Read: Gomez reacts to trade
By Chris Mazzone - Feb 1, 2008 1:21 am

Kelly Theiser at MLB.com writes about Carlos Gomez’s reaction to the trade and how excited he is about the opportunity to be an every day center fielder.

Theiser quotes Gomez as saying…

“The only thing I heard about was Santana, Santana, Santana. Nothing in the news was said about Gomez, or nothing about the other players traded to the Twins. But I think all us prospects have the tools to play in the big leagues.”

…after signing with the Mets at the age of 16, gomez probably feels a bit scorned…but,  it seems like he’ll embrace the possibility of playing centerfield every day for the Twins...i wish him well and fully expect him to develop into a solid ball player…

He must feel bad but he has a great oppurtunity in Minnesota. I think I speak on behalf of all Met fans when I say I hope he succeeds.

    • MetsFanInVegas says:

Agree, I hope he goes on to have a great season/career with the Twins

    • gbaked says:

i can say with 100% confidence, that when gomez plays against the mets, for the first time at the citi, he will get a great ovation.

      • ebfnyc says:

Really? … I think people won’t really notice. Realistically, he may have a shot at the 08 team. By the time the Twins come to town in 09 when he will probably definitely be on the team, nobody will really notice. He is a .250 MLB hitter (and I’m being generous).

        • kowalski69 says:

gomez got a great reception in 07 and will not be forgotten. he had a lot of buzz around him and i remember his first big league game.

i remember at least one ‘CAR-LOS-GO-MEZ’ chant.

i remember an amazing catch that he made at yankee stadium to save a home run.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

lets not go nuts here people geez, the guy wasnt even on the big squad for a whole season. if anything we’ll give him an ovation for being a major chip in the deal while laughing at the same time when we look at the score board and see his 270 batting average.

    • ebfnyc says:

The best part about MINN is that they are leaving their dome for an open-air Stadium. Brilliant. Better get some UnderArmour ColdGear.

    • thrilledge 4 prez says:

milledge is, was and will always be better than gomez

      • cyclone says:

Twins didn’t seem to think so, otherwise Milledge wouldn’t have been traded for a catcher who hits .240 and a platoon outfielder.

Milledge isn’t going to amount to anything special. Believe it.

        • gowrightgo says:

To be honest…I think they both have great promise. Millz can evolve over time (3 more years) into something like a poor mans Sheffield in terms of his power average and skills. I do not think he is a 30hr guy in his future but I do see a guy who can put up high 20 hrs with 90-110 rbi depending on the team he is on with a .300 avg and .375 OBP. He has more polish as a hitter right now than he is getting credit for. As to Gomez…some say Han Ram is his high side. I do not see that though he definitely has the build to grow into. I’d say he becomes something closer to Alex Rios than Hanley Ramirez. Think something like 22-25 hrs, 80-100 rbi, great defense with a .265 Ba and .330 OBP. I like em both

        • 86_revisited says:

Lastings Milledge will be Jay Payton. hit 280 – 310 with 15 or so homers, steal 10 – 15 bases, play solid defense. There are a bunch of those guys floating around MLB including Ryan Church who we got back. I think the Milledge trade will end up going down as the Church trade when all is said and done. And no matter what the casual fan thinks, Schneider is a big upgrade over LoDuca. The fans love LoDuca’s fire and personality, but Schneider is a better catcher and ball player plus younger and healthier and not on PEDs.

        • The Captain says:

The fans loved Loduca’s fire and personality? OK honestly speaking, all that club house fire and those outgoing media interviews were entertaining, but who really gives a darn. The fans liked Loduca’s half way decent bat and what Met fans havnt seen in years, once in a while a botched stolen base attempt.

  2. hsimms says:

Hey Carlos. If you are lookin. We love you. Maybe, someday, you come home.

  3. 3lixer. says:

I was always a Gomez fan and was looking forward to a Gomez, Beltran, Milledge outfield before this off season. With speed like that there wouldn’t be any gaps. I’m glad we got Santana though and hopefully it pays off.

