Braves 3B Chipper Jones, using the anonymous username U Kno Who, posted comments on the Braves blog for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, confirms Braves beat writer David O’Brien.

exxcceellllleent…i love it…and always wonder is this has ever happened on MetsBlog.com…i guess we’ll never know

Chipper on himself and the Mets…

“Just heard that Hoss is done after is contract runs out after next season.  Pretty reliable source that is close to him said that he is seriously thinking about retiring soon.  Said that he is tired of listening to all the Mets fans on a Braves blog dominating the conversation with David Wright talk.  Also said that he is tired of owning the Mets for 15 years.  Its someone elses turn.”

…jeez…of course his local nickname is Hoss…how perfect…apparently, there are just countless reasons why i hate the Braves…it just never ends…

Chipper on Shea Stadium…

“I will be deeply saddened to see Shea stadium go.  It was where I hit my first homer and we have had so many memorable games…Im gonna make sure that I get a stadium seat for my third son, Shea, so that we will have a momento.  Hopefully the new stadium will provide the same kind of atmosphere that the old one did.  I think it will.  I used to be a chicks fan but I’ve gotten a chance to hunt with some of the guys from RF, so I’ve become fans of theirs.”

Chipper on the Romance…

“Girls like the romance. Whatever u do, it better be original. Flowers and candy are nice, but every woman loves the bling. At least that’s what I’ve experienced. But what do I know, I haven’t had the best luck with the ladies.”

Chipper on the Mets getting Johan Santana

“Santana is as good as it gets.  There is no doubt that the Mets have a strong pitching staff, provided they all stay healthy.  I’ve faced him a couple of times and it’s no walk in the park.  Whoever we have pitching that night better bring his A game.  That being said, he is human.  Maybe we will get the game tapes from some of the Indians games last year.  They had pretty good success against him (5-0).”

…first of all, well done by Chipper Jones, who i love to hate…it’s difficult for me to give him compliments, but that was a pretty cool thing to do for his fans…also, as much as it infuriates me, i love that he stokes the rivalry between the Mets and Braves…he seems to appreciate it, from both sides…and i can dig that…

“I used to be a chicks fan but I’ve gotten a chance to hunt with some of the guys from RF, so I’ve become fans of theirs”…..?????

Me no understand Hoss speak…..

mikey_FF February 8, 2008 at 8:41 am

haha … seriously, what does that mean?????

koosman36 February 8, 2008 at 8:52 am

a previous poster had asked whether he liked the dixie chicks. (not exactly the first question i would ask a player, but, whatever). no idea what the ‘guys from RF’ reference is about

stickguy February 8, 2008 at 8:56 am

RF is Rascal Flatts. So, in non-redneck speak, he used to like the Dixie Chicks, but he started to hang out in the woods with a bunch of guys, so now he likes their music.

cmon_mets08 February 8, 2008 at 8:59 am

Ohhhh i thought he meant right field…

mikey_FF February 8, 2008 at 9:00 am

Ohhhhh … thanks for the clarification guys!

mitt16 February 8, 2008 at 9:04 am

Thanks for that. I couldn’t stomach sifting through the inbred feeding frenzy to read all the statements….

Wow, my nasty side really comes out anytime I talk about those people… I gotta get that checked out

AzMetsFan February 8, 2008 at 10:57 am

wow, thanks for translating. Matt, you really should post that translation in your original post because its baffling.

Slob February 8, 2008 at 11:42 am

I’m a huge country music fan and even I don’t listen to that rubbish.

Crooked Numbers February 8, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Larry’s time is past. My time has come. Alright, I admit it Matt, I’m David W. and I read metsblog.

Kwizzles February 8, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Haha Chipper Jones has a happy life blogging with his favorite fans

plasto February 8, 2008 at 8:35 am

Yeah … I’d love to say “good for Larry,” but I can’t understand half of what he’s posting. Maybe “Hoss” is the “eggs in your shoes” feller?

Too bad “Hoss” isn’t more fun to chant.

sellitman February 8, 2008 at 8:36 am

Does this guy make first ballot HOF? I say he does..

