The following clip comes courtesy of SNY, and features in introduction from the new host of Mets Weekly, Jocelyn Pierce:

The Mets are now 0–3–1 during this spring.
During SNY’s telecast of today’s Mets-Cardinals game, Kevin Burkhardt interviewed MLB.com senior writer Jonathan Mayo. A leading minor league expert, Mayo gave his take on a number of Mets prospects.
On Jon Niese, the Mets’ top lefty pitching prospect, Mayo said the decent numbers he put up last year belie his potential. Having come to camp last year about thirty pounds overweight, and put up mediocre at best numbers as he spent about half the season getting back in shape.
Once he was back in baseball form, he flourished down the stretch, and Mayo believes there is good reason to be excited about the lefty’s potential. Niese, who will start the year in Double A Binghamton, is scheduled to pitch in the Mets’ exhibition game tomorrow.
As for top prospect Fernando Martinez, Mayo said scouts outside the organization call the outfielder a “once in a generation kind of player”, with the only question being can he stay healthy enough to deliver the numbers he is capable of. If he can, Martinez, who will start the year at Binghamton as well, could well be in the Major Leagues this season.
Overall, Mayo said the farm system ranks “in the bottom phases” of the game, though there is still some talent there, including a lot of interesting talent really far away in the low levels thanks to GM Omar Minaya’s active Latin American scouting program. He also said the Mets have a number of good arms throughout the system.
Mayo also spoke about his newly released book, “Facing Clemens”, which includes interviews with hitters who dug in against Clemens throughout the righthander’s long career. You can order the book by clicking here.
Tagged Minors, SNY |Duaner Sanchez allowed one run on one hit while striking out one and walking one in one inning of work.
…and, admittedly, i was never a big fan of One
by U2…sorry…
Following his appearance, Sanchez told reporters that he feels good and he only missed yesterday’s outing due to normal, routine soreness.
Over at MLB.com, Marty Noble has some fun with the leap year and looks back at the Mets as a ‘franchise packed full of special extras’. He also gives his opinion on the 10 biggest stories in the history of the Mets.
Noble lists the acquisition of Johan Santana at number ten:
“Can the four-for-one exchange with the Twins be the Seaver deal in reverse? The impact of his acquisition is a story in the making. But his presence has allowed the Mets to focus on the future and turn away from their 2007 collapse.”
…on a mostly slow news day so far…aside from some new guy making his debut for the Mets…this article has some fun stories and memories that should help you procrastinate through the rest of your Friday…
In his first inning of work for the Mets, Johan Santana allowed three hits, including a three-run home run to Cardinals OF Juan Gonzalez.
…to me, the most noteworthy moment of the first inning was santana’s first-ever pitch, during which every single person in the Mets dugout – from players to coaches – all stood up at attention along the top step of the dugout to watch…
Johan Santana will make his first start for the Mets today, as the Mets take on the Cardinals during a Grapefruit League battle in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The game will air live, starting at 1 pm, on
.
Following Santana, expect to see Billy Wagner, Aaron Heilman,
Ricardo Rincon, Nelson Figueroa, Eddie Kunz and Duaner Sanchez, who told reporters he will pitch today.
SS Jose Reyes will bat leadoff, followed by RF Brady Clark, 3B David Wright, 1B Carlos Delgado, LF Moises Alou, DH Ryan Church, C Ramon Castro, CF Angel Pagan and 2B Anderson Hernandez.
Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez each threw a pre-game batting practice this afternoon.
…again, eyewitnesses say it looked like he el duque was throwing a Wiffle Ball, which is not surprising…
Hernandez told reporters that he does not feel 100 percent.
According to previous reports, Martinez intends to start on March 6 against the Nationals in Viera, Fla.
Tagged Orlando Hernandez |In a report by SI.com earlier this week, Nationals OF Lastings Milledge made a few comments directed at the Mets.
According to Newsday, the Mets not happy about Milledge’s comments, such as David Wright, who said…
“Enough is enough. You’re a Washington National now. Don’t worry about what happened last year or the year before that. Just go out there and try to help the Nationals win. It makes no sense to bash your former team. He just needs to turn the page and worry about helping the Washington Nationals. Forget about what we’re doing over here. Forget about the New York Mets.”
