I was impressed as to how well he spoke English. Very articulate and no heavy accent.

WOW! I cant believe my eyes. Seeing all the Giants fans at the parade this week made me so excited for the Mets. I cant wait to go to my first Ticker Tape Parade. Lets Go Mets: 08′ Champs!!

  2. nevets72 says:

I love how many times he talked about winning in 20081

  3. seanrooney3 says:

agreeing with what dj short said before, i couldn’t believe this was real until i saw him talking in a mets uniform

  4. wallybackman says:

Anyone else notice that about 1:30 into the video, SNY put up 325 Ks instead of 235 Ks… 235 is impressive, but 325K in 219 IP would be awesome

  5. pezao says:

    How many days until P&C?!?

  6. johan santana is my son says:

cant wait to go to spring training and i cant wait for the season to start

    What a wonderful event, today…
Class all the way, real class.
    I feel proud again.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I agree. If I were to be a complete negative nelly nitpicker I would say the only aspect of the press event that lacked class was the moment immediately after Johan’s opening remarks.

The gentleman in charge of the event then stated that they were “opening the floor to questions” and a spanish speaking reporter began asking Johan a question, only to have that gentleman interrupt him stating that the first question belonged to Kevin Burkhardt of SNY. Luckily Johan handled it with class: He looked at the spanish speaking reporter and said “I’m sorry” while Burkhardt began his question.

  8. Joe Bacci says:

I have a feeling Johan is going to thrive in NY. In addition to his tremendous talent, he seems to be very articulate, poised, and personable not to mention the fact that he is also a handsome dude.

His demeanor is consistent with what i perceive to be the image the Wilpons are trying to portray; its almost as if he’s cut from the same baseball mold as DWright. This may be a lot to try to take away from the first press conference but i think his interview on the fan was very telling as well.

Wright. Reyes. Beltran. Santana. Maine. Ollie. All for years to come.

New York is indeed a National League town once again.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

When you say “the image the Wilpons are trying to portray” I think you’ve hit on the modus operandi of this offseason.

Who’s gone? The malcontents and the misbehavers.

      Who’s coming aboard? Solid citizens.

    • icedrake523 says:

He does present himself much like David Wright. He’s very polite, articulate, and soft spoken. Always smiling, too.

  9. JRWilliams79 says:

I can’t wait to watch the Cy Young race between Pedro and Johan…there is going to be absolutely no pressure on Maine and Perez this season.

  10. BBmetsfreak36 says:

spring training is close and their are some good free agents out there it might be a good idea to catch them out of desperation of a team to sign cheap ::cough cough::(clears throat) livan/lohse + mench possibly. but come on guys we got what we need.

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Grab Livan if we can. These players have to be antsy at this point with spring traing coming fast and no contract. We may get Livan, F. Garcia, or Lohse ( I hope not him but the other two instead) on the cheap right now. Mench as the right handed OF/1B bat as well. Or, dont kill me for this one ,but what about Sammy “Omar’s man” Sosa for the power righty bat we need? Could be great fit to platoon with Church if necessary or play LF when Alou goes on DL. Does he play any 1B? Remember Sosa had over 90 RBI’s last season. He still has some game left in him. Always liked him. He plays very hard and is passionate about the game. You can definetly argue against it though.

  11. eaeden says:

“As for Santana, with whom he’s quite familiar from his American League years, Hudson said, ‘He’s pretty good, but he’s not unbeatable. He got hit around a little bit last year.’”

Good luck with that, Hotlanta (Hudson might note that Chipper, Tex, and McCann do the bulk of their hitting vs RHP). At least we know that Glavine won’t be devastated, just disappointed, when the Mets torch him. 1995 was sweet and all, but the 2008 Braves might have more luck comparing their team to the Nats or the Marlins.

    • mets484 says:

hahaha that was funny… “At least we know that Glavine won’t be devastated, just disappointed, when the Mets torch him.”

  12. Volume11 says:

Johan is just what this team needs. He adds an air of authenticity, respect and leadership that the team sorely needs…I was elated during his press conference. He spoke well, answered the questions politely, and looked truly happy to put on the pinstripes…if his personality can bleed over to the team when they hit a slump we wont be collapsing anytime soon…I cannot wait a single effin’ moment longer for the season to start. Think of all goodness we get treated to you this year. Johan as a Met, the return of an injury free Pedro (his injuries had been nagging him for years) and we get to see Glavine pitch against us…and get reminded of why he should stayed in NY for one more season.

