Yesterday at Shea Stadium, the Mets officially introduced Johan Santana to the New York media.
According to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, “The Mets got themselves more than just an ace. They got themselves a warrior and a deep thinker.” Additionally, in the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano explains why Santana is “not just a special player. He’s a special person too,” says the player’s agent.
In the Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch gives credit to Jeff Wilpon for working to get a contract done with Santana, who told Klapisch of Wilpon, “No one from the team had ever talked to me like that. I took it as a compliment.”
In the New York Post, Joel Sherman explains how Santana has a fan in Pedro Martinez.

Agreed Matt I am now pumped for Pitchers and Catchers. More then I was last year. We need a countdown to P&C’s and Opening Day on the site
no countdowns, with our luck if cerrone puts up a countdown there will be a complete player hold out next monday and the season will be cancelled.
its on mets.com
Yup – Johan has be buzzing too.
It’s definitely time to bury the collapse and look towards 2008 an beyond.
I’m SUPER PSYCHED about our Mets again!
That video just made me wish the season started tomorrow! I can’t wait to see Santana pitch in that blue and orange uniform! And then I cant wait for the Mets to go to Yankee Stadium (see Johan dominate) and show the Yankees why they’ll be sorry they passed on Santana! Let’s go Mets!
If the comments Jeff Wilpon said to Klapish are true and not just marketing BS, then I am feeling better and better about the Mets and their long term prospects. Maybe he is maturing from the bully into a more reasoning guy. That would be greta for him, his employees, the team and the Mets fans. I hope it is true.
I’m pumped too. PUMPED! I can’t wait. As far as Jeff Wilpon goes, it’s good to know that the guy taking over seems to really ‘get it’ when it comes to getting the right players.
Aside from that, I’m disappointed that only one newspaper had Johan on the backpage. I’m not surprised, but I’m disappointed. I really am sick of seeing and hearing about Clemens and steroids. Especially on a day when Johan SHOULD be on every back page … but this junk pushes the Mets to the side once again. It’s a shame.
is it me or does roger clemens just look absolutely AWFUL. he looks like a man who hasnt slept in about 2 months. probably having nightmares about going to prison.
He looks bad, yes … especially with that haircut.
i think he did that bc hes probably going grey over this hes probably enduring more stress in the past couple months than he ever has in his life.
When Johan isn’t throwing shut outs and striking people out, he is handing out food at soup kitchens and helping old ladies cross the street and saving girls from fires (like the one at the 125 street station on the 4 train
Honestly, after listening to Jeff Wilpon speak with Mike and the Mad Dog and hearing how much praise Omar gave him at the press conference, I have a new found confidence in the ownership and the future of the franchise. Omar went out of his way to give all of the credit to Jeff for getting the deal done and talking about his “creativity.” I also get a sense that any of the free agents that have signed with us (Beltran, Pedro, Glavine, etc.) always praise the Wilpon’s and say how comfortable they were. I got the same impression with Johan yesterday and it almost seemed like he and Jeff were friends. Anyway, I guess I feel confident with Jeff taking control in the future, something I’m not sure Yankee fans could say about their family business.
Agreed. After reading the Bergen article, I have a new found respect for Jeff Wilpon. He seems to really believe in winning…yes good business means more money when the product is winning, but I think he really wants to not just be consistently good and profitable, but to be knocking on the World Series door every year.
Thats all I can ask for.
OMG GUYS I AM SO UPSET I WANTED TO BE A YANKEE SOOOOOO BAD
yea he really wanted to move to a rotation in transition with an aging defense and into the most offense-productive division in baseball. That’d be good for his career…
in defense of that he wouldnt face the yankee lineup so when you factor that out im sure its no different than any other division.
Take off the Johan mask, Russo. It’s bad enough we have to listen to you mid-day, try to stay away from MetsBlog, OK?
Um, sarcasm? Go take your lunch break fellas you’re getting snippy
Ugh…..What is THIS all about….
“…by the way, this ad comes courtesy of SNY , and has me completely fired up for the 2008 season…”
Looks like Shea won’t be the only thing selling out for the Mets this year….
No matter what motive he has for posting it, you can’t deny what he says. How does that video not fire you up? jeez..
lmao Cerrone can’t win no matter what he does…he was the only guy that kept us up to the minute through the whole winter with everything regarding Santana, he was the only guy kept saying that Santana’s preference was to play for the Mets, and after all these months, people still give him grief over his SNY deal…
amen…I love the fact that he has a deal with SNY…how else would he get invited to press conferences….and this is just the beginning of the trickle-down effect.
I would agree if not for that “Be relevant, dont insult other posters, dont curse or be banned” thread a few days ago…
Im sorry, but after seeing how MSG controls every aspect of how they are reported on, I just cant help but think they signed Matt up more to control the disseminaton of information than to reward a die-hard fan. PR is HUGE to the bottom line for these businesses, er….Sports Organizations….They are gonna be monitoring whats being said about them from now on…
Anyone who thinks that corporate interference in regards to the media either isn;t a big deal, or is non-existant is a a fool…
With that said, I havent seen a big difference in this site yet, and I hope it remains that way, but they havent played a game since Matt signed up with SNY yet….
It’s hard to differentiate sarcasm from idiocy online at times. Sorry.
Saltzy23,
That comment policy has been in effect since WAYYYY before the SNY deal Matt just has to repost it every so often when things get crazy.
Hey! Since I had couple free periods from school on weds. I took the 7 to Shea Stadium & waited outside the diamond club to catch a glimpse and try to get an autograph from Johan Santana. To my suprise, since it was a little rainy, only a little bit of people showed up. Lucky thing I took the train ride all the way from Brooklyn to Shea because I met David Wright and he was very cool and nice signing autographs for everyone, i got him on a baseball, and Johan Santana was very nice also, he signed autographs for a couple people, because PR man Jay Horowitz said he had to catch a flight (yea right). It was worth the 2 to 3 hour wait I endured since Johan came out of the stadium around 5:00 but David came out way earlier like around 3 o3 330…lol thought i would share that
take care
later
i also got johan on a baseball
forgot to add that
