News: Mets and Johan Santana have a Deal
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 1, 2008 5:32 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal from FOXSports.com, during an appearance on SNY’s Daily News Live, Johan Santana is in the room with Mets representatives and his agents while negotiating what could end up being a seven-year deal in total, with an eighth-year option.

…next step has got to be a signature…

…sign, johan…sign

Update5:50 pm

…for what it’s worth, supper has been delivered to the negotiating table…i kid you not

Update6:02 pm

…seriously, this has to be a done deal, i would think…they’re not all together, in the same room, eating dinner, only to rip up the deal and go home, you know what i’m saying

Update6:44 pm

The Mets have issued a statement saying negotiations are complete and Santana is scheduled to take a physical.

…from what i can gather, the physical will be tomorrow

Update6:46 pm

i have reason to believe the deal is for a guaranteed six years, and $137.5 million…as expected, he’ll stay under contract on his current deal, but paid roughly $7 million on top of that…i can’t confirm that with people connected to the team, though…

Update7:02 pm

…santana’s agents also rep Jose Reyes, who has been invited to the press conference, which will almost certainly be next week…

i dont know but if they only gave them 2 hours it must be close their probably just working out the money for his incentives

SNY should host the press conference in the middle of 7th ave. MAKE A STATEMENT TO YANKEE YANKEES FANS. STOP TRAFFIC.

    • The 6:02 update is one of the greatest Matt Cerrone quotes of all time — let’s not forget that Matt is, above all, a fan — and even he needs some confirmation from his fellow fans sometimes that this is gonna get done.

    • D-ESH says:

      Dearest Met fans,
This has been a long three days off sweat, blood, tears, and sweat mixed with blood and tears. I would just like to wish everyone a happy hour of hope as we come down to the wire in this ridiculous event of baseball offseason trades. God knows we all need a little bit of Johan in times like this. Henceforth, lets all grab a pen, and a piece of loos-leef and all at the same time write in script. Johan Santana. Then cross the t. After, pray that voodoo is real. Im bored. Lets go mets. Thank you thanks a lot everyone. We all need Jesus. Thank you.

  38. chicowalkersucksballs says:

Just don’t hurt that elbow while signing buddy.

  39. cver says:

AN EIGHTH YEAR? ISN’T THAT NEWS????

    • Danny says:

it’s not really news. Johan from the start wanted a 7-year extension. I think we all misinterpreted that to mean a 7-year contract. This contract is essentially a 6-year extension with an option for a 7th year, which I guess is the compromise that Johan’s camp made.

The Mets knew what they were getting into here. None of this should have been a surprise to them.

    • I’m getting the sneaking suspicion, or rather I’ve had it all along, that no one has any idea whatsoever what is actually being discussed in this contract. Right now you could find an “up to date” report, that says 5 years. ESPN actually is writing that the holup is over a 6th year added onto 5. All along we heard 6 or 7, 5 came out of the woodwork a couple of times, and now 8. Whatever. Give me the terms when it’s done.

      • Danny says:

Yeah, I think the confusion is between “extension” and “contract”. Johan is already signed for 2008, so when you hear 5 years, that means an extension after 2008, or effectively a 6-year contract.

I think this is where a lot of the confusion is coming from.

  40. SevenTrain says:

74 hours of discomfort is a small price to pay for 7 years of bliss…

    • GravediggerHebner says:

You sound just like my mother on my 7th birthday when I complained about the quality of the presents.

  41. Wow, what a week. I’m a Giants and Mets fan and I can’t figure what to concentrate on more, Johan Santana or the Super Bowl!!!

  42. robmenna says:

Butterfield 8 tonight to celebrate fellas. I’m bartending. Hooking up all Met fans. 38th between 5th and Madison!!

COME ON JOHAN!!! SIGN!!! JUst grabbed a cold beer cause i DID SH&T at work today but refresh this website

  45. keystonetom says:

Any truth to the rumor that Johan was seen standing in line at at a bodega in Flushing?

  46. gometzies_18 says:

who granted the extension? was it Twins or MLB? ESPN reports Twins…

  47. ravin108 says:

    more drama cerrone!

  48. Kalihan42 says:

Can’t wait until this happens. I do not have to listen to the “Just make it happen people” and the “Stop being cheap and just sign him people”. Even if they were in complete agreement of wanting to sign a contract, when you are talking 150 million it is a SERIOUS contract. It can’t just be jotted down on a napkin with an IOU on top. There is a lot to figure out about how the money gets paid out. Finally, the anxiety will be over for the worriers.

