LHP Pedro Feliciano avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $1.025 million contract with the Mets.
…i’ve been sitting on this information for a few hours, but since the New York Post photoshopped Johan Santana‘s head onto Feliciano‘s body for their backpage the other day, i figure we owe him one…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…i love that, during all the hustle, bustle and chaos surrounding the Johan Santana negotiations, the greenbergs and the Mets found time to finalize a deal for feliciano…now, that’s multitasking…

Whats another mil when they just spent 150? Feliciano is worth it.
Anybody have a link to the Post’s picture of Pedro with the Johan head?

Good.
lol i noticed that…i said “why does johan look like feliciano here?” then i said “oh wait that pretty much IS feliciano, just more johan-ed out”
I’m glad they got that done. After 6 1/3 from Maine, he finishes the 7th by retiring Utley and Howard, Heilman comes on for the 8th to retire Burrell, Jenkins and Feliz, leaving Wagner to deal with Ruiz, the pinch hitter for the pitcher and then the mano a mano with Rollins the great prognosticator while 50,000 Met fans tell Rollins where he can stick his 0 2007 post season victories!
Another great move by omar wow!
FINALLY THE DEAL IS DONE!!!!!1111
Jeez, two steals in one week. Omar is on fire!
nice call on the feliciano … hes an important part of this team
lets not forget Duaner Sanchez he could be the most under estimated piece of this team this season..very interested in what he will bring to the table
great day to be a met fan
matt do u have a pic of that backpage , i misssed it.
thanks
did omar buy him supper too?
At this point I expect a significantly better bullpen this year. For one thing the options are much deeper, and that is really the nature of relief pitching once you scrape past the lights out closer types. One year Matt Wise could be untouchable, the next he could be DFA’d. We have a good amount of RP’s with resumes, so no one has any undue amount of pressure on them. Plus, having Johan in there instead of Park/Lawrence/Sosa should rest the pen up a lot better.
Kudos to Matt…just a great job throughout this whole process. This was the site to get the important updates.
well said…Mattt thank you…you go above and beyond for us fans and I appreciate everything.
Wonder if they sent the leftover food from the Santana negotiation to Feliciano.
My Lineup would be
1. reyes
2. Castillo
3. Church
4. Wright
5. beltran
6. delgado
7. alou
8. schnieder
there are many reason why to put church 3rd, i jsut dont want to type it
the the biggest one that you’d like to get wright beltran and delgado each about 20 LESS plate appearances over the course of the year by dropping them all a spot?
Son…that don’t make a lick of sense.
I don’t get that lineup either. In fact, if you want to go with an “outside the box” lineup, this is the right one:
1. Reyes
2. Wright
3. Beltran
4. Delgado
5. Alou
6. Church
7. Schneider
8. Pitcher
9 Castillo
No way Willie would consider using it (nor would any manager not named LaRussa). But over a full season, it would probably produce more runs than Castillo in the 2-hole.
I’d really love to hear those reasons.
Well I’d love to see them but to me that doesn’t make sense.
Church usually posts around a .350 OBP. That’s average. Now, the Mets will have less of an opportunity to score when Jose Reyes gets on:
Likely scenario in that case is that one of Church-Reyes-Castillo gets on first base and Wright is up with 2 outs. Not an optimal situation.
With Wright hitting third, you have more of a chance to get 2 men on base and have 1 out for Carlos Beltran, because of his much higher on base percentage. You are also more likely to have Wright hit an extra base hit.
Wright is also more prone to contact, so if he hits third, and there is one out with Reyes on first or second, he has more of an opportunity to move the runner, Reyes, over into better position on hte basepaths for Beltran.
The final reason I know that the afforementioned scenario would not be good is that the second most likely turnout for any lineup except one with Barry Bonds is a 1-2-3 inning. This gives the stick to Wright, Beltran and Delgado in the second inning. Of course, Wright would be fine leading off an inning and the same for Beltran hitting 2nd. However, it is probable that the Mets start Delgado 5th this year, and that Alou will only play 80-100 games. Therefore, Delgado would get a lot of time hitting third in the second inning in your scenario. The problem with that is he had wrist surgery in late September and will take him 8-12 months from September 2007 to really get back to speed. This could be another bump in the order. Now, let’s say Wright and Beltran get on the corners and Delgado pops out. You leave Alou and possibly Endy Chavez, two guys who hit a lot of ground balls to the infield in a double play position. Not good.
