News: Bedard to the Mariners
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 8, 2008 3:13 pm

The Mariners have announced that they have acquired LHP Erik Bedard from the Orioles for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Cam Mickolio and Tony Butler.

…well, that answers that, since jones alone is better than any one prospect the Mets could have offered – pre-santana…plus, the O’s got seattle’s second-best pitching prospect in hillmanagain, as long as bedard didn’t end up on the Phillies or Braves, or Dodgers, i’m happy

…so, Dan Haren to the D’Backs, Johan Santana to the Mets, and Erik Bedard to the Mariners…

in my book, the Hot Stove is officially over

Shouldn’t the headline read, “Bedard to the Mariners”

  2. terpz06 says:

bedard to the orioles, he’ll help them

  3. Maddogcf says:

Omar’s snoozing again, why the hell didn’t we trade Reyes for Bedard and then Beltran for Arod and have Fmart start in center, the kid is a teenage hitting machine!

  4. shea_guevara says:

If it is Bedard to the Orioles, Angelos is dumber than I thought.

    “Teenage Hitting Machine”

    best quote ever..

  6. SheaVendor says:

    Let the season begin!!!

    LETS GO METS!!!

  7. chaseh says:

Hotstove over? Never! What about Blanton? He’ll be on the Sox by Monday.

    • Kalihan42 says:

I was wondering if they would push for him now wih Shilling down. Blanton might shift into mediocrity in that division though.

      • rockets212 says:

he would turn into sub par, they should sit on their young guys, they r good enough to have an impact. But forget about the Sox
        LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!

        • Nate W. says:

lets see, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester, and the kid who threw the no hitter. Whats wrong with that rotation?

  8. dave27 says:

Huh? I thought it was Haren to the Phillies and Bedard to the Braves?

I mean, everything I read is that all Santana allowed us to do, after dominating the division for 1 3/4 seasons, was keep up with the Jones’s (at least the Jones that’s left).

  9. squad says:

    Wow, what an off season.

Johan to the Mets. Bedard to M’s. Haren to D-Backs. Miggy and Willis to Tigers. Lots of big deals. I really can’t remember an off season with so many big players being moved around.

    • TG1 says:

its funny because all of the big moves were trades. no big free agents at all. Angels signed the biggest free agent by adding tori hunter

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Don’t forget the A-Rod drama. Although, maybe if you want to be technical about it you say his whole free agency period technically started while the season was going on…the 8th inning of the WS is still the 2007 season right?

Man are him and his agent a pair of jackasses.

  10. PA-Mets-Fan says:

Wow, I thought we gave up a lot for Santana. Seattle appears to have given up even more for Bedard. I guess having him under control for a while demands a kings ransom!

  11. CaseStreet says:

Now things are warming up. Is there anyone on Baltimore we should/could get?

  12. anditsouttahere says:

hot stove over and the mets come out on top out of everyone. superb offseason, lets play some ball now

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

I don’t know about the mets having the best offseason. It was good, but the Tigers really cleaned up. They lost Sean Casey but aquired Renteria, Miggy, and Dontrelle. I would take those moves over the Santana move alone. Even though I think Willis isn’t any good.

  13. mikeylou says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m concerned about the Diamondbacks in the grand scheme of things. Haren will make a big difference. The one thing that is questionable about them is the closer’s role now that they don’t have one.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

they have no closer and I still don’t trust their offense. If Eric Byrnes is your most feared hitter, you better hope to shut the other team out every game.

      • BatteriesForRocker says:

The hitting is still young, but they have some hitters that could blossom. And that Haren/Webb punch at the top of the rotation is the best around.

    • Nate W. says:

well Jorge Julio is still out there right? :D

      • dave27 says:

No – Cleveland after going to Colorado last season.

They have someone lined up…I just forget who!

    • TG1 says:

very good point. who will be closing for them??

  14. mitt16 says:

On behalf of all Mets fans who KNOW if Shilling’s news leaked a couple of weeks earlier that, there would be no chance Boston would have been outbid for Johan – a collective WHEEEWW!

    • Nate W. says:

Yea, this is actually pretty huge in terms of fortunate timing.

Best case senario the Mets still get Santana but have to give up FM or Church and Heilman in addition to the other 4.

    • dave27 says:

I don’t know why people think this. Boston is coming off 2 titles in 4 years, has the premiere ace in the game and a #2 who they expect to be vastly improved in his second season in the US. Why would they give away half their farm to replace an aging #3 they already know is only thre for one more season anyway?

We don’t need extra angles to be happy about with Santana. Boston never needed him…they are sitting PRETTY with Beckett, Dice-K, Buchholz, Lester….Ellsbury in CF…and the patience to develop them.

The only team that should be kicking themselves are the ace-less Wang-ers in the Bronx shelling out over $200MM to rely on 3 23-year olds….

  15. CaseStreet says:

Matt, you forgot the Miggy and Willis trade that started off the hot stove.

  16. Metsnumba57 says:

I think the Orioles got the better half of the trade. They got back good young talent