    • cyclone says:

I will be happy when this happens just so i won’t have to hear the stupid phrase “Get Er Done!” again for awhile…

  49. ghobot says:

time out. . .seven with an optioned 8th year? i mean i get they had to. but wow. thats a massive contract.

    • ASod1975 says:

I’m thinking a six-year Mets deal with an option seventh year, making it a seven-year deal total with an option eighth year (since year 1 is the Twins contract plus Mets bonus money). At least that’s how I read it. Of course, I”ve been wrong before….

  50. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

IN OTHER NEWS: According to Rosenthal, Feliciano just signed to avoid ARBY– 1 year for 1.025M.

(Which makes me wonder who’s not in the room with the Johan Santanas.)

  51. KMMETS says:

espn news gonna talk about this next

  52. JPinOrlando says:

Did Johan request a list of the area schools yet? Maybe that is the hold-up?

  53. KMMETS says:

    why arent comments posting????

  54. icedrake523 says:

Matt, if you ever get the chance to meet Santana you have to print out comments from all these posts and show them to him.

    • da burg's greatest says:

dont…it will put ridiculous pressure on him and i dont want to risk having him fold under that…although he has to know going into this that he is being looked at as a messiah come to take us to the ship.

  55. brgnsoccer says:

Let’s play a game. Who can guess what’s going on in the conference room? Humor is allowed as long as its clean… also, refrain from curse words. Here’s my opinion:

    INSIDE THE CONFERENCE ROOM:

    Omar: Just sign the contract.

Santana’s agent: Not until we get that extra year.

Santana: I want to be a Met.

    Omar: Then sign the contract.

Santana’s agent: Not until we get that extra year.

Santana: I want to be a Met.

Omar: Then sign the contract already!

Santana’s agent: Not until we get that extra year.

Santana: Let’s do a staring contest… whoever wins decides the final decision.

    Omar: Deal!

    • brgnsoccer says:

      Omar: Pass the salt please.

      Santana: (Reaches for the salt)

Santana’s agent: (Elbows his player while whispering): Don’t do it…

      Omar: Please pass the salt.

Santana’s agent: Not until we get that extra year.

      • Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

Omar: Johan, I realize your last name is Santana. Have any songs you can play for us?
        Johan: Yes
        (Awkward Silence)

  56. rockets212 says:

    its being signed right now

  57. joland17 says:

Take out that Mount Blanc and sign away baby !!!!!

  58. TheOrangeChannel says:

I feel like that dog in the Bud Light commercial except that I’m saying “Santana! Santana! San….TANA! Please!!! Santaaaaaaana!” instead of “sausage.”

  59. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

hmmmm if they dont get johan this will be Omar and jeffs LAST SUPPER

    • TheOrangeChannel says:

And mine too as a Met fan. Just kidding. I’m a better person for all the disappointment. It’s like we’re a bunch of china on a dining table and someone always pulls the damn tablecloth out from under us.

  60. Mets_Rule85 says:

They are forcing him to eat liver and onions until he signs.

  61. Cool Breez says:

I just want this done and over with already…this WAITING GAME has sucked all the excitement I had about getting santana

  62. brooklynzfinest says:

freaking hell man, i want to go home…sign that shit dude…

  63. Bel-TRON says:

lol i love the supper update, cmon stop teasin us already and announce the deal!

matt ur doing a great job with the updates, keep em coming.
if santana goes to the bathroom we want to kno it! lol

  64. Joebaby says:

    “…Update…5:50 pm…

…for what it’s worth, supper has been delivered to the negotiating table…i kid you not… ”

    What did they order?

  65. stickguy says:

I have decided that the NO ALCOHOL warning labels on the pills I am taking for my back are really more of a guideline, not a rule.

I need a beer to get through this nonsense!

  66. Mets_Rule85 says:

Or, maybe they’re making him taste some nice NYC style cheesecake. He’ll fall in love with it, take 1 million a year, but 1 cheesecake per day.

  67. Kalihan42 says:

Di everyone catch the update that dinner was literally delivered to the negotiating room? Geez we are not going to know until 7 it looks like

  68. mackey_sassers_arm says:

Once this deal gets done, can we officially bury the Freddy Coupon nickname we have been dealing with for years? The guy isn’t afraid to spend money, he just didn’t want to spend it on garbage like zito and meche. We aren’t the yankees and thus, don’t have to anticipate Carl Pavano’s salary coming off the books next year.

