According to 1050 ESPN Radio‘s Andrew Marchand, LHP Johan Santana will likely make some small concessions in his contract negotiations because he wants to be a Met.

Looks like Johan wants to become a Met more than the Wilpons do ;-)
That’s really unfair. The Wilpons are offering Santana $110 million GUARANTEED up front and five full years. That’s not nickel and diming Santana, no way.
Notice the wink.
The Santana camp is just trying to get everything they can before they sign. That is what this is all about. At 4:59PM ET the Mets will announce the Deal is done and Johan Santana will be the newest Met! Get ready for the Press Conference.
I “m well aware that this is completely off the topic, but I propose that we bring back Mike Piazza as a right hand off the bench so he can both retire as a Met and finally get his ring. Whaddaya say?
I love the idea. Mike will always be my favorite player! Let him retire as a Met, go into the HOF as A Met, and live out the rest of his career as an SNY analyst/broadcaster!!
It’s a horrible idea. He has no room on our bench. He’s a catcher who can’t catch. He’s not a first baseman. If we had the DH I’d consider it, but he would be a total waste of a roster spot.
No more of a waste than Julio Franco was. Piazza can waste a spot on my bench anyday. He is the reason the Mets are back to where they are today. Our club was crap before we got Piazza. He put us back on the map. I know he doesnt really have a position he could play but if he is willing to play a little first and be the 3rd string catcher then sign him up.
How do you figure it’s a horrible idea? The Mets are one short of a right hand man out the bench. WIth a Mike Piazza acquisition, it solidifies our bench in every aspect. I do agree he’s not a first basemen, but maybe he can catch once in a blue to give both Schneider and Castro some needed rest, especially in the dog days of summer and September. I just saw Mikes tribute on Youtube and it would pain me to see him retire without a final shot at glory. I want all us to start an immense viral campaign to bring back Mike Piazza for a one year deal. He’s a signified right hand bat off the bench with some pop. He can retire as a Met and finally get that infamous World Series ring. We can start spreading the word in about every blog available so it can therefore reach the Organization’s PR team.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s probably my favorite Met of all time, but he’s done. You don’t give a roster spot to someone that can’t field, unless you are in the AL and have a DH spot.
At least Franco could play defense…
Piazza was great. but he can’t help the Mets anymore. He would just be a pinch hitter. I like the idea of the Mets retiring his number.
Dont you ever say nothing bad about Mike Piazza and thoes who do dont know a 1st round hall of famer that got us out of the gutter and into playoffs .If you cant give a guy like Mike Piaza respect you dont diserve any yourself .
BRING BACK MIKE FOR BENCH
or mabee a sign cheap if it dont work retire his number 31
Hell yea. But only to a minor league deal to play first. He could concentrate on learning the position and provide depth for Castro, Delgado, and Easley all of whom are coming off injuries. He has considered playing in japan lately so i’d think he’d at least consider it
if he could actually catch and play first id be all for it but i dont think he really can at this point. i hope he does 1 of two things, retires or signs with an AL contender (tigers, angels) so he can win a ring, other than that hes got nothing left to prove hes a first ballot HOFer.
while we’re on the subject let’s also give sammy sosa, odalis perez, and a couple of the others guys out there minor league deals too. Our farm is empty at the top, we have money, lets fill new orleans with useful veterans. Sosa, with all his baggage, is the only guy we can get to adequately fill in for Alou’s dl trips without giving up players or a roster spot. look at his numbers last year. Over 90 rbis and no suitors. Piazza and sosa would join ledee, valentin, a-hern, gotay, and tatis. Rather have prospects, but this will do nicely.
The sentimental side of me says hell yeah, but the rational part of me realizes there isn’t a whole lot of room for him considering he doesn’t really have a position anymore, and that we don’t carry a third string catcher very often.
SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes the Mets and Johan Santana are closing in on a six-year extension worth about $22 million.
Other sources have said the Mets are holding firm at five years, perhaps with a vesting option, but Heyman has said all along it’d be six years. Heyman also says the Mets would add about $7 million to his 2008 salary of $13.25 million. That’d mean Santana would earn about $152 million over the next seven years.
listen dick this guy wants to be a met even if its for free. do you understand?
boo hoo santana will get 140 million instead of 150, i dont know how hes going to be able to support his family with only 21 million a year instead of 22 million,
OMAR GET IT DONE!!!!!!!
