    WOOOOOOO

    • adropofvenom says:

What about our former prospects? Did they all pass?

      • coke234 says:

I’m pretty sure that none of the prospects are taking physicals. Minnesota just wanted to see their medical records and saw no reason to do physicals.

        • cver says:

Where did you hear that? I thought I heard that they all ARE taking physicals. I could be wrong and if you have any solid info that the prospects have been accepted “as is”, I would appreciate it.

        • rockets212 says:

even when the deal is 100% done i love it how mets fans still worry something going to go wrong, its done we got johan its official, LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • coke234 says:

I’m not completely sure where I read it but even if I am wrong, mlb.com is saying there is a press conference TODAY at 4:30.

        • bigdws29 says:

yesssssss i see it now mets are the world series champs

    • wolfie44 says:

I.m dusting off my crown because it’s great to be KING!!!

      • kbh218 says:

Be careful. I said that last season when they were 7 games up with 17 to go. As a Mets fan you always need to be prepared for the worst.

  2. CaveManJoe says:

All hurdles are cleared! LETS GO METS!! I cannot wait to watch Santana strike out the side against Phillies during the home opener!

    • jas says:

And homer off Hamels in the process.

    • letz_go_mets08 says:

haha……… howard’s going to set the strikeout record thanks to santana, pedro, and perez!

      • kkwik22 says:

What about Maine man? i mean he only had 180…geez this guy is so underrated

        • Meddler says:

Both the youngsters are great, and the best part is they’re so different. The way I see it, Maine has a full season under his belt now, he’ll be a pretty solid rock for the next few seasons at least. With Perez, he can still implode at any time, but when things go right for him he can be almost as good as Santana, its just erratic as to when it happens. If he has a nice season, he could wind up with a Roy Oswalt type payday, and have Santana to thank for it.

Just think of the matchups. Santana vs. Hamels, Pedro vs. Myers, and Ollie vs. Moyer? I’ll take those matchups in any three game set the way these teams are built. And we still have Maine, El Duque, and Santana again for whoever’s up next.

        • wolfie44 says:

Cole Hamels just needs to stay out of the bar fights.

  3. Coolpapabell says:

    Hooooooooooolllllleeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrr!

  4. metsin080910 says:

thank the lord! now what about the 4 prospects when do they take their pysicals?

  5. adropofvenom says:

Did our Prospects pass their physicals? Anybody know?

  6. a says:

    I JUST SQUEALED WITH DELIGHT

  7. MetsFanInVegas says:

When will we know if Gomez/Humber/Guerra/Mulvey passed their physicals?…and when will the Mets put Santana’s name under the 40-man roster?

  8. TugTheMan says:

Okay!!!! Who’s next??? Well, we need something else to talk about.

  9. jlazar2 says:

im crying seriously i just got teary eyed…one of the best sports moments of my life

  10. jstocks5 says:

nice nice.. from wht i hear santana is actually a pretty good hitter.. bat him fourth and delgado 9th… im pumped for opening day.

    • sincekindergarten says:

.258 lifetime, but a small number of ABs to go from. He did have a double and a triple last year, though.

  11. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I wouldnt worry about the prospect’s physicals. No way the Twins try to back out now. They definetly knew about Humbers tommy john and such before the deal. Probably done already but just not announced. Dont fret, we have our boy!

  12. Santana 4 cy young 07 says:

thank god i wa so nervous wen and now i have a new user name lol

  13. royhobbs7 says:

    Hey Matt,

This is the best news that (we) Mets’ fans have received since we acquired Gary Carter.

    LGM (Let’s Go Mets). 13 days to P & C. Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Santana 4 cy young 07 says:

my bad i meant to say i was so nervous went the they gave them the 2 hour extension but not we have a great rotation and lookin foward to a world series

  15. Blue_n_Orange says:

I’m psyched that the Giants are in the super bowl, but I’m a lttle bummed that this deal isn’t getting the media attention it deserves. Well, I guess things will pick up on Monday. All in all it’s a nice problem to have.

  16. MetsFanInVegas says:

On mets.com they need to add Santana across that banner that includes Reyes, Pedro, Wright and Beltran

  17. InsaneMetsFan says:

    Let’s Go Mets!

  18. InsaneMetsFan says:

I guess we didn’t need to trade Reyes.

  19. InsaneMetsFan says:

I guess we didn’t need to trade Jose.