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Yes indeed. When this deal gets signed we should never, ever hear about the Wilpons being cheap again. They ponied up for Piazza, Pedro, Beltran, Reyes and Wright when they didnt have to yet, and now for Johan freaking Santana. Arent we all glad now that we didnt foolishly spend on Zito? If we had signed Zito we wouldnt have Johan right now. We would be stuck with that bum and his albatross of a contract. The only gripe I had was with Vlad Guerrero. However I understood their hesitating due to his injury history. Zito as it turns out was a waste of money. They arent cheap, rather they just spend wisely. So all those who love to say Freddy Coupons, apologize and put it to rest. Lets Go Mets!

      • BSMITTYFDNY says:

And while on the subject of spending money wisely I hope Omar takes a second look at Kyle Lohse’s career numbers before going after him. He is garbage. The better signing is Livan Hernandez to a 1 or 2 year deal. He is a horse who eats 200 innings a year. Great for the fifth spot and allows for El Duque to go to pen and Pelfrey to pitch in AAA where he belongs this year. Wilpons=Smart Spenders

      • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Next sign Livan Hernandez. He is a smarter signing than Lohse who is terrible. Livan eats 200 innings a year and perfect for the 5 hole. Wilpons=Smart Spenders

  69. icedrake523 says:

They probably needed the extension because they couldn’t decide where to get takeout.

  70. zemonstar says:

omg they better have the press conference on tv and on DVD later if he gets signed :D i would totally buy it

  71. bigchart333 says:

i hope that for this supper, Johan says “dont worry guys, i got the check”

  72. bmfc1 says:

Chinese? Did they negotiate over who would pick up the check?

  73. It’s odd to me that the first we’ve heard of 8 yrs is coming from Rosenthal, who has really remained out of the mix, for the most part through this whole thing. That kinda leads me to buy it more than a lot of the other stuff, because it’s conceivable that this is the first time any solid info is actually available. I’m assuming that everything written by Stark or Olney was complete excrement.

  74. THolderWright55 says:

This will be a great day for New York Mets Baseball.

  75. KMMETS says:

maybe he’s asking if the new stadium will have International food stands?

  76. hyperion4 says:

Matt — did they say that champagne was being served with the supper?

  77. jtcuse44 says:

Great….next time plant a bug on the dinner tray….and we will be all set…

  78. bmfc1 says:

Chinese? And did they negotiate over who would pick up the check?

  79. jtcuse44 says:

BTW ….who uses the word supper anymore?….sorry it has been a long day..

    • ItsOurYear says:

i was thinkin the same thing

    • Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

according to wikipedia. Supper is the term used for a late evening meal around 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM whilst dinner is a term referenced for a meal around 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM

  80. Charlie says:

matt, what are you a fly on the wall outside the conference room or something?

  81. jlazar2 says:

    Maybe they are eating pizza

  82. metsfanatic says:

I heard they are driving around NY looking for Dominican Food. Duaner’s driving.

  83. Go Bro says:

If Subway sandwiches were the dinner that has just been delivered , my message to Johan is : “EAT THE SANDWICH!!!!!
    and “SIGN THE PAPER”

  84. x-nady says:

here we go again. Countdown. 1 hour.

This is like groundhogs day…which incidentally is tomorrow. Uh ohh.

    • K-Hern says:

hahahah…. can u imagine having to live this day over and over again???

      • x-nady says:

NO! I have so much heart burn right now. Can’t do that agian.

Anyway congrats all you positive, funny, intelligent posting mets fans. We really got him!

Ahhh what the hell. Congrats to all the anoying randy quaid like fans a la the movie major league too.

Now let’s just pass that physical with flying colors.

        I’m getting drunk tonight!!!!

        Johan!!!!

  85. JPinOrlando says:

I think the sticking point is that Santana wants to participate with the Pepsi Party Patrol once a month!

  86. Dino64 says:

I’ll have one of the Santana jerseys, freakin’ pinstripe jersey with the ol’57 on it.

Next to the 17 Hernandez ‘86 jersey, oh man, that’s my wardrobe for the next damn year!!

    COME ON!!!

    • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

DINO: Heh. After placing an order for Ye Olde 57 yesterday, I’ll have the same two in my regular rotation.

  87. chris1992 says:

The Mets can’t give up all those prospects just for one year with Santana

  88. KMMETS says:

Jon heyman sayign on SI.com its pretty much done. it has to be - they only ask for 2 more hours? they just need to cross the T’s and dot the I’s

  89. Metsgirl23 says:

They must be really work hard at it if they need to have dinner delivered. Its kinda like a trial and the jury can’t make a consective decision and were the audience pacing ourselves!

  90. Go Bro says:

If the dinner they just delivered is from SUBWAY, my message to Johan is: EAT THE SANDWICH!!!!!!!
    and SIGN THE PAPER.

