eMailbag: The Mets and Giants Myth
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 4, 2008 9:57 am

Mike B sent in the following…

“Giants win in 1986 and so did the Mets, Giants lost in 2000 to the Ravens, Mets then lose in the WS to the Yanks…the Giants won in 2008.  Are the Mets next?  Is this a sign?  And should I be a fan of the New York Giants if that is the case so that deep down inside it is for the Mets sake?”

…for what it’s worth, the Mets won their first World Series in 1969, the same year the Jets won their only Super Bowl

…nevertheless, mike, i keep hearing this Mets-Giants bit too…

…the thing is, the Giants won the Super Bowl in the 1986 season, and they just won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season…not 2008’s…so, by this logic, the Mets should have won last season…not next season…and lord knows they did notnot to mention 1990…oh, brother

…so, in other words, like me, keep punishing yourself…go Jets…since the Giants have nothing to do with the Mets success

By the way, for more on the Giants win in yesterday’s Super Bowl, check out GiantsFootballBlog.com by Anthony De Rosa.

    Matt,
Stop punishing yourself as Jets fan…Most Giant fans ,including myself, have no ill feelings towards the Jets….this is no where near Yanks Mets rivalry…

As I said last week…Mets sign Santana, Giants Shock The World, Pettitte rolls on Clemens…

    • Cerrone says:

The comment about punishing myself has ZERO to do with the Giants.

It has EVERYTHING to do with the Jets, nothing more and nothing less.

I assume most Jets fans know what I mean.

      Knicks fire Isiah, trifecta!

“by this logic, the Mets should have won last season…”

by a lot of logics the Mets should have won last season…

  2. rustysribs says:

Of course 1991 kind of throws a monkey wrench into that theory.

  3. mbeli says:

I agree there is no rivalry between Jets and Giants. As a huge Giants fan I’ll go to Jets game and root for the Jets, especially against the Brady Bunch. Anyways this past week has been the greatest sports week ever for me. We got Johan and then we pull off the upset!! Go Giants and spring training is almost here!!

    Matt,

Since this is a slow period for Baseball, you should conduct a poll asking whether people are:

    Giants Fans
    Jets Fans
    Fans of another team.

Assuming everyone that responds is a Mets fan, it would give us some idea of the breakdown out there. As a Giants fan, I hate being grouped in the Yankees/Giants group, it would be nice to have some evidence to show that I am not unusual in not being a Jets fan.

  5. kbusch22 says:

I too am a Giants fan…this is probably gonna go down as the single best sports week ever for any Giants AND Mets fan.

The Giants win the Super Bowl…and the Johan Santana press conference is Wednesday…WOW.

    • devildogjack says:

Amen Brothers!! I hate the assumption that Skankees and Giants go together as the Jets/Mets do. I am a proud Giant fan today, and a very excited Mets fan as well. What a fantastic weekend.
I’m in NC, wishing I could get up there for the parade tomorrow.

        WHAT A WEEK!!!!!…..JOHAN AND A CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

Just amazing that 6 weeks ago the Giants sucked and I was still in mourning over the Mets collapse…..

Now, I have the best pitcher in baseball, and an upset in the Super Bowl against an undefeated New England team….

Just goes to show you….never get too high, never get too low….life is an incredible thing sometimes, isnt it?

As a Redskins fan (in addition to being a Mets fan), I’m glad to see the Giants win. Everyone trumpets the AFC as being better than the NFC, but I think it’s safe to say the NFC East was the best division in the NFL last year. And, if what was posted holds true, in addition to this one…every year the Giants have won the SB, the Redskins have won it the following year, then I’ll obviously be a pretty happy guy.

  7. davenappy says:

Do the Giants have anything to do with the Mets chances of winning the World Series? Well….probably not, but Johan Santana certainly does. For those of us (like me) who are Giants/Mets fans, this week is absolutely great, and is a great way to start a year of rooting for these teams.

What better reason is there to postpone the Mets introduction of Johan Santana than to postpone it for the GIANTS VICTORY PARADE!!!!!!

  8. SheaVendor says:

    I am a Mets/Jets/Rangers fan…A lifetime of misery…HOWEVER…
I have never rooted against the Giants (except when playing the Jets). Plus this weekend was capped off because I hit for $850 in my SB Pool (Pats 7 – Giants 3..I hit for halftime and 3rd quarter). GREAT WEEKEND!!!

  9. ghobot says:

come on matt, this isnt about jet fans. dont fell bad because this is a ny metro area win. giant fans and jet fans have always been nice to each other. we share a home! i would be so happy for the jets and the jets fans to experience this joy!

this is my first adult championship. understanding the gravity and immensity of sports and understanding the game. it sunk in this morning and i actually weeped.

  10. wiseman says:

    go giants and mets!

  11. MetLifer says:

    AWESOME week!!!!

    Mets/Giants fan!

    Mets sign Johan.
I win the office pool. 1st quarter and final score.
I win the Giants with 12 point spread.

    WIN WIN WIN!!!!

  12. bobbyv says:

To me; the connection between Giants and Mets is pitching and defense (pitching nonwithstanding). Both teams have historically been about keeping the other team on the board; and offensively have always gone for the more steady — rather than flashy players.

  13. GregB says:

It’s doesn’t matter if it’s Jets or Giants or which season it was…it’s the same city/different sports winning consecutively…so Mets winning after the Giants would qualify.

    it’s happened quite a few times…here are a few:

    2004: Patriots – Red Sox
2003: Buccaneers – Marlins (same state) – wrap around to Lightning (ok, a stretch)
    2002: Angels – Lakers
    2000: Yankees – Devils
    1986: Mets – Giants
    1981: Dodgers – Lakers
    1979: Steelers – Pirates
    1970: Orioles – Colts
    1969: Jets – Mets – Knicks
