for real…it’s demonstrably false, and if one keeps posting it, they’re advertising their own ignorance/prejudice/need-for-attention, and nothing more.

        • squad says:

Well, this is the problem. If someone keeps posting lies over and over again, eventually we end up with “Freddy Coupon.”

        • brukbowr says:

          freddy coupons

        • Charlie says:

no one seems to want to mention (while calling the wilpons cheap) that they are paying for the new stadium out of their own pockets.

      • icedrake523 says:

They are being cheap in this situation. They’re looking at it as $20M they’re spending. In truth it’s $20M they’re INVESTING.

        • squad says:

How are they being cheap? Should they just cowtow to whatever number Johan initially threw out there? That’s just stupid.

Johan is going to be paid an obscene amount of money. His agent had to expect there would be a certain amount of back and forth.

        • Charlie says:

          okay, for crying out loud!

          this is about insurability!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          five year deal; insurable.

          six year deal; not.

        • jamie says:

icedrake, you’re talking straight out of your ass. how are they being cheap? for god’s sake, the deal has 20 more hours to get done! why do you persist in being the hater?

        • darkstar73 says:

just wondering, but those people calling the wilpons “stupid”, do you really think you’re a better business man then them? Oh right…you’re a millionaire, you know business, excuse me…this is called a negotiation, a deal will get done, relax already.

        • metsfan501 says:

Agree. Since when does a $150+ million deal get done in 5 minutes. Be thankful, Santana’s agent isn’t Scott Boris. Speaking of Boris, Ollie Perez has him as an agent. After tomorrow, the Mets HAVE to try and lock up Perez to a long-term contract. The price fro starting pitching is so outrageous, almost every team is signing their young star players to long term deals. I’m sure Omar has this on his “To Do” list and soon. Ollie is starting to come into his own.

        • bayridgehodges says:

          Boras.

        • pedro4545 says:

          haha…definitely boras

  11. markthemets says:

did they stop negotiations for the night or are they gonna pull an all nighter?

  12. ED B says:

marty noble new article on negotiations

  13. wolverine193 says:

Pessimistic (realistic) Mets fan here, but I gotta imagine that Omar and the Wilpons are just using all this time to widdle down the price with the thought in the backs of their minds that they will give in to Santana’s demands if it reaches the 11th hour. I have absolutely NO faith the Mets front office, but even I can’t imagine that the Wilpons would be so stupid as to completely enrage the Mets fan base to the point of rioting. The consequences could be a PR armageddon

    • squad says:

I seriously do not get comments like this. Why do you have NO (with emphasis!) faith in the front office? I don’t get it.

This is still a business and the Wilpons/Mets owe it to themselves and the organization to try and get the best deal they can. This is nothing out of the ordinary, this is par for the course for a delicate, albeit large, business transaction.

The deal will get done. Give it time.

      • starz31 says:

I know it takes time…but I just want closure.

      • wolverine193 says:

I just don’t trust the Wilpons (no caps, you happy?) Whether it be Vlad’s back, the Kazmir deal, cutting corners with the likes of Matsui, Cameron, Mo Vaugh, etc. Granted, Fred has gotten much better with the spending, but that was because attendance was lacking and the team was starting up it’s own cable channel. Now that the team has had record attendance and Citi Field is certain to be sold out for a couple of years, I don’t think its completely out of the realm of possibility that Fred, in his own insular world, could find a way to weasel out of a deal, blame Santana for ridiculous demands (like AROD) and then try to get the fans on his side. I don’t think that will happen, but I’ve grown to be very wary of Mets ownership.

        • squad says:

You do realize everything you mentioned happened roughly 5-7 years ago, right?

Since then the Mets have: outbid everyone for Beltran (and if anyone believes the BS that he would have taken less from the Yanks you’re an idiot… Boras clients always take the most cash), they totally overpaid for Pedro, they gave Wagner a huge 4 year deal, they took on the salaries of Delgado and LoDuca, signed, then resigned Glavine, etc.

