eMailbag: The Mets and Giants Myth

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 9:57 am

Mike B sent in the following…

“Giants win in 1986 and so did the Mets, Giants lost in 2000 to the Ravens, Mets then lose in the WS to the Yanks…the Giants won in 2008.  Are the Mets next?  Is this a sign?  And should I be a fan of the New York Giants if that is the case so that deep down inside it is for the Mets sake?”

…for what it’s worth, the Mets won their first World Series in 1969, the same year the Jets won their only Super Bowl

…nevertheless, mike, i keep hearing this Mets-Giants bit too…

…the thing is, the Giants won the Super Bowl in the 1986 season, and they just won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season…not 2008’s…so, by this logic, the Mets should have won last season…not next season…and lord knows they did notnot to mention 1990…oh, brother

…so, in other words, like me, keep punishing yourself…go Jets…since the Giants have nothing to do with the Mets success

By the way, for more on the Giants win in yesterday’s Super Bowl, check out GiantsFootballBlog.com by Anthony De Rosa.

Minors: New Baseball America’s Top 10

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 8:16 am

In a chat at Baseball America, Jim Callis re-ranked the Mets Top 10 Prospects List to look as follows: (1) OF Fernando Martinez, (2) RHP Eddie Kunz, (3) RHP Brant Rustich, (4) LHP Jon Neise, (5) LHP Nathan Vineyard, (6) RHP Robert Parnell, (7) RHP Joe Smith, (8) RHP Scott Moviel, (9) 3B Danny Murphy, (10) SS Wilmer Flores.

first off, i like that the Top 10 contains seven pitchers, one of which is not pelfrey, who is still a prospect in my mind

…if you recall, last week, i wrote of some new rhetoric coming from the Mets, specifically from the minor-league coaches down in St. Lucie, which went as follows

…for the first time in a long while, the Mets are working hard to draft and sign as many young pitchers as they can…they feel they have acquired some of the best young pitching through the draft over the last year or two…so, even if the Mets trade a few minor-league pitchers, they still have a good number of young arms to fill in with over the next few years

Meanwhile, Deolis Guerra and Carlos Gomez now sit as the top two prospects in the Twins organization, according to Callis.

now, that’s what i like to hear…of course, this will not stop the Twins from getting slammed in reports about how they goofed up by getting so little in return for santana - as if they had a choice…

…people like to break these deals down, in the now, and try to determine a winner and a loser…but, why…i mean, the Mets needed an ace, and they got one…the Twins needed to move santana, and they did, and they got four prospects in the process…when i hear  people make the winner-loser comment, it suggests that one side must fail, while the other must succeed…why can’t both teams do well…

…if gomez makes an all-star team in a few years, and mulvey, guerra and humber contend for cy-young awards, does that alter how badly the Mets needed an ace today…no, it doesn’t…the Mets had to make this trade, and they were not going to acquire santana for free…if i had a crystal ball, and knew that gomez will be an All-Star, and the Twins had to have him, i’d still trade him to get santana because the Mets need an ace now…end of story…

Buzz: Interest in Lohse and Livan

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 7:55 am

During a conference call to announce the acquisition of Johan Santana, which you can read more about by clicking here, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that this is the team he will go to spring training with.

However, in the Chicago Tribune, Phil Rogers writes that the Phillies and Mets could wind up in a bidding war for Kyle Lohse.

Last Friday, in a report for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the Mets continue to express interest in Lohse, even with Santana in their sights.

…this is interesting…first, i have no interest in seeing lohse signed to a long-term deal…however, he once told reporters that he had three teams interested in him, while seeking at least a three-year deal…that market has to be shrinking…and so, if the Mets can acquire lohse on a short-term deal, (1) it means Mike Pelfrey will most likely get an entire season at Triple-A, which he needs, and (2) Orlando Hernandez can shift to the bullpen, which means (a) a deeper bullpen, (b) the Mets can throttle el duque back and forth based on his health, and (c) when he takes his standard mid-summer vacation, it will be easier to absorb…

For what it’s worth, according to ESPN Deportes, the Astros will have two scouts watching Bartolo Colon pitch Wednesday in the Dominican Republic.

Read: Santana’s Deal, Impact on League

by Matthew Cerrone on February 4th, 2008 at 7:36 am

According to multiple reports, John Santana will earn a total of $19 million next season, $20 million in 2009, $21 million in 2010, $22.5 million in 2011, $24 million in 2012, and $25.5 million in 2013.

The Mets hold a team option worth $25 million for 2014, or can buy out the contract in exchange for $5.5 million.

Santana also has a full no-trade clause.

…based on history, i’m fairly certain that the day will come when Mets fans believe this contract is a problem, but, fact is, it had to happen…and there was no getting around it…and i’m happy with the way it all turned out

In a post to his blog for ESPN, Peter Gammons wrote…

“In the National League East, where the Phillies and Braves are very good and very aggressive, the Mets now have what no one else has: the best pitcher on the planet.”

the Mets will hit opening day with both santana and Pedro Martinez, coupled with the 15–win duo of John Maine and Oliver Perez…last season, santana was on the Twins, and martinez was on the disabled list through five months…this coming year, both are in Queens and both will be healthy…that’s a huge, huge upgrade, which, oddly enough, i actually feel is being understated by most people

To learn more about Santana the person, less the pitcher, check out two outstanding, the first by Jack Curry in the New York Times, and the second by Christian Red in the Daily News.

To hear how Santana could effect the rest of baseball, such as the Yankees and the NL East, watch ESPN.com’s Buster Olney by clicking the play button below…