  20. cver says:

When I have the announcemt that all prospects have passed, I will then and only then be totally elated! BUT, the Mets have now medically accepted Santana, which is a HUGE hurdle. Additionally, the Twins have accepted that pending one or more of our prospects not passing their tests, this deal will autiomatically be consumated. The other detail is that I would guess that if one or more of our prospects does not pass his physical that it would just be a matter of us providing the Twins with an EQUIVALENT REPLACEMENT. The key there is that the Twins could not, if for example, replace Gomez with F-Mart, since F-Mart is ranked as our #1 prospect. BUT, some accommodation would probably need to be made. It seems that with all of the press saying that they got fleeced, this might give them a tiny bit of wiggle room to renege, but honestly I think they’ve accepted things as they are at this point and I would doubt that a new GM of a team with a good reputation would try to pull a fast one after the fact. In other words, this is just a hair away from being a done deal. Get those prospects physicals done NOW!

  21. MetsUKfan says:

How about F-Mart on one side of Santana and Reyes on the other in the first photo OP?

Stick it up those so called analysts.

  22. mavicario says:

They should have the press conference during the 4th QTR of the SuperBowl. Have Fox interrupt the game.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Ahh yes, one of the myriad differences between ARod and Johan, Johan has class. As the season unfolds it will be so much fun to discover the many other ways in which Johan outclasses ARod. Their first confrontation is something I’m really looking forward to. Think Johan will dust him?

  23. innaword says:

Awesome! Can we talk what songs Shea will play for him now?

Of course, if he pitches a beauty of a 1-0 game into the 8th and Wagner gives up a 2-run dinger in the 9th, it may be…

    No One To Depend On

“Ain’t got nobody that I can depend on”

  24. InsaneMetsFan says:

    Where are my posts going?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Below the comment form is the following note:

“Comment moderation is enabled. Your comment may take some time to appear.”

Just like Santana becoming a Met, your comments are invevitable, just be patient.

      • pedro4545 says:

Gotta give it a minute sometimes….I think Matt should make another post about this because there have been a lot of double posts in the comments recently..

  25. k-mets says:

There is 4:30 official announcement from the Mets

  26. AidanO says:

where did you hear this from…its not on mets.com

  27. innaword says:

Yes, this news ranks with other major moves.

Let’s hope the results are more like what we got after Pedro, Piazza, Carter and Hernandez….

… rather than Roberto Alomar, Bobby Bo, Mo Vaughn and Mike Hampton!

  28. nymets4557 says:

Does anybody know what channel the press conference will be on?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I don’t have any factual info on this but it would seem the ideal thing for SNY to cover.

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

I would guess it would be safe to say the press conference will be on SNY.

    • MetsFanInVegas says:

Is the “announcement of the deal being complete” a press conference with Santana or just a represenative saying it’s official, Johan is now a member of the New York Mets, thank you

  29. cver says:

    HE’S A MET!!! HE’S A MET!!!! YEAH, I JUST READ IT!!!

    CONGRATULATIONS FRIENDS AND METS!

    LETS GO METS!!!

  30. InsaneMetsFan says:

Now that we have an Ace, Omar can’t lose focus, we need some outfield depth.

    • KingsofQueens says:

haha hell yea! yea it has to be on SNY

    • GravediggerHebner says:

This is certainly not an original idea but I’m a big fan of Kevin Mench as many commenters have suggested recently, provided there’s a realistic way to fit him on the roster.

      • BSMITTYFDNY says:

I have been calling for a Mench signing as well but if you read Matt’s comments he dismisses the idea. Matt says Mets are looking at more of a Kenny Lofton type with speed, and defense. I thought we already had that kind of bench player in Endy Chavez but what do I know? Mench to me has the HR pop we lack off the bench and can play OF and 1B. We need someone to back up Delgado and Mench is the perfect fit in my eyes. I dont care for Lofton.

        • sylvan says:

The #1 difference between Mench and Lofton is that Lofton is good at getting on base, and Mench is bad at it. That’s key. Home run pop comes and goes, but a guy like Lofton can be plugged into a lineup and make things happen at any time.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Sylvan I hear you but IMHO the Mets need a RH hitter (which Lofton is not) who can play OF and 1B (which I don’t think Lofton can do), not a speedy sub which they already have (Chavez).

  31. innaword says:

Hey. The groundhog saw his shadow.

Somebody tell that rodent that spring has already sprung in Metsville!

  32. Gilch says:

how long before i can order my SANTANA jersey

  33. MetsFanInVegas says:

Does anybody collect Mets McFarlane figures? I think they need to come out with a Santana Series 15 variant with him as a Met

  34. Nightlife says:

    Bitchin’.

  35. Gilch says:

humber is a tommy john man lol

  36. MetsFanInVegas says:

On espn.com it says they are having an “afternoon conference call” I don’t think that’s an actual press conference

  37. Santana 4 cy young 07 says:

ed yes it shud i completly forgot was yr i was wen i typed it in i guess my bad im an idiot lol

  38. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

All we need is a nickname for him! or maybe he’ll just go as Johan like Pedro is referred to.