Fred’s business is the Mets. Maybe I would buy your theory if he owned a team that didn’t share its market with one of the most successful franchises in the history of sports. But what many don’t realize is that Johan = $$ for the Wilpons. Shea, and CitiField after it, will be sold out EVERY SINGLE JOHAN START. That’s a lot of extra hot dogs, beers, and score cards. Johan jersies will be flying off the racks. Further, this signing will almost singlehandedly wipe away any memory of “the collapse” and should make the Mets one of the best teams in the NL, if not baseball. That means he will be cultivating new Mets fans… fans who may have become Yankee fans.

From here on out, every Cy Young he collects, every Gold Glove he wins, and heck, with a bit of luck and longevity, he could even enter the Hall as a New York Met. All of these things add tremendous value to the Mets franchise.

You have to remember, Pedro is likely gone next season. This means they need Santana because he is a draw, just like Pedro is a draw. You’ll always have butts in the seats on days he pitches… even if it’s against the Pirates. Heck, I blew off a softball game to watch him pitch last year against us.

So, in short, I don’t buy these theories that Wilpon is content to spend enough to build just enough interest to turn a profit, because in the long run the fans will become hip to this, and there is another option across town for people to turn to… an option that always spends and always wins. Johan Santana is good for business… scratch that, he’s GREAT for business.

Don’t mean to pick on you… you just happened to post. I see posts like this all the time… and you are far from the main culprit. At least you back up your theories with some credible information.

Anyway, Google “Sabernomics” and read the article on Johan. He’s going to generate us a ton of cash. The guy who writes the blog estimates he is worth about $23 M a year. Check it out.

        • starz31 says:

well said…We all here outside of the team assume that ownership is running around with their head cut off…For all the reasons you give as what Johan will bring, and they all are true at minimum, those are the reasons why we are very nervous this will fall apart. Nothing is official yet and that is what is driving us crazy…We just have to trust that Omar and the Wilpons will do the right thing because we really have no control over the situation.

This is such a big deal, such a big player, such a big move for our team we, I, are all very nervous…

        • squad says:

I have to be honest, this: “For all the reasons you give as what Johan will bring, and they all are true at minimum, those are the reasons why we are very nervous this will fall apart,” makes no sense to me.

          Maybe it’s late.

  14. HLSMets says:

    ***KNOCKS ON WOOD***

Over/under on Santana throwing the first Mets hitter?

Can’t believe we haven’t discussed this yet. Or maybe we’re all thinking it but I’m the only one stupid enough to verbalize it.

    ***KNOCKS ON WOOD, AGAIN***

    • pvhornet05 says:

I go with the latter part of your statement.

Hey Matt maybe you did jinx the deal with Santana in a Met uniform.

    • Charlie says:

i have thought about it for three months, but wanted to wait until he donned the mets cap first. i have absolutely no doubt that he will be the first to do it…and, why not opening day against the marlins down here in miami? man, i can’t wait for opening day!!!

    • Steve In Tampa says:

Over/under on Santana throwing the first Mets hitter?

I’m going out on a limb here and say Maine will toss the first Met no-no…He almost pulled it off twice last year, and I see him have a breakout year

  15. Dill3stDRpapii says:

I Would like to hear what Luis Castillo’s take is on Johan, obviously hes going to be happy and hype about the deal. But i want to see what’s castillo’s Perspective of Johan & what he will bring to the table.

    • nrmax88 says:

It would be amazing if Castillo came out and said Johan was being greedy and to slow his roll. He has to make a choice, does he want to play for a winning team (and still make an obscene amount of money), or just make the most money regardless. IF its the latter, go back to Minnesota, play out your last year and maybe the Giants will offer you your 200 million. I honestly would think it was awesome if Johan gets to greedy and a deal doesnt get done, and he goes back to the Twins and blows his arm out and never throws a ball again. I will be cheering for him if/when this deal goes through, but I really dont like the guy anymore. All he did was complain about the twins all year, hold them hostage all winter, and tell them when to trade him and pretty much where. Johan, you are not even a free agent, if you want 170 million wait til you hit the open market. If this was A-rod we would be hearing from all these idiots like Gammons etc. how A-rod is a cancer and all this. I would have gladly rather spent 300 mil on Alex then give Johan this type of money.