    • ebfnyc says:

Milledge was a good trade because he need to join a team with other misfits. They cancel each other out and all behave. In NY he was trouble. Now we acquired a good receiver and Paul LoDuca with his age, steroids and torn knee can sit the DC bench (good foresight Omar) . Let’s go Mets! Shout out to Tina, we are starting our own team.

    • anditsouttahere says:

      it will pay off

    • The Captain says:

Yeah but what would happen when Milledge’s speed actually got him to the ball? He looked like a bad news bear.

  4. HelloBrooklyn says:

Didnt he just get married a few months ago? I heard something like Alou being at his wedding. Maybe he was close to him and a few others. I remember him horsing around with Reyes.

It would be great if he’s their starting centerfielder.

    • PDubs says:

Alou was his best man. Professional sports can be a tough business sometimes. I wish Carlos all the best, he def has a world of talent.

It’s a shame that we couldn’t get Johan without sacrificing Gomez.

      Hopefully everyone is happy.

      • ebfnyc says:

Is everybody in this room nuts?

        • nrmax88 says:

I dont know about everybody, but you definitely are pretty nuts. I will be laughing when Gomez is putting up Hanley Ramirez numbers.

        • JNGordon says:

I think of Gomez as more of a Kenny Lofton type. I think he will be an excellant defensive player, and a slightly above average hitter. An everyday Endy Chavez.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

ebfnyc, everyone here is nuts. when we had the guy everyone said he’d amount to nothing and he was a “light hitting corner OFer” now we traded him and some dopes on this blog are comparing him to arguably the best hitter in the entire NL east. the same thing happened when we traded milledge suddenly the guy was going to be a 40-40 stud. everyone always wants something they cant have.

        • The Captain says:

Anyone who thinks Miledge and Gomez would flurish together this year was in for a rude awaking. They are both still years away from becoming quality players. Hopefully oneday they both find their groove, but not this year, and not both concurrently.

  5. Despite whatever ties he may have felt to the Mets organization, Minnesota really is a perfect spot for Cargo to land. The fans out there are faithful and attentive, but the pressure not immense, and he’ll have his shot to start. If he were thrust at this phase of his development into a starting spot in NY, for instance if Alou went down, the scrutiny around him would be much greater, and the patience for his progression and maturation non-existent. In Minny, he should be embraced and really given a chance to flourish. I hope he learns some patience at the plate, cuz if he does he’ll be a fine player. Good luck, Cargo

  6. ebfnyc says:

Gomez is Endy Chavez waiting to happen. He may have more power, but he won’t use it for more than .250 max.

    • I didn’t say great player, I said fine player, and maybe better if he can completely re-approach his PA’s.

      • ebfnyc says:

So you are saying he is fine, however, he needs to relearn how to get up at bat and do his job?

        • No, I said that IF he could “relearn how to get up to bat and do his job” he would become a fine player. As of now he is fast, has a nice arm, and an indistinguishable amount of pop that could develop if he makes contact on a more consistent basis and swings at less low percentage pitches. I don’t think that it is entirely out of the realm of possibility that someone as young as Gomez is could develop a considerable amount of patience and aptitude at the plate. He’s 22. I believe a certain Jose Reyes developed alot of batting acumen post-age 22 and post-58 MLB games. (Not to even begin to suggest that he has what Reyes does) One thing I stumbled upon: Gomez AA OPS: 772 (age 20), Hanley Ramirez AA OPS: 720 (age 21). I use Hanley as an example of someone who was seen to have a lot of issues at the plate, both with patience and mechanics at a similar age, and very quickly matured into an elite player at his position.

      • nrmax88 says:

Gomez will be a stud. I am not even going to argue right now but I will tell all of you that. He will be a great player, a la Hanley Ramirez or Alex Rios. You guys will see. And if that happens this trade isnt bad at all for the Twins, whether the other 3 even make the majors or not. I almost hope Johan doesnt sign a contract and just goes back to minnesota. He is being too greedy.

  7. TenTonHammer says:

What’s the point in trashing the kid? Does it really serve a purpose now?