Constnza81V2.0 February 8, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Absolutely. I can’t stand him but he’s been one of baseball’s most underrated stars IMO for years.

njmatt February 8, 2008 at 8:38 am

You know, as I kept reading, I kept stopping and thinking to myself: “Hoss?”…I mean, really???

Anyway, the romance quote cracks me up, they probably love the bling from him because he uses his wealth to get the ladies. At least that is how I interpret that quote.

Hit The Weights Zeile February 8, 2008 at 10:17 am

translation: women love when you have millions of dollars and buy them incredibly expensive things…..as if this wasnt common knowledge

mitt16 February 8, 2008 at 8:39 am

Larry must have got beaten by the Eli Manning stick before he started posting… can’t understand either one of them when they start opening there mouths

zer09 February 8, 2008 at 10:40 am

That would be “they’re mouths.” Be careful when you criticize others…

zer09 February 8, 2008 at 10:40 am

LOL…make that “their mouths” don’t know what’s wrong with me this morning…

a February 8, 2008 at 11:17 am

Like the Americans when they, you know, played the Russians and the Soviet Union.

Lord love Eli. He is such an odd duck.

Aristo The Greek February 8, 2008 at 8:41 am

He is a no doubt 1st Ballot HOF’er. He was the best player on all of most of those Braves division champions. Of course I yell “Larry” as loud as I can every time he comes to Shea, but he has that bad-ass mean streak that you want in your best player. And I hope one of our young stars names his kid “Citizen B.” one day!!!!! (I was in philly for 2 of those 4 painful days last August)

Aristo The Greek

DjDeF February 8, 2008 at 9:24 am

You mean Sidd Bream wasn’t the best Brave? Or how about Julio Franco?

Hit The Weights Zeile February 8, 2008 at 10:19 am

the guy is def a 1st ballot HOFer. hes also easily the best switch hitter of my generation.

mhochman February 8, 2008 at 8:45 am

As a guy playing against the Mets, i hate Chipper Jones with a disguste that amounts to absolute detastation!

But the more i hear him speak sometimes, the more i think he may be an OK guy after all, I mean when all the bad stuff went down with John Rocker, Chipper had been right in the middle of that, until Rocker went off the deep end, then chipper just kept his mouth shut.

plasto February 8, 2008 at 8:46 am

Hall of Fame? Definitely. First ballot? I’d say probably not, although maybe he comes out smelling like a rose in the Steroid Era and that earns him extra points.

Not to take anything away from “Hoss,” but I think he’ll probably get the nod on his second go-round.

Then again, girls do like the romance …

absentminded February 8, 2008 at 8:50 am

As I’ve matured as a fan, I’ve developed a grudging respect for some of our opponents. You’ve gotta give Chipper credit for being cocky in the right way. I love the Shea stadium ribs. He does whine a bit much, but I think he relishes the rivalry, and as a fan of the game, you have to appreciate that. Players who play for the rivalry instead of as heartless mercenaries are what makes baseball so fun. Compare him to sour-pusses like Pujols and others so caught up in themselves that they miss the point.

LenF February 8, 2008 at 9:22 am

100% dead-on. Players like him make a rivalry and he totally gets what makes the game so much fun for the fans.

He’s killed the Mets but there’s no doubt he is a great player.
I will actually miss him when he retires… fortunately, Jimmy Rollins seems to be stepping up to takeover his role.

astoriametsfan72 February 8, 2008 at 12:51 pm

I feel the saem for Chase Utley. I hate him because he’s a Phillie, but he’s a damn good ballplayer.

kowalski69 February 8, 2008 at 8:52 am

having a very hard time thats larry

njmatt February 8, 2008 at 8:55 am

Hoss?????

njmatt February 8, 2008 at 8:56 am

To expand on that, I didn’t know the Braves’ locker room had the same atmosphere as a truck stop.

theperfectgame February 8, 2008 at 10:59 am

I kinda assumed it did…

Innis_2_winnis February 8, 2008 at 8:58 am

Chipper Jones, your most recent graduate of the Emmett Smith school of communication.