  91. rebsoul says:

Im glad they are eating bc i threw mine up when 5 came and went without a signature…

  92. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

I’m having a disturbing mental image of everyone agreeing to the contract, backslapping and shaking hands, and just about to put a large, feathery pen to paper… just as a gigantic clock buzzes. It’s 7:01, and Santana gets magically whisked back to Minneapolis.

  93. ToastyJoe says:

Any truth to the rumor that they were thinking of ordering the shrimp fried rice and kung pao chicken, but negotiations broke down?

    • The deal was to order those dishes respectively for each party but then SPLIT an order of pork dumplings. Negotiations fell through when Santana’s agents discovered that they didn’t steam dumplings at this place, only fried.

  94. zemonstar says:

wow supper has been served? what’s next? tents have been delivered to the negotiating room?

  95. marvelousmarv says:

Can companies check how many times you refreshed a page….I think i’m on about 9,999.

  96. a says:

    I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SAYING.

  97. AppleInTheHat says:

This is almost as exciting as game 6 in Houston in ‘86

  98. TheOrangeChannel says:

I think they basically asked for the extension so that they could negotiate the appetizer. They’re just farking with us at this point. :)

  99. Pdrumm1616 says:

  100. mrosey says:

Updated at 6:10 PM: FOOD FIGHT! Johan is hurling pieces of Sesame Chicken at 95 mph across the room at Mets execs.

Fred dodges 3 in a row, then gets fooled on a nasty sesame changeup.

    • Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

Omar got stabbed in the eye with a chopstick, while wrestling with Peter Greenburg about who has better shoes. Turk Wendell came in and did a quadruple back flip while wrestling with a bear. He soon caused an avalanche after his bite to the bears neck made the bear yelp with extreme pain. Turk rescued them with shark tooth and all and carried them (In mid-air might I add) to taco bell. They are having the negotiations in the bathroom. God Bless You Turk!

  101. lefty says:

Um, why would they eat take out if they were so close to signing. You don’t think they’d sign then go out? Perhaps they’re settling in for another extension and negotiating into the night. It’s early for dinner.

  102. metsfanatic says:

He’s having a bagel, slice of pizza, eggroll, meat pie, quesadilla, shwarma sandwich. It takes awhile to eat all that. Contract gets messy.

  103. mbeli says:

Thanks Omar I’m starving and you don’t invite me!

  104. MetFanInDC says:

On more pressing news, what did they order?

    Sorry, just keeping busy.

  105. breadclock says:

We need another extension, please! Jeff Wilpon just spilled Red Bull all over the contract papers!

  106. metsfan05 says:

santana, since your eating supper dont get any grease on that damn contract! lol

  107. CaseStreet says:

Why isn’t SNY in the room?

  108. zemonstar says:

omg why did the picture of the pen disappear? it’s an omen!

  109. pedro4545 says:

Speaking of dinner….where the hell is my food I ordered like an hour ago?

  110. ToastyJoe says:

I heard they were talking about ordering the shrimp fried rice and kung pao chicken, but negotiations broke down when Johan wanted to add a scallion pancake.

  111. ItsOurYear says:

can this get done? am about to have a heart attack if htis goes longer and will never get to see him pitch in orange and blue

    its a done deal

  114. metfanatic86 says:

  115. mrosey says:

    This may be a repost:

Updated at 6:15: Johan Santana has initiated a food fight. He is hurling pieces of sesame chicken at Mets execs. Owner Jeff Wilpon was reported hit in the face by a slider.

  118. Coolpapabell says:

Wow Matt has got access! The man know that they odered dinner. What did they get? Did they oder anything over from Korea town in Willets points? Or did they have something brought in from Green fields on Northern Blvd?

This thing is going to get done, and I am pleased that we no longer see $170M mentioned. I think having a six year deal, including this year works out well, because the Mets stick their five year deal mandate, but Johan gets his six years of $22M.

Now, I truly can’t wait until Santana has his first bad game and everyone on here starts b* tching about him and the doom and gloom starts, saying we overpaid, blah blah blah, he’s overrated, blah blah blah. It’ll happen, believe me, always does…sorry to be negative, but this site does it to me. My own personal thoughts are I can’t wait to see him pitch, its great to have him aboard.

  123. Number41 says:

This is a great day in NY Mets history.

  128. mskinner says:

NEW YORK — The Mets and the agents representing Johan Santana were close enough to an agreement on a contract as the 5 p.m. ET deadline approached Friday that they requested and were granted a two-hour extension by the league office. A person familiar with the decision confirmed as much at 5:25 p.m.