  16. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I was optimistic but now I dont know. God why are they doing this to us? Is there really a possibility that the deal falls apart? I am going to be sick if this doesnt happen. Anyone want to meet me on the Brooklyn Bridge at 5pm tomorrow to jump if we dont get Johan? He wants us, we need him. What is the freaking problem! 20 million is really the hold-up? No trade clause? 20 mil is nothing when you are talking about the best of the best and why would we ever trade him anyway? Come on Omar and Fred, stop messing around. You guys have no idea what the fallout would be if you fail. No idea. There will be mutiny!

    • squad says:

What is wrong with you people? Hasn’t anyone bought a car? Negotiations take time. And since this kind of a negotiation is infinitely more complicated than that of haggling over whether or not a free month of OnStar will be included with the purchase of your Toyota Camry, it’s going to take some time.

I suggest cracking open a beer, watching a flick, reading a book… whatever. This will get done.

    • wolverine193 says:

I think it will get done, but I understand your cynicism.

    • nrmax88 says:

If Johan wants us so bad (which is absolute BS, he wants money, dont let anybody fool you into thinking he has some sort of connection with the MEts, because he doesnt care at all. If he did, why wouldnt he just sign for 5/100. Still a ton of money. He is being greedy, no doubt about it. If a deal doesnt get done, it cannot be blamed on Omar, he brought in the guy everybody wanted. It isnt responsible to just give in and offer him whatever he wants so he doesnt leave. And Omar isnt signing the checks, so its not ultimately his final decision.

  17. cyclone says:

Ugh…this fan base is full of such p*ssies….will you relax? It’s going to get done.

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

I love guys that sit at a computer and name call like that . Would love for you to call me that in person. Love it. Hide behind your PC though. Its called opinions and we all have them. because I’m nervous it doesnt make me a p*ssy.

  18. TheCommish says:

    i’m freaking out man

    • Nails says:

Guys – just go read Heyman’s post, read Noble’s article and stop paying attention to anyone from a network that employs Steve Phillips. Seriously.

  19. Krispy says:

Thanks for the heads up to sleep tonight. I thought I might be redeveloping my insomnia. Which, by the way, started because of Scott Kazmir and a player (which shall remain nameless) running off the field never to be seen again.

  20. Ryan Synagogue says:

    Ayy relax guy…it’ll get done.

Freddie um SpendPon will come through for us, just like he has since 2005.

  21. FlaMetFan says:

Seriously guys, have faith. it will get done. I will be there opening day watching Santana smoke the marlins… I love it!!!

  22. SeriousMetsFan says:

    Guys,

Chill out. This report is from ESPN’s Jayson Stark, who says the stumbling block is the length of the contract. Meanwhile, over at SI.com, Jon Heyman says that the obstacle is the money. Which one do we believe? Heyman or Stark?

When negotiations reach this point, where are the reporters getting their info? What is their source? Oh, I see it now, Omar Minaya and Peter Greenberg are face to face, trading numbers and counter-offers. Suddenly Omar looks at his watch and says, “Excuse me, Pete. It’s time to call Jon Heyman with an update.”

I mean, really. This WILL get done. Have a little confidence.

  23. five-seven-fifteen says:

Long time reader, first time poster here. I just heard on the local CBS news station (WCBS 2) during the sports segment that the Mets and Santana are ironing out the details of the contract. I dont know if this was already about the earlier posts by Matt that the final year was holding up the talks or brand new information given to the reporter on the spot (It seemed he was JUST getting breaking news in his earphone as he spoke). Just sharing something I saw and heard on TV.

  24. metsomniac says:

I have a feeling in the pit of my stomach of doom. Look, sometimes it’s fun being pessimistic… give your emotions a rollar coaster ride… with that being said it’s not fun when that rollecoaster track breaks and you go flying into the ferris wheel… Sign him now!

