News: Two More Hours
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 1, 2008 5:04 pm

The Mets have been granted an additional two hours to negotiate a contract extension with Johan Santana.

…i have to assume this means that a deal was not actually agreed to by the 5 pm deadline…however, for them to peg down an additional two hours, it would suggest that they’re super close, and just needed some additional time to get it right…

…i have heard from a few different people that santana is in New York City, but not at the negotiations, though i have been unable to confirm that with anyone connected to the team

In the future, can they make these deals on either a Wednesday or Thursday so I won’t be at work waiting. My Bosses would greatly apprecieate it!

    • smark919 says:

I’m actually not that worried. It was much more tense when dealing with the trade itself. I think this will get done by 7, i have no doubts about it. He better pitch well, the pressure is definitely on.

Just a thought…….. who starts the first game of the year?

If Pedro starts game 1, then Johan’s first start at Shea is opening day. If Johan starts game 1, then Pedro starts the home opener and Johan’s first start at Shea would be Saturday the 12th.

if they blow this im just going to become a fan of whatever team mike piazza signs with.

  21. Charlie says:

remember, the league office only grants extensions when a deal is imminent.

  22. MarcRabbi says:

I cannot believe this isnt done yet…

its like the mets brass was taken by surprise on what Johan wanted… DIDNT THEY KNOW WHEN THEY DEALT FOR HIM? THAT HE WANTED RECORD MONEY? THIS IS AMAZING…

  28. stoney says:

This is a good sign that they’re close though. It’ll get done… but not before we’ve all torn our guts out

  29. njmatt says:

wow, I mean this is just getting ridiculous

this isn’t Kris Benson, we aren’t overpaying for a mediocore pitcher and setting the market high

we are talking about paying the best pitcher in baseball. He should get the most money in baseball. That’s how it works.

    • sincekindergarten says:

      Tums? That’s for rookies . . .

I’m into double Protonix! (40 mg per)

  30. cgroovin says:

the worst part is… we have to live through the agony of hoping all the players pass their physicals now. this is never ending!

  31. toomanyuniforms says:

Two hour extension means they’re ironing out final details. Not to worry. We’ll hear about a deal at around 7:30, barring another hour-long extension. RELAX.

  32. mr_hellcat says:

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit crystal meth.

  33. QnsNative718 says:

    hahaha… i love it.

  34. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

harper from DNL said the mets will NOT go over the 5 yrs and thats the sticking point

  35. mets6986 says:

YEP… Two more hours of agony… Someone give me a gu… or a beer…. LOL

  36. stickguy says:

hopefully that dude that posted on the last thread about Johan wanting an opt out after 3 years was wrong. That would be really cheesey to ask for.

If you insist on holding the team by the short ones to get the biggest deal in pitching history, at least lock it up for the full term.

Or if you think it is OK to opt out, make it mutual. After 3 years, the Mets have the option to cancel it too.”

Doubt that last one has any chance of happening!

  37. mr_hellcat says:

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit playing Russian roulette.

  38. kowalski69 says:

Johan Santana is across the table from me, playing beer pong

    • chicowalkersucksballs says:

I enjoyed a bagel with Johan this morning, and then we strolled over to the Guggenheim and took in the Thannhauser Collection. Such a delightful young fellow.

      • Metsgirl23 says:

So its all your fault why we didn’t get the deal done in time and now we have to suffer another two hours of not knowing! Instead of having breakfast with him you should have him sign the dam contract so we can all relax!

  39. BBmetsfreak36 says:

im pretty sure its going to get done now. but they had 2 and a half days please.

  40. mr_hellcat says:

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit Russian roulette….

    • JarvisJanesAddiction says:

Damn! I watched “The Deer Hunter” just this morning! I’m gonna pull a Christopher Walken and blow my brains out if this deal doesn’t get done! More cowbell!

  41. Constnza81V2.0 says:

And this is exactly why the Mets have zero change of ever acquiring a top-line pitcher on the open-market. They drag their feet WAY too much and even when their the only ones in the room, they seem to like to be deliberate.

  42. jimrebel44 says:

“…an unconfirmed rumor is that Johan is holding out for a bobble head doll day each year…”

  43. BBmetsfreak36 says:

o b/c i only started metsblogging after the deadline

  44. cuervo says:

yes… the fact that a) an extension was granted and B) its only 2 hours.. means they are pretty much agreed to 99% of the contract. They probably have money all agreed to , its just how they are going to either compensate for not guranteeing a 6th year (player option after year 3, less money per year, more signing bonus, perhaps a clause that states johan will be highest paid pitcher year 6 & 7 (player option year 6, team option year 7)

  45. rockets212 says:

hey this is good, this means they are so close it will not collapse, just needs alittle more time, so its 99.99999999999% sure its happening, just the extra 2 hours of waiting will be so tough.