But some 20 minutes later, a person with contacts in the office of Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, said, “It’s not done by any means,” and “It wouldn’t surprise me if it got done or didn’t.”

  129. KMMETS says:

Looks like another Beer down the hatch while i wait…

  132. MetsieFan84 says:

  135. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

I didn’t know if you guys knew this but Keith Hernandez entered the negotiation room yesterday. heres the recap.

    JERRY: Hellooo Newman.

KRAMER: I hate KEITH HERNANDEZ - hate him.

    NEWMAN: I despise him.

    ELAINE: Why?

NEWMAN: Why? I’ll tell you why…

KRAMER: Let me tell it ..

NEWMAN: No, you can’t tell it ..

KRAMER: You always tell it ..

    NEWMAN: All right, tell it.

KRAMER: Ja ja ja - just tell it

NEWMAN: June 14, 1987…. Mets Phillies. We’re enjoying a beautiful afternoon
in the right field stands when a crucial Hernandez error to a five run Phillies
ninth. Cost the Mets the game.

KRAMER: Our day was ruined. There was a lot of people, you know, they were
waiting by the player’s parking lot. Now we’re coming down the ramp … [cut
to film of the day - like the Zabruter film - with the Umbrella man and
everything - Oh so brilliant parody!!!] … Newman was in front of me. Keith
was coming toward us, as he passes Newman turns and says, ” Nice game pretty
boy.”. Keith continued past us up the ramp.

NEWMAN: A second later, something happened that changed us in a deep and
profound way front that day forward.

    ELAINE: What was it?

KRAMER: He spit on us…. and I screamed out, “I’m hit!”

NEWMAN: Then I turned and the spit ricochet of him and it hit me.

    ELAINE: Wow! What a story.

  136. Newyorkhippos says:

How much longer do you think until they anounce the contract?

  137. Number41 says:

Picture the great Santana on the mound at Shea.
How quickly we will forget the average and Bravo loving Glavine!
Santana and Pedro, followed by OP and Maine and then El D to finish out the week.
We shall be a team of great pitchers again!
The Oct nights will not have such a chill this year.
And we will close our house, the House that Gil Built, with a great sound of joy!

  138. CaseStreet says:

All my Mets fans yellin!! Bring em out! Bring em out! It’s hard to yell with

Isn’t it funny how no one has complained about signing Ruddy or Feliciano signings, ever since Santana came in the picture? What happened to Omar is biased, etc…?

Well, today is a new day in Metsblog.com and may all the naysayers, haters, bigots, tools, Skankees fans, and bandwagon jumpers stay away from our home away from home.

      Happy Johan Day!

Don’t know if you guys knew this but apparently Turk Wendell saved the deal. Omar and Green burg got into quite a tussle, Omar got stabbed in the eye with a chopstick, while wrestling with Peter Greenburg about who has better shoes. I guess Omar won at battlesh*ts and they got him! • BSMITTYFDNY says:

You are right about Livan. He would be great for the 5th spot. But thats for another day. Today we must all say thank you to Omar and the Wilpons. Omar, you pulled off one of the biggest steals of all time and definetly in Mets trade history. This almost makes up for Kazmir deal. Fred and Jeff, I applaud you both for opening the checkbook. You were geniouses for not spending foolishly on Zito and by doing so we now have the best pitcher on the planet. Anyone who ever calls them cheap again can meet me whenever, wherever you want to battle. We have the best owners in all of sports. I am going to Miami for game one with the #57 jersey on. 259. ASod1975 says:

It can’t be stated enough….a landmark day for the organization. Last year’s debacle was so tough to absorb as fans, and now the Mets finally have their ace. I work at a newspaper in southwest Florida, and the AP ran a story on Glavine about a minute after the Santana news moved. Saying how he truly feels at home again, blah blah blah. I truly can’t wait for the Mets to rock that poor excuse for a Met. I actually enjoyed his last two years with the team, until oh about, last September where he showed no heart and worse yet, no real emotion for sucking so bad down the stretch. Replacing that moldy old vet with Johan Santana? Unbelievable. Way to go Omar and the Mets brass for getting it done. Can’t wait until March 31, which living about an hour and a half away from Miami, I will be there! Let’s go Mets and if the Giants can somehow pull off the win on Sunday, it will probably be the best sports week I’ve had in a long time!

I am so pumped. Can’t wait t get my #57 jersey. And yes, this fan base should be officially over Scott Kazmir.

  268. gipper913 says:

Where is “Ih8fredwilpon” / “firemetsmanagement” now?

