News: Feliciano, Mets Agree On One-Year Deal

by D.J. Short on February 1st, 2008 at 8:52 pm

LHP Pedro Feliciano avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $1.025 million contract with the Mets.

…i’ve been sitting on this information for a few hours, but since the New York Post photoshopped Johan Santanas head onto Feliciano‘s body for their backpage the other day, i figure we owe him one…

…i love that, during all the hustle, bustle and chaos surrounding the Johan Santana negotiations, the greenbergs and the Mets found time to finalize a deal for feliciano…now, that’s multitasking

News: Mets and Johan Santana have a Deal

by Matthew Cerrone on February 1st, 2008 at 5:32 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal from FOXSports.com, during an appearance on SNY’s Daily News Live, Johan Santana is in the room with Mets representatives and his agents while negotiating what could end up being a seven-year deal in total, with an eighth-year option.

…next step has got to be a signature…

…sign, johan…sign

Update5:50 pm

…for what it’s worth, supper has been delivered to the negotiating table…i kid you not

Update6:02 pm

…seriously, this has to be a done deal, i would think…they’re not all together, in the same room, eating dinner, only to rip up the deal and go home, you know what i’m saying

Update6:44 pm

The Mets have issued a statement saying negotiations are complete and Santana is scheduled to take a physical.

…from what i can gather, the physical will be tomorrow

Update6:46 pm

i have reason to believe the deal is for a guaranteed six years, and $137.5 million…as expected, he’ll stay under contract on his current deal, but paid roughly $7 million on top of that…i can’t confirm that with people connected to the team, though…

Update7:02 pm

…santana’s agents also rep Jose Reyes, who has been invited to the press conference, which will almost certainly be next week…

News: Two More Hours

by Matthew Cerrone on February 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm

The Mets have been granted an additional two hours to negotiate a contract extension with Johan Santana.

…i have to assume this means that a deal was not actually agreed to by the 5 pm deadline…however, for them to peg down an additional two hours, it would suggest that they’re super close, and just needed some additional time to get it right…

…i have heard from a few different people that santana is in New York City, but not at the negotiations, though i have been unable to confirm that with anyone connected to the team

Buzz: If Deadline Passes, Extension Likely

by D.J. Short on February 1st, 2008 at 4:46 pm

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, via WFAN, should the Mets fail to complete a contract with LHP Johan Santana before today’s 5 p.m. EST deadline, they will likely be granted an extension.

Likewise, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com writes that Major League Baseball would ‘almost certainly’ grant an extension should the two sides fail to reach an agreement by 5 p.m.

Rosenthal quotes a source close to the negotiations as saying…

“We’ve still got a ways to go, but we’re in a lot better position than we were a few days ago.”

Buzz: Is that Your Final Answer

by Matthew Cerrone on February 1st, 2008 at 3:36 pm

…man, it’s been quiet, but things are picking up…i have not heard any one mention numbers or figures, but i suspect what has been reported by Jon Heyman and Jayson Stark is correct…frankly, i just want to know that this is all done, or at least heading in a positive direction…the numbers mean nothing to me…

…from what i can gather, the two sides took a break an hour or so ago, and upon their return the Mets would be getting a final offer from Johan Santana’s agents…

…my guess is that had the Mets been making the final offer, we should be worried…however, it’s the player making the final offer, which to me is a good sign…

…all i know is that the clock is ticking…and while people keep saying, ‘Don’t worry,’ i can’t help but worry

Read: Latest on Santana

by Chris Mazzone on February 1st, 2008 at 3:36 pm

ESPN’s Jayson Stark provides the latest update on the Santana negotiations, saying…

“The Mets and Johan Santana‘s agents continued to negotiate furiously Friday, as a 5 p.m. ET deadline to complete terms of a long-term contract bore down on them. And as that deadline drew nearer, indications were that the key sticking point continued to be Santana’s attempts to get the Mets to guarantee all six years of his contract extension, on top of the final year of his current contract.

According to baseball sources who have been monitoring the negotiations, the Mets’ best hope to resolve that disagreement would be to offer to guarantee the sixth season if Santana’s side would agree to accept fewer dollars per year.”

Buzz: Closing In On Six-Year Deal

by D.J. Short on February 1st, 2008 at 2:30 pm

SI.com‘s Jon Heyman reports, citing ‘sources with familiar with the talks,’ that the Mets and LHP Johan Santana are discussing a six-year contract which would pay him roughly $22 million a year.

According to the report, it is believed the Mets may add about $7 million to Santana’s $13.25 million salary for 2008.

Factoring in the additional salary for 2008, the contract could total $152 million.

Heyman writes that the players union has been pressuring Santana’s agents, Peter and Ed Greenberg, to surpass the $150-million threshold, in order to set the market for future frontline starters.

Heyman cites ‘people with knowledge of the talks’ as saying they expect a deal to be completed before today’s 5 p.m. EST deadline.