  46. nevets72 says:

I would interperit the 2 hour extension as: “It is done. We need to review all the deal point to be sure we are in complete agreement and then we will anounce.”

If they were not that close, they would ask for a little more time than 2 hours, like perhaps a day.

  47. TwinsFan33 says:

Thanks for all the laughs… I’ve enjoyed watching you all sweat…

  48. Sethuel says:

Ken Rosenthal puts Santana at the meetings, but who knows.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

yeah, some people clearly don’t understand the phrase:

“Comment moderation is enabled. Your comment may take some time to appear.”

  51. Charlie says:

    want to hear pathetic?

i’m going to the heat-nets game tonight in miami. now that there has been this two hour extension, i’ll have to hear about it via blackberry. damn.

  52. Sylow59 says:

this is probably Omar getting even with all of us for the comments since, well, you know.

  53. TwinsFan33 says:

    sweat, sweat, sweat Mets fans

  54. metchamp78 says:

The extension is a good sign that a deal is close but the Mets seem to be leary of reaching that luxury tax threshold. I htink that is crazy because the Mets will be so rich from signing Santana, they drew 3.8 million Santana will push that well over 4 mil, SNY ratings will skyrocket bringing in a unfiltered cash flow, AND they have a new stadium opening.

With all that I don’t get the hold up here. Santana becomes the best player/pitcher ever to wear the uniform and a sure fire Hall of Famer.

    STOP PINCHING PENNIES!!!!

    • rockets212 says:

pinching pennies? its pinching millions lol

    • Hellbelly says:

Great pitcher, indeed. But a certain former Met set the record for having the highest percentage of votes ever for a Hall of Fame election.

      Don’t get ahead of yourself.

      • metchamp78 says:

If you don’t think Santana is goin to the Hall then your nuts. He may win more MORE cy youngs in the NL. That alone punches his ticket.

        • Hellbelly says:

Who said he wouldn’t me the Hall of Fame?

What I responded to was this “Santana becomes the best player/pitcher ever to wear the uniform ”

That tells me you never saw Seaver pitch.

        • metchamp78 says:

No I didn’t see Seaver pitch, God bless him he was great. Johan would be the closest thing to Seaver that I have seen. I did see Gooden but he didn’t live up to expectations. Given that state of the Mets coming off last year and heading into Citifield, I think this is the biggest move in met history and I believe Santana will end up being the best pitcher in team history

        • Hellbelly says:

I hope you are right, don’t get me wrong.

But keep in mind that our very own Tom Seaver had the highest percentage of votes ever to be accorded to a player in his first year of eligibilty. EVER!

That tells you the sort of regard that Seaver was held in by folks who watched him. A higher percentage than Koufax, than Gibson, than Carlton, than Palmer, that Spahn, than anybody.

          He was just unbelievable.

No doubt Santana is on way to Hall of Fame. But “best pitcher in team history” is a tall order.

        • metchamp78 says:

I think Johan is capable of having a similar impact. Maybe not Seaver’s numbers but overall I think he will be huge for the mets going forward.

I say that because of this thought:

When was the last time the Mets actually built a team around a certified ace pitcher?

They have always gotten everything else and then tried to make an ace out of scraps.
I like Bobby Jones but he was not an ace.
I like Al Leiter but again not an ace.
Pedro is great but he’s no longer an ace.

Johan’s effect not only makes us a better team but it makes us elite.

The Mets have not had that luxury since really David Cone.

This team has tried and tried to no avail to win without having a top of the rotation horse and now those days could be over.

Thats why I think that Johan could be bigger than Seaver was for the Mets.

        • Hellbelly says:

here’s where the Mets were prior to Seaver’s arrival in ‘67

          Last in ‘62
          Last in ‘64
          Last in ‘64
(all of these years verging – or, in the case of ‘62 setting the standard – for ineptitude
          Last in ‘65
WE MADE IT TO 9TH PLACE IN ‘66! (that was a huge accomplishment, believe someone who was rooting for them back then)

You cannot imagine the impact that Seaver had on this team when he arrived in ‘67. Yeah, the team still sucked, but he was a star and you knew it immediately.

By ‘68 we were back in 9th and then came ‘69.

