News: Perez not yet Open to Long-Term Deal
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 7, 2008 7:52 am

The Mets have not yet to come to terms with Oliver Perez and Ryan Church.

Perez is eligible to be a free agent after this season.

According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Mets GM Omar Minaya said yesterday that Perez’s agent, Scott Boras, is not interested in negotiating a contract that covers beyond the 2008 season.

…well, at this point, perez’s first mistake may be hitching his wagon to boras, who is not doing his best work of late

…as i have said before, if perez puts up another 15–win season, like he did last year, there is absolutely no reason why he will sign with a team for a penny less than what was given to Gil Meche last year, i.e., a three– or four-year deal worth at least $10 million per season…which, to me, seems like an awful lot for perez…then again, it is an awful lot for meche, Ted Lilly, etc…the thing is, next off-season, perez will be a 28–year-old lefty with a career ERA around 4.00 and roughly 60 wins under his belt…so, the guy will get paid…no doubt about it…

…i believe the Mets have interest in retaining perez…other teams will have interest in him as well…so, i can understand why boras would prefer to see his client on the open market…of course, how will that move look if perez hurts himself or implodes…

Perez has asked for $6.5 million in 2008, while the club is offering $4.725 million.

Rubin also gives an update on Billy Joel at Shea; newly acquired Nelson Figueroa; Johan Santana bobble-head night; and Ben Johnson, who, according to Willie Randolph, has been re-signed.

Johnson adds a little more depth in the outfield, even if it isn’t much. Figueroa is just another body to fill up the minors.

I would like to see the Mets extend Perez, but it really isn’t in their best interest to do it until they see if he repeats. In theory they would have to pay a lot more then, but since Boras doesn’t want to re-up now anyway, they really don’t have much choice but to wait. And waiting would be a win-win proposition for the Mets. If he continues to break out in ‘08, they have the inside track to sign him (albeit probably for $12 to $13 million a year). If he busts, they didn’t spend $40 million up front, and can go after a different mid rotation starter.

I’m very happy we kept Johnson for depth purposes….it gives us a Righty Bat in the Outfield who probably can hit lefties well enough if given the chance.

You really think that “Figueroa is just another body to fill up the minors.” ? Do you have any idea what he’s done lately? These are just the highlights, chronologically, since August 2007:

(1)Triple A Mexican League, 2007: 19 starts, 10 complete games, 3.87 ERA, 8-6 for a team that finished 20 games under .500. Averaged 8+ innings pitched per game.

(2) Uni President Lions in the China Baseball League on Taiwan. Joined team at end of the season, went 4-0, leading them into the China World Series. Won games 1, 4, and 7 (October). WS MVP. In the Konami Cup Asia Series (November), won the only game Taiwan won. Taiwan, Communist China, Korea, Japan played a weekend series in ther Tokyo Dome.

(3) In the Dominican Winter League, pitched Aguilas to the championship; went 4-0 in the playoffs and championship series. Because he pitched the regular season in Mexico, he had to pitch for Mexico in the Caribe World Series, not for Aguilas.

(4) Caribe World Series stats: On Sunday, Feb. 3rd: pitched 9-1/3 innings, allowed 1 run (HR) on 7 hits. Mexico lost in the 11th 2-1. Yesterday, Feb. 6th, came into the game in the bottom of the 9th in a 4-4 game, one out, runners on 1st and winning run on 3rd. Pop up to short center, ground out (2 outs on 3 pitches). Top of 10th, Mexico scores 3 runs; 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth, Mexico wins its only game in the Caribe Series. Nelson’s Caribe World Series stats: 1-0, 11 innings, 1 run, 7 hits, 0.82 ERA.

And you think that “Figueroa is just another body to fill up the minors.” ? Maybe he would have been based on his DBacks-Phillies-Brewers-Pirates ML record, but not anymore. Watch him make the Mets in Spring Training…maybe even as the 5th starter. Not bad for the Brooklyn-born 33-year-old righthander drafted by the Mets out of Brandeis U. in 1995.

nice info, I liked the fact that he has done well in US AAA over the last number of years and has pitched for New Orleans before.

