Buzz: Johan Willing To Make Small Concessions

By D.J. Short on Feb 01, 2008, 1:14 pm

According to 1050 ESPN Radio‘s Andrew Marchand, LHP Johan Santana will likely make some small concessions in his contract negotiations because he wants to be a Met.

…you’re killin’ me, smalls…

Looks like Johan wants to become a Met more than the Wilpons do ;-)

That’s really unfair. The Wilpons are offering Santana $110 million GUARANTEED up front and five full years. That’s not nickel and diming Santana, no way.

The Santana camp is just trying to get everything they can before they sign. That is what this is all about. At 4:59PM ET the Mets will announce the Deal is done and Johan Santana will be the newest Met! Get ready for the Press Conference.

I “m well aware that this is completely off the topic, but I propose that we bring back Mike Piazza as a right hand off the bench so he can both retire as a Met and finally get his ring. Whaddaya say?

I love the idea. Mike will always be my favorite player! Let him retire as a Met, go into the HOF as A Met, and live out the rest of his career as an SNY analyst/broadcaster!!

          Feb 01, 2008, 1:27 pm at 1:27 pm #

It’s a horrible idea. He has no room on our bench. He’s a catcher who can’t catch. He’s not a first baseman. If we had the DH I’d consider it, but he would be a total waste of a roster spot.

          Feb 01, 2008, 1:32 pm at 1:32 pm #

No more of a waste than Julio Franco was. Piazza can waste a spot on my bench anyday. He is the reason the Mets are back to where they are today. Our club was crap before we got Piazza. He put us back on the map. I know he doesnt really have a position he could play but if he is willing to play a little first and be the 3rd string catcher then sign him up.

How do you figure it’s a horrible idea? The Mets are one short of a right hand man out the bench. WIth a Mike Piazza acquisition, it solidifies our bench in every aspect. I do agree he’s not a first basemen, but maybe he can catch once in a blue to give both Schneider and Castro some needed rest, especially in the dog days of summer and September. I just saw Mikes tribute on Youtube and it would pain me to see him retire without a final shot at glory. I want all us to start an immense viral campaign to bring back Mike Piazza for a one year deal. He’s a signified right hand bat off the bench with some pop. He can retire as a Met and finally get that infamous World Series ring. We can start spreading the word in about every blog available so it can therefore reach the Organization’s PR team.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s probably my favorite Met of all time, but he’s done. You don’t give a roster spot to someone that can’t field, unless you are in the AL and have a DH spot.

At least Franco could play defense…

Piazza was great. but he can’t help the Mets anymore. He would just be a pinch hitter. I like the idea of the Mets retiring his number.

Hell yea. But only to a minor league deal to play first. He could concentrate on learning the position and provide depth for Castro, Delgado, and Easley all of whom are coming off injuries. He has considered playing in japan lately so i’d think he’d at least consider it

          Feb 01, 2008, 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm #

if he could actually catch and play first id be all for it but i dont think he really can at this point. i hope he does 1 of two things, retires or signs with an AL contender (tigers, angels) so he can win a ring, other than that hes got nothing left to prove hes a first ballot HOFer.

        Feb 01, 2008, 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #

while we’re on the subject let’s also give sammy sosa, odalis perez, and a couple of the others guys out there minor league deals too. Our farm is empty at the top, we have money, lets fill new orleans with useful veterans. Sosa, with all his baggage, is the only guy we can get to adequately fill in for Alou’s dl trips without giving up players or a roster spot. look at his numbers last year. Over 90 rbis and no suitors. Piazza and sosa would join ledee, valentin, a-hern, gotay, and tatis. Rather have prospects, but this will do nicely.

The sentimental side of me says hell yeah, but the rational part of me realizes there isn’t a whole lot of room for him considering he doesn’t really have a position anymore, and that we don’t carry a third string catcher very often.

SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes the Mets and Johan Santana are closing in on a six-year extension worth about $22 million.

Other sources have said the Mets are holding firm at five years, perhaps with a vesting option, but Heyman has said all along it’d be six years. Heyman also says the Mets would add about $7 million to his 2008 salary of $13.25 million. That’d mean Santana would earn about $152 million over the next seven years.

I agree with your comment…One mil will not hurt his wallet. However, Omar has nothing to do with the negotiation. Omar did his part in acquiring Johan, now it’s up to the Wilpon’s to seal the deal! They need to get it done! And, I think it will.

I would be willing to bet you anything that Omar has no power over what the contract will be. The Wilpons are tight with their money. Omar’s only job was to get the trade done but it has been reported that Jeff Wilpon is leading these contract negotiations. My opinion is that if it were up to Omar he would have him signed already. Omar is involved only to advise Jeff on the baseball related bonus factors. Jeff is in complete control of this negotiation. Jeff, get it done!

Y’know, I’m also against giving 7 years deals to pitchers due to the fact that you can only insure them for 3 years. It’s a lot of money and a lot of risk.. The only guys worth the risk are future hall-of-famer/dominator types. Like a Johan Santana for instance.