I feel my gene pool evaporating just trying to comprehend what the hell he’s talking about.

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:39 am

“He got . . . DEBACLED”

Mexworshipper February 8, 2008 at 9:00 am

When I read the comments, I figured he was referring to Bobby Cox as Hoss. How can we be sure that he’s referring to himself. In the rest of the post, he refers to himself as “I”.

Mexworshipper February 8, 2008 at 9:01 am

Or maybe he’s even referring to John Smoltz.

njmatt February 8, 2008 at 9:02 am

that’s not a bad call but Chipper has played 14 seasons in the bigs and bobby cox has managed way more than 15 with the Braves.

mitt16 February 8, 2008 at 9:01 am

I wonder how Larry really thinks of Smoltz calling him out last year saying he’s soft and needs to play through injuries. That’s a real tough thing to say to a fellow athlete. I can’t see that one going away too easily…

gottabelieve07 February 8, 2008 at 9:02 am

Haha, so Larry is thinking about retiring after this year? Good.

Though I’ll miss chanting Laaaaa-rrryyyyyy… Laaaaa-rrryyyyyy

Since there’s only 1 year left to do it, I hope Pedro and Ollie plunk him square on the ass a few times this year.

Think of it as a going away present from Shea Hoss.

Golden Ratio February 8, 2008 at 9:04 pm

“By the way, not even close to retirement. I love torturing mets fans too much to hang em up yet. ”

Doesn’t sound like a guy with just one year left.

Man, I hope he hates CitiField with a passion.

mikey_FF February 8, 2008 at 9:03 am

“…exxcceellllleent…i love it…and always wonder is this has ever happened on MetsBlog.com…i guess we’ll never know…”

haha … but Matt, I bet you DO know! :)

Mexworshipper February 8, 2008 at 9:25 am

Haha, good point. If it did happen, I don’t see how Matt wouldn’t know.

Hit The Weights Zeile February 8, 2008 at 10:24 am

I thought firemetsmanagement was billy wagner?

mikey_FF February 8, 2008 at 10:26 am

That would make plenty of sense! lol

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:17 am

I always figured that any players who couldn’t resist the temptation to set straight nerdy know-it-alls like us would take pains to avoid giving clues, but “it’s where I hit my first home run” is pretty unequivocal. Of course, if a player posted here making references to playing for the Mets, I’d assume it was a basement dweller living in a fantasy world.

jznole February 8, 2008 at 1:33 pm

How do we really know that was Larry???

Cheese February 8, 2008 at 9:05 am

“..Also said that he is tired of owning the Mets for 15 years. Its someone elses turn.”

Is he talking about the Phillies?

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 10:29 am

probably pumping up Yunel Escobar

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:19 am

Funny that that coincides with it being “someone else’s turn” to win the NL East.

fanbunker February 8, 2008 at 9:16 am

When Chipper does announce his retirement, and plays his last game at Shea Stadium, do the fans recognize him with a standing O. or boo him? I wouldn’t be shocked with the former. He has been a fun adversary, but not in a bad way, in my opinion. Like others have said, he seemed to really enjoy the rivalry, and the things he said when you look back on it, “Mets fans can put their Yankee stuff on”, are sort of funny and harmless.

Hit The Weights Zeile February 8, 2008 at 10:27 am

i wouldnt mind if he got a positive reaction from the fans. the guy is a good clean player, he played along with the rivalry and obviously enjoyed it. its refreshing to know that there are some guys out there who dont just worry about personal stats and their bank accounts. although i wouldnt be surprised if he homers in his last AB at shea in which case expect booing.

brokenbat February 8, 2008 at 11:04 am

He will be on the DL with injured hands

MrMetsLuvChild February 8, 2008 at 10:32 am

You know over the years I have HATED Chipper but I do respect the fact that he “gets it” when it comes to the rivalry and the fun that surrounds it. While he has caused me much pain, I would probably give him a standing O. After my loud and obnoxious LARRY chant of course. The same would probably be true of Smoltz who is atrue competitor and has earned my respect over the years. I cannot however say I would do the same for Glavine only because he not only caused me pain as a Brave, but now walks along the same road as Kenny Rogers in terms of my Mets memories!

zer09 February 8, 2008 at 10:48 am

I don’t known about anyone else, but he gets a standing O if I’m in the park. He’s been a great player and as a baseball fan, you need to embrace it.