  39. I’m such a happy girl now. I have like tears in my eyes. He’s a Met 4 lyfe!!!

Press conference probably sometime next week, I guess. Seriously if the Giants win the Superbowl, but Johan in the friggin parade. It’s love.

    I can’t wait til SPRING TRAINING :) :)
i think pitchers and catchers report on my birthday

  40. therealsince86 says:

Speaking of who we need for the bench. Amezaga from Florida would be perfect. He has speed and can play every position except catcher and pitcher. He would be a nice replacement for Gotay. It should not take much to get him as he is the 5th highest player on the Marlins at 1.1 million and they just signed Luis Gonzalez.

    • x-nady says:

what do you mean “replacement for gotay”?

      Where did he go

      • therealsince86 says:

He has not gone anywhere but his inability to play anything but 2nd and not even well at that makes him expendable. Anderson and Easley are going anywhere so right now Easley is the back up SS/3B

  41. Nate W. says:

Howie Rose just sang ‘Johan-Johan-Johan’ as the Canadians fans sang Ole-Ole-Ole in the Islanders game.

    :D

  42. Metslife10 says:

I’m so excited!!!!! Now I want to get a season ticket plan or 7 pack. But my family and friends are Yankee fans!! They should have a Shea Stadium singles night lol…..I’ll be the girl with the pink met hat and matching Johan Santana Jersey!!!!!

  43. 7 Train says:

Anyone know if it’s a televised press conference, and if so, where it will be aired?

    • Charlie says:

This can’t be about the trade. No way they would do a press conference on behalf of the teams. The teams do press conferences, not the league, when there are trades.

      • Charlie says:

okay, i have egg on my face. i just went to mlb.com and lo and beyond, the press conference at 4:30pm is to announce the deal.

quite frankly, i’m shocked that the mets would have a press conference the saturday before the super bowl when almost all the new york media are out in phoenix for the big game.

  44. therealsince86 says:

What about some other ideas for how to improve the team now?
It looks as though the roster is currently set but can there be trades/ signings that would improve the team?
    Santana, Pedro, Maine, Perez, Elduque
Wagner, Heilman, Sanchez, Feliciano, Show, Sosa, Wise
Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Beltran, Alou, Delgado, Church, Schneider
    Castro, Easley, Anderson, Endy, Gotay.

I am assuming that Sosa has the long man role. Wise is not a lock as his contract is not so much that we can’t eat it but is there someone to be brought in that would actually challenge him for that spot right now?
What kind of return could you get for Sosa, Gotay, Endy or even Heilman? Could any of them be packaged for a more needed part?
Endy was mentioned earlier in the year in a trade for Marquis. Could you get Marquis and Matt Murton (perfect platoon partner for Church) for maybe Heilman and Endy. Marquis moves into the rotation and either Elduque or Sosa takes Heilman’s spot?
Don’t know if that would help or not? I am just throwing out ideas.

    • x-nady says:

endy and Aaron ain’t going anywhere. Marquis for mota would have been a decent trade

      • therealsince86 says:

I really don’t have that infatuation with Endy. Heilman I would rather keep but I still think we are missing the boat on getting something valuable for him. I am sure that other teams in the league view him as a potential starter and would trade valuable pieces for him. It’s not like he will stay here and be a setup man when he becomes a FA.

        • x-nady says:

but why trade a valuable comodity we know will be effective for something unknown. Sure he most likly will leave via fa, but relievers are a coin flip and omar is stock piling them as of late.

Endy is essential to our team. He cab spell any outfielder and will be playing left field for alou when he inevitably goes down with an injury.

        • therealsince86 says:

I would not say Endy is essential to the team. If you could get Murton for Endy that would be the thing to do. The Cubs were trying to get Marlon Byrd for Murton. Murton would be a nice pickup and would solve the RH hitter problem. Plus don’t forget that if Alou or Beltran goes down Church has played all 3 positions as well.

    • Nate W. says:

I would look for Omar to explore what he could get in trade for Sosa, Wise, Vargas, Gotay, etc. The guys who cant be optioned to AAA but might be beat out for a job by Register, Smith, or Pagan, AH, etc.

They wont bring back much with potential, but the Mets have a bunch of free 40 man roster spots, and will have to fill them. So they might as well find some less guys with options that can fill AAA and maybe be helpful on a short term call up.

when it comes to Vargas and Gotay, I guess getting anything is better than giving them away on a DFA.

      • therealsince86 says:

I am sure Gotay would have some value to a team looking for a backup or even starting 2B. Anyone got any ideas?