And for the last scenario, the fact that Alou hits the ball hard isn’t a plus.
Wait – we just spent $150 mil for Johan’s face??? Sheeet….
Well now that we’ve had about 3 hours of sheer ecstacy, is anyone worried at all about this? (from MSG.com):
“The left-hander slipped a bit last year, finishing with a 15-13 record that included marks of 0-5 against AL Central champion Cleveland and 1-3 vs. Detroit. He dropped seven of his final 11 decisions as his ERA rose from 2.60 to 3.33 ERA, his highest since 2001. He also allowed a career-high 33 homers – most in the AL.”
Yes, you’d be worried if he was going to be on the same team this year. He’s not. Pitcher’s park, with no DH to worry about and batters that aren’t familiar with him.
He’ll be great.
Santana was pissed off by the 2nd half, he was voicing it publicly because the Twins weren’t going for the playoffs, they traded Castillo, etc. Santana was certainly not happy and I can see that that might have played into his poorer performance in the 2nd half. Either way, he still put up a decent year for mortal standards, and he still finished 5th in Cy young voting. With the NL and Shea helping him out and a better chance to win, there’s no reason to not think we’ll be getting the real Santana. Fear not Mets fans.
There’s such a small sample size for Santana’s alleged regression that it’s hard to take it too seriously. Walter Johnson had an off-year in 1921, Seaver lost 9 of his first 11 in 1974 and still won 22 games the next year. With his track record, I wouldn’t worry in the first place, but especially not when I take into consideration all of the aforementioned outside factors that contributed, ie playing for a bad team that was going to trade him.
Also, while it’s nice that he’s logged more innings than anyone in the last 5 years, part of that is due to the Twins total reliance on him, something the Mets should not be as guilty of, and in turn should provide him with more rest.
Not to mention the no-DH, pitcher’s park, and the tendency for NL pitchers to exit games sooner for PH’s.
Well sooner if you have no bat but I hear this guy Santana could hit exceptionally well.,,,,However great post dude
Nah, I’m not worried. For the reasons that have been posted, and there’s this quote from Torii Hunter . . . ;)
My lineup is:
1.Reyes S
2.Castillo S
3.Wright R
4.Beltran S
5.Alou R
6.Delgado L
7.Church L
8.Schneider L/Castro R
Stick Castro in 7 and Church in 8th and ur gonna drive some managers mad.
I think that’s the one we’ll see opening day – possibly Alou & Delgado flipped.
I honestly think the non-traditional lineup I suggested earlier (with Castillo hitting 9th) would produce the most runs by maximizing ABs for our best hitters and balancing the order after the first time through. Unfortunately, this isn’t high school – and I can’t see it being accepted in a big league clubhouse.
1)Reyes,2)Castillo,3)Wright,4)Beltran,5)Delgado,6)Alou,7)Church,8)pinch hitter lol(Schneider)

was very bored leave me alone lol
That’s a nine-man bullpen (and you forgot Wagner, who’d make 10). So three of those relievers have to get cut or else your bench is strictly Castro and Anderson.
My guess is the three pitchers who don’t make the team are Burgos (injury rehab), Lugo (AAA) and probably Smith (because if we send Register down we lose him)
i was just showing our options at bullpen on our roster
but agree with what you say
can i wear my ” IN Omar We Trust” tshirt again? or is it still too soon?
You know I kinda miss the Johan rumor blogs. I’m getting all sentimental…Tear…
im bored now theres no more santana talk, ill see everyone when pitchers and catchers report lol
is not that your just board, your rightfully excited to be a met fan. Lets sit back and look at all that has been accomplished this off season. Well Omar picked a few Pen guys off waivers at a low salary gamble. He picked up an above average defensive catcher well because he had no choice because most offensive catchers were probably unavailable at the Milledge chip we had to offer, a catcher that will increase production from the team as a whole, (infielders and all starting pitchers as well as relief pitching)and because we minused offensive production in the line up with Scheider, he upgraded offensive production, in right field with Church to close the Loduca into Schieder gap, well probably deffensively also. These mentioned pick ups are inexpensive in the baseball world, allowing money to be used to fill other areas. Oh yeah, almost forgot, Omar did manage to trade for the best pitcher in the leauge to take the Mets to the world series for seasons to come.