For any other pitcher; No … For Johan Santana; Yes. Once you realize that Santana is coming up on age 29, a left handed 2 time Cy Young award winner, you’ll realize that those type of pitchers just don’t happen to grow on trees.

I’m not saying to pay him an insane amount of money like some others would do but I also think for a pitcher of his stature deserves the type of cheddar that’s coming to him as well.

Sometimes you got to stop thinking of baseball players like a regular person who earns minimum wage, these are people in sports, much like actors, who get paid triple of what we get.

If a person can get more for what he thinks he is worth, why crucify him for making that decision? My family did the same thing, when something better comes up, they go for the job that pays them more.

    • steve333
      Feb 01, 2008, 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #

No, he doesn’t deserve to be the highest paid pitcher in the game. He deserves to get a fair contract regardless of the fact that some other team paid way too much for their pitcher.
He turned down 4 yrs and $80 Million from a small market team. The Twins made him a fair offer and he turned it down.

I would offer him 6 years $120 Million. Thats it, take it or leave it.
I believe that would give him the highest salary per year. If thats not enough for him, tell him to take a hike.

this is probably the funniest comment I’ve read on this site in ages. yeah, i’d say a good strategy is to tell one of the best pitchers in the league to take a hike after FINALLY reaching a deal to trade for him. smart move- with that kind of solid brain activity you should be a GM or owner for say….the Marlins.

          Feb 01, 2008, 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #

don’t know how technically inclined you are. But look up instructions on the net about how to take it apart, it’s possible. I have a macbook pro and was reading if you take it apart (after spilling water in the keyboard) to let it dry that fixes it 90% of the time. Same might be true with ipods as well, def. worth a try. Although having a device submerged in water and banging around during the spin cycle is a slightly different extreme then spilling a little while. Forget the touch, spend another $100 for the iphone, worth it!!

        • Mets_Rule85
          Feb 01, 2008, 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #

Not very technically inclined, in fact my job is based around computers. But that is a good idea. I might try it, but I do want that iTouch lol…and I wouldn’t bother with the iPhone, because I have a BlackBerry that I need for my job with emailing and such anyway.

The iTouch can do everything the iPhone can do (Except make phone calls) due to the January Software Update. Additionally, it is thinner than the iPhone and dead sexy. I am very satisfied with my purchase. I even have a Metsblog button on the home screen.

Again, I’m willing to bet there are no instructions on your dryer or iPod that say “do not put in the dryer.” That’s your best bet. It’s a dryer. It dries things.

Your right, except make phone calls. Oh, and the Ipod Touch users get charged for updates, whereas Iphone oweners get it for free. But the catch all, is the fact that you have to carry your ipod and your phone, when I only have to carry one device. Meaning = I can wear pants with one pocket! HA – Beat that!

I got the Touch last week after my fiance decided that a half open bottle of water seemed like a good idea to put in her bag where my iPod video was at the time. I don’t know, it seems once you get water into one of those things they’re pretty much gone for good. If you take it to the Apple store though, even if it’s busted they give you 10% off any model. In NYC that pretty much covers only the tax, but what else are you going to get for a broken iPod? My biggest complaint is the smaller memory so I had to go through and deselect a ton of music and some videos to get it down to 14-point-something gigs but it is quite a nifty gadget. My biggest reservation about the iPhone is the service, AT&T/Cingular sucks in Manhattan. I have a BlackBerry Pearl so it’s pretty compact and virtually on par with the iPhone in email/internet capability but the safari browser is definitely nicer than the BlackBerry.

All this is is the two sides trying to get what’s in their best interest. The Wilpons are trying to give up the least amount of money/years and Santana’s agent is trying to get the most amount of money/years for his client.

But the Wilpons know that if they let this deal slip away because of money, they will get slammed by the NY media and the Mets fanbase. Santana has a bit of an upper hand because of this but he also knows that he doesn’t really have much leverage because he wants to be a Met and the Twins are fine with sending him to us. So they’ll battle back and forth for a while and make us sweat it out while they both try to give up as little as possible before eventually agreeing.

ESPN seems to be out of the loop on this story. Heyman is the only one on it at this point.

Heh, funny thing happened to me yesterday. I was coming home from work, I got on the elevator, pressed my floor, and got out. I go to where my apartment is, apartment F, take out my keys and open the door…I go to hang up my keys on the key hanger thing, but it’s not there…

So I go to put them down on the little table thing that’s normally right near the door and that’s not there. Then I notice that there’s all this stuff on the floor that’s not mine…

I start freaking out, and go out of the apartment…it hit me that I was in the wrong apartment! For some reason, the elevator let me off at floor 12 instead of 14. I called security and told them the story, and they were freaking out because my key shouldn’t open up another room, right? They changed both of our locks.

Wow, what a lucky chance. there’s 30 floors, and 7 apartments on each floor, and i happen to get the one that my key opens up…I should play the lottery more!