  269. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

lets get ready for the yankees to say something ridiculous like they might move Jeter to CF to try and take some coverage away from the Mets

  270. june14th1980 says:

Pedro Feliciano must feel great that the Mets spent 151M today on him and some other LHP

  271. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

hmmmm lets say Johan continues his dominance with the mets, could he go into the HOF as a met?

    • ASod1975 says:

If he remains for the duration of his contract and continues his dominance, he’ll have been here as long or longer than he was with the Twins, if I’m not mistaken. And if he helps the Mets win a World Series championship, it’s a done deal. As for now, I’ll take one stellar year from Johan and go from there….Let’s go Mets!

  272. dykstraw says:

so i said WHERE ARE THE METS FANS DRINKING IN MIDTOWN?

  273. etc79ny2302 says:

JUST HOPE THE PHYSICAL GOES ALRIGHT AND WE DON’T TO GET AN EXTENSION FROM MLB TO COMPLETE THAT AS WELL…..!!!…… GO METS !!!! THIS TAKES A LOT OF THE STING AWAY FROM LAST YEAR

  274. NickA33 says:

This is a defining moment for our organization, we finally landed the BIG FISH!!! With Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Santana, Martinez all on the up and up, our future looks VERY bright.

I just want this from us, the fans….we should vow to NEVER become like the Yankees. We’re going to continue to be a winning organization now, for years to come, unlike our up and down checkered past.

We can love our team. We can be verbose but we can never be what all Yankee fans are today.

What a great day to be a Met fan. Our bandwagon just got a lot larger…

  275. pete24 says:

Great day for all Met fans. Can’t wait to see the press conference. Willie now has his ace! Opening Day can not come soon enough.

  276. afama says:

I cant believe he is on the METS!!! IN THE NL, PITCHING AT SHEA, PITCHERS PARK!!!! Did I mention he can hit too!!!

Cant get the smile off my face!!!

All I can say is Omar……….. you da man!

  278. x-nady says:

Food for thought for all you superstitious synchronistic peeps:

1986: Giants Super Bowl Champs. Mets World Series Champs

2000: Giants Super Bowl Losers, Mets World Series Losers

    2008; Giants Super Bowl ? Mets…

What do YOU think? (dun, Dun, DUUUUUUN).

    • ghobot says:

too bad 1969 was the jets.

heres a question for the giants fans. would you rather get johan or have the giants win sunday?? even though the mets are my biggest obession, i have to say, i would take a giants win.

but put those two events together???????

      • x-nady says:

Thats right! Jets won in 69! Thats ok, that counts! Its another new york foot ball team.

        Feel da En-are-gee.

  279. Metsgirl23 says:

I definetly hope the Giants win the Super Bowl but everybody I ask who’s it going to be say Pariots! But many said we would would never get Santana and look what happened!

    • metskelly says:

Giants can win, People just pick the Pats cuz they give us no reason to think they will loose. I hope the giants can win though becuz im a steelers fan, and this season for them reminds me a lot of the 2005 steelers World Championshiip.

  280. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Won’t be attending the physical tomorrow, as long as we get minute-by-minute updates.

Hey, Matt– Can we get minute-by-minute updates?

    9:18 EST Santana turns head.
    9:27 EST Santana coughs.

    METSBLOG REACTION
darksun79: Why did he take so long to cough?

  281. Meddler says:

To put some emphasis on the impact of this acquisition, lets harken back to 2006. The defining moment of that season was a 10 game road trip that saw the Mets go 9-1 and get sublime performances out of two Cuban defectors who were fairly new to the Mets roster. Other than that, it was pretty good bullpen work and ridiculous hitting that completed that trip.

Well, with this projected Mets rotation, there’s a reasonable degree of probability that this team can have some sort of insane 10 day stretch where the starters give up like, 7 ER, or something ridiculous like that. Any of the five guys, to varying degrees, can be completely shut down dominant on any given night. Odds are there will be at least one nice stretch where its just back-to-back-to-back-to-back brilliance. Perhaps more than one.

    • Phantaroth says:

I’m projecting 161 wins for our rotation. 1 Win for Heilman.

      • Meddler says:

        HAHAHA! Well put.

I do think that Heilman is an important factor that gets missed. It almost seemed like an assumption at some points that he was going to be the third or fourth piece in any deal. But he wasn’t.

I understand the bullpen was awful down the stretch last year, but statistically they were just about average by the end. It was really a pretty solid first half, and a dreadful second half. Now you know you have at least one day a week where most of the bullpen doesn’t even have to think about warming up. You slide Santana right between El Duque and Pedro, and you’ll have lots of late inning ammo no matter when they reach 100 pitches.