He’s a good kid. The Mets are all he’s known since he signed. He’s probably a little irked at it.

What if Wright got traded. He was a Mets fan before he was in the system. He’d be crushed too.

    • ebfnyc says:

Wright is very good. Gomez isn’t very good. So if he is going to come out and be surprised that the media feels he isn’t worth talking about… maybe he should keep that to himself and learn to hit for more than .232. The kid can bunt though. I will give him that.

      • When he was 21, as Gomez was last year, Willie Mays hit .236.
Point is, you can’t even begin to sniff any solid evaluation of a player’s skillset based on his batting average through 50-some games in an undefined role at age 22, not to mention when the player in question was not meant to be in the bigs, but had to due to injury.

      • TenTonHammer says:

Gomez said nothing wrong. Saying he feels they all have the tools to be in the majors is something that should be held against him and trashed for?

So what if he hit .232. He had no right being above Triple A, but he was asked to perform when the team needed a body out there, and he more than held his own out of necessity, including outstanding defense.

  8. No, I said that IF he could “relearn how to get up to bat and do his job” he would become a fine player. As of now he is fast, has a nice arm, and an indistinguishable amount of pop that could develop if he makes contact on a more consistent basis and swings at less low percentage pitches. ALright its 445 am…i am wasted and i should get to dsleep….i will probably have nightmares tonight that johan doesnt sign and wake up in a cold sweat…in that case ill be back in a few hours…please just get htis done already fred.

  10. Number41 says:

Johan Santana; Welcome to The New Yorl Mets !!!
    Rock on, dude!

  11. nrmax88 says:

The funny thing is Carlos, dont unpack yet. Largely different from yesterday, I have a strange feeling this might not get done. Johan is being a greedy little punk. 170 mil? LOL.

170 mil? Screw you Johan. And Johans agents. Not even a free agent go back to Minnesota and play your last year and then go too free agency if its only about the money. I hope Omar tells him and his agents to take a walk. Havent really wanted him since this whole thing started. How does Alex Rodriguez take so much heat for opting out during the world series, but nobody mentions whata little diva Johan is. He has been complaining like a little girl all year, then he holds his team hostage all winter, then he demands the biggest contract ever while he isnt even on the open market.

    • UncleMuscles says:

      get a life.

      • nrmax88 says:

I love how me not wanting to give out 170 million dollars to a pitcher who will turn 30 soon, and is not even a free agent somehow makes me not have a life. Why, because I think rationally and realize that just because you get the best pitcher in the world it doesnt mean you won the deal? You can buy a sick ferrari, but if it costs 100 K and you buy it for half a mil then you got hosed man. You think it is responisble for the Mets to give Johan a 7/170 deal?

“But I’m sure once he signs you’ll be giddy like a little girl”

Thats fair, and true. I havent wanted him from the get go, but once they traded for him I was still very excited. Hate losing Guerra and Gomez, but still excited to see Johan. But he is just acting like such a stuck up little diva. I dont really know what other word to describe it. He pulled a Vince Carter and demanded to be traded and some even say that he wasnt motivated and didnt try hard at the end of the year. But okay, you are right, I will root for him and be excited when he pitches, but that doesnt mean I am willing to pay him any amount that he wants.I would be more then happy with a 5 year 125 million dollar deal. I would prefer not to go to 6 years, no way 7 years, and if Johan wouldnt budge on the 170 mil thing, I would tell him no thank you. So, how does this equate to me not having a life again?

      • nrmax88 says:

Also, how come you didnt just rationally explain to me how come you disagree. I didnt personally attack you, so whats with the “name calling”? If you disagree and think they should get it done at all costs, even if it means giving out 170 million over a risky 7 year deal, thats fine, its your opinion, I will disagree but I wont start name calling unless you are condescending or confrontational in your post.