He most certainly is here to be part of the AAA rotation, but at least he shows a bit more promise of being able to fill in at the big league level and be more useful than Chan Ho Lima…

Although the fact that he has been a starting pitcher in the Dominican WL worries me about his ability to start all year stateside. Thats a lot of work with no breaks.

Pelfrey, Bostick, Figueroa, Jose Santiago, and Vargas?
I feel for the Zephers fans, its not gonna be a pretty year…

I’d be open to giving him a 4/$45 right now. Of course it’s not my money.

and, of course, it only matters what Boras is open to.

I like Perez a lot and think the Mets should be open to signing him long term, but with Boras in the mix negotiations can always get ugly. With the erratic way that Perez pitches it would be in his best interest to try and bang out a long term extension right now. Everyone calls out Tom Glavine for his horrible last start against the Marlins, but don’t forget Perez stunk it up in his last start too, when we needed him the most. That’s the most frustrating thing about Ollie P, in one start he could look so dominant and in another he’s walking the ballpark and can’t throw a strike. If I’m Boras I try and lock him up now, especially after a 15 win season with an ERA in the 3’s.

Do people read? It says that Perez/Boras are NOT open to talking about an extension now….probably because they believe that Perez is going to put up another similar year and then be able to ask for more money.

Question. If the Mets lose Perez to free agency, how many draft picks would they get? Would he be consideration A type free agent?

Comment by Mister Koo

I think that depends on how his 2008 season goes.

The Elias Rankings (What Free Agent Compensation is determined by) is based on the last two seasons of work, so right now Perez ranks pretty badly in it because of his 2006 season, but that number will go off the books by the time he hits Free Agency so his status should improve alot when next years version comes out.

If they rank among the Top 20% of Players during that span they get Type A status (Supposed to be a First Round Pick and a Sandwich Pick, however if a team picks in the Top Half of Round 1, their 1st Rounder is protected and we’d only get a Second Rounder, also if a team signs a FA higher rated then Perez too we could get bumped down another round). The next 20% of Players during that span get Type B Status (Just a Sandwich Pick). Being that Perez has a 15-10, 3.56 ERA, 174 K season under his belt for it already, I would assume as long as he’s slightly above league average he should get Type A status next year, but you never know.

If Perez is drinking the Boras kool-aid, then he knows he needs a 15 win season under 4.00 era to get the coveted $10mil+/4yr deal. That is good news for Mets fans for this year because he will be motivated to play to those numbers or better.

And, if he plays to those numbers (he would be in the top 30 percent of starting pitchers) and we lose him to free agency, then he would be a Type A free agent.

(Type A players, ranked in the top 30 percent of players at their positions. A team that signs a Type A player gives its top draft pick to the club that the player is leaving. The “losing” club also receives a supplemental pick in the “sandwich” round between the first and second rounds.)

A) If Perez was a Free Agent right now, he’d get 10 mill+/4 yr. Easily. His numbers are as good as Ted Lilly or Gil Meche’s were when they cashed in and his stuff is way better.

B) They tightended up the Compensation Guidelines 2 years ago. Only Top 20% is a Type A now, 21-40% is Type B, and there is no more Type C.

They need to somehow keep OP. If he goes, that is a tough spot to fill. Also with El Duque on his way out and Pedro probably not far behind, that raises some concerns. We have to hope Pelfrey, et al can step up. But that lefty arm is not something I want to see go.

And I hate Scott Boras.

You guys are kidding urselves.

Oliver’s floor is 10 mil per. Even if he goes 190 IP, 175 Ks, 4.25 ERA, he will get 10+ per year simply for that, his age and upside which doesnt necessarily fizzle out if he isnt johan santana-esque this year.

Lefties take longer to develop, especially power lefties. I guarantee there are at least 5 pitching coaches out there that think they hold the key to turning Perez into an ace caliber pitcher.

If all we offer is 10 per, Perez is gone, and rightfully so. The only benefit to accepting that now would be if he was scared of injury, which I doubt he is.

He’s gona look to break the bank this year and just might do it. It will take at LEAST 13 per over 5 years to get him to consider passing up on FA.