Can you imagine if Omar had pulled the trigger on the Blanton deal now? we’d have Joe friggin’ Blanton instead of Johan Santana and Deolis Guerra instead of Heilman. Everything would be on Sanchez in the pen and Pedro in the rotation. Now, Sanchez is the difference between a solid bullpen and a shut down effective bullpen. Pedro and El Duque are the difference between a good rotation and a ridiculous rotation.

  282. Go Bro says:

February should be forever known as St. Omar Santana Day.
Who were those guys that said it wouldn’t go down this week because of the Super Bowl?
I’m still betting that they will have the signing press conference next week probably on Wednesday since the Giants will have the parade in lower Manhattan on Tuesday for winning the Super Bowl.

  283. metskelly says:

This trade is exactly what the Mets and us fans needed. Going into this season before this, my only hopes were that we could somehow win the division with about 86 wins, and probably loose in the playoffs. Now this trade gives the Mets and the fans the same feeling of excitement we had going into the 2006 season. Im so excited, and all I can say is I will be counting the seconds just to watch spring training games, waiting for the actual season is going to be torture. LETS GO METS!!!

  284. june14th1980 says:

CBS Sportsline has 7 years - 150.75M. The fraction makes it sound more real.

    • gipper913 says:

Many reports have that number…it would include the seven million signing bonus and the 13.5 mil he was going to get in 2008 plus the oft reported 6 yrs at $22 mil per annum.

  285. JohnMilner says:

What’s with all of the blank posts?

Congrats to the Mets for pulling this deal off. And congrats to all of us Mets fans everywhere!

  286. whynot says:

Here in Atlanta nobody I’ve wished a ‘Happy Johan Santana Day’ to has been as gleeful as I. Go figure.

  287. Metsfan34 says:

Its about damn time that they got this done. Omar Minaya earned his money on this one. A lot of people have made coments in the past that he is just a product of having the money to spend but this trade proves that he can get things done and that Mets ownership is willing to pay the price to win. Kudos to both Omar and the Wilpons. I predict Santana wins 20-25 games and the NL East crown is ours once again. Im not going to say we win the NL or the World Series but if our rotation stays healthy (Pedro) and our bullpen is solid well be tough for anyone to beat. LETS GO METS!!!

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

If we get Livan Hernandez too then we have a stacked rotation and El Duque to the pen makes the pen stacked as well. Either way great job Omar and Jeff!

  288. Metro41 says:

    Matt -

Thank you and your team of bloggers for your oustanding work and dedication. Let’s hope that Metsblog provides a platform that enables you to “crossover” into the mainstream media so you can earn a nice paycheck. Like Howie Rose, it would be very nice for a fan to be able to turn one of their passions into a career.

    Metro41

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Agreed. Great job by Matt and his cohorts, Omar, and the Wilpons. Also great job by Johan for putting the pressure on Bill Smith to trade him to us and signing the contract. Its nice to have a pitcher of his stature want to be a Met. Like with Pedro this may cause other players in the future to want to be a part of this team. Tex in 09? Sorry, I know I am getting greedy.

      • x-nady says:

Absolutely Dead On. And don’t be greedy. We will have a lot of holes to fill in 09. Why no shoot for Tex. The Prospect of playing with Santana, Pedro (assuming he is resigned and effective), Wright, Beltran & Reyes is going to be a strong draw. And if this lineup hit like I think this lineup can and they slice through the NL east, half the work is already done for Omar.

  289. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I just tried to get a Johan jersey on mets.com but he isnt available yet. And when i tried to customize it by putting his name and #57 i got a mesage saying something like its against mlb rules with players on other teams and blah blah blah. I guess by tomorrow maybe the Santana Met jersey will be available or maybe after physical. Either way I want one.

  290. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Also Mets.com is saying annual salary is something like 19.8 mil. or there abouts. If its really under 20 mil then what a steal. Doubt it though.

  291. ReasonableYanksFan says:

As a Yankees fan, I think this trade makes the Mets on paper better than the Yankees possibly. I’m just wondering what (intelligent) Mets fans think, I’m excited about the season most of all and glad its the Mets who got him and not the Sox, or we might as well pack up and start again in 2011. A little more than Yankees suck or things like that would be appreciated, I know its a Mets blog…

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

To me the Yanks have a better line-up but we have a better rotation and other than Mariano probably a better bullpen as well. I see the Yanks having a tough time getting past Boston for a few years to get to the world series. And in my opinion the D-Backs will be the Mets biggest obstacle in the NL as they have improved their rotation tremendously and have a great young line-up as well.