  13. He is a beautiful man.

  14. metsftw says:

got a nice shiver down my spine when i saw him in a mets jersey. have to keep pinching myself to make sure i’m not dreaming.

  15. pedro4545 says:

I knew he was a great pitcher but after watchign this he seems like a great guy also. He should fit right in with the group of guys we have here now. I believe in 08.

  16. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

A video of New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal at a cockfight was posted this week on YouTube.

    Pedro Martinez

    Martinez

Martinez and Marichal laugh before releasing the roosters. The two took part as honorary “soltadores,” the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight.

The animal released by Martinez appears to be killed on the video, which was posted Tuesday. The fight takes place in the Coliseo de Gallos (Rooster Coliseum) in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s biggest cockfighting venue. Cockfighting is legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.

By early Thursday, the video was removed “due to terms of use violation.”

  17. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

STOP THE HATE YES WILLIE IS THE ONLY BAD APPLE ON THIS TEAM NOW BUT PLZ LEAVE THE METS ALONE!!!!! ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS WIN WIN WIN WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!1 THEY ARE SUPERSTARRS! WITH BIG CONTRACTS! PLZ LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!! THEY ARE FOCUSIONG ON PLAYING GOLF AND MACKIN HOT LADIES LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU WANT TO DISS THEM YOU HAVE TO COME THRU ME FIRST! I MEAN IT!

  18. BlueTrane says:

    Is this FireMetsManagement in disguise?

  19. BlueTrane says:

Im also guessing that MrMet missed the 01 season…who was the coach of that team?

  20. Gary Coleman Is My Father says:

to be fair. the 01 team nearly came back and hada great run in september also, barley anything was done that offseason, the 2000 mets werent that good and it was a special year

  21. FBones24 says:

you mean timo perez, jay payton and benny agbayani weren’t good? What about Rick Reed and Bobby Jones? Bobby Valentine is a god among men….that’s all I have to say about him.

  22. NHL says:

Amen. So much flak Bobby V. got for his, err, eccentricities, but fact is that the guy knew his damn stuff. He was an excellent manager…especially considering the flaws his teams had at times. I’ll always miss him. He’s doing great in Japan btw.

  23. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Ahhhh…….Rick Reed. Nice to hear his name again. He was one of my favorite Met pitchers of all time. I loved his style of pitching. He would leave it all out on the mound. He was a typical blue collar pitcher who used everything he had and so much effort to make up for what he lacked in natural talent. Bobby Jones’ game in the playoffs that year was amazing as well. Remember that playoff game to get in the playoffs the Mets had where Lieter pitched ausome and Alfonzo had a great game at the plate? A great team to root for. I miss Bobby V but he wasnt good working with highly talented elite athletes. He is good for getting everything out of lesser talented players such as Benny Agbayani.

  24. BSMITTYFDNY says:

We need to give Willie this year to prove himself. Leave him alone for one more year as he is still a young, new manager. If he fails to lead this highly talented team again or fails to set established roles for our bullpen arms then we should move on. But for now I say give him the benefit of the doubt. If he fails then yes I would be interested in bringing back Bobby V although I dont think the Mets would ever even consider it. I would have liked Joe Girardi but actually I am over former Yankees. If Willie is ever let go we need a former Met player with some experience managing. Backman? (Wright loves him right or is it HoJo?) HoJo? Gary Carter? Dykstra? Keith Hernandez? (although he has never managed he sure knows this team from calling every game), Mookie? For now we give Willie a little rope but if he doesnt work out we should definetly go with an ex Met player to manage.

  25. m00kie says:

no, this is the original firemetsmanagement, our old favorite, Mr Met!!

that said, if this team does not make the playoffs, and this comes from an ardent willie supporter, Willie’s job is definitely in question .. we’ve got the tools, we’ve got the talent, now let’s kick some butt ;)

The vibe I’m getting from these guys is that they’re ready and this year they want to steamroll their way to 103 wins..