I agree with your comment…One mil will not hurt his wallet. However, Omar has nothing to do with the negotiation. Omar did his part in acquiring Johan, now it’s up to the Wilpon’s to seal the deal! They need to get it done! And, I think it will.
Exactly. No more “Omar get it done!” comments. Omar got it done. His job is done. It is now up to Jeff Wilpon to get it done. So Jeffrey Boy Get It Done!
umm… Omar is the GM. He is the one in charge of all baseball operations. Wilpon is involved no doubt, but its still Omars show
Ummm…all reports have said Jeff is running the negotiations. That is old news and was discussed yesterday.
I would be willing to bet you anything that Omar has no power over what the contract will be. The Wilpons are tight with their money. Omar’s only job was to get the trade done but it has been reported that Jeff Wilpon is leading these contract negotiations. My opinion is that if it were up to Omar he would have him signed already. Omar is involved only to advise Jeff on the baseball related bonus factors. Jeff is in complete control of this negotiation. Jeff, get it done!
Thank you Gipper.
Jeff Wilpon as COO is heading up contract negotiations. Omar and Bernazard are there as well – but Jeff is leading the discussions.
Omar and Bernazard are translating
Omar does not control the vault…Again, no doubt, Omar did his job…But now the onus is on the Wilpon’s. WILPONS’ GET IT DONE!
Anybody catch the back page of the Post on wednesday…a prettty awful photoshop of Johan’s face on what i believe is Feliciano’s body
Good Call… I knew it was Feliciano right away.
yea you can tell by the ripped sleeve on the black under shirt, dead give away..
I get the NY Post “West Coast Edition” or somethin’ like that and they had the same back page but didn’t change Feliciano’s #25 to Santana’s #57, ruined it..
oops
Can anyone find it online? I’d love to see it.
yeah caught it right away because of the arm angle, necklace, and oh yeah sanatana hasnt worn a met uniform yet, thats right. daily news had him in minnesota garb, which was much better because it was real. but forgive the post they didnt know any better.
He’ll accept 7 years $149 mill
Piazza is not worth 7 years.
lol
Again, this is out of Omars hands… The Wilpons are dealing with this.
who the hell are these people that claim to know what is going on in the negotiation process?
hahahah Bats in the Belfry I have that picture hang up at my desk and just look at it, and I indeed think that it is a picture Felicano haha good catch.
I can’t believe DJ short stole Ted Berg’s thunder on this post. Ted had it up first and then they changed it
Haha. It’s not quite that dramatic. We posted it at the same time.
I agree, it wasn’t dramatic at all.
so undramatic that maybe neither of you should have posted it…
I mean we rag on Mike F.’s opinion, but the espn guy is is the loop? seriously, its just his wild guess…
ESPN has been on top of this since the beginning.
a couple of guys from espn have been on it, not everyone, and certainly not Marchant
Y’know, I’m also against giving 7 years deals to pitchers due to the fact that you can only insure them for 3 years. It’s a lot of money and a lot of risk.. The only guys worth the risk are future hall-of-famer/dominator types. Like a Johan Santana for instance.
Oh….. wait.
really? you can only insure a pitcher’s contract for three years? If that’s true, I didn’t know that.
How do much does Greenberg get out of this?
Santana wants to be a Met? Chris Russo said just yesterday that the Mets were his third choice and we all know that Chris Russo knows everything…
He should stick to Tennis; he knows sometihng. Honestly.
“will likely make some small concessions ”
that’s big of him.
Slusho and the Rabid Cat are talking to Rick Reily about nothing.. absolutly nothing….
Haha im watching the same thing. Get heyman on to update us.
He deserves to be the highest paid pitcher in the game, so even small concessions are nice to hear
“He deserves to be the highest paid pitcher in the game”
yeah, but by how much? 5 million more than the next guy?
Absolutely.
10 million more?
If that next guy is Zito? Yeah.
For any other pitcher; No … For Johan Santana; Yes. Once you realize that Santana is coming up on age 29, a left handed 2 time Cy Young award winner, you’ll realize that those type of pitchers just don’t happen to grow on trees.