    • innaword says:

Fret not Yankee fan. You still have the best shortstop in the city and the Mets managed to keep theirs.

I know this is an unpopular sentiment among fellow Mets fans, but Captain Jeter would have never let a 7-game lead with 17 to go slip away like it did.

Yeah, on paper–Santana makes us strong. But the only way we erase last fall’s fallout is to get to the post-season. And there’s 162 to go before then.

    • NickA33 says:

      Yankees Suck! (kidding)

I think it, with out a doubt, makes us better (on paper) than the Yankees. Start w/ the rotation…

      Santana - Wang. Advantage Santana
      Martinez - Mussina. Push
      Perez - Pettite. Advantage Perez
Maine - Hughes? - Tough to call. Maine was a 15 game winner, so for now, I’ll go Maine. But Hughes has potential to be an eventual #1. In time, Hughes. Today, Maine.
      El Duque - Joba(pen?). Joba

Offensively it’s close but guys like Damon, Abeu, Giambi are all getting older. As are Castillo and Alou. But overall I have to say that the Mets are well rounded where as the Yanks are mostly about the power game.

Hands down Rivera is the best closer.

Our BP is better as well.

It’s close but I really do believe that we’re a better team on paper and we’ll find out soon enough. Good luck this year but if I had to bet, I’d say Boston wins the division and the Wild Card will probably come from the Central.

But this is why we play the game right?

    • gipper913 says:

Since you came in with the right attitude….

Sure, I think we’re thrilled that the Mets landed Santana but realistic enough to know nothing is guaranteed in baseball.

We still have questions (Will Ollie and Main progress or regress? Will the pen be improved? Will Delagdo rebound? Will Church/Schnieder be glaring holes in the lineup? Will Pedro’s health hold up? Will Johan have a tough first year adjusting the NYC and big contract pressures?).

As for the Yankees, I actually agree it is good for baseball that Johan didn’t go to the Sox. You may disagree, but I also think it is good for baseball he didn’t go to the Bronx either.

It will be interesting, to say the least, to see if Hank and the Yankee fanbase can be patient to see Cashman’s strategy through the tough times. Personally, I think Cashman did the right thing with Johan and has the right idea….but neither Steinbrenner(s) nor Yanks fans are generally known for their patience.

      Good luck this year….nah, I didn’t mean that….but I tried.

  306. Charlie says:

    Matt,

You nailed it from the beginning. I have nothing but the highest respect for you and your journalistic/blog abilities. Wow! You were essentially the only one to continue to believe/think the Mets would be the team to win the JS sweepstakes and every step of the way you essentially called/predicted/sourced the outcome.

    Did I say wow, yet?

  307. metsrmyboys says:

now santana is a met big sigh of relief
buy minaya’s job isn’t done yet is perez signed for this year and if he is he needs an extension i believe sosa will need one. we need a long term deal for maine and heilman i mean htere is others too what i am trying to say get a nice day of rest and a short vaction but your job is no where nears done.

  308. metsfaneh says:

If you consider the fact that if Johan had a typical Johan season in 08′ the Mets would have willingly had to pay at least $25 per over 6 to 7 years and had to surrender their 1st rd pick as compensation. Looking at this scenario we could consider Guerra and the 1st rd pick a wash, IF Gomez AND Mulvey reach their ceiling they would be fair market value for a dominant Leftie that can field and hit. This leaves essentially a sale of Humber for $18 to $21 million. Looks pretty good to me!!! If Gomez/Mulvey are busts it an absolute heist. Looking down thhe road as we fans tend to do the $$$ and 1st rd pick saved combined with Delgado’s salary coming off the books would be an excellent start to bringing in a power hitting gold glove winning first baseman that currently plays in Atlanta for the Citifield opening in 2009.

  309. june14th1980 says:

Another angle to look at is how the contact affect the luxury tax situation.

The 7M bonus is prorated over the entire contact, although I’m not sure if a portion is spread over 2008 because the contact with the Twins was not ripped up.

Either way, it will count around 13.25 to 14.5M against the 2008 luxury tax calcuation and an average of 23.5-23.75M from 2009-2013.

As of today, it would seem that the commissioner’s office will report the Mets with a opening day payroll under 135M - 20M under the luxury tax theshold.

  310. MetsSox says:

Hate to tell you buddy, but Sox fans don’t care about not getting Santana. They didn’t need him, they’re still the best team in baseball, and they’re just glad the Skanks didn’t get them.
