I hope this is the situation because you'd otherwise end up with too many retired numbers like NYY. With respect to Piazza, he didn't have whatever those two guys had that enabled them to be the leaders that they were. Plus, Piazza didn't win anything here. We don't want to become like the Yankees, who retire numbers at the whim of their ownership. To have your Mets number retired should mean something.