        • cyclone says:

I won’t say get a life. All I’ll say is that if you think this deal isn’t a steal for the Mets, who have not had a true ace since Dwight Gooden, you have some serious issues. And so what if the guy wants to get paid? Lest we forget, baseball is a business first, and the Mets are not the Minnesota Twins, who constantly cry poverty as they bask in revenue sharing while having the richest owner in sports. Yeah Guerra and Gomez were talented, but far from sure things. Santana is about as close to a sure thing as you can get, at least for the next 4 years. And if we get a few rings during those first few years, you can’t put a price on that.

          Pay the man.

        • Coolpapabell says:

          Nrmax88,
I had a feeling you would still be depressed about this move. $170 is waaay too much for a pitcher, but I don’t think its going to come to that.

Nrmax88, I respect your opinion regarding Gomez, but lets face it, its Johan. Gomez would be a great CF center piece for the future, but his plate discpline did not impress me at all. I think Lastings is a better hitter then Carlos, but time will tell. Of the two OF we lost, I miss Lastings bat most. I sort of feel like having Gomez was more of a luxury.

I hope he does well, so it silences those who say that the deal was so unfair. Yes, Omar got to keep his best prospect, but Gomez isn’t a scrub.

    • UncleMuscles says:

But I’m sure once he signs you’ll be giddy like a little girl

  12. just-mlb says:

this is the best and one and only shot this guy will EVER have at free-agency…if he blows his arm out, he is screwed..there is pressure on BOTH sides to make it happen…the mets should offer a 5 year deal with 2 team options for 150 mil

    25 mil per year average.

or if santana is insistent on making 150, just do the 150 mil for 5 years…so its a 30 mil per year average

contract is insured because it is 5 year deal or less

    done

  13. just-mlb says:

i think what Gomez was slighted on was the fact that the media gives off the impression that the twins got screwed and that he doesnt command the value it takes to get Johan. Ask Gomez and u will think the mets did not get enough back in return

    • a says:

yeah i agree. i may be the resident gomez fangirl but what do you expect him to say? he’s not going to come out and be like “lol i suck, u got pwned minnesota!!!”

  14. s-mets says:

I think Carlos Gomez is going to be an excellent ballplayer. He has all the tools to be a star. He just needs to learn how to hit in the majors, which will come in time. However, to acquire the top pitcher in baseball for basically 4 unprovens,,,sign me up,,,

  15. rockets212 says:

i think people should give props to the metsblog.com for the dedication to put up posts at 1:20 AM, and 6:30 AM posts, great job, i love waking up to read all about the mets without rereading last night posts.

  16. ohboy says:

I think Gomez’s speed and athleticism is going to foster a nice career for him. I like him…I would have liked to see him mature and develop in Queens.

With that being said…if six months ago you told me I could have Johan but I’d have to give up Gomez, I would pack his bags and drive him to Minnesota myself.

  17. metsforever says:

Gomez may turn out to be Hanley Ramirez, or Alex Ochoa. If Hanley, the Mets can fork over the bucks in 6 years. Do you think the Red Sox regret getting Josh Beckett? They would do that again in a heartbeat.

    good luck in Minnesota Carlos.

    Welcome to NY Johan

  18. OPP is Metsmerizing says:

gomez speaking in the 3rd person….funny

  19. CaseStreet says:

I hope he has a better year than Melky, Ellsbury, Crisp, etc. Will he be eligible for Rookie of the Year. If so, I hope he gets it. I agree that Gomez playing in Minn v. NY will be good for him. I’m sure he’s sad and upset about not being with the Mets, that’s all he’s known since he was 16. Hell, Alou was his best man. He’ll be fine and I will cheer for him when he goes back to Shea.

  20. mlbtheshow says:

i disagree with most of you guys when it comes to gomez i think this guy is going to be a star i did from the start. This guy looked real raw to me just as reyes did when he first came up i know reyes hit 307 his first season but it was fallowed by 255 and 273 as you guys know speed does not slump and gomez is faster then reyes. Forget his great speed how bout hes listed at 6-4 when he grows into his body i think hes going to have big time power but dispite how high i am on him would trade him again in a heart beat for santana got to give something to get something Great trade omar now lock him up and hand him a blank check

  21. Broadway Joe says:

wish him the best really liked the kid he has real raw talent for the game