There’s still the physical he needs to pass and the press conference, plenty more to look forward to!
Every time I look at this season’s lineup, which really doesnt have much room for give, I can’t help but think that there’s no good reason for this team not to sign Kevin Mench, who has always consistently destroyed lefties, despite not being of much use otherwise. That would give you this lineup vs. LHP:
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Alou
Delgado
Mench
Castro
Pitcher
That is a truly formidable lineup vs. a LHP, with the only plausible weak link being Delgado, who may still be Carlos Delgado, and thereby always brings the possibility for production.
Remember this could be Delgado’s last year as a Met so he’ll be playing for a contract if the Mets dont pick up his option, so Delgado will produce this year.
I agree totally, and expect a nice year out of him, but it’s hard to expect him to rake lefties.

Anyone Like the Get Mike Piazza At a discount for the Bench Idea
Way to stay positive with Mike but unfortunately no roster space available, he’ll also probably never produce at the same level again and wouldnt come back to the mets to depreciate his legacy.
still think we need a right handed bat with some pop off the bench and more bullpen help
I like the Mench idea too, is he a righty or lefty? and I think the mets got a reliver from oakland off waivers. So it looks like the inexpensive route in other areas inorder to give the money to Johan which Im fine with.
Mench is a righty, career .313/.380/.599 vs. lefties.
Meanwhile, Church has consistently been a much better hitter vs. righties, and is easily the better defensive player of the two, so a semi-platoon there wouold make a lot of sense, with church seeing the majority of the time facing righties and some lefties.
Giving you a 25-man roster of:
1) Reyes 2)Castillo 3) Wright 4) Beltran 5) Alou 6) Delgado 7) Church 8)Schneider 9)Endy 10) Gotay 11)Mench 12) M. Anderson 13)Easley 14) Castro 15)Santana 16) Pedro 17) Perez 18) Maine 19) Duque
20) Wagner 21) Heilman 22)Feliciano 23) Sanchez 24)Schoenweis 25)Wise
This way Pelfrey gets to develop in AAA some more, and you can see what you have with Valentin, Pagan, Smith, Sosa and Lugo down there too. Or if you prefer, you can drop easley or gotay and carry another pitcher…
i’m going to sleep to dream of johan’s first gift to us fans (the mets first no-no) on opening day in miami.
Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper “I love you”
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me
Say “Night-ie night” and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you’ll miss me
While I’m alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I’m longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me
I love you Johan
not to sound like chris russo, but “that’s a bad job” by the post. another reason they have no integrity.
Someone got lazy and didn’t want to do the job of putting a Mets uniform on Santana. Instead they put Feliciano’s body and make it seem like Santana’s! Well, soon they get the opportunity to take a REAL Santana picture in a Mets uniform.
good he is probably one of our best relivers
matt what is it, ny daily news says 7 yrs 150 mill newsday says 6 yrs 137 mill
ohhhhh or they added in his deal right now with the twins and it equals out to 150 mill over 7 ohhhhhhhhhhhh
The official extension is 6 years at 137 million, but that is an extension ON TOP of this year, 2008, in which he is already under contract for 13.25 million. If you add this year’s 13 mil to the 6 yr 137 mil extension, you get 150 mil over 7 years.
But you figured that out two seconds before I posted it. Haha
Jesus Christ, New York Post. What the hell?
So now are we gonna get minute to minute physical updates today? Hundreds of comments theorizing that the Wilpons slipped something in Johan’s much-publicized dinner last night to paralyze him, leaving them off the hook for the contract but blameless in the eyes of fans…
He just turned his head and coughed
Is it true that Reyes has been invited to the press conference??
I wonder what fat Mike will say, when seeing santana and reyes standing side by side since in his brain up until a couple of weeks ago a trade would have only been possible with Reyes included in the deal.
The headlines today should read “Mets spend $151 million on two pitchers”.
I’m sorry but any Mets fan that thinks Ryan church should be the 3rd in the batting order needs to lay off the pipe. Words can’t describe that stupidity. Btw D Wright is perfect in the third slot