        • MudvilleNine says:

No, but I have a question. Most of us who know baseball would like to know where Easley’s going to put the walker when he has to bend down to pick up a groundball at short. I mean, if the ball is hit right at him. He’s proven last year that he has no range to the point where Gotay took over at the position last year before they got Castillo.
          2nd base
          Gotay : 37g – 3 errors – .979 fp
          Easley : 39g – 4 errors – .980 fp
          3rd base
          Gotay : 2g – 0 errors – 1.000 fp
          Easley : 2g – 1 error – .667 fp
          shortstop
          Gotay : 5g – 0 errors – 1.000 fp
          Easley : 0g

          Gotay : 25 years old
          Easley : 38 years old

  45. Santana 4 cy young 08 says:

Ok i fixed my name is that good now

  46. Number41 says:

    sign Lofton yet?

    • therealsince86 says:

We really don’t need Lofton unless we are trading Endy. That’s fine with me though. Endy for Marquis and Move Elduque to the pen. That gives 4/5 pitchers that should approach 200 innings.

      • x-nady says:

I think the mets are done trading. If anything they will sign free agents.

Not sure about who’s out there for of/1b help. But for pitching there is:

Livan, loshe, colon or f. Garcia.

As I have posted before I think a one year deals and a vesting option for a second should be enough for freddy. He is injured and projected to return around june/July. Unless omar is he’ll bent on moving to the bullpen, freddy is the best fit. If El duque & pelfry falter or if there is a devastating injury Garcia would be ready to step in (assuming he is ready by midseason)

        That’s my two cents.

        • therealsince86 says:

Last heard of that loud mouth manager in Chicago said that Garcia would not even pitch this year.

    • I’m not really sure what element Lofton would bring to our backup OF group that would justify signing him. The only thing we’re really lacking is an of bat off the bench that can hit lefties, and Lofton is not the answer for that. At this point in his career, outside of experience and a bit more bat that could be found elsewhere, he doesn’t bring anything to the table that Endy or Pagan can’t . I vote Mench, darnit.

      • Number41 says:

        He’s Julio Franco ‘08

      • therealsince86 says:

I like Mench too but who does he replace on the bench? Gotay I guess. Either way our biggest hole is back up SS and 3B and that is not solved by Gotay or Mench. If we got Mench I would guess that Easley has to be it.

        • Easley would be it, and Marlon Anderson has some IF versatility…or you could carry 11 pitchers, leaving you:

          1) Reyes 2)Castillo 3) Wright 4) Beltran 5) Alou 6) Delgado 7) Church 8)Schneider 9)Endy 10)Gotay/Stache11)Mench 12) M. Anderson 13)Easley 14) Castro 15)Santana 16) Pedro 17) Perez 18) Maine 19) Duque
          20) Wagner 21) Heilman 22)Feliciano 23) Sanchez 24)Schoenweis 25)Wise

This way Pelfrey gets to develop in AAA some more, and you can see what you have with Valentin, Pagan, Smith, Sosa and Lugo down there too.

        • therealsince86 says:

The Mets do not usually go with 11 pitchers nor would they with Pedro and Elduque in the rotation. I would expect Sosa to be in the pen, thus 13 hitters.

        • Nate W. says:

not to mention there is no way the Mets will be able to sneak Sosa to AAA. he would snapped up on waivers quickly.

  47. metsdude13 says:

They’re calling 4:30 a “news conference call” just to announce the trade to the media – not sure if that means Omar/Santana will be on or just a Jay Horowitz or someone like that. Real press conference will probably be next Tues/Wed

  48. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

Don’t know if you guys knew this but apparently Turk Wendell saved the deal. Omar and Green burg got into quite a tussle, Omar got stabbed in the eye with a chopstick, while wrestling with Peter Greenburg about who has better shoes. Turk Wendell came in and did a quadruple back flip while wrestling with a bear. He soon caused an avalanche after his bite to the bears neck made the bear yelp with extreme pain. Turk rescued them with shark tooth and all and carried them (In mid-air might I add) to taco bell. They had the negotiations in the bathroom. I guess Omar won at battlesh*ts and they got him! God Bless You Turk! (BTW I could defiantly J it to this trade I seriously can and will)

    • I really got a major kick out of that. Love the part about Greenberg’s shoes. Sounded like something written by Crispn Glover.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

That’s darn funny, but it’s also somewhat deja vu. I could swear I read it somewhere on Metsblog yesterday, which leads me to the question: Did you “J it” to the trade yet?

I also remember someone writing (Bigchart333?) about videotaping a certain “beej” to celebrate Johan’s acquisiton. Any links to the vid yet?

  49. keystonetom says:

Will fatso Mike cover the presser? He’s probably still saying no way the deal goes down without Reyes.

  50. letsgomets32 says:

    Lets Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