How nice would it be to enter Citi field with a YOUNG rotation of Santana, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, X?

hopefully OP puts up good numbers (he is definintely one of my fav pitchers) this year and resigns with us.

Oliver Perez was my favorite pitcher BEFORE Omar acquired him. Nobody here would be sadder than me to see him go. I just don’t see it happening.

Omar doesn’t commit big money (10+ per, 5 years) unless a pitcher is very special. If Oliver comes out looking like 2004 Perez, we have a shot. Otherwise, Boras and his army will create a presentation proving he deserves at least 5 years at 65 mil and Omar will balk at that.

Our only shot is Oliver goes berzerk or he really likes playing with the Mets.

If I had to bet tho, I’d say Ollie is gone.

I like Perez alot. I’d want him as a piece of the future rotation. But i don’t see an ace or even a number 2 guy. It is not the stuff. Its the lack of consistency so far in his career.

If Perez puts together another season about as good as last year…he will be worth $12 - $14M to us for 4yrs

If he can do better out there….we should let the market grab him and we can take the 2 picks to further restock the system.

I think next year the payroll climbs again. I think we resign Pedro during this season at some point to a 2 year extension worth a total of $30 - 35M.

I think Delgado walks regardless of his performance this year. I think the METS want to get younger there.

I agree on Delgado.

I predict Casey Kotchman, Kendry Morales, Nick Johnson or Paul Konerko is playing 1B for us in 09.

MAYBE Rickie Sexson if he bounces back, which is a possibility.

2008-02-07 10:15:12

possibly Johnson–I don’t know his contract status, but he should be around FA time–but why would the dodgers give those guys up? For whom?

No thanks to sexson, and I thought Konerko was locked up…and if not, won’t he be Delgado part deux?

I think u meant the angels…..

The angels might deal one cuz its a waste to keep 2 good young bats like that on the bench.

Yes, Konerko would be Delgado 2, which is all we need there really.

NIck Johnson is locked up a few more years, but he’s cheap for us, while being one of the highest paid Nats. They have Dmitri Young and they have to find at bats for Dukes, Milledge, Kearns and Pena.

2008-02-07 10:43:16

oops, angels…one of those LA teams with prospects…but again, who do they get from us? don’t see what we’d have to offer them, really.

If konerko is any kind of expensive, I’d pass on him too.

He’s worth 4 years 42 mil. He’s still a solid 1B option jus for his power.

Unfortunately, it may take more than that.

Comment by jamie
2008-02-07 11:42:56

that’s what I mean by ‘expensive’ (’it might take more than that’)

And I think 4 years would be too much. power guys fall off a cliff when they decline and we’d (theoretically) have him from age…33-on.

If we could somehow get Johnson, that’s the most interesting/plausible.

don’t count out the Yankees driving up the price for Perez, either…the fact that he is young and lefthanded work in his favor and I am sure they would love to stick it to us by taking away one of our young guns…

I tend to agree they will be involved if for no other reason than my expectation on their season is they will not have the homerun success they are expecting out of at least 2 of the 3 young guys they have pegged for the rotation.

I see Joba going back to the pen as the 8th inning guy

I see Hughes being pretty good but not much better than 14 - 12 or so.

I see Kennedy washing out completely.

Then Petites deal is done next year and they will need at least 2 more starters. Sabathia could be one. OP could be the other

Comment by Nate W.
2008-02-07 10:06:45

yea they have Pettitte and Mussina (and Pavano) coming off the books so they will have money to spend and holes to fill even if their kids do well. Hopefully they target Sabathia and it takes forever to get a deal worked out.

Does anyone know if the ‘house that steroid built’ will have the same preference for lefty starters that the one that Ruth built has had? With the current stadium I could see them doing whatever it takes to get both CC and Ollie…

Oliver is one of our favorites too.

As a fantasy baseball advocate, I’ve followed his funk since his days in SD. Pitt screwed him up, but the Mets have him on the path to be a big contributor for many years.

I’d like to see him right behind Johan for the next 5 yrs.

BTW, check out Perez next time you see the Mets in person. On days he doesn’t pitch he’s usually on the top step of the dugout. Not supporting the action, but checking out the ladies in