  25. Charlie says:

this is the kind of sh*t that really p*sses me off. jayson stark is a freaking shill of a reporter. he knows there are one million met fans sweating this out. he writes:

“The sources also left open the possibility that the talks could collapse without an agreement, though the odds of that appear remote.”

let’s examine a little closer, shall we? the conversation with the source probably went something like this:

stark: do you think this thing will get done?

    source: yes, of course

stark: so, you are saying it will get done, no doubt, 100%, take it to the bank, there is no way it can’t fall apart? is that what you are saying?

source: well, i mean, anything can happen until the ink is dry, right?

    stark: so, it can collapse?

source: like i said, anything can happen.

    stark: thanks.

then stark opens his laptop and writes:

“…sources also left open the possibility that the talks could collapse without an agreement, though the odds of that appear remote.”

this guy is a freaking joke. all in the name of page clicks, my friends. that’s all this is.

  26. metsomniac says:

I took some advice and read Marty Noble’s peice on Mets.com… it did calm me down a bit. key word being a bit.

    • Charlie says:

just read my post above yours. i’m sure that stark’s dark words were all in the name of page clicks.

      • metsomniac says:

yea as matt pointed out in an earlier post using the word “collapse” … give me a break he’s trying to color it to get attention

  27. darkstar73 says:

does anyone remember the Dice-K negotiations? These things always go ’till the last day. Both sides are trying to play their cards, trying to take the power position, but at some point (considering both sides DO want to make a deal) they will come together and agree on something. Santana doesn’t want to go back to the Twins, and the Mets obviously want Santana, so this will get done. There’s probably a lot of posturing going on right now, always happens like this. If you expected it to just get done immediately, you were wrong. There’s a lot of money at stake and neither side wants to compromise before it has to.

  28. espn has had the same ‘if at all’ headline since 12pm. I can’t even look at my ESPN MVP. I’d concentrate on SI and Marty Noble’s pieces.

  29. metsomniac says:

well either way it will all be over in less than fifteen hours i guess if we waited for months we can wait fifteen more hours

  30. click on my name it might help the time go bye

  31. GetsByBuckner415 says:

Just so you know Newsday has updated an article on the negotiations which states that an agreement will be reached, but will take the whole last until 4:59. The thing that scares me is that Jeff Wilpon is leading negotiations as per the article.

  32. hovanomics says:

Guys, we all need to relax. The Mets need to wait until the very end of the deadline to make this deal. A know it is hard to think about, but baseball is a busy and both sides wants this deal to happen. But if the Mets panic and sign Santana 1 hour into the deadline, what happens the next time a player like Santana becomes available? They would look like they give in a a players demand right away. When there is a “window” to agree on contact, but sides usually wait as long as possible, remember Matsuzaka last year? Boston waited until the last possible date to sign him and they had 30 days. If they didn’t sign Dice-K, he would have had to go back to Japan. So lets please put things into prospective when we want to go crazy about these things.

  33. metsomniac says:

you guys are the best…. so in my rare optimistic moment of unguarded joy… who’s celebrating tomorrow night when it’s all signed and delivered i’m planning to get sophisticatedly crazy in the city.

  34. sundaysection15 says:

i think the mets are gonna try to negotiate santana down as far as possible before the deadline tomorrow, and however far down they get him, will be the contract they give him. there is NO WAY they can let him off now. they knew what to expect for his contract and still worked for months to get him. and it would be such a huge PR nightmare for a team that many say is already playin second fiddle in their own city.

  35. mr.gee21 says:

Right now, Santana is writing his next Cy Young acceptance speech. He is also trying on his Orange and Blue pajamas.

  36. SUPERMAINE THAT HOE! says:

    alright but seriously…

  37. Nails says:

The Times has an optimistic article for the naysayers out there. I tried to post it, but must have failed.

  38. This whole extension thing has morphed into a very small do-over of the entire Santana trade process that preceded it; I’ve been reading the same article phrased slightly differently with varying degrees of pessimism or optimism over and over again. The problem is that despite being perfectly aware of this, and that the negotiations will most likely be successful and drag on until 4:59:59 pm this afternoon, I can’t stop doing it.
Logic really would follow that it is in the Mets’ best interest to let it ride as long as possible, as every minute that passes could be another 1,000 dollars chiseled off the demands from JS.

  39. TenTonHammer says:

Wow. There are so many nervous nancies in here you’d think everybody’s wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant.

People need to relax. Patience is the reason Johan Santana is even sitting at the negotiating table for us.