I’m not saying to pay him an insane amount of money like some others would do but I also think for a pitcher of his stature deserves the type of cheddar that’s coming to him as well.
Sometimes you got to stop thinking of baseball players like a regular person who earns minimum wage, these are people in sports, much like actors, who get paid triple of what we get.
If a person can get more for what he thinks he is worth, why crucify him for making that decision? My family did the same thing, when something better comes up, they go for the job that pays them more.
No, he doesn’t deserve to be the highest paid pitcher in the game. He deserves to get a fair contract regardless of the fact that some other team paid way too much for their pitcher.
He turned down 4 yrs and $80 Million from a small market team. The Twins made him a fair offer and he turned it down.
I would offer him 6 years $120 Million. Thats it, take it or leave it.
I believe that would give him the highest salary per year. If thats not enough for him, tell him to take a hike.
this is probably the funniest comment I’ve read on this site in ages. yeah, i’d say a good strategy is to tell one of the best pitchers in the league to take a hike after FINALLY reaching a deal to trade for him. smart move- with that kind of solid brain activity you should be a GM or owner for say….the Marlins.
Not even…the Devil Rays…
true…at least the Marlins have won a couple of WS titles
but we can replace Johan with Kyle Lohse with no problem, right??
yeah you do that…and watch Johan tell you to take a hike…and then ultimately after the deal falls apart, Met management will tell you to take a hike as well.
Santana deserves whatever he can get from the Mets.
WFAN with all its inside sources and tenured NY folk really dropped the ball on this one, gone are the days of news updates via the Flash every 20 min., i just hit the refresh button every 15 seconds and I’m satiated.
Funny you should mention that. I can’t trust the Fan because they are usually uninformed. I can’t trust ESPN because they always propose doom and gloom. Metsblog is the place to be!!!! (Although I do have to say, ESPN Radio locally has been on top of alot…although Marchand probably reads here too!) :-)
Metsblog is the place for the best information. Its funny that I dont even remember how I learned about Metsblog but I’m glad I found it regardless. At first I thought Matt was kissing the butts of Mets brass to get an “in” with them but he quickly proved me wrong. He has stayed loyal to his roots and wont hesitate to be critical when neccesary and warranted. Lets go Mets and please pull this off Jeff.
I agree Metsblog is my source for all Mets news. LOL. A co-worker, a fellow Met fan, turned me onto this site. It’s been a blessing. My day is not complete without spending a good portion of my day on this site. Thanks MATT!
Awesome Sandlot reference DJ Short!
For-evv-errr
He’s the A-Rod of pitchers. He deserves to get whatever he wants to get!
Where do they get this stuff? Did someone just run out of the negotiations room and whisper “Santana is willing to make small concessions”?
fatso and fruitloops cannot be relied upon for any kind of factual information period.
I learned this about 15 years ago.
But on a lighter note… good Sandlot quote at the top…
I just heard that the deal fell through and the Mets went to plan B and signed Lohse to a 6 year 80 mil deal!!!!! Way to go Wilpons!!!
RUDE
Thats not even funny, really its not, ur either a skankee fan or a non baseball fan who just likes to piss people off, you should go back to ur horrible life and sit alone crying becuase noone likes u.
wow, a bit harsh, no?
Ahhh, greed.
Santana better not get too greedy otherwise fans like me are going to tell him to take his act somewhere else.
This pretty sickening already.
Don’t worry, when he signs, I am sure there will be plenty of fans to take your seat at Shea.
you want a s’more?
Oh yeah, the Great Bambino. Of course! I thought you said the Great Bambi.
The ball is is signed by a lady named, “Baby Ruth”! LOL. Great Movie!
On days like this I listen to the Internet tv/radio shows on mlb.com, particularly Casey Stern from 2pm-5pm who is Mets fan and so I know he will be all over this.
Fear not.
I foresee this being completed.
Rest easy.
I would let Santana sleep with my girlfreind to get this deal done. And as for Piazza. I say sign him for a buck, let him come to the plate on opening day, tip his hat, switch him for a pinch hitter, and let him ride off into the sunset with his head up, as a NY Met!
i’m gonna eat a concession stand if this doesn’t happen soon
Wow, eat a concession stand?! It’s ok to eat between Johan Santana news. lol
Anyone ask WIllie Randolph if there’s champagne on ice for sipping once Santana is signed? I think Randolph still has a bottle he set aside in September.
