Wow! I wonder when the Sox found out about it…we may have gotten Johan just in time.

    • mikey_FF says:

      Timing is everything!

    • ExileInLA says:

Did anyone read the Boston Herald article? Notice that when the Sox & Schilling had to agree on the “3rd opinion”, they agreed on Dr. Altchek – the Mets’ doctor.

It’s a good sign that the Mets’ doc is so highly regarded. But I’ve gotta wonder, how long til the conspiracy theorists start with “He tipped off the Mets, so they upped their offer”, which is horribly insulting to the man professionally.

In that case, Where is the best place to get a good look at the parade in october based on what anyone saw tuesday.

    • Xavier22 says:

Dude – I remember hearing that kind of talk in February 2002 (when I think the Mets slogan was “Save Room in October”) and look what happened then.

Or more recently, recall the folly of a certain New England-based team that went undefeated all season, only to be brought down by a bunch of “average joes” when it really mattered.

Let them play the games first.

      • gem779 says:

        seriously, i hate overconfidence

        • Saltzy23 says:

Oh please….whats the WORST that could happen to a team with overconfidence?….Its not like they could ever think they are so good they would get bored, or think losing the season in game 162 wasnt the end of the world or anything crazy like that. This team has been nothing but rock solid when dealing with expectations over the last few years….get a grip…

        • gipper913 says:

All I know is, whenever the Mets get back to the promised land…we ought to have a REAL tickertape parade. I remember tickertapes in New York that had so much paper, it was blinding. That Giants parade was L-A-M-E. There were like a few dozen pieces of paper.

On of the iconic NY events is the true tickertape parade.

  3. Xavier22 says:

Somewhere in Minneapolis, Bill Smith has his head on his desk and is sobbing quietly.

  4. Wow, so it is true.

Yeah, if was reported earlier in the off-season the Red Sox would’ve made a big push to get Johan.

  5. shea_guevara says:

I don’t know why they didn’t make a push for him anyway. The Sox had a great staff last year, but two fifths of it (Schilling and Wakefield) are old and missed significant time. And the young guys like Lester and Bucholz could be great, but you have no idea what they might give you over a full season.

Oh well. Their oversight is our gain, I guess.

    • Kalihan42 says:

I think its a money issue. They just signed an expensive starter last off season. beckett’s next contract willl likely surpass Santanas. And the Sox already have the 2nd most expensive team in baseball. They had to show a little restraint in giving both prospects and money…

Now Blanton might be someone they are willing to push for a little now though….it might be interesting to see…..or did he make it some place already. I know there was talk of the reds?

  6. Bluth Banana says:

He was probably just washing his truck.

  7. Tapeball45 says:

    It’s ok..

    Maybe Tom Brady can pitch.

I heard he just became available.

  8. stickguy says:

I doubt they were counting on him for much, and it really doesn’t seem likely that they would have gone harder after Johan anyway.

They already have Beckett and Dice K to be their equivalent of Santana and Pedro, then the young guys after that (Maine/Perez?), with Wakefield and Shilling rounding out the rotation as the grizzled vets (Duque).

So yeah, Johan would be a nice addition, but they probably can do just fine without him, and still don’t need the salary.

Now, if Beckett had gone down…

Besides, the Yanks are the team that is going to have huge rotation problems this year. Could be a disaster by July.

OK, that might just be wishful thinking that Joba gets hurt again, Kennedy pitches like Pelfrey last April, Hughes has some rookie bumps, Mussina continues to be washed up, Petite blows up, and we saw the real Wang in the playoffs!

    • Kalihan42 says:

Agreed. Do you think they might test the waters on Blanton now? He is a less expensive fit that could still round out that nasty rotation well.

      • stickguy says:

He could be a nice fit For the Yanks or Sox now.

He would still fit nicely at the back of the Mets rotation, but El Duque is muddying the waters, since until someone gets hurt, there really isn’t a spot available.

Plus, Beane probably still has him overpriced.

Omar really needs to find a young guy/reclaimation project that can start in AAA, but has the potential to finally get it together and hold down a rotation spot for a few years. 2008 they likely need some reinforcements (7th/8th starters behind Pelfrey), but it would be great if soemone out of that pool could get a regular gig next year.

I expect Pelfrey to finally become a regular by the end of this year, and certianly starting 2009, but that still leaves 2 rotation spots potentially up for grabs.

I would love to see Perez and Pedro back and dealing, but you have to be prepared for losing them. And after this year, who wants to go into next off season needing 2 SPs just to complete the rotation?