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:19 am

I would stand, clap, and boo. He’d get it.

anna_benson_blows February 8, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Booing Larry is like giving Armando Benitez the ball in the 9th with a one-run lead; rarely works out for us.

DAK442 February 8, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Larry is a great ballplayer and competitor, a solid citizen in an age of jerks,a fan of the game who “gets it” and has enjoyed the rivalry with us. I definitely cheer his last AB at Shea.

There’s only one player whom I truly hate, who is worth the enmity of all Met fans. And hopefully, once his DNA is matched to McNamee’s used syringes, he’ll be pitching for a Federal Lockup softball team.

NYMetz6986 February 8, 2008 at 9:17 am

maybe he feels like he needs to respark the rivalry because for the last two years they’ve been awful and not competitive…the only rivalry in the nl east these days is between the mets and phillies

NickA33 February 8, 2008 at 9:19 am

I’m a NY’er now living in Atlanta and I must say that I chant “Larry” even when I’m NOT watching my Mets play at Turner! I actually shutter every time I hear “Crazy Train” – that’s his on deck song by the way. Well, the begninning is anyway.

I digress. My whole point is that I think most Mets fans can really appreciate Chipper. I mean, biased aside, he’s one hell of a ball player and he absolutely dominates us. He’s a great competitor too. That being said, I hope we crush the Braves every game this year and that C.Jones goes 0-13.

But I do respect him and love to hate him. He really does bring that “something” to the Braves/Mets rivalry. If/when he retires, it’ll be a shame to see him go.

GO METS!

FBones24 February 8, 2008 at 9:59 am

I agree totally. He is more of a nemesis than an enemy and I never hated Chipper personally. In fact, I never quite understood why Mets fans hated him. As a player, on a team that we could never beat in the late 90’s and early 00’s, I can understand the dislike. This guy is a professional, came to play everyday, and like someone said above, in the steroid era he might be looked at as one of the best everyday “clean” players. While I respect him as a player, I can honestly say I will miss chanting “Larrrrrrryyyyyyy” but will not be sad to see him go. He owned the Mets and he could say what he wants because he backed it up.

I feel sick now from saying all that…

cyclone February 8, 2008 at 11:49 am

You never understood why they hated him? Maybe this quote rings a few bells…

“Now that the Mets are out of it, Met fans can go home and put their Yankee jerseys on…” – Chipper Jones, 1999

I think that had a lot to do with it…

That quote is classic…I’ll admit, even I thought it was funny when he said that…never hated him despite the fact that he killed us, but I can see why a lot of fans despise him.

FBones24 February 8, 2008 at 12:06 pm

True…haha…but that is a good quote. Ohhhh Larrrrryyy!

jznole February 8, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I’m the exact same way Nick. grew up in NY, now in ATL. And I too shutter and hate hearing that damn song!!!! And I do yell Larrrrrrrr-yyyyyyyy even if the Mets aren’t involved at the Ted.

NYMetz6986 February 8, 2008 at 9:23 am

he’s so jealous of wright it’s great haha…maybe if he found out a way to stay on the field he might make an all-star game again in his career…great player who i respect but he makes it so hard to like him

refuge5 February 8, 2008 at 9:24 am

WTF? I can’t stand this guy… HOSS!