LMAO that line still makes me laugh today….
As funny as that sounds, I STILL cannot believe he uttered those words!
yes but that will have to go to Santana as well, it a concession of his deal…
“Hey, it’s gonna be that much sweeter when we sign him.”
-Willie
That made me laugh and cringe simultaneously.
Enough is enough…the Yankees fans at the job are foaming at the mouth at the chance that we screw this up…MAKE THE DEAL!!!
I have been getting that too. Yankee fans like my fiance telling me dont worry hon you know your Mets will screw this up and you will lose him. If she is right I am cancelling the wedding.
She’s a yankees fan… should have cancelled it already.
I try to look past it and it makes for good fun during the Subway Series every year. I think I may be luring her to our side little by little. She has a huge crush on Wright. I have already told her that once we have children, if I ever see anything Yankee on them it is grounds for immediate divorce.
hahaha you’ll be like the opposite of my parents. my dad’s the yanks fan, he basically adopts my cousin and disowns me during the baseball season :(
Well at least you have your priorities straight. Seriously no way could have dated a skank fan. I am currently engaged to a diehard Met fan. match made in Shea heaven.
That is what’s up! My ex girlfriend was converted to the mets from a red sox fan also because of DWright. She liked Reyes too, because she likes reggaetone dancers and really doesn’t understand the game.
In other news, my IPod went through the wash today.
that sux
finally something interesting…does it still work?
I don’t know yet. Trying to let it dry out..meh, maybe this is a good excuse for a iTouch?
don’t know how technically inclined you are. But look up instructions on the net about how to take it apart, it’s possible. I have a macbook pro and was reading if you take it apart (after spilling water in the keyboard) to let it dry that fixes it 90% of the time. Same might be true with ipods as well, def. worth a try. Although having a device submerged in water and banging around during the spin cycle is a slightly different extreme then spilling a little while. Forget the touch, spend another $100 for the iphone, worth it!!
Not very technically inclined, in fact my job is based around computers. But that is a good idea. I might try it, but I do want that iTouch lol…and I wouldn’t bother with the iPhone, because I have a BlackBerry that I need for my job with emailing and such anyway.
Dude, you put your clothes in the dryer… just drop the iPod in the dryer. It works the same way, no problem!
I’ve read that your best bet is to open it and let it air dry for a few days. Do not use a hair dryer, though.
The iTouch can do everything the iPhone can do (Except make phone calls) due to the January Software Update. Additionally, it is thinner than the iPhone and dead sexy. I am very satisfied with my purchase. I even have a Metsblog button on the home screen.
Again, I’m willing to bet there are no instructions on your dryer or iPod that say “do not put in the dryer.” That’s your best bet. It’s a dryer. It dries things.
Your right, except make phone calls. Oh, and the Ipod Touch users get charged for updates, whereas Iphone oweners get it for free. But the catch all, is the fact that you have to carry your ipod and your phone, when I only have to carry one device. Meaning = I can wear pants with one pocket! HA – Beat that!
If you can find a pair of pants with only one pocket, I will concede to your point.
Also, new iTouch owners get the update for free, so apple is only shafting us early adopters
I’m a kangaroo, so I’ve got a pouch. Which means no pocket. Beat that!
Like many of us, I assume, I’m getting delirious waiting for the news to break.
I got the Touch last week after my fiance decided that a half open bottle of water seemed like a good idea to put in her bag where my iPod video was at the time. I don’t know, it seems once you get water into one of those things they’re pretty much gone for good. If you take it to the Apple store though, even if it’s busted they give you 10% off any model. In NYC that pretty much covers only the tax, but what else are you going to get for a broken iPod? My biggest complaint is the smaller memory so I had to go through and deselect a ton of music and some videos to get it down to 14-point-something gigs but it is quite a nifty gadget. My biggest reservation about the iPhone is the service, AT&T/Cingular sucks in Manhattan. I have a BlackBerry Pearl so it’s pretty compact and virtually on par with the iPhone in email/internet capability but the safari browser is definitely nicer than the BlackBerry.
if that ever happened to my iphone, i’d flush my own head down the toilet. What model did you have?