        • Kalihan42 says:

Good points. I think recaimation projects is the way to go now bcause they will accept minor league deals and we can send them up and down as Pedro and El Duque get hurt.

  9. MealTicket says:

Rumor is he was flagellating himself with grief after Mitt Romney pulled out of the Presidential race.

  10. Constnza81V2.0 says:

Easy on the Schadenfreude Mets fans. Especially since we root for a team that is entrusting Pedro, Duque, Alou, Castillo and Duaner Sanchez in major roles this year without much of a safety net if things go awry.

    • Blue_n_Orange says:

Agreed. No reason to call down the thunder. We’re lucky to have Johan–Whew! Let’s leave it at that and just play out the season.

      • gipper913 says:

I agree. I just can’t take pleasure in a player’s injury. Especially given our own team’s aged/injury prone players like Pedro, Duque, Alou, etc.

    • bkdrew says:

Exactly. Timing is everything… let’s just leave it at that.

  11. clouseau says:

Perhaps he could’ve let them know sooner so they could’ve entered the bidding for Santana – and that is what is causing the ‘friction’ between him and the team!

  12. FleeToTyree says:

This makes getting Santana even sweeter.

BTW: SPAGS stays w/ the G-Men! Yes!

  13. jamie says:

sorry, but that tag was hilarious!

And now I’ll try to reign in my schadenfreude. But the fact that it’s schilling and the sox makes it reeeeal hard.

  14. GravediggerHebner says:

Great, now he has time to run for office.

  15. ebfnyc says:

he probably hurt his arm trying to type a blog on his blog “38 pitches.” The self admitted terrible writer will now have plenty of time to improve.

  16. guierllNO MOta says:

How do you pronounce Lohse in Boston?

By the way I just heard that a Nats fan was overheard in his kitchen saying that he doesn’t care if the mets got Johan they will still lose 12 of 19 to the Nats

Remember when Clemens defended himself as saying he has shown the same aging signs as Shilling…yet Shilling keeps getting hurt every year and Clemens keeps taking HGH, I mean b-12?

  17. BaysideBillyD says:

WFAN had reported that this could possibly be a career threatening injury.
If this would have come to light a few weeks ago… we would be singing a different tune around here.

  18. randytate says:

I assume he does, but can anyone confirm that Santana has a full no-trade clause in his contract with the Mets?

Not that I want to trade him, just curious….

    • zen says:

“Santana also gets a full no-trade provision, a hotel suite for road trips and a 15-person luxury suite for home games at Shea Stadium this year.”

“Santana’s deal contains bonus provisions for All-Star selection ($100,000), league championship series MVP ($100,000), World Series MVP ($250,000), postseason MVP ($100,000), postseason All-Star ($100,000), Cy Young Award ($500,00 to $1.5 million, depending on how many), MVP ($250,000), Gold Glove ($100,000) and Silver Slugger ($100,000).”

  19. free ruben gotay says:

I hope he reaches all of the bonus provisions mentioned above.

  20. FBones24 says:

Am I the only one that feels bad about this injury to Schilling? I never wish injury on a player and while Schilling is quirky and annoying, he is a warrior out there on the mound. I wonder what the story is with this? No matter how old Schilling is, he is still not a guy you want to face in game 3 or 4 of a short series.

    • dykstraw says:

i’m not happy that he could be injured…but i am amazed that this didn’t come out a week sooner.

  21. dave27 says:

“Career cut short by injury” will be the perfect addendum for his HOF credentials.

Schilling is the #3 in Boston – I doubt losing him would change their urgency on Santana. As a matter of fact, probably more reason to hold on to young depth.

I would look for them to sign a Lohse, Fogg, Benson, or some other fairly solid veteran.

  22. stickguy says:

I don’t feel that bad, since he has had a long career, and has pretty much been playing on borrowed time anyway.

But mostly, I don’t want anything to happen that gives the Yankees a better chance at making the PS again.

  23. MetsFan21 says:

Timing is everything. Thanks Curt for doing something right: Keeping your damn mouth shut about your shoulder injury and allowing us to get Johan Santana.

  24. Santanaman says:

IMHO…If this had come to light several weeks ago, Santana would be on the Sox. They would not have signed Schilling(8 mil saved) and turned around used that $ towards Johan. They are win now as well and do not want to lose this momentum to the Skanks.

Wow… timing… this is a great omen for us!