We might not have had an ace the last couple of years but we had some decent pithcers. Before Seaver came in ‘67 we had as our stud pitchers Al Jackson, Jack Fisher and Dennis Ribant.

Seaver gave us credibility when we had NONE.

    • DjDeF says:

I am pretty sure they aren’t that close to the luxury tax threshold. When it started it was like 150 and has continually gone up. I believe it is 175 mill or higher and the Mets are anywhere near that.

      • metchamp78 says:

The threshold this year is 155 mil. The mets when you add the abritration numbers will be at 118 mil. Add 13.8 for Santana and the possible signing of Kyle Lohse and the Mets will come very close to it

    • nevets72 says:

      Talking about pinching…

  62. Innis_2_winnis says:

Makes you wonder if Johan/Mets ASKED for 2 hrs specifically, or if they were only GRANTED two hours. I hope the former instead of the latter. I have a hard time believing that they would only be given 2 hours if they were truly far apart. This has got to be a good sign….means they’re close…just want to cross the t’s and dot the i’s.

  63. cuervo says:

I heard Johan asked Omar to take him to the best dominican restaurant with the best Mofongo and he will make his decision.. dammit OMAR.. JU KNOW WHAT IM SAYIN???

  64. JPinOrlando says:

On the flip side…….beers will be flowing tonight either way!

    >Santana, the source says, is adamant that he deserves a vastly superior deal to Giants lefty Barry Zito, who signed a seven-year, $126 million free-agent contract last off-season.<

Know what? I dont want this greedy a-hole anymore.
Zito’s deal was ludicrous, it was ludicrous if he were Santana.

    • huge_mets_fan11 says:

Honestly its not his fault that the Giants gave him that ludricrous contract. And he does deserve more money then Zito. The guy is unbelievable and no one should ever say that they don’t want him.

  70. toomanyuniforms says:

Looks like you picked the wrong week to beat a joke to death.

  71. metsdude13 says:

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Santana IS in negotiations with the Mets directly. I think that’s a good sign – he’s coming on to close the deal

  72. Helped Keith Move says:

who’s game for a Johan Santana goatee day?

  73. TwinsFan33 says:

Everyone go out and have your fun… this deal will happen.

The Twins and the Mets orgs both know this can’t fail… a PR debacle for both teams if it would

Boy, it will sure be fun having Scott Baker starting at our season opener… “Scott who?” you say…..

    Exactly!

  74. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i feel like if this falls through it would be like experiencing the entire month long september collapse in 2 hours.

  75. Just imagine going through this in those dark, cold, days before Metsblog.
*Well, there’s college basketball on ESPN, FSNY is showing monster truck rally, all the networks have soaps on. NY1, maybe? No. Mike and Dog are discussing horseracing and tennis. Maybe if i go buy the Post it’ll say something different than the News did? ugh*
Thank God now we can dawdle in such a manner that it feels kind of constructive.

  76. mrmet423 says:

lock him up, let’s go just do it already, whatever it takes, so that this celebration can officially begin already…

  77. DjDeF says:

Heading out of work. 90 minutes left I will be refreshing all 90 minutes home. Lets hope it is less then that and it is good news.

  79. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

  86. caitmo says:

Ken Rosenthal just reported on SNY that Johan IS in the building he arrived to finish the negotiations himself at 4pm est.

Surprised Matt hasn’t reported this… why follow M&MD but not SNY?!?!

  87. Metsfan34 says:

This is absolutely rediculous. The Wilpons new what they were getting into when they traded the guy. It should not take this long to get the deal done. The Mets need him so bad they should just say look what will it take and give it to the man. He is going to pay for himself with extra ticket sales and merchandise anyway.

  88. Metsgirl23 says:

Once this deal happens lets all have our Raining parade if we haven’t already!

  89. gipper913 says:

    Time for the heavy ammunition….

Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

  90. Mr. Mets Butler says:

Not worried at all. Think about it guys. If they were really far apart in the negotiations, don’t you think they would have been granted another 24 hrs. at least. Two hours tells me they are very close and may have actually agreed on terms already and just need time to draw up the contract or fill out some additional paperwork.

I’m just gonna sniff the can of semi-gloss paint I have in the shed till it’s settled! No…I’m not nervous.

  91. steve333 says:

Funny that most here blame wilpon for this taking so long and not Santana.
    Johan is a greedy bitch.

  92. Mr. Mets Butler says:

ESPN reporting deal is done per METS! No details disclosed yet. Praise OMAR!! Woo-Hoo!!

  93. The Captain says:
