According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, via WFAN, should the Mets fail to complete a contract with LHP Johan Santana before today’s 5 p.m. EST deadline, they will likely be granted an extension.
Likewise, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com writes that Major League Baseball would ‘almost certainly’ grant an extension should the two sides fail to reach an agreement by 5 p.m.
Rosenthal quotes a source close to the negotiations as saying…
“We’ve still got a ways to go, but we’re in a lot better position than we were a few days ago.”

Plus, I’ve heard Santana is campaigning for an opt-out after three years.

Major League Baseball almost certainly would approve a request to extend the deadline if the two sides are unable to reach an agreement by 5 p.m.
The Mets have offered Santana by far the highest salary ever for a pitcher — approximately $22 million per season. However, the length of contract remains an issue.
Santana, the source says, is adamant that he deserves a vastly superior deal to Giants lefty Barry Zito, who signed a seven-year, $126 million free-agent contract last off-season.
While Santana is not a free agent, he possesses unique leverage. The Mets have reached a preliminary agreement to acquire him from the Twins, and Santana can reject the deal by invoking his no-trade clause.
One prominent agent predicts that a six-year, $135 million extension would satisfy Santana. The Mets also could increase Santana’s $13.25 million salary for next season by including a signing bonus, increasing their seven-year commitment to more than $150 million.
The Mets would prefer to offer a five-year extension with vesting options for one or two years, but Santana’s agents, Peter and Ed Greenberg, want the additional years guaranteed.

MLB Trade Rumors is saying how Johan is campaigning for an opt-out clause after the first 3 years.
MLB radio just reported that if a deal goes down at 5pm (which they say should happen) we wont know until around 5:30ish

If they are granting an extension that means the deal is imminent. This also means this is going to happen.