cyclone February 8, 2008 at 9:29 am

Hoss is the man. Respect the Hoss…lol

tonylett February 8, 2008 at 9:32 am

Very good posts all!—From all perspectives!—This guy as
much as I’ve hated-on-him, Is a 1st ballot HOFer and a great
baseball player and a solid citizen. Plus at least Hoss is better
than Bubba. Is Craig Wilson on the way ? cause we need Help
in RF—( not Rascal Flatts!)—Is that a person or band?–It’s like
one of those Boz Skaggs situations!?—Strange, everyone seems very subdued since Johan pulled on the blue pinstripes w/#57 on it. Ahhh, Johan

The Dotel Motel February 8, 2008 at 9:44 am

Chipper is also going to have a terrific career in broadcasting which he said he is going to get involved with after he retires. He is a shoe-inn for the Baseball Tonight crew – or Atlanta broadcast crew – if/when he makes that decision.

He was a spectacular ballplayer that will no doubt get into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot easily. Part of it is as someone says he came out smelling like roses during the steroid era. I actually believe his voting percentage would probably be higher had he not moved positions for two or three years.

cyclone February 8, 2008 at 9:47 am

A lot more realistic response from Jones than from Jeter, who basically said he wasn’t paying attention to the Johan sweepstakes and didn’t care that the Yanks didn’t get him. OK, please tell me what rock you were living under for the past few months…and please say with a straight face that you rather have Hughes and Kennedy instead of Johan….

shea_guevara February 8, 2008 at 9:50 am

The next time Derek Jeter shares his opinion about anything, it’ll be the first.

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:22 am

Didn’t he share his opinion about some new Gatorade-marketed swill, the sports drink for lazy people, during the Super Bowl?

Mexworshipper February 8, 2008 at 11:34 am

That’s a great observation. So true.

mouserdz February 8, 2008 at 9:40 am

Would it surprise anyone if “Hoss” has posted.

mouserdz February 8, 2008 at 9:40 am

posted here.

mikey_FF February 8, 2008 at 9:42 am

Maybe Chipper really is “firemetsmanagement”. LMAO

FBones24 February 8, 2008 at 10:01 am

Now that you mention it, and seeing how he obviously has fun posting, I have no doubt that he has posted on here. I mean, he killed the mets for years, why not come on here and try to kill some of their fans.

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:22 am

Ellegirldetective?

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 11:33 am

wow I just took a ride in the wayback machine

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:43 am

Let’s hope he stays there.

jamie February 8, 2008 at 5:44 pm

whoa…

Frank Gaffington February 8, 2008 at 9:49 am

LAR- REE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ceetar February 8, 2008 at 9:50 am

I figure if a Mets play has read the comments here you’d be able to tell because he’d coldly ignore us completely at the stadium because of all the negativity.

It’s cool that he’s going to get one of the seats from Shea for Shea.

The idea of players stumbling around in blogs is going to just become more and more prevalent. A lot of the newer baseball players now grew up with computers and the internet. If there is a current day David Wright near binghamton who’s a Mets fan because of the double A team, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that guy reads this site, and then years later when he suddenly is a part of that team?

Just like some guys probably read the papers and listen to WFAN, some will read here, and others will ignore all of it.

CaseStreet February 8, 2008 at 9:53 am

I knew players post on their teams’ blogs. I’ve always thought that firemetsmanagement aka mistermet was none other than Billy Wagner.

eaeden February 8, 2008 at 10:01 am

Larry has been sick. Wish he had been a Met all these years. Glad we have Wright instead at this point.

randytate February 8, 2008 at 10:02 am

i hate the dude as much as anyone, but this was awesome

Joe S February 8, 2008 at 10:13 am

The one thing I take away from this is that David Wright is awesome.

JohanMartinez February 8, 2008 at 10:13 am

I used to hate the guy ..but 1st off , if you ever hear him speak about the game itself, you have to respect him for his passion, and the effort he puts out there and has for all of his career. He is a stand up teammate and a gamer bottom line, if he was a Met he wouldve probably been my favorite one..that being said he is a Brave. And when we face him I always hope for him to get hit with a pitch….lol…but I am an autograph collector , so I must admit a week ago Chipper sent me back a nice color 5×7 of himself autographed , along with a thank you letter for me writing him. Pretty cool..I used to be a huge collector , but the hobby got so damn expensive….now I just print letters to players off my computer and mail them to the team stadiums…works really really well…I have gotten some gr 8 players such as Nolan Ryan, Peyton Manning, Urlacher, Hines Ward…etc….. that being said enough bouut this..LETS GO METS!!