I only had the Nano, but yeah, it still sucks.
we know that the ipod blends… but does it wash?
I would die if I lost my I-Pod.
My iPod doesn’t hold a battery charge for more than an hour or two. Anyone else have that problem?
What gen? The older ones start to lose the ability to hold a charge after a while.
I think it’s a fourth gen, video iPod. About two years old. Does that sound about right?
Hmm, that is unusual. I was talking Gens 1-3. The first iPod with video is Gen 5 (October 2005). I have this one and have had great battery performance, to date.
Ok, 5th Gen. I’ve had battery problems since i got it. I even exchanged the first one. They say it will hold a charge for like up to 7 hours, but I only get one or two. They also say move the hold switch on top to conserve power when it’s off, but that hasn’t done me any good either. Bastards. I’ll bet they’re in on this Santana nonsense.
Haha… ditto.
Apple basically owns me: 2 MacBooks, 2 iPods, iPhone, and AppleTV… I have a disease…
Hate when that happens.
today is the day we become legit contenders, actually favorites, for the world series…..i will say one thing: I am 100% confident we will sign johan today. If we do not, I am filing for legal separation of a period of no less than one year from my beloved mets…..i will not root, support, watch or care one bit about the mets and if i fall in love with another team, so be it
other than that, in omar we trust
and i would let johan sleep with mongo’s girlfriend too….truth be told, johan could bang my wife as long he signs with us and his era stays under 3.00
So you’re saying Santana’s willing to give up his second marble hot tub?
No, the third. And a bag of Lays BBQ chips hand delivered to Jeff Coupon’s door.
Hey danimal, if you got a couple of Cy’s and want to sign with the Mets, you can bang her too! Hell, if you got Mets-rules 85 a new i-pod, isure he would let you sleep with his girl also!
Haha, I wouldn’t go THAT far…maybe a flash? :D
i am a twins fan but the mets are my second faviort team i’m going miss watching johan at home games and on tv but he is still going to my second faviort team i just want this to be a dont deal and start a new era for both my favirots as a twins fan chearing on Carlos Gomez , Phil Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra and as and still chearing johan i just hope you guys can get the deal done i want the deal done
Not much emphasis on spelling in the Minnesota schools, is there?
or punctuation
or common sense
Johan is gonna sell mini hotdogs at Shea?
Dont kid like that…now your getting my hopes up even more…Heyman just said something like 152mill per because they would add 7 million to his 2008 contract…not one for numbers so just get it done already…
lol….. nice….i am going delerious here watting for it to actually go thru and become official…..i am popping the bubbly tonight to celebrate
lets go mets…….
meet the mets
come on out and greet the mets
with johan on the team
no one can beat the mets
guys, if you need something to pass the time in between refreshes. got to freetetris.org. works well for me!
i like to pass my time at work on http://www.spill.com
movie reviews with funny animated characters.
.The Meet the Spartans review cracked me up.
I’ll check out freetetris right now. Thanks!
btw…any jets fans out there?,,,,congress is questioning goodell on why he destroyed the spygate tapes….prob not a big deal, but anytime the pats get dragged thru the mud, it’s a good thing
This is killing me. Get the deal done already.
As for the Jets and “spygate”. I don’t see how this is Senate’s business. Companies reprimand employees everyday and throw out the evidence all the time. All of a sudden the government cares what major league sports do. Its like the latest cause to jump in on if you are a member of Congress.
They’re under the anti-trust exemption bringing them within Congress’s jurisdiction.
exactly
I’ll be interested to read what happened. We never did get the whole story. And though I’m def impressed by the so-far perfect season, I haven’t heard one peep about how they WERE CAUGHT CHEATING.
So what would a laptop get me?
I just got that mini hot dog joke. Small concessions. Pretty funny stuff!
The Mets will get a bill from me for the carpotunnel syndrome treatments I will need, and for a new mouse.
I wonder if this big dark cloud over my house is a sign?
I’m like so scared, excited, nervous. ESPN MVP is a WASTE of time I was in Psych looking at my phone every 10 seconds.
get it done!!!!
you think your nervous, I have to bust out my inhaler every couple of hours because I’m losing my breath. Man i sounded pathetic.
