Buzz: M’s and O’s and Bedard and Jones

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners have sent OF Adam Jones to Baltimore, most likely for a physical in advance of a trade for O’s LHP Erik Bedard.

just so long as bedard is not going to the Phillies or Braves, i’m happy

During the Winter Meetings in December, ESPN.com reported that the Dodgers and O’s had been close to a swap of Bedard for OF Matt Kemp and RHP Jonathan Broxton.

…i don’t think broxton was ever on the table…for any deal…and once the Dodgers committed to not trading kemp, i suspect that deal came to a screeching halt

Opinion: Santana, the Collapse and 2008

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

…i don’t want the Mets, nor their fans, to forget the pain and shock of last season’s ending…i think there is a great lesson to be learned, on all endshowever, we can’t dwell on it either and we all must move forward

that said, the acquisition of Johan Santana does more than just bring the Mets a great pitcher, it changes the topic of conversation among us, the media and the players when spring training begins in a few weeks

sure, the Mets will still get hit with a ton of questions about ‘The Collapse,’ as they should, but this acquisition allows every one involved to then shift the discussion towards a much happier topic, including us…it gives us all an excuse to look forward, not back…

Read: Johan Santana is Kind of a Big Deal

by Chris Mazzone on February 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

In a trio of articles for MLB.com, Marty Noble takes a look at the current state of the Mets, including their projected lineup.

He also discusses the effect Johan Santana will have on the entire team and answers a few mailbag questions revolving around…yep, you guessed it…Santana.

After analyzing the Mets, Noble offers the following as ‘the bottom line’…

“Are the Mets merely improved or vastly improved? Their defense and rotation clearly have been upgraded. The bullpen might be better. And if the other facets of their performance are improved, the offense doesn’t have to be as dominating as it was two years ago.

“The team’s greatest strength, however, appears to be that it has no conspicuous weakness.”

eMailbag: Giants and Jets Fans on MetsBlog

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 11:00 am

…i have been asked to provide the following information countless times during the last few hours…so, here you go…

According to a survey from last November, 49 percent of MetsBlog’s readers are Giants fans while 40 percent are Jets fans.

…i don’t believe this is indicative of the overall fanbases, though it could be…because, like we discussed last week with regards to the Confidence Rating, the people who read this site may or may not directly reflect the actual demographics of the Mets true fanbase…that said, i instinctively associate Jets fans with Mets fans, and Giants fans with Yankees fans, because that is how me and most of my friends and family split up…

…actually, the fact that most of my family and friends are Yankees and Giants fans is exactly why i chose to pull for the Mets and Jets…i’ve always been a contrarian like that, i guess…