CaseStreet February 8, 2008 at 10:21 am

How do I get a Johan Martinez autograph?

JohanMartinez February 8, 2008 at 10:33 am

touche’

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 10:33 am

Larry “Hoss” Jones is to me the definition of “worthy opponent.” Naming his child Shea simply cinched that.

Rawjah Clemens Is In Jawgies Bawx February 8, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I totally agree. You can’t help but respect the guy, especially looking back on this era of steroid abuse. That late 90s rivalry was simply amazing, even though we never really came out on top.

Peter February 8, 2008 at 10:46 am

I think he gets a standing LARRY chant at either Shea or Citi.

wallaroundtheworld February 8, 2008 at 10:59 am

Larry the Injured Guy

Charlie February 8, 2008 at 11:09 am

You’ve got to love the childlike enjoyment he seems to take out of the rivalry.

Joe S February 8, 2008 at 11:16 am

I’m sure you’ll all love it when he hits a grand slam off Johan at Shea. -_-

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 11:19 am

If the Mets are up by 5 I’ll love it, and anyway didn’t you mean “when I hit a grand slam” Larry? :-)

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:23 am

Come on — this is clearly Joe Shlabotnik.

shea_guevara February 8, 2008 at 11:27 am

I thought he was still managing the Waffletown Syrups.

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 11:29 am

takes guts to appear (even on the internet) after batting .004

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:37 am

Fired by the ‘Rups after one game, having called for a squeeze play with no one on base.

Jacky Treehorn February 8, 2008 at 11:23 am

What “Chipper” wasn’t a stupid enough nickname by itself?

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 11:24 am

The first time Larry strolls to the plate at Shea in ‘08 I dare the Shea people to play “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” by Urge Overkill.

toomanyuniforms February 8, 2008 at 11:27 am

It was a Neil Diamond cover, but good call. Do they play Neil Diamond at Shea??? ;)

GravediggerHebner February 8, 2008 at 11:35 am

Even better. An excuse to dump the ripped off from the Red Sox Sweet Caroline.

Slob February 8, 2008 at 11:44 am

Yeah seriously. I am so sick of that song.

a February 8, 2008 at 11:25 am

LOL O LARRY. U Kno Who? I kind of love that he uses textspeak. Since he’s such a romantic, do you think he is a fan of the kissy face smiley? I also love the total non sequitur of DC vs. RF after a discussion of Shea Stadium.

MudvilleNine February 8, 2008 at 11:28 am

I think we should hang a big banner with his picture on it, on Shea’s facade…

and use it as a target for the wrecking ball’s first strike. LOL

Still, I have great respect for him as a player and competitor.

almar1965 February 8, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Apparently some of the Braves fans in that blog need their heads checked. While Chipper is one of the best switch-hitters of our generation, and arguably of all time, they actually believe that Chipper Jones is better than a fella by the name of Mantle.

Geez. What are they drinking down there?

MrMetsLuvChild February 8, 2008 at 1:09 pm

It’s not about what they are drinking, moonshine by the way, it’s about all of the inbreds who post on the Braves site!!

itsmetsforme February 8, 2008 at 1:10 pm

i think they call it moonshine.

Benny Blanco from da Bronx February 8, 2008 at 3:10 pm

OMGZ!!!1 Chipper Jones goes hunting!
He kills ducks and deer for sport and for fun!
What a dirtbag!!!
He should apologize to all his fans and the little kids and to PETA!

That’s cool Chipper did that little exchange with the fans.

sooze February 16, 2008 at 9:06 pm

First of all, Benny Blanco, you crack me up.

Second, I would absolutely die a happy woman if Chipper Jones (whose swing I’ve been in love with since I was like 12) commented on my blog. I love him.