My IBS is flaring up =)
It’ll get done! I have faith…for once
2 hours 45 minutes
Got off a Braves blog page and these jerk offs have a count down to the deadline. You guys should raid there damn page and tell them to srew a cat. Its Chop and Change/ MVN.com.
chill out
Why would you care if a Braves blogsite has a countdown going? Seriously, are you really that upset about that?
I honestly feel like there is nothing to worry about. The “physical” and “contract extension” that are pending are mere formalities. Omar and the Mets have come a long way and are at this point too invested in Santana for a deal not to be done. Relax Mets fans- Johan Santana will be on the mound come Opening Day and you can bet your bottom dollar he’s gonna lead us to a World Series Championship!!!
ignore the braves fans, they are losers who still do that chopping motion thingy. theyre meaningless.
I’m sweating…
All this is is the two sides trying to get what’s in their best interest. The Wilpons are trying to give up the least amount of money/years and Santana’s agent is trying to get the most amount of money/years for his client.
But the Wilpons know that if they let this deal slip away because of money, they will get slammed by the NY media and the Mets fanbase. Santana has a bit of an upper hand because of this but he also knows that he doesn’t really have much leverage because he wants to be a Met and the Twins are fine with sending him to us. So they’ll battle back and forth for a while and make us sweat it out while they both try to give up as little as possible before eventually agreeing.
“Mets closing in on six-year contract with Santana”
From Heyman at SI:
Santana and the Mets are discussing a contract extension for six years that is expected to pay Santana close to $22 million a year, according to sources familiar with the talks. In addition, it is believed the Mets may add about $7 million to Santana’s $13.25 million salary for 2008.
Heyman just posted on SI…Mets and Santan close to a deal…6 years $22mill per plus the $7 million signing bonus for ’08…total $152 million for 7 years of service
Nice!
Evenually agreeing at 4:59.59 !
It’s almost time. Jo-han San-ta-na, Jo-han San-ta-na, Jo-han San-taaaa-naaa, Jo-han San-taaa-naa [Guantanamera].
According to heyman at 2.07 pm. they are closing in on a 6 year deal and a signing bonus this year.. totL VALUE OF DEAL 152 MILLION!!!!!!!!!
It’s getting there….
Come on Computer, hang in there for a few more lousy hours!
dammit, you did it again
Nevets72 beat me too it
BREAKING NEWS…
My iPod started to work!
Sweet!
Though, a contract extention must also be worked out with iPod, who played 1,034 songs last year. He supposedly is asking for an additional .3 GB, and to be fitted with a new, canadian goose fur holder.
A 72 hour window is now open.
great, great post! Who cares about Johan! Make should post the IPOD IS ALIVE!
This should be on the ESPN main page. Breaking News: Mets_Rule’s I-Pod works; World Rejoices!
Take a couple of Alka-Seltzers and it should flush the bad feelings right out. lol
I love you all.
Is it time for a group hug yet?
Send Paulie out there to negotiate with this money
So your girl flashing us is out of the question?
Yes, but maybe I could flash you! ;)
ESPN seems to be out of the loop on this story. Heyman is the only one on it at this point.
Johan Santana signing! Mets-Rule85 flashing me! Not bad! Not bad at all! of course i would have to see if its ok with my girl first.
Heh, funny thing happened to me yesterday. I was coming home from work, I got on the elevator, pressed my floor, and got out. I go to where my apartment is, apartment F, take out my keys and open the door…I go to hang up my keys on the key hanger thing, but it’s not there…
So I go to put them down on the little table thing that’s normally right near the door and that’s not there. Then I notice that there’s all this stuff on the floor that’s not mine…
I start freaking out, and go out of the apartment…it hit me that I was in the wrong apartment! For some reason, the elevator let me off at floor 12 instead of 14. I called security and told them the story, and they were freaking out because my key shouldn’t open up another room, right? They changed both of our locks.
Wow, what a lucky chance. there’s 30 floors, and 7 apartments on each floor, and i happen to get the one that my key opens up…I should play the lottery more!
lmao while reading the beginning of the story i thought you were about to say you were robbed…that wouldnt be funny…damn Wilpons trying to find some extra cash…
You shoulv’e looked around to see if they had an i-phone.
